In deference to recently deceased artist/producer Quincy Jones who commented on this movie [quoted here via the Wikipedia article of this film]: Jazz artist Quincy Jones said to a crowd after a screening: "I had the pleasure of being acquainted with Don Shirley while I was working as an arranger in New York in the '50s, and he was without question one of America's greatest pianists ... as skilled a musician as Leonard Bernstein or Van Cliburn ... So it is wonderful that his story is finally being told and celebrated. Mahershala, you did an absolutely fantastic job playing him, and I think yours and Viggo's performances will go down as one of the great friendships captured on film."
I've seen this movie many times and it still moves me! Great to see two cultures at the time that clashed come together to become friends! I liked how Dr Shirley would help Tony Lip write to his wife and in the end she knew and was thankful! Great reaction Emma! ❤️💛 The music in this movie was Awesome!
The first scene that Dr Shirley was playing with his trio I thought was brilliant. Tony The lip was the token white valet and he was enjoying the music with the black valets and Dr Shirley was the token black person inside that mansion.
This movie shows you a lot of course. One thing I always got out of it is that any man is and can be genuinely good inside. It's just a matter of the programming/conditioning he has received in his lifetime which creates resistance in him. Tony Lip was brought up to be racist, but he was a man of integrity. And spending time with the Doctor made him realize a lot of his programming/conditioning wasn't real and therefore he became a lot more open towards black people in general. Bottom line is, Tony was open to the idea of growth.
He didn't take the other guys money and didn't leave the Dr because he had a deal and hes a man of his word. A mans word meant a whole lot more back then then it does these days
Tony is a pretty scummy character if we’re honest, he’s not above making money at any means necessary for his family, I do think the original deal was a part of it but I think just the general understanding of each other was a lot of it and especially how much he realized that even if the doctor never showed or expressed it, he valued tony tremendously.

You might enjoy a movie about Beethoven called" Copying Beethoven" a Young women is sent to assist Ludwig Von Beethoven to help him put his music to paper because of his deafness
That was a really good movie, and one I need to see all of some times. I had heard there were some controversies around the portrayal of the two men's relationship (I think the movie is based on a book that the driver wrote), although I far from know the full ins and outs of that, I had just heard that. Unquestionable Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen are both wonderful though.
Emma, your dear reactions are so enjoyed. This is a very fine movie. It may get added to my Christmas repertoire with Die Hard, Trading Places and others...the final Christmas scene is pretty close to reality in its time. Laugh at me, but I love Nobody's Fool for similar reasons (Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, etc.)
I think it’s more just about being exposed to different situations can make you less ignorant. Tony is just extremely ignorant and learns along the way and helps the doctor loosen up aswell.
This is a great movie! But if you like Jazz and want a movie with a more nuanced, musical theme yet hits you like a ton of bricks, "Whiplash" is one you should check out...then hold on for a wild ride!
I've been seeing shorts of this movie around on YT but they never said what it's name was. Thanks you, now I know what's it's called so I can look for it on my own.
While based on a true story, Hollywood took it's liberties with some scenes. The controversy with the movie started with it being written and produced by Tony Lip's grandson, so it took on the air of the "White Savior" stereotype. The Shirley family wasn't contacted until the movie was already in production, so they had little influence on the film. Dr. Shirley and Tony spent over a year on the road. Having a bodyguard was recommended to Dr. Shirley from Nat King Cole who was attacked 6 years earlier performing in Alabama. Victor Hugo Green wrote "The Negro Motorist Green-Book" for black motorist and families traveling. It wasn't just the Jim Crow South that had "Sun Down Towns". In fact I have 2 copies of Green Books that were my father's. The movie potrayed Dr. Shitley having to be introduced to black culture. He was friends with Nat Cole, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones and other black artist and he didn’t need Tony to introduce him to soul food. Dr. Shirley was also friends with Robert F. Kennedy, Dr. King and other leaders in the Civil Rights movement.
@SutekhDaSteemroller he was far from weak, but as I mentioned they were parts that were misleading. Dr Shirley was friends with plenty of artists who had to play the Chitlin' Circuit, but the movie will have you believing Tony introduced him to Soul and Blues music, just as they'll have you believing Dr Shirley never had fried chicken until Tony introduced him to KFC. It was a good movie, but they should've had Dr Shirley's family's input
Emma i love this movie first of all. Also during the video, i felt the happiness in your eyes while you watch the movie. I really felt it. Loved your reaction video. Thanks :)
"Sundown town" is a place where Black people are forbidden to travel after a certain hour. This is the reality of the South in the 1950's and 1960's. I know you feel uncomfortable about this, but this is what life is like, especially during thing period of time.
Seeing the movie thru this video. (Oops) But glad I didn’t miss it entirely! You’re so charming, Emma. THX for introducing me to such a good film. Am a music lover and a movie lover.
I thought Viggo Mortensen's performance was Oscar-worthy, but unfortunately he was up against Rami Malek, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, and Willem effin' Dafoe that year. Bad luck.
Liked the movie. I don’t think it was a great film but solid. I remember reading an article that said the Shirley family said the story was exaggerated in a number of ways. I obviously dont know
Glad to see you’re reacting to this gem. I feel like for most people this movie just flew under their radar but thankfully that wasn’t the case for you. And it’s always a plus to see you enjoying the music since this movie was filled with songs and pieces throughout.

Green Book is a brilliant movie, seen this twice now, and loved it both times.
The first scene that Dr Shirley was playing with his trio I thought was brilliant. Tony The lip was the token white valet and he was enjoying the music with the black valets and Dr Shirley was the token black person inside that mansion.
i love this movie. GREAT MOVIE GREAT REACTION thx
The world is full of lonely people afraid to make the first move. that just hits perfectly.

Fun Fact: The real Tony Lip played NY Boss Carmine Lupertazzi in the Sopranos.
I watch this movie at every opportunity. It's one of my favorites.

When I watched this I got the idea that Doctor Shirley called Robert Kennedy from the jail.
The early 60's in the US was a difficult time for race relations.
Really great movie choice, enjoyed it!
Yay
I've never seen this film. That was great and I'll definitely have to sit down and watch it myself

Theres a lot of white savior films but this wasn't one of them to me. Dr Shirley wasn't portrayed as weak and he taught Tony Lip a lot about life.
