    I have a 4000 Syncopate I bought new in 1989. It was my first half decent reel paired with a 7 foot medium heavy Daiwa Black Widow graphite composite rod. I believe it was 70 bucks Canadian back then for the combo. Ran it with 8 pound Trilene mono at first. I never abused the reel in rain or sand ever. In the 90s I fished on average 3 times per week. I have caught up to 35 pound fish on it then, with the 35 pounder being carp. I did upgrade the line to 20 pound spiderwire braid when they came out in the mid 90s. I fished that reel up until 2001 when my son was born. No issues with fantastic drag. I have about 15 different reels and rods now and had forgotten about the Syncopate until this year upon finding it in a time capsule of fishing gear from the 90s. I have been using this reel this year for the hell of it with new braid and damn if it isn't one of the best drag reels I own. It is so smooth. I think the key for longevity is not using the trigger and manually opening the bail and also closing it with my hand instead of cranking it closed with the handle. I think a lot of stress can occur to the reel using the crank arm to close the reel over time. I freaking love this reel so much and it is 24 years old! Never opened! Thanks to your video I do plan to open it up and re oil/grease it. It is wild that I am using a reel that I bought in 89 with no issues! And it is so good with big carp and 20 plus pound pike! Thank you for this video. I plan to keep this reel as long as I can and I am 52 now. Just shows if you take care of things they can take care of you. And it is wild they still sell this exact reel! Take care and God bless! P.S. Coincidence but the gentleman that sold me on this reel way back in 89 was also named Todd, funny fact.

      hahahah, nice, David! small world, seller named Todd, and the reel is 24 years old, wow! Big cap and pike (carp are underrated, very hard to catch) That's amazing. So glad you can speak to experiences with the reel going back that far!

      Great to hear. I tried to focus more on longer term utility versus a typical "unboxing" video. I'm glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!

    I like the Syncopate for a trigger casting reel. For my lower budget rods, I’ve found them to be great reels.

    I have been using these since they came out in 1994 . They last me 3 to 30 years of hard use . I have one thats still going after over 12- 30 years. Do not over grease or over oil the bail trigger or it will cause issues . I have around 15 of the 1,000 reels , 5 of the 2500 reels and 2 4000 reels . We use them for crappie , trout, catfish , carp, bass, salmon, steelhead , sturgeon and more .
    I have new in clamshells hanging on the wall if I need them . The only spinning reels I use besides my baitfeeders .
    I love the trigger especially when I am fishing on my kayak . Most my fishing is from a kayak .

    Being that you keep getting the same reels. Are there any parts you suggest keeping to reuse
    for any repairs?

      Just saw this! I keep the parts most prone to fall off, you never know when some part will come lose and end up in the drink, but I pitch the rest. Thanks for watching!

    I got the Shimano FX1000 Ultralight combo. My reel looks the exact same as yours but different colors. Mine is gold, black, and chrome. Paid $35 for it.

    If it had rear drag like the AX series it would be worthy.

      Glad to hear, glad you're getting such great use out of yours. I've since picked up a Shimano Sienna 2500HG and it's a beast, as well. I use it in the rain, & during dirty shore fishing, no problems. Thanks for watching!

      I bought a sienna combo from dicks. For $8. It didn’t have the handle, it would’ve been nice to have an old reel to salvage a hanld from.

    Why not get a better reel and not fill up the landfill so fast?

    • @YFAwithTodd
      @YFAwithTodd  Рік тому +1

      I'm with you on that. I appreciate much nicer reels, more solid, in the $80+ range, but the syncopate is my affordable "beater" reel, for use in sand, clay and rain. Thanks so much for watching!
