Awesome build brother! Love the new twist! And now that the price of 2x lumber has came down... you can actually make one of those for a little over $3 in material! Margins don't lie... follow the profit margins and they will lead you to the $$$.

I made about a dozen of these last year. About half were 6', the rest 8'.
Priced them at $40 and $60
I only started to move them when I made a deal with a local plant nursery with a retail side to take them on a consignment basis.
I had to drop the 6' price to $30 also.
The big box store has them for a little less but theirs are only stapled together much like their fence panels.
I did get some orders for custom sizes and shapes from it, though.
Basically, just a lattice with more substantial edges.

I started building Matt's version last year. I did alter it though, as I too use a longer center board and I use the short cut off to add a forth cross board down at the bottom for added strength. I also don't use the 2 bolts to hold it together. I glue the board ends together and put 2- 3" screws in from each side. This way there is nothing sticking out on the sides. I also put a coating of glue on the bottom board ends to help prevent water from sucking up into the grain and slow rot. As far as selling them, I put them in my flea market stand, but there is no way I could get $60-$100 each for them.

Just a couple of suggestions from a design guy. The proportions are a little heavy. The cross members look better when curved in an arc. I made some for the wife that had sewer pipe sliced off and used as spacers/cross members. The circles you see are pleasant and let yours stand apart from other people’s. Normally those are shipped flat and the customer fans them out . Other possibilities are using bamboo, wattle (willow branches) with woven cross sections. 👍

Hey, Great safety advice on the use of a push block on the table saw. I would love to see you use full safety shield glasses too. The open blade, I get it, guards and shield around the blade are a "pain" and are problematic in themselves with regard to controling the wood product on the far side of the cut.
I love this trellis project. For my part, im not sure I would be selling them. I would merely make some for our garden; and perhaps some for family and friends too. Thanks for the video, a great show overall.

6ft trellis around Tampa from Lowe's or Home Depot average $20-25 each, with cypress/cedar a bit more. BTW, It might be easier for some to use 2x4 PT SYP (which are already 1.5x3.5) ripped into .5" width, for about $3-$4, which is about the same price as 2 PT pickets.
It might also be nice to chamfer the bottom of the trellis a little to make it easier to drive into the ground

To keep the cost just about the same, I'd add a small metal cap where you put the bolts and weld on a piece of scrap re-bar, off cuts from a build site, to fashion a stake that could be forced into the ground just about anywhere the gardener wanted the trelis to stand.

Well...I can definitely say I like your version better than that Peech guy's version and I can actually HEAR YOU (that's a shot at Peech cause his sound volume is trash).
Now, to the nuts n bolts on the profit issue on both of yalls videos.
Obviously, selling on Etsy isn't going to happen. The shipping costs for such a large item kills your profit unless you ship it in loose form and customers have to assemble, of which just leads to problems.
FB Marketplace, well, that's touch and go depending on your area and is relatively exclusive to just your area/neighborhood. Shipping is still not a feasible option, so it's either they come and pick it up or you meet at a location or you deliver it.
It being such a large item, will someone without a truck and/or trailer be able to deliver it? Not likely. So that leaves the customer having to come pick it up at your location. Alot of people don't want "strangers" coming to their home.
So, now we are left with selling to local Garden Centers n such. Which, again, brings up the transport issue, but now, to make a decent profit, you have to figure out a way to transport 10+ of these things. What ya gonna do, strap them to the roof?
Now, with all of that said and done. There's the Big Box store competition.
I happened to be at the Orange one the other day looking at landscape bricks and I saw their section of trellis'
They have pretty much the same size trellis for around $25 bucks. Maybe it was $35. Nonetheless, that's relatively half to a third the cost of your $60 - $80 for the same thing, basically.
Though there is still a profit "IF" you can find a buyer and sell at $30....It's no where near this profit margin you and Peech are talking about and you still have the transportation issue to deal with.
So...To summarize...Unless you live in a very Rural area, own a Truck and don't mind playing the game of traveling, meeting, waiting and/or visiting garden centers and HOPE they buy your items (not likely unless you can actually speak to the owner whom is almost NEVER there)....The actual reality of you being able to sell a number of these Trellis' is very slim and actually not even worth the time to build.
THAT is why this is a FAIL project for turning a profit.
Self, Friends and Family, sure. It's a good build.
Selling 15 to 20 of these or more????
Nope, ain't gonna happen with the exception of maybe 10% of the people who view this video. The other 90% would have a much better outcome selling a pinecone attached to a stick.

      @cedarriverwoodworking  3 місяці тому +3

I really appreciate the input and taking the time to write out such a long explanation. I have transported them in my truck and my car before. I absolutely understand not wanting strangers to come to your home/shop.
These can be used as a bundle unit and an up-sale opportunity. There are always other things you can sell, It's all part of business where you need to find what sells in your particular area.
      Thank you for your support.

    • @Mike-ou5ps
      @Mike-ou5ps 3 місяці тому

@cedarriverwoodworking I appreciate your feed back. Something the Peech guy rarely does....
So, what about the "Selling to Garden Centers" issue I brought up???? You didn't didn't talk about that.
I speak from experience. I live in a Semi'Rural area. I have Garden Centers all over the place...side of the road etc etc etc. What I mean is, they aren't full blown 50 stores+ Garden centers.
You can't just walk in and talk to an "Employee" and say, give me $60 for each Trellis and then they order 20.
      It doesn't work that way.
So, both You and Peech are holding back on the "Reality" of the Business side of what you are preaching in your videos.
This 1000% profit is a bunch of BS.
You or Peech didn't say ANYTHING about this matter of speaking with the OWNER of said Garden center. And the fact that THAT owner is NEVER onsite as well as the employees will NOT give you his/her contact information.
They'll say...Well, give me your business card and I'll give it to the owner. As soon as you walk away, they throw it in the trash.
That "Owner" may not even live in the same city or state.
Sooo...being able to sell to "Local" Garden Centers is really just a LIE. I live in the Houston area. It's a BIG city. I've gone to Rural areas. NOT ONCE have I been able to personally speak to the owners.
Sooo...Though your explanation and demonstration of how to build a Trellis is sound.
The selling to Garden Centers....Seriously Man, I question your statements there and would like to see proof of your engagements with these Owners. Otherwise, what you are saying about selling to them is just BS.
