    Average FPS is not useful; you need to include 1% lows, which is where memory typically makes a difference.

      if you use 1 stick of RAM, you operate in single channel mode. 2 of them work in dual channel mode. So the CPU communicates with the RAM in 2 channels, doublind the bandwidth. The CPU usage will always be lower in dual channel mode, as the data transfer is more efficient. Be careful, cause AMD and Intel, newest generations also prefer the RAM slots to be populated differently. So if you populate for example 2 slots out of 4, there is also a recommended way to do that. Most motheboards have it written on them. Back to dual channel mode. Also match colors when installing RAM.

      better said, you will loose ~25-30% of the RAM performance (it's not about the entire system's performance)
      IF you are using a single 16GB stick, over 2x8GB.

    @ChinchillaBONK Рік тому +3

    Thanks for this. Your channel is severely underrated.
    Just want to check, is it memory controller issues that are making the performance difference less than expected, or can it be fixed with future motherboard drivers?

    Thanks. This was actually really helpful information.
    About a month ago I finally built myself a new computer. I had to choose between going with a new DDR4 motherboard or a DDR5 motherboard. My main dilemma was I had good DDR4 ram that I could resuse to save a bit of money immediately... Or if I went with a DDR5 motherboard that would leave me open to upgrade to better DDR5 memory years down the line without having to rebuy a new motherboard. I went with the DDR5 in the end because hey, in for a penny, in for a pound. I still think I made the right decision as, if I ever need to upgrade my ram, I won't be blocked by my motherboard so it likely won't actually cost me more moving forward. But this breakdown would have been extremely useful in KNOWING that buying DDR5 ram didn't actually help me in the short run.
    cliffs: This is the kind of information that is useful to have when building a new computer. Even if it isn't as sexy of a topic as GPU performance or CPU stuff.

      You did the right thing. In a few years you can sell and buy a new one with the money you have. Just like you can sell the DDR4 now. The important thing is to do it quickly, otherwise you're unlikely to be able to sell the DDR4 at all next year. Just like a motherboard and a processor. If they're okay.

    This was my experience with a very old desktop computer. It used DDR3 ram. When I wanted to upgrade the ram, it was a bad experience as DDR3 is almost obsolete, very hard to find and --- surprisingly EXPENSIVE because it is outdated and rare. Therefore if considering to change the motherboard, do think of the future. If you buy a DDR4 based motherboard now, in future DDR4 will be very hard to find. By that time, most shops will stock DDR5. Less manufacturers will make DDR4. The performance difference aspect is almost irrelevant.

    Not being a gamer, but rather an AUDIO Production enthusiast,,,, since the (DAW) processing is different from graphics, especially in rendering, is it more beneficial to run DDR4 than DDR5? I am thinking of building a PC with ProArt Z790 Creator, with i7-13700k utilizing the integrated graphics, not a card. The Z790 is a DDR5 system and I believe the i7 13700k is rated at 6000mts. I want the system stable so I won't be overclocking and intend to set the limit in the bios at approx 5200. I have decided to use 64GB of DDR5 at 5600 CL 28 hopefully reducing latency( for external MIDI devices) and have a bit of a headroom in the speeds to avoid hiccups. Any comment or advice you can give is useful. Thanks!

    I think in terms of future upgradability people who are building a new computer should buy a DDR5 compatible motherboard because DDR4 is at the end of its shelf life(this is why DDR4 ram kits are so cheap right now, retailers are trying to get rid of all their old stock). DDR5 is coming down in price now. I recently bought a 32GB DDR5 ram kit for around £110. If I upgrade in 5 years the motherboard and CPU should still be compatible with DDR5 which means less expense.

    You should get fastest M.2 drives, put them in Raid-0 and test loading time on heavy games to test those memories properly and see if there is any change on times.
    I fill the storage is the biggest bottleneck as GPU already have enough VRAM to hold data and avoid memory usage.
    City Skyline is a game that keep loading data back and forward from RAM/VRAM/Storage, that game also won't show any change in FPS but it will reduce stutter as you move around and load assets in real time, most game don't need the higher speed but we might see the benefit in the near future as new game engine make better use of it.

    Choosing AM5 (DDR5), for one reason only. In a few years you will be able to upgrade the processor and if a new (accelerated) DDR5 comes out. And if you choose Intel, you will have to change the motherboard in a couple of years if you want to change the processor. And the old motherboard is unlikely to sell. Especially DDR4:(

      @@weirddylan7721 I looked at many videos about this subject and have not come to a clear conclusion yet about what to buy. But you will save money now and having the same performance. So when it´s time for that "future proof" upgrade people are talking about you would technically have money left from the DDR4 buy to possible make up for those extra costs. There is no easy way of knowing what´s comming or what the prices will be. And people can not know your needs either, specially in the future. If you buy the high end gear now you might keep them so long that upgrades are not buyable even when it´s time and then what did you save. My comp now is pretty much fine and quick except I´m a bit limited by the 1060 6gb gpu and it is 7 years old and was mid+ stuff when i bought. I would go for 32gb ram on my next buy instead of current 16 since I seem to be topping out. Had to close some browsers to be able to play diablo 4 beta. I think you will not go very wrong either way. But if you are a bit low on cash right now I would go for a DDR4 setup with that 13600KF. Personally I don´t think I´m upgrading so often that it´s worth to future proof my setup unless they come out with something insane with ddr5.. but then again it´ll probably be expensive like hell first 1-2 years.. So.. Glad I could help
