Bought the plans and used for my very first new miter saw project. Not an experienced woodworker and these came together nicely, even with my mistakes. Stained them with an outdoor stain and they are awesomely sitting out on my deck.
My dad built a chair much like this 50 years ago. I still have two in the back yard. Thank you for bringing back memories for me. I did not find the plans on your etsy page. Thank you again. Don't tell dad but your chairs are a little nicer😊
Awesome! I’m a girl but I have always wanted to do something this cool. Thank you for making this look easy for people like me who has no idea how to do it
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I try to aim these project to brand new/beginners. They are a little longer because of that, but I'm glad that it helped you out.
I just finished this build this weekend. Great design and measurements. The backrest will fit perfectly snug between the assembled seat/leg assembly but needs a little persuasion. I added a cup holder to mine. I also had to add shims between the backrest and armrests because when I tightened the reinforcing screws the legs racked a bit. You could pre-paint the pieces before assembly for easier painting but keep in mind you will need to touch up. The only modification I would make would be to widen the seat/backrest maybe an inch more, mainly because my girlfriend has a big arse. Also note if your plan is to make these the centerpiece of your deck/patio, keep in mind it's construction grade lumber you are looking at here; imperfections are evident and the norm when spending about $23 in materials. Thanks so much for posting the video and get that double one going!
Double....looking forward to seeing the double chair build. I recently built two of Ana White's outdoor chairs. I tried pocket holes and it was a nightmare. On the second one I did what you did here with the countersinking.
22:08 double! Definitely like both the single and the double! Also would like equally a table or a cooler between the seats on the double! Thanks for sharing this great build Andy! Have a great weekend! Would love to see some additional craft planter designs. Maybe a triangular one!
Nice build. I might give that a shot. Seems a bit heavy. But my brain is already reducing the weight. Also thinking of making it foldable. Just for storage. Again good build.
It never even crossed my mind to make a double version. I made a couple sets of these (using pocket screws) last summer for my house and I gave away a set to a friend. They turned out to be more comfortable than the store bought chairs we had purchased when we moved into this house. I originally sized them up a little to fit some cushions that I loved but I found I like the chairs without the cushions so much better. Keep up the great videos.
I agree they are very comfortable. I am going to try and make the double with some lighter materials, so the thing doesn't weight 100lbs. I appreciate the support.
It seems to me you could build one that has a side table attached and then you can just slide a second chair against the side table piece and now it is the same as if it had been built as a double, but not as heavy as a double.
Great video and plans look like they're done well I haven't bought them yet but I'm tempted and also if you're building a 20x20 seat square it's a little weird 17 inch slides plus 2 on each side that's 21 and your other slats are 20 length shouldn't they be 21??
Question, at 3:29 in the video, you say to cut (2) pieces at 24", do you mean 24-1/2" as I don't see anywhere else in the video to use 24" pieces, unless I missed something. BTW I made these and they came out great. Thank you.
I like the chair because of it's simplicity. We make a chair that's a bit more complicated, but I think we will make a couple to see how they sell. I'm also gonna see about making the back leg with a 2x4. I'm not to keen on the looks of the 2x6. GREAT chair though, and we'll be watching for the double.
Nice job. I've been looking for a design & this is an ideal build for my patio set. I will have to invest in a mitre saw though & if you can recommend any brands I'll be happy to check them out.
So the Hercules saw I have is good. Eventually you'll want to upgrade blades. Or this dewalt one on Amazon is very similar at a similar price. amzn.to/3ywDHfb
Hey there! I built a lot of things in my life but never a chair and I built yours. It did not come out perfect but not too bad. Got a question. What is a good blade for 12-in miter saw to cut yellow wood and white pine so I don't get the splintering? Thank you very much
First off I would check out a high quality blade. I use a CMT blade like this one amzn.to/3R5JYoS I would also build a zero clearance plate if you haven't already. I have a video about them right here. ua-cam.com/video/ylmA6PxDX4c/v-deo.htmlsi=pCxzWwtOKVnAiYSP
Great question. If you aren't going to paint or stain it, regular pine can hold up for a long time if not in contact with the ground. otherwise a deck stain or exterior paint works great.
@@cedarriverwoodworking It's not a big deal. But I would just make the side rails of the seat 1 1/2" shorter and have the front 2x4 extend out to the legs. That way you won't see the butt ends of the 2x4's right up in front. Still a great looking chair!

This is a nice design and easy to make but man, it’s just heavy, especially if you use treated lumber! Any ideas on how to this lighter, perhaps using 1x4s for the sears (frame and slates), 1x4 for the arm rests and perhaps 2x2 for the front legs, 2x4 for back legs and 2x2 or 1x4 for back rest?
Awesome build, I'm going to build it myself. I have a question though, at 3:26 you said to cut 2 2by4 pieces at 20" but they are extra as far as I can tell. Just to double check the material list: 4 2x4x6' & 1 2x6x6' correct? Or are they 8'? I only counted 2 2x4 boards in your initial cuts. So I'm assuming the 10 17" pieces come from the other 2 2x4s. Is that correct?

@@jerryhubbard4461 Feedback is always helpful. I've been working on editing so that things feel a lot smoother, the more I'm in front of the camera, the better things will get.
Flat seat and flat back make for a VERY uncomfortable seating. Try putting a slight curve to the back and seat. Will be 1000 % better.
Designed so a 20x20 cushion fits them, and they are perfectly comfortable without them.
Thanks!
