@CoyzyMovieNight it was authentic, and most of the reaction fans can sniff that out immediately.... that's what we enjoy.... True authentic reactions. Bravo, you guys are doing great, keep it up!
I saw this in the movie theater when it first came out. It was one of the most engaged and reactive audiences I've ever seen. When Percy killed Mr. Jingles, the audience collectively gasped. When he told Dale there was no Mouseville, people groaned and several shouted "you bastard!" There were gasps of awe when John cured Melinda's tumor. There was audible crying in several scenes leading up to John's execution and open sobbing when John said "Don't put me in the dark. I's afraid of the dark." This is a phenomenal movie.
He can convey SO much in his time and facial expression, and certain lines from his movies stand out as remarkable. This is one, a long with the scene of Forrest Gump when he first meets his son and asks Jenny "Is he smart... or...or"
Not just Tom - there are some tier 2 actors (at least I saw them that way before this lol) that just nail their role here. Not a single one of them makes this seem like people doing a role. Gorgeous movie, and beautifully acted by everyone involved
"does he mean Cassiopeia?" Absolutely correct!! Some theories about John's existence and whether or not he is truly the second coming of Christ or just an angel revolve around the scars that he has and the possibility that at that point in time, 1935, he had been around long enough to see slavery and to have himself been a slave!! He lived through the horror and the ugliness!! The constellation Cassiopeia was used by the underground railroad to sneak runaway slaves North!! It was one of the ways that they navigated at night!!!😮❤
Absolutely one of the greatest masterpieces of film ever made. And while all the obvious accolades go to the most well-known (at that time) actors in this, I am endlessly floored by the performances of Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey, Sam Rockwell as William Wild Bill Wharton, and Doug Hutchison as Percy Wetmore, those three are like perfectly constructed Greek tragedy archetypes and encapsulates the human condition in people we often see in real life, the worst and the best of what the human animal is capable of. Lovely Reaction, in these upside-down times we live in it's refreshing to see the humanity and warm heart of people just being decent people. Kudos.
Absolutely one of the clues as to who John Coffey actually is!! Christ was ALWAYS depicted in paintings AND literature with a halo around his head!!!!😮😮
Such a genuine reaction you guys! This is honestly one of the best movie I’ve ever watched. I never get tired of this film. Of course your next Tom Hanks movie needs to be Forrest Gump if you haven’t seen it this is also one of the best Tom’s performance.
Another great reaction from both of you! I’ve watched quite a few others reactions to this movie and your the first to know what “the lady in the rocking chair” refers to (the constellation Cassiopeia). Looking forward to more and I also enjoy your commentary at the end!
He was a peaceful man. He had the ability to heal people. He could bring the dead back to life. He was unjustly executed. His initials were ....JC Story told by a man named Paul.
Yup. Sounds like another fairy tale I've heard. Only John didn’t give babies cancer and then watch them die as the parents begged him for months to heal the baby. John just healed people. He didn’t wait for a specific number of prayers or decide some babies weren't worth saving, like the deity in the Christian fables.
I’m guessing thats why Percy sheds a tear when he shoots Wild Bill. Coffey felt regret for what he was about to do through him as he’d only tried to help and heal people up until that moment.
Cassie was Cassiopeia. I heard the story behind the constellation was she was on her throne with her head down. She was sad her daughter had to be sacrificed. But John being about the light/good changed it to the lady in the rocking chair instead.😊
And both directed by Frank Darabont. I love King as a writer, but idk if the films would have been as good with a different director. Most of King's film adaptations have been pretty bad.
10:37 Yes this scene sums up Percy's character to a T. He loved to psychically abuse prisoners & torture them when the prisoner posed no threat i.e. when they were handcuffed or behind bars etc.... BUT here we have a situation where Percy has 100% justification to physically subdue a violent inmate but he doesn't do it because there is a chance that Percy himself could get injured in the process. He is a typical bully i.e. a Coward!
I really enjoyed this reaction! It's nice that it was a long reaction, too. It's always a shame when it's cut down to a 30 minute reaction when it needs more space than that, so it's great that you gave it the space it deserves. John's lawyer was played by Gary Sinise who co-starred with Tom Hanks in both Forrest Gump and Apollo 13. I'm sure I've probably recommended one or both of those before, but I'll do it again anyway. If you haven't seen either of those, you should. Apollo 13 is particularly good since it's a true story. The actor playing Tom Hanks' boss is James Cromwell who was in a fantasic Oscar winning movie called L.A. Confidential which also stars Russell Crowe and Kevin Spacey. Definitely check that one out if you want another meaty character drama, this time set in 1940s Los Angeles during the golden age of Hollywood. It's especially good if you like mysteries.
Stephen King is a fantastic author. So many of his books have been made into wonderful movies. The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, Pet Semetary, Stand By Me, and so many more…
People these days have forgotten the word "pestilence". In this movie it is depicted as the flies. The reason for the hood is to spare on lookers from having to watch the eyes from popping out of the head.
RIP: Michael Clarke Duncan (John Cofey) 2012 - heart attack + respiratory failure Michael Jeter (Del) - 2003 - HIV + epileptic seizure Dabbs Greer (Old Paul) - 2007 - kidney failure + heart disease (he was also the reverand in the 1970s show Little House On The Prairie).
Knowing that MCD was actually genuinely scared in the scene where he's found w/ the girls absolutely breaks my heart. He seriously should've won the awards for this. Also knowing MCD & the actor who played Del are passed on hurts to think about every time I watch this.
After watching this film a few times over the years (and several reactions to it) I came to realise that one of the saddest aspects (or unjust aspects) was the manner of all the inmates deaths. John Coffey was an innocent man, so that speaks for itself. He didn't deserve to die at all but he died a painful death. Arlen Bitterbuck & Eduard "Del" Delacroix were both guilty men but were at least sorry for what they had done and accepted the consequences - They both died a painful death and in Del's case a truly horrific death. "Wild Bill" Was guilty of one of the most horrific crimes imaginable but showed zero remorse for it. If he'd ever got out of prison he'd have almost certainly re-offended. But his death was quick & relatively pain free. No-one deserved Del's death but Wild Bill comes pretty close!
This movie is based on one of my favourite Stephen King novels. And novels like that make me protect Mr King every time someone is referring to him as a "horror writer". King has quite a lot of brilliantly written novels with deep meaning so he deserves much better than being categorized as a "horror" or "pulp fiction" author.
King can certainly be brilliant. I've read a couple of his novels that were less so. For someone so prolific they can't all be masterpieces, but this one certainly was.
@@llanitedaveDefinitely agreed. From his classic horror novels one of my least favourite is Firestarter. On the other hand “It” is a masterpiece. From his non-horror stories Hearts in Atlantis is also a well written piece imho.
The thing is, both Wild Bill and Percy are sociopaths, it's just that one was born into poverty out in the boonies and the other was born into a well-connected political family in the city. I always figured that John decided that the least harmful and most just solution was to have them cancel each other out.
Mice typically have a lifespan of 2 to 5 years, depending on the species. "Mister Jingles" is about 65 years old by the end of the film when Paul visits him in the cabin.
I took this from another comment section, but when you go back and watch the 2 executions if Del and John, Del says he was sorry for what he did, whereas John says he was sorry for what he was. That living during that time as a man of color was difficult enough with the law, but even though he was innocent, no one helped him. The man that played Percy is kind of famous over here past this performance because when he was in his late 40s, he married a girl named Courtney Stodden who was just 18, so his creepy act was more than just acting. This is also the third movie Tom Hanis and Gary Sinise are in, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, and this
@@CoyzyMovieNight In most prisons it was randomly decided who would pull the switch, similarly in a firing squad not everyone would have live rounds so you could tell yourself that you didn't fire the killing blow.
No coincidence that John Coffey has the same initials as Jesus Christ. The books were a 6 edition serialized offering and it came about because Stephen King was tumbling around the idea of what would happen if Jesus came back in modern times. One of the 5 best movies ever made. Welcome to the Percy Haters Club by the way.
Heartwarming reaction as well! Now I'm thinking you'll respond quite well to "Das boot" as well - you'll be going on quite the emotional roller coster with that one
The movie that they show John Coffey is called "Top Hat" with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Even if you don't do it for a reaction, you should give it a watch.
He shouted "Dead man walking" to warn everyone nearby that the man had been sentenced to death, so if he attacks you, his punishment won't be worse. In other words, this man has nothing left to lose so stay away.
However sad and magical the previous part of this film is, when Paul takes the lady to see old Mr Jingles and everything after is to me the most beautiful, sad and mystical ending to any film ever. Maybe because I never had a Grandad. 'we each owe a death, there are no exceptions... but oh Lord, sometimes the green mile seems so long'.
Michael Clarke Duncan is in a couple of other movies you would enjoy. The first one is Armageddon with Bruce Willis, and the second is Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby with Will Ferrel.
I knew Mrs Coyzy was going to have a hard time with this one 😊 It’s a tough watch at times but totally worth it. I love when Brutal says “feel how we feel. We don’t hate ya” 😢 This was a really great reaction you two, thanks. Also, the last film to watch that was directed by this director and adapted from a Steven King story is The Mist. So please could you watch it to complete this trifecta?
This is why this is such a good movie - Watching makes you REALLY hate Percy. The actor did a fantastic job playing his role so well, we'd all like to strangle him.
Such a great movie. When I was at physical therapy, the tech asked me about my favorite movies. I named several, but said The Green Mile was one of my top movies. He'd seen the others I mentioned, but he hadn't watched this one. He said he'd watch it and let me know what he thought about it. I asked every time I went to PT (3 times a week). I had a brain tumor and had to stop PT, but I called and told the receptionist to let him know I'd had a brain tumor and to ask him if he had watched it. I haven't called back yet, but I am still curious about that.
Epic, Epic movie. One of the best ever made. If you don’t get emotional on this one, check your pulse. 😢 I’ve watched it many times (except for Dell’s part) Great reaction, guys. 😊❤
This movie is so effective at getting you to care about and hate the supporting characters--Del, Mr. Jingles, Melinda, Percy, Wild Bill. An all-time bad guy performance from Doug Hutchison.
Now you should watch two other awesome Stephen King adaptations done by another director - Rob Reiner. He directed - Stand by Me - a coming of age story and Misery - a thriller featuring an Oscar Winning performance by Kathy Bates, in her first role.
I loved your reaction. Thanks. I notice you didn't have a lot of older movies in your catalog. Here are some of my favorites: “The Dead Zone,” “Fahrenheit 451,” "Forbidden Planet," "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," "Miracle on 34th Street (1947 NOT the remake)," "North by Northwest," "The Pink Panther," "Psycho," "Rear Window," "Rio Bravo," "Some Like it Hot," "The Thing," "2001: A Space Odyssey (hard to understand without reading the book)," "Vertigo"
A disturbing fact about this film is that the actor who plays Percy was/is a creep in real life, too. When he was 50 years old, he married a girl who was only 15 years old. 🤨
So the actor who played Percy, IRL at age 52 he married a 16 YO girl, paid for her to get DD breast implants. He really didn't have to act for this movie - he really was a jerk. And divorced now.
Good Lord! shall I watch this highly anticipated reaction on the channel before my afternoon appointment or wait until afterward to be a mess alongside?
Yeah, this movie is the reason I was so upset when Michael Clarke Duncan died. I've enjoyed his performances in a lot of things, but nothing compares to him as John Coffey.
Even with all the modern technical wizardry of modern films, this is till on of the best films in existence second only to The Last Samurai! Lastly can you believe this is Stephen King? lol!
Think of it this way. 1935-1999 is 64 years. That means with an average lifespan of 3 years for a mouse that Mr Jingles has lived 21 times his average lifespan. That means that with a humans average lifespan of between 80-85 years that paul still has 1624 years left before he dies, and that's assuming that Mr Jingles died then. It could be longer.
Great reaction! She's a bigger softie than even I am, and I'm a total wuss and sobber 😂 Random rant from a former pet shop worker; mice make AWFUL pets because they're dumb and they bite. If you want a rodent, rats are WAY better. Far more intelligent and social. Some even form bonds with their owners and show affection.
If you guys like this type of movie or Tom Hanks movies you really like you to " A man called Otto " you guys would love it. Plus did you guys know the old man who plays old Tom is the preacher on " Little house on the prairie "
i may be just a victim of stereotypes, but it seems unlikely that percy would be the only abusive guard, especially in the 30s, where guards like him would have been the majority, if not the norm.

Right, very well done to this Lady.
Right?! I feel like I’ve seen every Green Mile reaction and it’s mentioned maybe once or twice. Very rarely do people recognize that reference.
To me, this film was the best lesson IN LIFE that I will never, EVER forget.

Amazing performances from the entire cast, but esp Duncan and Hanks. John Coffey, initials JC.
👍👍👍👍👍 this film and your reaction!
Now you should watch two other awesome Stephen King adaptations done by another director - Rob Reiner. He directed - Stand by Me - a coming of age story and Misery - a thriller featuring an Oscar Winning performance by Kathy Bates, in her first role.
Thanks for the great reaction, you two… Niamh’s reaction is like watching a young Emma Thompson.
The young lady was so entertaing in her reactions
I loved your reaction. Thanks.
I notice you didn't have a lot of older movies in your catalog. Here are some of my favorites:
“The Dead Zone,”
“Fahrenheit 451,”
"Forbidden Planet,"
"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,"
"Miracle on 34th Street (1947 NOT the remake),"
"North by Northwest,"
"The Pink Panther,"
"Psycho,"
"Rear Window,"
"Rio Bravo,"
"Some Like it Hot,"
"The Thing,"
"2001: A Space Odyssey (hard to understand without reading the book),"
"Vertigo"
The book is one of Stephen King's best. If you're into reading, give it a try
A disturbing fact about this film is that the actor who plays Percy was/is a creep in real life, too. When he was 50 years old, he married a girl who was only 15 years old. 🤨
This will eviscerate you two.
I can't hardly wait!😂
I think it’s safe to say you are correct
" looks like your mom when she pretends to be dr
Drunked" lol😂
On God little over 3mins in and she is already ready to cry. Boy is she in for snot, tears, heartbreak, just plain ugly crying😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
How this film didn't win Best Picture of Year is beyond me but can't say I wasn't surprised after Star Wars didn't win.
So the actor who played Percy, IRL at age 52 he married a 16 YO girl, paid for her to get DD breast implants. He really didn't have to act for this movie - he really was a jerk. And divorced now.
Based on a series of books by a Master storyteller, Stephen King.
Good Lord! shall I watch this highly anticipated reaction on the channel before my afternoon appointment or wait until afterward to be a mess alongside?
😂😂😂 let us know what you decide
@@CoyzyMovieNight oh afterward was definitely the proper choice! The glimmer of hope JUST right before the horror or devastation was just..oh dear!
@@genghisgalahad8465 😂
"How many years did you spend pissing on the toilet seat before someone told you to put it up?"
"What, you're supposed to put it up?"
She's a bigger softie than even I am, and I'm a total wuss and sobber 😂
Random rant from a former pet shop worker; mice make AWFUL pets because they're dumb and they bite.
And that I can't imagine John Coffey ever making it out of the field alive
@@ryanandy98 yeah, no pitchfork-carrying posse would've left coffey's fate in anybody else's hands
