  • My previous reel broke and I had to get a new one. I decided on a Shimano Syncopate 2500FG as the replacement for price and features. For about $30, you get a nice reel with some nice features without breaking the bank. So far I like it a lot.

    I like this reel so much that I picked up a second one to go on a new Ugly Stik GX2 I just bought. Can't say enough good about it.

      I just bought two; the 2500FG and the 4000FG. My first Shinamo 'quickfire' reel was in the 80s; loved it... worked great on trout, bass, catfish, Steelhead, Salmon, and striped bass; always used 8lb test - I never had any real issues with that old reel. However, I have yet to try out my new Syncopate reels; will be soon. But it is the 'quickfire' that got me hooked on these reels; especially, if you're a constant caster, or lure user. Now, my 2500FG (will use 8lb test) if very light, compared to my 4000FG (will use 10lb test); one I plan to use of smaller fish, and the other for larger fish. I've matched them up to two Ugly Stiks; one a light 6'6" GX2 rob and the other to a 7' Medium GX2 rod. Just a side note; both of my Shimano Syncopate reels came in boxes, not plastic blister packs. And both came with instructional booklets; something you mentioned absent from your package. It also appears your reel package was cheaper in cost to mine as well; mine were $34.95/before tax. This may in fact be due to the box and instructional booklet; honestly, I don't know. But just letting you know that this reel is packaged at least in two ways, and this may in fact reflect the price difference. But I know they are both the same reel; that I am certain. Also, from my experience, I never had a problem of the reel needing service due to 'popping' the bail once cast and reeling; I never flipped the bail, just reeled it to pop it - no issues.

    I've just bought this reel and I can't wait to test it here in Brazil!! Although i could buy it here, it was much cheaper there. I hope it supports fishes weighting between 2-3kg. Because that is what I'm going for this weekend. Thanks for the video Steven!

      You shouldn't have any problems with 2-3kg. I haven't pulled in anything that large yet, but I have pulled against some sticks and such underwater with no problems. At that point, I would just make sure you had the right line and a stout pole.

    I bought this model a couple weeks ago and put it on a Cabela's Whuppin' Stick with an 8lb line. So far I've landed a brown trout and two striper with it and it's a great reel for the price.

      I still use both of mine all the time. I did something to one of them and it clicks all the time when I reel it. It is almost 2 years old now though. Been looking to upgrade it. I will be moving to Oregon later in the month so I can't wait to get going on trout and steelhead fishing.

    Can you tell me if the handle frame is plastic or metal? I'm assuming the black knob is plastic. FYI - Your crankbaits will swim better without a swivel. Either tie direct or use a snap. I love those Norman Speed Clips, especially for topwater baits.

    I can't stand the 4 position stop. I've missed a lot of hook sets plus I can't keep my lures tight in the hook keeper in my rod while it's not in use.

      Still using my Syncopate I bought back in the late 80's or early 90's.No problems using a hook loop on a rod here,but then again...one has to be smarter than a rock to know how to use it....

    Thanks for the video. My friends & I use the little Shimano IX RD R2000 reel with the quick release & Eclipse Telescopic rods, we love them because they are small enough to put in our back packs. When we go fishing we use our motorcycles to get to more then one river or lake in the same day here in New Zealand. We have not long started fresh water fishing & we have been videoing our outings, take a look at our channel New Zealand Anglers if you like & tell us what you think we hope to start making a lot more videos, but anyway thank you for your one. The Shimano IX RD R2000 are only cheap and wear out quick but the Shimano Syncopate 2500FG looks like it is the next step up & would hold up well but still small enough for us.

      +Paul Murphy Thanks for the tip. I hope to do a new review of this reel after having used it over a year and a half and the different lines I have used will probably be part of it.

      man, i cant reccomend a GX2 enough. Even the reel is comes with is sufficient, it aint great but man is it fun to fish with. I usually fish for croppie/blue gill, sunny and such so with a light line (i use 4-6lb line) its super fun.

    How would you compare it with other reels in the same or similar price range? Like Shimano Sienna, Okuma Avenger or Daiwa CrossFire 3Bi etc...
    Thank you very much.

    • @Wildertech
      @Wildertech  9 років тому

      I haven't tried out too many of those but I know that this one seemed to have the most features at the price point I was looking at. I expect that this new season will see some pretty hard use on these reels and I might pick up another brand or model as I upgrade. I have also been looking at bait casters but I have never used them and want to try one out a couple times before I sink money into it.

    Are u pulling trigger before or during cast? Please explain.

    • @Wildertech
      @Wildertech  3 роки тому

      If I remember right (this was 7 years ago), pulling the "trigger" opens the bail. The rest is just like a normal spinning reel. I liked this concept because it always indexed my finger correctly and made it easy to get my line where I needed it all with one hand. I only needed my left hand to reel in. Hope that helps.

    Nah I have too... You mean to tell us you purchased a 25.00 reel for a bass tournament and matched it with a bait cast rod. Yeah your a smart fisherman..

      Edward Rendon Fishing thanks for your encouraging words 6 years after the video was posted. Way to try and help out a brother angler. We all start somewhere and this was where I started. I caught a lot of fish on that setup before I was able to move to a different rod so we do what we have to.

    Now that you have had it for a year. What's your official call? Good or junk?

    • @Wildertech
      @Wildertech  9 років тому

      +Rob Dyer I have 2 of these reels and I can honestly say that if your budget is smaller ($30), this reel does what it says and has landed a lot of fish. I like the Quick Fire feature a lot as it saves me from having to use both hands all the time and once you get it dialed in, it allows for very accurate casts.
      That being said, if you have more money to spend, I would go with something different. While this is great for entry level or if you don't do a ton of fishing, I am out on the kayak at least once a week with some weeks fishing 4-5 days. I have pushed this reel to the edge. The bail has bent once or twice and I think I bent something internal as one of the reels has a click when I reel it back in but they keep working.
      My one year thoughts are that it was well worth the money I had available at the time and I would put this reel on any of my kid's (or grandkid's when they start fishing) rods as it is easy to use and inexpensive. Stay tuned though because I hope to push up into the $200-$250 range on my next combo later this winter and will definitely have reviews.

      I have had a 4000 Syncopate sine the late 80's or early 90's,it's blue and silver.
      It's pulled in 1000's of fish,from gills,cats,hybrid striper,carp,musky,pike,red and black drum,and many other fish without a problem.Is the quality the same from to now,IDK but I did buy two 1000's last year for my panfish rods.One has a constant click on retrieve but it's the quickfire handle that the fit is a lil loose causing it.
      It's probably your best reel for under $60 and all 3 sizes (1000,2500,4000) can be bought for $29 anywhere.

    What kind of bait are you using?

    • @Wildertech
      @Wildertech  9 років тому

      Johan Gustavsson I think I am using a green pumpkin Senko in this one. It is usually my go to bait when fishing through grass or a lot of shoreline brush. I fish it Texas rigged mostly without a weight. Cast, let I sink for a 3-5 count and reel in a bit before letting it sink again. Seems to drive the bass crazy around here.

      While I don't speak Spanish, I did put your question into Google and think I understand the ask. I have 2 of these reels and have taken both apart to the normal cleaning stages. If you are missing a piece or need help, I would contact the good folks at Shimano and see if they had the part they could send you or a way to find a fix that might work. Due to the price of this reel being pretty low, I don't think I would buy one again at this point, but would probably look for something better. Don't get me wrong though...this reel served its purpose when I needed it and still sits on 2 of my rods.

      I do still use it occasionally. I have 2 and both are on Ugly Stiks. Most of the time I use baitcasting rigs from Lews. I should probably do a video on what I use now and my new setups after a couple years of fishing.

  • @jackabirdie

    why the fuck do you have a spinning reel on a bait casting rod? that thing would cast like 15 times better with a big eye on bottom and the little finger grip not stabbing you in the hand....lol throw a abu black max on that rod and grab yourself a nice ugly stik for the reel and you'll be all satisfied and stuff.
