Great points Chris. It's a perfectly good middleweight and for the euro countries hopefully that will be enough. I have a 23 SP and cannot wait for this to come out, mainly due to any electronic upgrades they do to this might be likely to arrive on the next gen 25 SP, launch control on a MT09? Yes please!
But is Chris more excited about rc990r? Soon we get ninja900, rs990, daytona 765, whatever ducati replaces the supersport or/and panigale v2 with, and whatever else can be an upper middleweight sport.
Nice but I think I would like the cbr600rr better. The engine might be better on this but the I quite like the fit and finish on the Honda more. Considering I'm not going to be able to ride either of these on a limit where you'd be able to want one instead of the other for the specs, the looks (and price) matter quite a lot for me. The XSR900GP or the XSR900F I also fancy the looks. Looking forward to an awesome group test in the future!
R9 is maybe good for those stepping out of the R6 but not the present R1 owners. I'm saying this as I had R1 2001 & MT09 2022. For the R1 owners we need R12 - 1200cc v3 engine 😉👍🏻
I'd take the red and white beauty next to Chris over this new one. This being said, and considering the insane prices of the proper I4 litre sportbikes, I'm going back to the 600... CBR probably, 'cause I like red more.
The R9 has nothing to do with an R1, or the fact that the R1 has been pulled from your market. It’s all about this “new” middleweight class. Either way, it’s aimed right at me, cause I am of the “not paying 25k for a sport bike” crowd. Same with trucks, no 89k pick-ups for me, the market is just stupid in the US. Either way, I’m putting money down this week, and I look forward to Chris and Neevsy wringing the R9 out (The only MC journals I trust)
Thanks, we know it’s nothing to do with the R1, but this will be the largest Yamaha Superbike we’ll be able to buy, so it’ll naturally be considered as a replacement, sad times!
World leaders want us to have us all riding round on cycles or walking everywhere. Certain british politicians seem to think "the age of personalised transport is over".
BTW there will also be a R9-M and of course the GYTR package! so how come it can be that bad? There will be a R9 for most tastes (like R1's are today can make any kit to higher different levels of skill)
I love my '24 XSR900 but I have to admit that if I can get the same engine, better TFT, and a more aesthetically pleasing profile (while still being catered towards street riding), well it makes me very curious. I want to feel/look like I'm in a torpedo shark machine! So... if it's even reasonably comfortable for 1 hour rides then I think I might trade.
I thought the same that it would be 14k, at 12.2k it's the same as an xsr gp. That's an interesting comparison. I plan to view both once cmc have stock of the R9.
@@BikeWorldTVshow yes and no... Considered as replacement is one thing and being replacement is another. 2 different things. By all measurements it's not a replacement. It's like a lot of people considered R7 replacement for R6 which Yamaha clearly stated is not, in their press conference... you see what I'm trying to say ?
Hmm, even as a non sports bike rider I can see why Neevesy and co are buying older GXR 750s for the same purpose. Usable power and enough fun on the track
Surely this is closer to an r6 replacement than an R1. And we have already ridden this machine in the xsr900 gp. I don't think it's gonna feel any different apart from bar position to the r9
I believe that Yamaha have something in the fire. If i was Yamaha, i would only drop my entire line of large capacity bikes if i had some new tech in research and development and i wanted to concentrate on that. Hydrogen? Electric? Alternative fuel? Perhaps a hybrid.
Looks ok but when people have to immediately come out and defend the bike rather than herald it, it's not the greatest start. It'll live in the shadow of a bike from 25 years ago I'm afraid.
Nah people will move on just like they did after they were done moaning about the R7. Bike looks good, has a reliable and powerful engine that is proven both on track and street so I don't know why people hate it.
@@Legend57. Personally, I don't hate it. It will no doubt be very good, but I'm a touch underwhelmed. I think the GSXR750 as a sports road/ track bike, is the benchmark. A little less weight and near 150bhp when you push it, and not as wild (and needing electronics) as the litre bikes. This R9 is warm rather than hot, in my opinion..
Well the reason it has to be defended is because people cant understand what this bike is. much in the same way people incorrectly thought the r7 was a replacement for the r6 people are thinking the r9 is a replacement for the r1. It is not a replacement for either but it would be more for the r6 than the r1. I think its a sportbike with decent power that will be a way better street bike than the r6 was.
@@danlford I get what you're saying but i've been riding a lot of years and I have to say this defensive position is relatively new. Same with cars and the Toyota GT86 with lots of defense why it's ok to lack torque and it's "all about the fun on the road" etc. When it does lack torque and is a bit limp compared its looks. I get that 200+bhp superbike animals are mostly poor road bikes but this fails for me because it's loaded with tech and winglets etc like it's a top-end superbike but is actually a supersport 600 equivalent but much heavier (195kg dry)... When you can look backwards over 2 decades, and be more excited, 2003 Kawasaki zx-6r (636). 118hp. 174kg dry weight, then it's a no for me.
Let’s not disregard the fact that Australian based company extreme creations makes a complete turbo kit for the cp3, giving it 180hp for $4300. $12,500+$4300= $16,800. That’s still $2,100 cheaper than a base R1
I think a lot of people misunderstand the R9. The fact that they gave it a completely new chassis on top of adding suspension and brakes that are above even the level of an R6, says a lot about how serious they are. If they were going for a watered-down sportbike for the road, they would have simply slapped fairings on an MT09 like they did with the R7. This is absolutely intended to replace the R6 in most of the classes it races in, and some of those have already been confirmed. At the same time, the CP3 engine makes it way more attractive to the masses, most of which spend >90% of their time on public roads and not the track. Boatloads of torque at any RPM, slightly more relaxed ergonomics (which can easily be adjusted back to R6-levels btw) and even things like cruise control are all going to help soften the blow of riding a supersport on the road and should help lure in a lot of people who would otherwise not be in the market for one. Lastly, the CP3 has tons of potential. I suspect simply plucking it from the parts bin allowed them to hit that aggresive price point (also, 117hp is plenty for the road), but in race-spec, it shouldn't be hard to get 140-160hp out of that engine. I think Yamaha has a real winner on their hands here, this bike has the potential to breathe some new life into the supersport class. I get that 10 more hp would have been nice, but I think Yamaha is rightfully more interested in keeping the price down and selling a lot of them.
Here in YT there are some track day videos of advanced riders going very very well on a stock MT-09 possibly with an exhaust system, yes, on tracks where the bike would outrun out of the exit those on bikes where a higher gear would be needed. Think Yamaha will make some of us very happy with this sport bike since we are not really looking for the right gearing and be always at 14-15k revs, at least not me, not yet :)
@@JoeStanek-vu7rl in my mind we have to be very careful what we compare this to. It’s absolutely not comparable to the R1. It’s well between the R6 and R1 in various ways. Whether we like this bike will heavily depend upon our expectations of it. As a stand-alone thing, I think it’s cool. It’s a long way up from a 600 in terms of torque, and it’s a long way down from an R1 in terms of power.
I’ll take the organic rush from my tastefully uprated gsxr L6 750 anytime, anywhere over these overly sanitized, electronically aided, fake sensation, woke learner bikes.
The press release track footage looks like the worst form of marketing, with "fast" shots taken at 35 MPH, etc...... You keep us updated Chris, but I'm not holding my breath for anything special
Well, it may please the technology junkies, but I think it isn't pleasing the horsepower junkies....at least at this moment. I would fully expect the same power recovery mods to have the same effect on the R9 as they do on the MT-09, possibly better with (what appears to be) a central front ducting for air intake. If this solidly enters a racing group (MotoAmerica and the like), I expect the 3-banger to get some custom work. It's a strong block, taking double the power with turbos and such and not grenading. According to Cycle World, the specifications of the 1998 R1 in USA were as follows: 1998 YZF-R1 Price $10,199 419 lb dry 40 mpg 1/4 mile 10.32 seconds 129 wheel horsepower 72 ft-lb wheel torque 172 mph top speed
Crazy time... What's gonna happen to the MT-10? Are they gonna provide a 200hp sportbike? Kinda weird they have nothing to compete with the V4 Panigale, etc...
MT-03 - R3, MT-07 - R7, MT-09 - R9, MT-10 - R10...Yamaha is clearly setting this up in plain sight. Not sure why people aren't talking about it. The R10 will be the R1 replacement, not this R9.
Quick heads up. The frames on this may be a bit on the weak side if the higher than normal gen3/4 MT09 frame failures are anything to go by. The frame is not similar to the old R1's rectangular hollw section, its a new monocoque type basically C section type beams with diagonal ribbing inside. Lighter and maybe stiffer but not as strong overall. The frame breakages usually result from people fitting single mounting point sliders... so if you are going to get one and fit sliders, make sure its a double/triple mounting point type.... if such a thing is even possible on a faired bike?
I feel sorry for the EU crowd. R9 is not a race bike but a street bike that can do track days and it will never come close to R1 performance. It will be interesting to see how it stacks against 600cc class and if it can compete with R6 legacy.
I really like the look of it. Having owned 2 MT09’s I can’t say enough good things about that motor, it really is a masterpiece. The price is very interesting. It doesn’t replace the R1 in any way, it’s it’s own thing. Will be very sad to see the end of the R1, one of the most epic bikes.
What CO2 emissions do Superbikes really add to the world compared to every other ICE & huge manufacturers/factory emissions? It’s such a shame that bikes like the R1 have to be culled otr due to ever increasing & tighter emission rules.. The fact this has an IL3 engine and not a parallel twin is a huge plus.. I like it 👌🏼
@@kaw7513 I haven’t ridden either of them but I’d get the Honda based on what I’ve seen so far. A more genuine and honest package in my opinion. Good value for money too.
I like the engine in the way it feels. But it is one noisy engine. Had the gen 3 MT09 and I couldn't stand all the darn noises the engine made that sounded like it was gonna break down. Cam chain tensioner ticking (but it was fine), valves ticking, gearbox rattling on neutral, clutch basked had some seriously weird noises. And I bought it new. My GF:s MT07 sounds like it will run forever.
cant say i liked the headlight arrangement with the new series - combined with the knowledge that its based of another bike it yells compromise. but i think it looks fine on the r9 and i think it'll be a nice replacement for the r6. but it'll be a slow sell to start with because people want innovation, not just bolt on bits and a fresh dress. feels like only ducati are still pushing the envelope with sport bikes. this alone wouldn't be a problem because most bikes are still great rides, but it comes against a backdrop of the rest of the world recycling/milking older ideas and throwbacks in all media for the sake of money. the world is sick of staring at yesterday
When you track test this against its rivals, the supersports some say it doesn't belong in the company of, we need lap times. Only lap times can settle this.
Meh... I was waiting for the R9 to come out as I am Yamaha fan and wanted to change my naked 750 for a faired bike. Well, now I know that I am not getting the R9. Will stick to the original plan which is 09-14 R1. Also you SHOULD NOT be comparing this to the R1 it comes nowhere near it. This would come close to R6.
Good on Yamaha for building this bike and keeping sportsbikes alive. If I was buying a new bike in 2025 ( sadly my bank account says i won’t be ) this would be at the top of my list. Since Triumph refuses to put a fairing and clip ons on the Street Triple 765! Looking at the spec sheet I wish it was a bit more powerful, like 130 at the wheel powerful, but i’m sure if I actually rode the R9 i’d be plenty happy with it exactly as it is. It’s bound to be a very entertaining ride.
Not too sure why the R9 is being compared as a replacement for the R1….Id bet money that the R9 is a fantastic super sport but, its specs are more or less a direct replacement for the R6. Same horsepower with loads more torque. It’s a shame the Europe is losing the R1 but don’t expect the R9 to be its replacement.

This is going to be a cool bike and a good new class. (Heads to my American dealer and orders a new R1)
I think the R9 will become the best-selling bike in Yamaha's supersport lineup, even in the markets where the R1 is still available.
I've already pre-ordered mine.
New bikes seem to cost so much these days or is that just me getting old looking forward to the test ride
R9 is maybe good for those stepping out of the R6 but not the present R1 owners. I'm saying this as I had R1 2001 & MT09 2022. For the R1 owners we need R12 - 1200cc v3 engine 😉👍🏻
Hahaha R9 is perfect bud
@@richrich5827 finger crossed 😁👍🏻
Chris, get well soon, you sound a bit rough today, too much skids and wheelies in the cold? 😁😉⛅️
I think that will be a lot of fun on the road.
I'd take the red and white beauty next to Chris over this new one. This being said, and considering the insane prices of the proper I4 litre sportbikes, I'm going back to the 600... CBR probably, 'cause I like red more.
Released in March 2025..I cant wait that long!!!
Do you reckon it'll lose a lot of low/mid range torque due to the gearing change?
Sooo, are they going to replace the R1 with a R1 with the MT10 engine?
Nope r1 is still being sold and developed everywhere except Europe. Plus the mt10 already has an r1 engine in a different tune
@@thegamingshatt4758 Even if you happen to live where they're still being sold it looks like the R1 will no longer get any major development.
@@benjy288 well maybe now with less strict regulations they can do more with it
The R9 has nothing to do with an R1, or the fact that the R1 has been pulled from your market.
If this sells will truimph finally put a fairing on the street triple rs? Please
CBR 600RR is the TOP choice !!!! In. That range $$$
Successor to the R1? You mean R6? The R1 is still around.
@@nlmaster9811 It’s not for us in the UK, track only version available now.
title should be CHRIS IS SAD
It’s not a successor to the R1. It’s a sports bike in its own right.
Yep, but it will the largest Yamaha road bike we'll be able to buy here in the UK.
It is to the R6
@@BikeWorldTVshow And that's pretty sad
World leaders want us to have us all riding round on cycles or walking everywhere. Certain british politicians seem to think "the age of personalised transport is over".
Naked bike motor with fairing* there I fixed it.
I’m wondering if Chris has had a chance to jump on the new Ducati v4s 2025 yet? Everyone I’ve watched so far has absolutely loved the bike
Not yet, we’re waiting for them to come into the UK, won’t be long though.
@@BikeWorldTVshow ok appreciate that! Looking forward to it :) not that I’d ever afford one 😂😭
No mention of the real brakes for a change?
BTW there will also be a R9-M and of course the GYTR package! so how come it can be that bad? There will be a R9 for most tastes (like R1's are today can make any kit to higher different levels of skill)
I love my '24 XSR900 but I have to admit that if I can get the same engine, better TFT, and a more aesthetically pleasing profile (while still being catered towards street riding), well it makes me very curious. I want to feel/look like I'm in a torpedo shark machine! So... if it's even reasonably comfortable for 1 hour rides then I think I might trade.
Just upgraded to the 2024 MT-09 SP a month before the R9 reveal just having second thoughts. 😢
I thought the same that it would be 14k, at 12.2k it's the same as an xsr gp. That's an interesting comparison. I plan to view both once cmc have stock of the R9.
Good commentary.
well said! Only one correction it's not the successor to R1 it's successor to R6. R1 will be still available for now in the US market
Not to us though, this will be the largest Yamaha sports bike we can buy, so it will naturally be considered as a replacement.
You’re right, but as the road R1 is no more, this is the closest thing to it for us. 🥺
There have been some enticing new releases recently. A good time to be a motorcyclist - but an even better time to be a motorcycling journo!

He has a cold, get well soon Chris!
Yamaha HAVE to launch this in red and white… ❤
At least we will get the red/white one here in the US. 😊
I wish we'd also get the XSR900 GP too, but that doesn't look very promising.
how do you figure the R9 could be a successor to the R1? it's the replacement for the R6
It is, but we’re losing the road R1 and this is the closest thing to it, naturally people are coming to treat it as a replacement.
I believe that Yamaha have something in the fire. If i was Yamaha, i would only drop my entire line of large capacity bikes if i had some new tech in research and development and i wanted to concentrate on that. Hydrogen? Electric? Alternative fuel? Perhaps a hybrid.
I’m an old bugger. I’ll stick to my MT-09-SP
Great bike!
Me too 😂
Looks ok but when people have to immediately come out and defend the bike rather than herald it, it's not the greatest start.
@@ShindigTrader47Sundeck I can respect that
Well the reason it has to be defended is because people cant understand what this bike is. much in the same way people incorrectly thought the r7 was a replacement for the r6 people are thinking the r9 is a replacement for the r1.
Agreed on all points. Good assessment.
@@dsofe4879 It would be nice if they had tuned the engine to be a bit more revvy with more top end power, but I realise it's a cost saving measure.
It's the R1's replacement not the R6's.
Given it will be the exact same price as the GSXR750 I demand a face off video.
I’ll take the organic rush from my tastefully uprated gsxr L6 750 anytime, anywhere over these overly sanitized, electronically aided, fake sensation, woke learner bikes.
I was about to make up my mind to buy the Honda cbr600rr or the cbr650r. But the R9 made me reconsider my options
If anything, the R9 reinforced my decision to get a cbr600rr, or a ZX6R...
What happen to the BMW rebuild ?
Motul have taken it to show off, we have a last ride to do.
The press release track footage looks like the worst form of marketing, with "fast" shots taken at 35 MPH, etc...... You keep us updated Chris, but I'm not holding my breath for anything special
YZF-R8 in-line four screamer with this tech. I personally believe that is what people were craving for. Am i wrong? Comments welcomed.
Golden era is gone for sure.
R7 didn’t have any more “racey” geometry than the MT, I don’t know think? Same frame etc.
According to Cycle World, the specifications of the 1998 R1 in USA were as follows:
1998 YZF-R1
Price $10,199
419 lb dry
40 mpg
1/4 mile 10.32 seconds
129 wheel horsepower
72 ft-lb wheel torque
172 mph top speed
Crazy time... What's gonna happen to the MT-10? Are they gonna provide a 200hp sportbike? Kinda weird they have nothing to compete with the V4 Panigale, etc...
MT-03 - R3, MT-07 - R7, MT-09 - R9, MT-10 - R10...Yamaha is clearly setting this up in plain sight. Not sure why people aren't talking about it. The R10 will be the R1 replacement, not this R9.
Defo on to somthing there @@ZeroX2001

Was hoping for a v2 beater, gotta admit a bit disappointing for me, really wanted one but it's a no from me
Its an R6 replacement. No other words to describe it.
Ffffff that white/red gen 1 R1 .drool.
I feel sorry for the EU crowd. R9 is not a race bike but a street bike that can do track days and it will never come close to R1 performance.
It will be interesting to see how it stacks against 600cc class and if it can compete with R6 legacy.
Nothing is going to be like the first edition of the R1
Triumph 875 Daytona incoming 🏁
Thanks Diddy, yea nah this is the bike the wife approved
I like it 👌🏼
You are wrong we gonna have a R1 Street legal :)

The R 9 is a must have bike

£12250 R9 or £10500 CBR600rr? The difference you can get an aftermarket exhaust and a set of nicer tires…🤔🤔…
@@kaw7513 I haven’t ridden either of them but I’d get the Honda based on what I’ve seen so far. A more genuine and honest package in my opinion. Good value for money too.
This bike would me 1000% better received if the came out and said it’s supposed to fill in the R6-sized hole.
well they kinda did they are calling it a supersport.. supersports have always coincided with 600s
Now Triumph must bring "Daytona 975" to go against R9.
My GF:s MT07 sounds like it will run forever.
cant say i liked the headlight arrangement with the new series - combined with the knowledge that its based of another bike it yells compromise. but i think it looks fine on the r9 and i think it'll be a nice replacement for the r6. but it'll be a slow sell to start with because people want innovation, not just bolt on bits and a fresh dress. feels like only ducati are still pushing the envelope with sport bikes. this alone wouldn't be a problem because most bikes are still great rides, but it comes against a backdrop of the rest of the world recycling/milking older ideas and throwbacks in all media for the sake of money. the world is sick of staring at yesterday
yamaha needs to hire a new designer
Long overdue...
Surely it's not a replacement for the R1, it's replacing the R6 for a few teams in World supersport

The fact that they dont even bother with shock linkages tells you everything you need to know
Why? Real question…

Weird thing is aesthetics wise, I’d prefer the r1 from 98.
