Jenny Boyd- Jenny Boyd Ph.D is the author of It’s Not Only Rock’n’Roll, a book in which 75 of the world’s most iconic musicians reveal their thoughts on creating music. She has probed the minds of legends such as Eric Clapton, Don Henley, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Ravi Shankar and many more; delving into the drive to create; the importance of nurturing creativity; the role of unconscious influences and the effects of chemicals and drugs on the creative process.
As a result of her many personal ties to the music world, former wife of drummer Mick Fleetwood, and the sister-in-law of Beatle George Harrison, and later Eric Clapton, she found herself, from a young age, immersed in the creative world of rock and roll.
At the age of 37, she ended her rock and roll lifestyle and embarked on a degree course, an MA in Counseling Psychology followed by a Ph.D in Humanities (the result of which culminated in the publication of her dissertation, It’s Not Only Rock’n’Roll.)

It’s not true that no one in the West was meditating or doing yoga before the Maharishi came. That’s a myth. Teachers from India had been coming to the West since the early 20th century, at least. Western practitioners were on the fringe, for the most part. But there was activity around meditation and yoga - and also Buddhism, especially Zen - since that time. The interest intensified after WWII, and the Beat writers, poets, musicians, and other artists of the 1950s and early 60s - were very much Buddhist-connected. Poet Gary Snyder introduced writer Jack Kerouac to Buddhism in the mid-50s, and in 1958 Kerouac wrote the famous book “Dharma Bums.” That was almost 10 yrs before the Maharishi came to the West. Poet Alan Ginsburg, who wrote “Howl,” was also very Zen-focused. The Beats were mocked and nicknamed “Beatniks” by mainstream people, but they were a real factor in cultural change before the 60s. They were also connected to jazz, Black musicians and artists, and the civil rights movement. And, of course, marijuana. Indian teachers who preceded Maharishi included Yogananda, Krishnamurti, and the India-influenced Blavatsky, who started the Theosophical Society in the late 1800s. For more about the Beats - and who do you suppose Lennon was copying in art school and his writing? - see the book “Blue Sky Mind: Buddhism and the Beat Generation.” BTW, the WWI generation pursued Eastern philosophies after WWI, in the 1920s; there were many veterans of WWII among the Beats, including Kerouac. After big wars, people turn to meditation and philosophy to make some sense of huge tragedy and loss. Or to stop trying to make sense of the senseless.

I so loved this interview Jenny has remained stunning despite the time we have all traversed. I was part of the hippie movement though younger then most while a New Yorker . We walked for peace on Washington DC closed down school in protest of Vietnam. It was the last time war was broadcast daily. This only raised the anger. i am so glad that these kind of FACTUAL videos are being made....any of the videos i have watched with people that were actually in india with the beatles the narrator(s) recreate the beauty of the experience and the profound possibilities....i am 72 now but was in the army from 68 to 71, totally different experiences....kids under 50 are being taught weird things..... like the free love of the 60s created aids, the beatles broke up because of what john said about jesus, hendrix drugged and took criminal advantage of all the white women he was with and on and on....these videos are going to be sooo important 100 years from now....i somewhat awakened during my 3 years in the killing machine but after i got out the world was really, really, really a different place "back in the day".....i learned from my killer 3 years that ALL ANY war is wrong...all war does is show which side had the most bullets.... recently i saw a video where the people were trying to put marharishi in the same category of jerry fallwell jr.....come on now....keep doing these....my body and soul tingles when i listen to these

That is horrible; the falling out of the Beatles & the Maharishi. I have the impression he was blindsided by the abrupt leavetaking of the London crew. How awful the sexual misconduct accusation was not disclosed and worked out as to truth or fabrication. Terrible business that.

So many people throw around the phrase “collective consciousness.” The notion derives from a mashup of two theories expressed by Carl Jung: the collective UNconscious, and universal consciousness. The two concepts are not synonymous. I wish speakers like John Gray would get it right. They speak as though these are realities, rather than theories and models of reality, and that everyone understands; but they’re not. (Not hating, just critiquing and clarifying.)

Privileged indeed. But The Beatles were actually working; creating much of the music of my favorite album of all time. The rest were hanger’s on who somehow didn’t need to work and could meditate for 3 months. I’m still skeptical about it all; as it ended up being - like LSD - another spiritual dead end for the fabs. I really don’t know what’s accomplished sitting cross-legged for hours; while someone else is building a bridge across the Hudson river or fixing a car in Nebraska. It all seems too elite from my more balanced 57 year-old perspective. But “White” album still rules 👍
Meditation was not a deadens fir the Beatles. George meditated the rest of his life & Ringo & Paul still do Transcendental Meditation. In fact, Paul had his grandchildren learn TM.
TM is a grift. I paid a weeks wages for 'Hi Eng".
