That first 2 minutes of explanation is the best description of the problem I've heard on youtube or in a written article. Very useful , calming me down a bit. Im having an episode right now and lying in bed desperate.
Muscle spasms are no joke. I was so stressed out when it happened to me for the first time a few days ago. I was like " Something as terrible as this sh*** exists?" Now, I'm a little "used to" to it and have learned how to prevent and or manage such panicking moments. Sitting and sleeping in a correct position has largely controlled the frequency of spasms, and heat/cold applications does give me some relief but I think positioning is a most important part in the healing process.

Hi Merita, glad it has helped you! Once you are out of spasm, you need to take steps to prevent it coming back. You need to strengthen and re-balance your back muscles. You can do this with many programs, including my 6 week back program in the link below. Was just changing the laundry when it happened. Couldn’t move, locked in the position I was in for 15 minutes before getting to the floor, crawling through the basement and up the steps. I’ve experienced natural childbirth twice, but if you ask me today, this was more painful, terrifying, don’t think you’ll ever be okay again levels of pain. Wish I saw this two days ago. I am walking, still sleeping on the floor though. Now it feels like I’ve been in a car accident, and all my an muscles are sore as well from compensating. Hey! That's tooooooo young to be having a back spasm!! I would suggest you consider taking up yoga to relax you back muscles - they are just too tight... Also make sure you haven't damaged a disc - it can happen in teenagers who play a lot of high impact sport. Warmest wishes, Coby

Thank you so much! I was alone in my house and I got a lower back spasm while cleaning my fridge. I was hardly able to breathe! I managed to get a couple of ibuprofen and sit down. I took a few breaths and grabbed a cold water bottle and somehow wedged it between me and the chair. Stayed like that for like 30 min until the pain killers started working. I m using the hot and cold pack technique right now as I write this. Thanks again because I was panicking been on my own

Great video. I had lower back spasms after a muscle strain. Its very true about the vicious cycle you mention. The pain causes you to worry and tense up, which causes more pain, and on and on. Breaking that cycle is very hard to do. It's true about the effect mental stress has on your body. Feeling anxious causes muscle tension.

I'm 18 and have about 10 spasms a day. Some are really bad some are tolerable. I have severe lumbar lordosis and a mild scoliosis. I'm so over the spasms!

This was so nice, when and if you have someone to help you, but for those of us who live alone, we are alone. I try to calm my back down, slowly get up, and get my ice. Sure wish I could have someone rub me gently...I've got Icy hot that I like, but I have a heating pad I use too. It is crazy living with chronic back and nerve pain and never gets better. It is a long journey of enduring every day...some days better than others, but woe when it takes you down again.
My back "locked" last night after bathing my children.I managed to get downstairs lay down and my partner gently pushed my back,it made a loud crack and seems to have cured the locking sensation.
In my case, I've just had my second spasm in almost 2 years. I've gone through online videos but I think this one is really helpful. I took painkillers, applied heat pad, and ice pack alternatively, and applied emulgel. I've started to walk on the second day. Hope this would be over in the next couple of days max. I’ve been struggling with extreme back spasms for years. When they hit it can be debilitating. I appreciate your insight regarding heat and cold treatment and your suggestion re Diazepam. I will discuss this with my doctor and see if it’s an option for me. Thanks for posting this video.
Diazepam, Diclac and tramadol are a good combination for severe back spasms. But any muscle relaxer anti inflammatory and painkiller combination should work.
I’ve suffered at least a couple crippling back spasms that were drawn out over a week. Really bad, couldn’t get up to use the restroom. Wish I had watched this video sooner. Thank you!
A couple of years ago I had what appears to be a muscle spasm because I have three bulging disc’s in my lower back. I was washing my car and I fell down on the ground and I couldn’t get up I managed to crawl into a bank and say help help ambulance came and took me to the hospital. I’ve had these spasms throughout the years they’re very very painful beyond the number 10. Today is 15 March 2020 and I had a small one. It’s The remnant of one that I had last week that was very severe while I was in the shower. When these things hit me the paralyze me because I really can’t even breathe. So I have to hold my breath until I can move and then I’ll crawl in your bed or someplace to lay down because this is freaking extremely painful. Monday I’m calling the VA again so that I can get some chiropractic health. Thanks for sharing this video
Hi, first of all you need to get a diagnosis from a physical therapist (ideally an Osteopath). Then they should be able to give you a personalised set of stretches to do on a daily basis. Stretching is the best way to manage and fend off back spasms. Warmest wishes, Coby
Honestly I spent nearly 6.months in hospital due to a spinal disease that causes spasms... The quickest fix for anyone who gets them. Ask your doc for a packet of Valium, put one under your tounge and let it sit next to one of your big veins under the tounge. *5-7 mins* spasm stops! - don't rely on it daily (build up your back and neck muscles when you can) but this stops any muscle tares

I have degenerative disc disease, cerebral palsy, with a herniated disc and recovering from sciatica in February.. i had a bad muscle spasm yesterday afternoon.. very stiff and very painful especially right when i wake up.. it took me a whole hour to get out of bed.. i live alone any tips for single people? I never experienced so much bad pain in my life as of recently.. I've had back spasms since i was a teenager.. I'm 38 now but never this painful.. honestly it's so true! The fear with the excruciating pain and crying... that makes it spasm even more and trigger the sciatica!! I had bells palsy when I was 21. It made permanent stiffness on my face. I am 37 now, just had back spasm last month. Didn’t knew much about it, but just came across this video. I have started drinking hot turmeric milk now. It makes good blood flow in my veins, Along with exercise and ice packs. You try it too. Thanks
My upper back spasmed almost two weeks ago. Wouldn't go away and was getting worse, so a phone visit with the nurse practitioner got me prednisone. It has helped, I can move my arms again. I see the pt tomorrow. Last times this happened to me I was stuck in bed for a week, couldn't get up to use the bathroom or go to the emergency room. I hadn't heard of people falling to the ground, that was new. Thanks!

Hi Dominick, That's really rotten. Sorry to hear that. Once your spasm has eased off, you need to take steps to address why it happened in the first place, and prevent it happening again. You need to re-balance and strengthen your back muscles so you don't live in fear of it returning. I would recommend my 6 week back strengthening program to prevent a recurrence of spasm. I wet a towel and put it the microwave for 2-3 mins. Put it a grocery bag and use it as a heating pad. I apply it to my lower back, and keep it in place with my waist trainer, wrapped real tight. The cold doesn't work for me. Heat is really soothing. I threw my back out earlier today working out. My foot slipped on the carpet. #TheStruggle #InsomuchPain

I've just had my 1st one last Friday and I'm 38. It just came suddenly and boy it blinking HURT. Hurts esp going to the loo and when you stand up after finishing, the spasm came back and boy I was crying. My partner didn't understand but gosh it is embarrassing. Still in pain and dreading to eat because then it means I need to pay a visit to the loo. I don't know how much I can take this pain. I've been taking ibuprofen, heat packs and putting on freeze gel but it doesn't seem to work. Been trying to walk around the house to be active but seems to be getting worse
I have a lower back spasm and it hurts like HELL!! Been a couple days, but no relief. I can't lay down to sleep cause no position feels good for my muscles to completely relax and waking up in the morning is a complete nightmare! I have to deep breaths and maneuver at the pace of a tortoise to sit up and even then the back is hit with a spasm. It's so terrible 😭 I'm in tears. When will this pass?!
II was in the ER twice in less than a week with excruciating pain now I have some pain meds. I am afraid to lay down, and I’ve barely slept in the last 24 hours

you describe this so well. I have these on occasion since I have had compression fractures. It terrifies me and I scream and take incremental movements and try to relax. Eventually it subsides.
I’ve had back spams 5 times in one morning ! Although this video is helpful if at home etc I’ve had back spasms in an airport , shop etc and I cannot do the above as feel utterly ridiculous. It’s the most debilitating thing I’ve ever had .

Thank you very much for this video. I'm just a bit confused over the timing of the hot-cold application. The first time you say to add hot for 3 min, then cold for 3 min, then when you sum it up, you say hot for 3 min and cold for 1 min. Great video, and thanks again.

Is it ok to do bent over rows mouvement so back spams wont come back? Since gym has shut due to covid we dt have access to weights n machines i feel like my lower back has weaken its so annoyin n painful
I would consider doing moves like superman and reverse sit ups. You can do rows but I would do seated rows and leave your ego at the door. Bent over rows with weight is going to put stress on your lower back my friend. I say this as I'm near enough crippled in pain with back spasms as a result of lifting like an idiot at work on Friday. I pulled my back out at pt that I had knee surgery for. The pain was so unbearable I ended up in the chiropractor office be I am out of line. I was ok I thought but it came s is pure hell.back. I am on day 8. Going back today for the chiropractor. I went to my pcp for muscle relaxes. I go back on Monday to see if I am any better. He told me to take 2 ibuprofen and two extra string Tylenol 500 mg along with my medication relaxant. It’s helped but I am still not quite there yet.
The pain is excruciating and the fear of being immobile makes the pain even worse. When you pull your back out just lay flat where your at for at least an hour. Laying on your stomach is preferable because if you're laying on your back, you may not be able to get back up by yourself. Use leg & arm muscles to support the body when trying to stand. Move slowly to couch/bed and take Ibuprofen/Tylenol together every 4-6 hours with plenty of water for at least 24 hours. Try laying on your side with a thick pillow between legs or on your back with a small pillow at your lower area for lumbar support. Laying on your stomach for extended periods of time is not reccomended. The sooner you're able to get up and walk around, the faster you'll heal. Pain meds and an ice compress helps for first 48 hours. Just make sure to slowly get up every couple of hours for at least 10 minutes at a time. Remember, cold compress is for pain, warm compress is for healing. Most people go through this at least once in their life. Take deep breaths, mind over matter and you'll be fine
I don't speak English very well and it's hard to get for me if I have back spasm or something else. Because in my mind a spasm (a cramp) is something that occurs rapidly and fades away quickly as well. And my upper back pain can be felt like 2 days before the main attack, and the main attack is quite rapid and it always forces me to lay down on the ground. Then it takes literally an hour to force myself to get up despite the pain. And it takes 2-3 days then fades away slowly. I heard a lot of stories about people suffering back pain, but mine is so strong I can't even sit. But the worst thing I can do then is to stay in bed, because it helps when I try to move - stay on feet, walk slowly around the flat and so on. Is it a back spasm? I can feel it in the muscles (no neuro-pains and so on).
Hi, yes that definitely sounds like a back spasm. You need to put yourself through a good back strengthening program to re-program your back muscles and stop the back spasms. A link to my back strengthening program is in the video bio, but there are lots you can try

Really helpful- especially recognizing and acknowledging the pain stress cycle- I have gone to many people over the years- they say do this and do that which requires blind faith- when you explain it so well I am more likely to do it - like the 3 min hot cold which brings up a question - I am in a heating pad with a tens unit trying to unlock my sacroiliac….. how do you feel about heating pads?
Be very careful when applying any creams. From experience, even at room temperature, creams can be extremely COLD! Yelling out in absolute shock is very likely to happen. If youve seen the punisher movie, with the ice pole interrogation... then it may help understand
Has anyone ever been helped by taking "pain" medication/pills for back spasms? Also, there is a BIG difference between kidney stone and back spasm/spine-disc injury pain: back spasm YOU CAN'T MOVE.
Analgesics are good for breaking the "pain-spasm-pain" cycle. But then you need to stretch out the muscles. Alone, analgesics will not resolve a back spasm, but they play an important role in enabling you to get to the point of being able to stretch. Warmest wishes, Coby

Another bout of Sciatica started yesterday great...For some reason thought I had left my front door open after taking a parcel in so went to run downstairs to check totally forgetting my back was really tender....big mistake...back instantly locked up and went into what felt like a million muscles tightening up in my lower back going into spasm. Grabbed the door frame to try and fight the pain but ended up on the floor in agony, thought I was gonna throw up and had the sweats. Took me at least 30 mins to manage to drag myself too my feet some how.
I have a dull ache with debilitating tightness on my left flank where my ribcage connects to my spine. Oddly as soon as I get home and lying on my back it immediately goes away. On days I am home and on vacation I have no flank aches whatsoever.
Hi Jean, you need to get a diagnosis for your pain. What you describe could be a simple tight muscle, or it could be somthing a little more serious. You should never ignore pain. Do get it checked. Warmest wishes, Coby
Hello Jonothan, once you are out of spasm, you need to take steps to prevent it coming back. If you go back to the gym too soon, you can spasm again very quickly. In my opinion, it isn't safe to go back until you have taken steps to address the reason you spasmed in the first place - which is muscle imbalance. You need to strengthen and re-balance your back muscles. You can do this with many programs, including my 6 week back program in the link below. Idk if back spasms is what I have but in my situation I lifted a heavy box and got a sharp pain. After that I could barely walk and any type of bending over or leaning back hurts like crazyyy. Anything that requires my lower back would hurt. If I bend over I get a sudden sharp pain and I would be short of breathe

Muscle spasms are no joke. I was so stressed out when it happened to me for the first time a few days ago. I was like " Something as terrible as this sh*** exists?" Now, I'm a little "used to" to it and have learned how to prevent and or manage such panicking moments. Sitting and sleeping in a correct position has largely controlled the frequency of spasms, and heat/cold applications does give me some relief but I think positioning is a most important part in the healing process.

Was just changing the laundry when it happened. Couldn’t move, locked in the position I was in for 15 minutes before getting to the floor, crawling through the basement and up the steps. I’ve experienced natural childbirth twice, but if you ask me today, this was more painful, terrifying, don’t think you’ll ever be okay again levels of pain. Wish I saw this two days ago. I am walking, still sleeping on the floor though. Now it feels like I’ve been in a car accident, and all my an muscles are sore as well from compensating. Thank you so much! I was alone in my house and I got a lower back spasm while cleaning my fridge. I was hardly able to breathe! I managed to get a couple of ibuprofen and sit down. I took a few breaths and grabbed a cold water bottle and somehow wedged it between me and the chair. Stayed like that for like 30 min until the pain killers started working. I m using the hot and cold pack technique right now as I write this. Thanks again because I was panicking been on my own

Great video. I had lower back spasms after a muscle strain. Its very true about the vicious cycle you mention. The pain causes you to worry and tense up, which causes more pain, and on and on. Breaking that cycle is very hard to do. It's true about the effect mental stress has on your body. Feeling anxious causes muscle tension.

I'm 18 and have about 10 spasms a day. Some are really bad some are tolerable. I have severe lumbar lordosis and a mild scoliosis. I'm so over the spasms!

This was so nice, when and if you have someone to help you, but for those of us who live alone, we are alone. I try to calm my back down, slowly get up, and get my ice. Sure wish I could have someone rub me gently...I've got Icy hot that I like, but I have a heating pad I use too. It is crazy living with chronic back and nerve pain and never gets better. It is a long journey of enduring every day...some days better than others, but woe when it takes you down again.

My back "locked" last night after bathing my children.I managed to get downstairs lay down and my partner gently pushed my back,it made a loud crack and seems to have cured the locking sensation.
In my case, I've just had my second spasm in almost 2 years. I've gone through online videos but I think this one is really helpful. I took painkillers, applied heat pad, and ice pack alternatively, and applied emulgel. I've started to walk on the second day. Hope this would be over in the next couple of days max. Thank you for taking out time to put up this video.

I’ve been struggling with extreme back spasms for years. When they hit it can be debilitating. I appreciate your insight regarding heat and cold treatment and your suggestion re Diazepam. I will discuss this with my doctor and see if it’s an option for me. Thanks for posting this video.
Diazepam, Diclac and tramadol are a good combination for severe back spasms. But any muscle relaxer anti inflammatory and painkiller combination should work.
I learned that some of these, like muscle relaxers, interact with certain meds like anti-anxiety meds. So talk to a doctor.

A couple of years ago I had what appears to be a muscle spasm because I have three bulging disc’s in my lower back. I was washing my car and I fell down on the ground and I couldn’t get up I managed to crawl into a bank and say help help ambulance came and took me to the hospital. I’ve had these spasms throughout the years they’re very very painful beyond the number 10. Today is 15 March 2020 and I had a small one.
It’s The remnant of one that I had last week that was very severe while I was in the shower. When these things hit me the paralyze me because I really can’t even breathe. So I have to hold my breath until I can move and then I’ll crawl in your bed or someplace to lay down because this is freaking extremely painful. Monday I’m calling the VA again so that I can get some chiropractic health. Thanks for sharing this video
Hi, first of all you need to get a diagnosis from a physical therapist (ideally an Osteopath). Then they should be able to give you a personalised set of stretches to do on a daily basis. Stretching is the best way to manage and fend off back spasms. Warmest wishes, Coby
Honestly I spent nearly 6.months in hospital due to a spinal disease that causes spasms...
The quickest fix for anyone who gets them. Ask your doc for a packet of Valium, put one under your tounge and let it sit next to one of your big veins under the tounge.
*5-7 mins* spasm stops! - don't rely on it daily (build up your back and neck muscles when you can) but this stops any muscle tares

I have degenerative disc disease, cerebral palsy, with a herniated disc and recovering from sciatica in February.. i had a bad muscle spasm yesterday afternoon.. very stiff and very painful especially right when i wake up.. it took me a whole hour to get out of bed.. i live alone any tips for single people? My upper back spasmed almost two weeks ago. Wouldn't go away and was getting worse, so a phone visit with the nurse practitioner got me prednisone. It has helped, I can move my arms again. I see the pt tomorrow. Last times this happened to me I was stuck in bed for a week, couldn't get up to use the bathroom or go to the emergency room.

That's really rotten. Sorry to hear that. Once your spasm has eased off, you need to take steps to address why it happened in the first place, and prevent it happening again. I wet a towel and put it the microwave for 2-3 mins. Put it a grocery bag and use it as a heating pad. I apply it to my lower back, and keep it in place with my waist trainer, wrapped real tight. The cold doesn't work for me. Heat is really soothing. I threw my back out earlier today working out. My foot slipped on the carpet. #TheStruggle #InsomuchPain

I've just had my 1st one last Friday and I'm 38. It just came suddenly and boy it blinking HURT. Hurts esp going to the loo and when you stand up after finishing, the spasm came back and boy I was crying. My partner didn't understand but gosh it is embarrassing. Still in pain and dreading to eat because then it means I need to pay a visit to the loo. I don't know how much I can take this pain. I've been taking ibuprofen, heat packs and putting on freeze gel but it doesn't seem to work. Been trying to walk around the house to be active but seems to be getting worse

you describe this so well. I have these on occasion since I have had compression fractures. It terrifies me and I scream and take incremental movements and try to relax. Eventually it subsides.

Thank you for all you do. I wish I knew this stuff about two weeks ago, when I went into spasm while cooking. I somehow had the wherewithal to turn off the fire, and make it to my bed, where I then laid supine wondering if that was how I'd meet my end.
I had this problem two weeks ago when I was playing basketball (without proper warm-up). I was in extreme pain the first 5 days, even with pain killers, until I decided to go to the doctor, where I got two injections, one was a pain killer and the other an anti-inflammatory. 30 minutes after the injections and the pain dropped to half. The doctor gave me three medicines to take for the following week, two kinds of pain killers, one every four hours, and one muscle relaxant to take before sleep. The night after the injections and the medicines was the first night I could sleep deeply. Today is the day 7 after the doctor's visit, I am pain free, little bit tension is still there, I think because I didn't do any massage to the muscles. Hope my experience will help you. Is it ok to do bent over rows mouvement so back spams wont come back? Since gym has shut due to covid we dt have access to weights n machines i feel like my lower back has weaken its so annoyin n painful
I would consider doing moves like superman and reverse sit ups. You can do rows but I would do seated rows and leave your ego at the door. Bent over rows with weight is going to put stress on your lower back my friend. I say this as I'm near enough crippled in pain with back spasms as a result of lifting like an idiot at work on Friday. You first said hot 3 mins then cold 3 mins. Then you changed it to hot 3 mins then cold 1 min. Which is correct?

I pulled my back out at pt that I had knee surgery for. The pain was so unbearable I ended up in the chiropractor office be I am out of line. I was ok I thought but it came s is pure hell.back. I am on day 8. Going back today for the chiropractor. I went to my pcp for muscle relaxes. I go back on Monday to see if I am any better. He told me to take 2 ibuprofen and two extra string Tylenol 500 mg along with my medication relaxant. It’s helped but I am still not quite there yet.

The pain is excruciating and the fear of being immobile makes the pain even worse.
When you pull your back out just lay flat where your at for at least an hour. Laying on your stomach is preferable because if you're laying on your back, you may not be able to get back up by yourself. Use leg & arm muscles to support the body when trying to stand. Move slowly to couch/bed and take Ibuprofen/Tylenol together every 4-6 hours with plenty of water for at least 24 hours. Try laying on your side with a thick pillow between legs or on your back with a small pillow at your lower area for lumbar support. Laying on your stomach for extended periods of time is not reccomended. The sooner you're able to get up and walk around, the faster you'll heal. Pain meds and an ice compress helps for first 48 hours. Just make sure to slowly get up every couple of hours for at least 10 minutes at a time.
Remember, cold compress is for pain, warm compress is for healing.
Most people go through this at least once in their life. Take deep breaths, mind over matter and you'll be fine
I don't speak English very well and it's hard to get for me if I have back spasm or something else. Because in my mind a spasm (a cramp) is something that occurs rapidly and fades away quickly as well. And my upper back pain can be felt like 2 days before the main attack, and the main attack is quite rapid and it always forces me to lay down on the ground. Then it takes literally an hour to force myself to get up despite the pain. And it takes 2-3 days then fades away slowly. I heard a lot of stories about people suffering back pain, but mine is so strong I can't even sit. But the worst thing I can do then is to stay in bed, because it helps when I try to move - stay on feet, walk slowly around the flat and so on. Is it a back spasm? I can feel it in the muscles (no neuro-pains and so on).
Hi, yes that definitely sounds like a back spasm. You need to put yourself through a good back strengthening program to re-program your back muscles and stop the back spasms. A link to my back strengthening program is in the video bio, but there are lots you can try

How long will it take to cure
Really helpful- especially recognizing and acknowledging the pain stress cycle- I have gone to many people over the years- they say do this and do that which requires blind faith- when you explain it so well I am more likely to do it - like the 3 min hot cold which brings up a question - I am in a heating pad with a tens unit trying to unlock my sacroiliac….. how do you feel about heating pads?
Be very careful when applying any creams. From experience, even at room temperature, creams can be extremely COLD! Yelling out in absolute shock is very likely to happen.

Also, there is a BIG difference between kidney stone and back spasm/spine-disc injury pain: back spasm YOU CAN'T MOVE.
Analgesics are good for breaking the "pain-spasm-pain" cycle. But then you need to stretch out the muscles. Alone, analgesics will not resolve a back spasm, but they play an important role in enabling you to get to the point of being able to stretch. Warmest wishes, Coby

Another bout of Sciatica started yesterday great...For some reason thought I had left my front door open after taking a parcel in so went to run downstairs to check totally forgetting my back was really tender....big mistake...back instantly locked up and went into what felt like a million muscles tightening up in my lower back going into spasm. Grabbed the door frame to try and fight the pain but ended up on the floor in agony, thought I was gonna throw up and had the sweats. Took me at least 30 mins to manage to drag myself too my feet some how.

I have a dull ache with debilitating tightness on my left flank where my ribcage connects to my spine. Oddly as soon as I get home and lying on my back it immediately goes away. On days I am home and on vacation I have no flank aches whatsoever.

When you start paying attention to when you may be close to a spasm and you stop and relax . How do you know when it's safe to go back to my workouts?
Hello Jonothan, once you are out of spasm, you need to take steps to prevent it coming back. If you go back to the gym too soon, you can spasm again very quickly. In my opinion, it isn't safe to go back until you have taken steps to address the reason you spasmed in the first place - which is muscle imbalance. You need to strengthen and re-balance your back muscles. You can do this with many programs, including my 6 week back program in the link below. If you do this full 6 week program, and then a maintenance program, it will be very unlikely that your back will be able to spasm. Without re-balancing your back muscles, you could spasm any time. Idk if back spasms is what I have but in my situation I lifted a heavy box and got a sharp pain. After that I could barely walk and any type of bending over or leaning back hurts like crazyyy. Anything that requires my lower back would hurt. If I bend over I get a sudden sharp pain and I would be short of breathe

I work in a warehouse and been through same. Having pain killers and crawling here and there . Cant bend down or even change sides laying without hurting my back
@@harryjsingh6997 hey man! I’m actually doing really good right now. I havnt had any crazy back pains anymore, it took me about 3-4 months before those pains started going away. I didn’t really take any medication or anything just let my body rest and not put an stress on my back
