Who or how did you apply and did you go private or public sector? I know the job has its challenges as sam has covered many times, but that is something that i need. This is where correctional facilities go tremendously wrong and have consistently for a long long time.
If you read historical writing about Alcatraz, short (ish) sentences with the harshest conditions, designed to completely break the soul and mentality of the prisoner, resulted in the criminal never returning to prison. Not one free man ever returned to prison after a stint in Alcatraz.
Some say inhumane, many say a needed evil for society to progress.

Really like ur vids , very informative. I did a few years late 80s early 90s not my best years , I’m well past all that now. But Iv got some memories good / bad and very bad. Risley was a place of multiple suicides slashings stabbings , for a quarter of burn , can u believe that !! Amazing how such trivial issues can and did result in dire consequences, on the good side , I worked in risley kitchen and we wer opened up from around 6 till 8 , and shower n clean clothes ever night , when we wer going back to wing , we wer padded down on way out , but we all used to take left over steaks , we would wrap them in tin foil then in bread bags , get back to the pad , put them a towel and in between the pipes while we had a shower , get a big jug of tea out the urn and bang up , joint , steaks n tea ,, I tried at the beginning of my remand and conviction to fuck about fight all the time and be an absolute dick head , I was spoken to by a screw who I won’t name , he was ex ruc and was from Northern Ireland, I was ex army and went off the rails because of my brother being killed , we spoke at length and he turned my life around, he was such a decent guy , he made me work for what was on offer , which I did , I owe a debt of gratitude to that officer and you remind me of him in a small way , you may even know him ,,,

There's a story in one of Jamie Boyle's books about Paul Sykes, which involved me!*!*
Me & a mate were in Bourbon Street nightclub in Wakefield early 90's & Sykes came in straight on the dancefloor.
Everybody moved away & I told my mate to walk away but he ignored me.
So, just Sykes & my mate left & Sykes walks up to him & started shadow boxing at my mate 🙈🥊
My mate had no idea who Sykes was, so started boxing BACK at Sykes FFS!!
I just said to one of the Doormen: "My mate's gonna end up in Pinderfields (Hospital), so I had to walk towards them, and drag my mate away without getting battered.
Quickest I've ever sobered up to be honest 🤣🤣🙈

The fact that you were intimidated by a prisoner says everything that is wrong about the British judicial and prison system. There is a prison in Russia called ‘Black Dolphin’…there are documentaries on UA-cam about it…what an eye opener…there isn’t one prisoner in Black Dolphin that is in any way happy to there, there is no disrespect shown to the prison guards at all…in fact, every prisoner interviewed said that if they had known what this prison was like then they would have thought twice about committing the crime. Not one of them is cocky or brash, they live a miserable existence and they are paying for their crimes in the worst way possible. This scouse lad you talked about would soon be falling into line in Black Dolphin. Watch the Black Dolphin documentary…it’s an incredible watch.

my uncle was good old school friends with the chap you're talking about sam,he was a serious fella BG.wish you would have met my uncle on his few trips behind the door,he was liverpool's hardest man 60s/early 70s but unfortunately had a hit put on him via a car by a few people.was an absolute viking,in borstal an early age, then on the run from the army got pulled by a main plod and snapped his jaw with one dig(got 5 years)was in dartmoor etc then used to mind the beatles/tommy cooper/jerry lee lewis etc any stars that came to liverpool.larger than life a monster of a man but a gent "did you ever get beat joe?"...."no it took a fucking car to beat me" haha man was a legend,it's in black and white in a few books he was liverpool's hardest man and got told that off numerous old school villians northend and southend.killed liverpool's worst bully and got manslaughter as he was that well liked a gent and did a lot for people, wasn't the same after his hit though as his legs were all metal plates.shame him and his brothers didn't stick together as they freakishly big,his brother georgie had to abscond to oz as he did something here i won't go into(now he was a bonafide nasty psychopath the total opposite of our joey)but joe was the only one to go into that lifestyle all the other brothers being workers.was writing his memoirs and would have made some book that but he ripped it up when he lost his son jojo another jail nutcase who unfortunately let drugs get the better of him.you can check him out if you google him...(joey "beech" keatley)that pic with him and jerry lee lewis the chap behind them i was good friends with his brother sadly just passed from another old school notorious liverpool family, was with hima bit before he passed and even he said "no one came close,he was too big,too fast and too powerful but was a gent always joking and laughing" wish you would have met him mate one hilarious nutcase.keep it coming sam and have a good day

Yeah he wasn't the force he once was in the 90's period due to constant drinking and not looking after himself, compared to when he was in his prime, when he really looked after himself. I saw him at thornes park watching athletics in around 93/94 and he looked really weathered even then. There's context with this kinda thing - meaning = I've heard other stories of someone or other getting the better of Sykes in the nick but every time it was before or around the millennium, which honestly doesn't surprise me at all as he started dropping to bits..back end of 99 he was really declining. By 2001 he looked like a weak, full blown tramp. early 70's to early 80's Paul Sykes though...Totally different animal.
