@@johncook9392 Mad wold by Gary Jules is an amazing deep track...the fact (edit: he) wrote it before facebook, twitter, and social media in general... Oscar Wilde nailed it here...enough said. Lovely track.
Just enjoy both versions. Themes in common, but substantial differences too. I used to prefer Cash's cover but I've come round to this. Cash's version is simpler (not a bad thing) but the discordant bits of this song are incredible. Cash's version conveys sorrow and regret perfectly. It's much neater. Trent's original is deliberately messy and paints a picture of hopelessness and mental degeneration. Both very powerful. Maybe one resonates more with you than the other. Maybe neither do. Such is life.
Exactly it’s the same for the studio version of this song and the live version in this video. The studio version while still a powerful rendition it’s lacking the punch because they can do multiple takes if needed to get everything perfect. With the live version we see here it’s in one take so Reznor can kinda think back and visualize the mindset he was in when writing the song and tap into it. It’s a lot more raw emotion than the studio version. Same goes for the Cash cover. It was just him and a guitar on the track. As you listen to the song you can hear the pain in his voice and you can almost visualize that he is reflecting on his life as he sings. In the video Cash seems like he is about to break down and that adds to the rawness of the song. It was almost like Cash knew he would pass away soon.
Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you dont feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day. :)
Basically I am 30 years old, had tons of potential but squandered it all, I have been an opiate (and now heroin) addict for the netter part of a decade, but I’ve always needed something to feel “normal”, and like I fit in and feel comfortable with people. Well basically now I finally have an ok job that could lead somewhere, but I am fucking it up with my addiction, I can’t quit because it’s the only real thing on my resume. But I’m just so depressed, my best friend died three years ago, and other than my mom I have no family I am close with. I ruined all my old friendships but one and he is far away. I just feel like I had a shot in life but I blew it and that’s just how life goes sometimes and I should just give up.. idk
I love both versions a lot, but after listening to them both I think that I like the original NIN version because of the eerie, discordant tune in the background. It creates a more frazzled and broken atmosphere than the somber, composed sound that Cash has. Cash has a great voice and beautiful singing, but the unsettling and jarring sound behind Trent's is really what I find best for the lyrics. What a beautifully crafted, sorrowful song.
This is literally one of the best songs ever written. Trent is able to transport so many emotions when he is singing it on stage - unbelievable. He got through it all and shows us how it felt. Blows me away every time.
I Love Johnny cash’s cover of this song as much as Trent’s original, because they’re both equally powerful, in different ways. But, honestly, Trent’s version hits me a lot harder. When I hear Johnny cash’s version, it feels so solemn, yet hopeful and triumphant. But Trent’s version just crushes you and cuts you deep down in your soul. The way Trent barely whispers through the first verse as if he’s on the verge of completely breaking down, coupled with the dissonance of the first chord perfectly conveys the darkness and hopelessness of his state of mind, that makes that pain palpable, and the way he expresses it in his lyrics you could almost FEEL the hopelessness he’s feeling. Then when he plays the brighter chords of the chorus, it’s as if he’s fighting to hold on for a reason to live or like he desires to change. And when he starts belting it’s like he’s crying for help and in desperation. Every time I listen to it, I cry because to me it feels like someone out there understood exactly how dark, miserable, self hating, and lonely I feel sometimes like Im not alone in my sadness and the vulnerability he bears feels like a gesture of solidarity and empathy.
Me too, I personally love the musical arrangements of this song so much too one of the best with the crescendo and the distorted sounds one of the best displaying this kinds of feeling
To all the Trent vs Johnny Cash arguments.... They both felt this song. Yes, Trent wrote it, but both of them do an outstanding performance with it. Both have an obvious strong connection with the words. If you know anything about either of them, you know its true.
+Phillip Betts I think the style in which they sing it is very different, Trent sings in the now - he regrets the things he's done recently. Johnny sounds very much like he sings like he regrets a lifetime, things that have happened over years. Probably just an age thing, but that's how it feels to me, Trent's version sounds like he has hope of changing, Johnny's sounds like it's too late to change.
+Phillip Betts Personally I think Johnny's vocals completely ruin the song. The way Trent sings just makes this song. Something Johnny's vocals just couldn't recreate.

"I never got to meet Johnny but I'm happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out. I have goose bumps right now thinking about it." - Trent Reznor in regards to Johnny Cash Hurt video.
To all those comparing Cash's cover of this to this, let me tell you something. Whilst they might be the exact same song, the two versions are very, very different. Both mean something to the separate artists. Johnny brought a melancholy and even more harrowing feel to the song. They are both very, very different pieces of music, equally as good. I might not be much of a Nine Inch Nails fan, but this is a masterpiece, and so is Johnny's version.
It is a testament to Trent's undeniable brilliance as a song writer that he can write a song that can evoke so much emotion, be it him who is singing or Johnny, both versions hit like a freight train, and stay with the listener for an age after.

But is it really? I'd say it's about a man sub-combing to the voices in earlier songs of the album and killing himself and still not getting rid of him. Justmiss jamey Johnny Cash was an addict for part of his life he didn’t have the same booming voice when he did this song as he did when he was younger. It was also one of the last songs he recorded and the last video he made before he passed away.
@@PrincessNinja007 The original Nine Inch Nails hurt is about how much you hurt yourself with your addiction and how much your life went to crap. Johnny Cash is about how not only you hurt others but also how you hurt yourself by how you feel regretful about the mistakes that you made in the past.
Every time I get goosebumps, a lump in my throat and I fight back tears with this song. This is just so emotionally striking! (Johnny's version NEVER does thàt for me and never will.)
Johnny Cash's cover is just awesome. The song seemed to represent his whole life and what he was going through at that point. So it was an excellent interpretation. But, it's Trent's lyrics. They are part of his life and you can feel him living them in every performance he does of this song. And that is hauting and priceless.
Staraptor is ugly! I agree with you I could give less than two shits about Rick and Morty it was actually Johnny Cash's version that brought me here and I think that Johnny Cash's version is better, I'm sorry if that offends or makes me heretical a
I love this band, such a talented guy and this song has always been one of my favourites, at some of my darkest moments I've played this and it has helped me immensely.
The slight change he did in melody of the chorus destroys me: Album version: You could (E) have (F#) it all (D) Live version: You could (E) have (F#) it (C#) all (D) The way his voice slides from the high F# down to the C# and up to D... holy shit
THE original! Who composed snd writes has always more credits IMO. Covers can sound very good or better, but the feelings, melody comes from the author. Great NIN song, great Cash cover. I had to write this! Thank you Internet!
hurt is so beautiful and dark, a song that totally resonates with me and many many people I would imagine, we all suffer pain for different reasons a true gem
So I’ve been emotional throughout my life... And through the differing things I’ve loved this song has returned countless times. When you realise something is great beyond understanding.
I love the way that Trent drags out the line “I am still right here” accompanied by a pregnant pause in the instrumentation right before going straight back into the pre-chorus in this performance. Really helps drive home those feelings of desolation and abandonment.
Beautiful description… I never noticed until a recent interview his use of a type of white noise in songs. The way they made it years ago is funny. I think he discusses it in the Song Exploder series. You can still feel his pain when he is listening to himself singing Hurt.
You do know what brought me here! Starts with "H" > wish I never walked that road. Its so hard to walk with a big weight on your feet. Working on it and that song kind of helps. Why OH why. Please take care and wish me luck>> I am very hopeful and I do have everything going for me. I think Jonny Cash version might be better for me>>Maybe.
Hurt will always be your song because it stopped me from self harming myself until I wrote a poem that helped me not do it. Even though Johnny Cash's version is good he wouldn't have been able to recreate it without you. Don't ever forget that fact. ☮️♥️🙏🏾
I got to see NIN and soundgarden in vegas. it was truly amazing. this song was the best of the entire night. but just being able to see chris cornell was truly special.... much love everyone.
You want to know what music is? Jonny cash covering nine Inch nails. that is music. Hurt is complete as a musical piece now. I have a new 2018 goal, to learn this musical piece in any musical instrument. I don't care of the version. NIN and Jonny cash, both are genius. I won't be a moron to choose between the two. I just wanna learn this song and, in the process, make my own version of this musical masterpiece. \m/
ManGa, +To see if we still feel. He went numb, it was not from drugs. No longer necessary or needed. What remains must be felt n3fold. Johney knew -he felt it, now I have as well.
I saw an interview with Trent about Cash’s cover, and it was powerful when he said, “It’s not even my song anymore.” Not taking anything away from this talented songwriter but it’s like this song was written just waiting for Cash to cover it.

I feel like us young people appeal more to the Johnny Cash version but as we go through life and experience it we understand and appreciate this version more
I'm 16 and I prefer this version, but I can appreciate Johnny Cash's version as well. Also, I think what you said could be applied to both versions but more to Johnny's. He applied the song to the end of his life. He's looking back on his life and regretting things that he's done.
Im 28 Ive always preferred this version but Cashs is deeply depressing because he had so many deep regrets and he passed away shortly after recording the song. To be at the end of your life and haunted by your decisions and of course impossible to undo them and only having the clarity when its too late
Pls guys..show me music and bands like this today. There is not a single band .. there's no music like this. Thank you god that I was born in the 1970's so that I was an 80's and early 90s kid. Iam REALLY REALLY happy that I had the luck to know, feel and ecperience REAL music. REAL bands .. bands with a message, bands that lived for the music. Todays bands only makes music for the money. I am really sad about how music changed. And if I have a look at young people today and what music they like...I really can't believe and can't understand it.. Will we ever again see something special like Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and all these real musicians and bands not founded by a casting show or shit like that?

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liars chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I will keep myself
I would find a way

Justmiss jamey Johnny Cash was an addict for part of his life he didn’t have the same booming voice when he did this song as he did when he was younger. It was also one of the last songs he recorded and the last video he made before he passed away.
@@PrincessNinja007 The original Nine Inch Nails hurt is about how much you hurt yourself with your addiction and how much your life went to crap. Johnny Cash is about how not only you hurt others but also how you hurt yourself by how you feel regretful about the mistakes that you made in the past.
27 and I now know I'll never get rid of the nightmares that paralyzed my brain continuously for so many years. Feels weird listening to this again.
This is deeper than a endless hole. So much feel in it. And love it.
Best live performance of Hurt I've ever seen yet. Epic.
Amazing. Original and best. Trent is the man.
Every time I get goosebumps, a lump in my throat and I fight back tears with this song. This is just so emotionally striking! (Johnny's version NEVER does thàt for me and never will.)
best valentine's song ever
This track is beautiful. If you can't appreciate both interpretations then more fool you. I love them both.
"He's not coming back, is he.."
"...No."
Mike Leslie still hits me in the feels!
@@grumlindsay8157 Me too. One of the greatest moments from Rick And Morty.
Inmate : What are you in for?
Rick Sanchez : Everything... 😪
I was so happy when they used this
Right in the feels bruhh 😣
Johnny Cash's cover is just awesome. The song seemed to represent his whole life and what he was going through at that point. So it was an excellent interpretation. But, it's Trent's lyrics. They are part of his life and you can feel him living them in every performance he does of this song. And that is hauting and priceless.
"What are you in for?"
"Everything..."
Staraptor is ugly! I agree with you I could give less than two shits about Rick and Morty it was actually Johnny Cash's version that brought me here and I think that Johnny Cash's version is better, I'm sorry if that offends or makes me heretical a
I'm not staring at you, I am taking your mugshot
the likes were 420, i was the 421th.... well, time to blaze it
The best episode for this season ..i loves this TV Show
I cried in that scene
THIS is my favorite song of all time.
johnny cash did it better!
+Aliki riddle so gtfo This is Nine Inch Nails bitch
+Bunz, y'all ehm maybe Your Mother
+Martin Vojak i didnt say this was bad, i just said johnny cash did it better !
+Aliki riddle You can't compare them. They both performed it in completely different ways
I can’t believe that I’ve been able to witness this live at Red Rocks, CO three times!! Trent is the man
Trent gets better with age, so much passion & emoting in his performances. Plus he’s still gorgeous
I love this band, such a talented guy and this song has always been one of my favourites, at some of my darkest moments I've played this and it has helped me immensely.
Just wow! I'm sure I'm listening to the song for the 500th time. But I always have goosebumps like the first time!!!
Wonderful!"Hurt"one of the most beautiful lyric ever. Thanks Trent Reznor♡
The slight change he did in melody of the chorus destroys me:
Album version:
You could (E) have (F#) it all (D)
Live version:
You could (E) have (F#) it (C#) all (D)
The way his voice slides from the high F# down to the C# and up to D... holy shit
THE original! Who composed snd writes has always more credits IMO. Covers can sound very good or better, but the feelings, melody comes from the author. Great NIN song, great Cash cover. I had to write this! Thank you Internet!
I'm Sorry Rick. Maybe next season....
+Leon And now we wait a year and a half.
+StudioInkblot One must take time to sow seeds before one can reap the crop
+Leon FUCKING YEAR. Second best series of all serials, i've watched. But fucking year. I'll die awaiting next season.
+StudioInkblot or longer!
+Leon Don't remind me.. i haven't processed all of this yet
Both versions give me shiver, and goosebumps! So real
hurt is so beautiful and dark, a song that totally resonates with me and many many people I would imagine, we all suffer pain for different reasons a true gem
This is one of the best songs ever written
Nine Inch Nails, Johnny Cash and Hildegard von Blingin' - three amazing interpretations, love them all
no need to include the third
This song is beautiful and tell the story of my past which I overcame
When I came here:
2013:Subscriptions
2014: For Nine Inch Nails
2015: Rick and Morty
2016: Election
2017: Logan
2018: Depression
Deeply concerned that 2018 depression isn't followed by a 2019 update
Smallville too
2018: for Caroll Danvers t-shirt too
Dude I joke a lot about everything but are you okay Bro? Give us a update :)
will you come back here for 2020?? :D
People are going to hate the comments on every song with this title for at least a year and a half.
Man, I saw them at MSG on12/8/94 for the Downward Spiral Tour and they are just as amazing as they were at that show. That was an experience.
Proof real artists are not dead.
Nine Inch Nails: Is this all there is?
Johnny Cash: This is all there is.
Man does this song hit you in the feels.
This and Something I can never Have. The Best 2 Songs Ever Written.. Thanks TRENT...
good god this song fit so well to the finale
You do know what brought me here! Starts with "H" > wish I never walked that road. Its so hard to walk with a big weight on your feet. Working on it and that song kind of helps. Why OH why. Please take care and wish me luck>> I am very hopeful and I do have everything going for me. I think Jonny Cash version might be better for me>>Maybe.
Me too. Keep ur head up. The words express exactly how I feel with my addiction it's crazy. Good luck !
christoph lieding ....should have listened to Nancy. just say no.
I’m glad I listened to the NIN version before the cash version.
Saaaaaaame there's something in nin version thay I can't put a name at.
yeah so you know that the second one was better
Sparna music doesn’t works like sports do, dummie.
what do you mean?
He says music is fucking subjective just as beauty
Hurt will always be your song because it stopped me from self harming myself until I wrote a poem that helped me not do it. Even though Johnny Cash's version is good he wouldn't have been able to recreate it without you. Don't ever forget that fact. ☮️♥️🙏🏾
this song makes me cry everytime. trent thank you
Goosebumps... every time...
I bet there's a lot of people in the crowd thinking that is a cover
That is so true. But Cash's version and Trent's are both perfect. They both feel it so much but in different ways.
I got to see NIN and soundgarden in vegas. it was truly amazing. this song was the best of the entire night. but just being able to see chris cornell was truly special.... much love everyone.
I'd like to see Thom Yorke cover this
That would be amazing!
That s good idea
Omfg yes
he should be. im tired of replaying his cover of wonderwall
Awesome sounding. Please, Thom.
Any success? It's a pretty easy song technically.
You know, for the longest time I thought Johnny Cash wrote hurt. Huge respect to both artists for a simple, yet powerful song
Did you learn???
This song made me cry so damn much
Who is human that cannot relate? Even if you're not an addict... Pain is pain is pain...
Love is love is love... Johnny Cash cover is amazing
🪶💕❤️💕🌿🕊️
"What are you in for?" "Everything " 😔
Love this song, love you Trent!
When grandpa goes out for ice cream... :'(
Free Rick Wubba lubba dub dub
And don't back :'(
Seems like he hasn't found his favourite sort of ice cream yet...
TITS OUT TILL RICKS OUT
lets get shwifty MOTHAFUCKERS
Both versions of this song gives me a lump in my throat, Like an arrow straight to the heart, a fellow human being, struggling with addiction. 😢
This song had no meaning to me before Rick and Morty. Now it gives me the chills everytime. Dammit, Birdperson NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
birdperson nooooooooo!!!!! lol
I'm Jerry Smith, and I love sucking big, sweaty [bleep] And licking disgusting furry testicle sacks
"He isn't coming back.... Is he..?"
*"No..."*
DAMIT RICK, why u make me feel these feelings :(
lol fr
I'm here just for that lol
I know right
SAME
ManGa,
+To see if we still feel.

1 & 6 for me.
Am I the only one here because NIN is amazing?
nope
man, I'm just here.
bahamut24 No I am here for the same reason
Nope
bahamut24 In fairness, Rick and Morty probably wouldn't have used this awesome song to begin with, if NIN wasn't awesome.
I feel like us young people appeal more to the Johnny Cash version but as we go through life and experience it we understand and appreciate this version more
Couldnt have said it better
They both appeal to two very different types of pain; both equally prevalent throughout life.
Very true. In my late 30s, starting to come around to this version suddenly.
Will we ever again see something special like Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and all these real musicians and bands not founded by a casting show or shit like that?
if you're here because of logan and you're new to NIN, I'm jealous- listen to everything.
