If this was a bigger dog they were talking about this would be a whole different story, you shouldn’t let small dogs get away with things you wouldn’t let a large dog do just because they’re small. It’s a bad behavior all around no matter the size.
Your right about that BUT a bigger dog who was that aggressive to the point of biting and attacking would cause a death. They still are very irresponsible for getting another dog instead of training and dealing with Sydney.
シluhbaby If it was two small dogs(or a cat, or any small animal) one would surely end up dead as well. It’s also not fair to have two different sets of rules for dogs, if one gets away with more than the other, it’s very possible those bad behaviors will rub off on the “well behaved dog”.

Exactly dogs should be treated the same no matter the size. Behaviors shouldn't be excuse no matter the size
Any dog owner should think about it that way. That's why my dogs used to have shock collars on. But we'd only beep or vibrate them. Never used the shock unless we really really had to. But we don't use them anymore. We have a chihuahua and a live stock guardian. We retired the shock collar in 2017 even though we rarely use it. It was pointless to have when we only had 3 dogs. Now we have 2. And they get along pretty well.
They got soooo lucky with Sam. That is such a good sweet boy.
He looks like the perfect dog. He's introduced to the agility equipment and he's just like 'Ooh, what's this? Sure, I'll have a go!'

I mean, I can see why they adopted Sam on a whim. He is such a good boy. Look at him just lying down, doing what he's told, and just being an overall saint. He's a one in a million find at a shelter. They got so lucky.

That’s a misconception! There are many many many amazing dogs at shelters. The biggest reason they end in there is because of circumstances. Moving, new baby, job loss, but death is also extremely common. Many dogs in shelters had their owners pass away

Why can't it both the breed characteristics and how well you train the dog? There are some terrible trainers and some aggressive dog breeds, but I can assure you this Labrador wasn't trained by this couple is calm/relaxed.
@@BennyNegroFromQueens it's not so much about breed as it is about temperament and past experiences. My family had a labradoodle puppy that had been attacked by another dog as a younger puppy. After that, the dog would chase and attack anything that moved except me. The dog had no "pit bull" in it and was supposed to be trained as a service dog. We ended up having to give him up because the behaviour was endangering my little brother. He was adopted by a vet and got a better home. Even with the Labrador in him, he would've bitten Sydney back

Adopting Sam was a poor decision on their part, but I’m really glad they committed to making a better environment for both their dogs!

I’m surprised that the rescue organization (or even shelter) let them adopt without making that introductions with both dogs. That’s what they do around my area. If you have another dog in the house an introduction between the dogs has to be made before the adoption is complete. 🤷♀️
They technically didnt save the labrador if he is being harassed and attacked all day. He is trapped in a high stress, violent, situation that is worse than shelter life.

I have a lot of respect for someone who can admit they made a mistake, take that on board without complaint, internalize it, and then _fix it._ That takes courage. BaconQueen That’s why you should always get a baby puppy, not always the way these 2 were but safer that way,,,,, i would go to shelters but either they sale the babies to a rescue immediately or they do not want to release the puppy till they are spayed, which might be a half grown dog or fully grown....that is the problem with shelters and they wonder why not so many adopt!!! If you have elderly little dogs like me and you want a big breed then you need an 8 week old puppy or no older than 11 weeks,,,, some breeders will tell you that is the window that a dog syncs with the household and there will be no problems,,,,I waited till a friend gave me one,
BaconQueen My male dog used to snap at other dogs and was never comfortable around them. We rescued a female dog from the streets and was fostering her for few days and my dog continued to be aggressive towards her so we had to keep them seperate rooms and decided to put her up for adoption. But with right interactions at a very slow pace my dog started getting along with her and now they are inseperable and wants to be around eachother all the time. So not all dogs that are aggressive with other dogs end up being aggressive to the dog you decide to adopt. You just need to be patient and have slow interactions.
Beverly Balius Adopting an older dog is a great way to reduce the number of strays on the street and the number of dogs killed everyday. You don’t always have to get a puppy, older dogs aren’t inherently aggressive just because they’re old.
Sometimes it works, as long as you get a docile one. I had a very energetic, slightly animal and food aggressive cat. She hated our docile one that I did trial adoption with, but we started slow. Really, what worked the most for them was when we just let them free. We brought them in the same room and just sat within distance to grab them easily. At first, she was hissing and clawing, but now they’re best friends. 🤷🏼♀️ I don’t think it would’ve worked if we’d gotten a cat like her though. Getting a much calmer cat was definitely a better decision, because it helped with her fear, which was causing her aggression.
This was a silly decision to adopt another dog when they already had a aggressive dog the owners had no control

that's basically how we ended up with our best dog ever, wolfgang. but we didn't have a dog before him, so he was an only child. and it was reckless, but we rolled with the punches and were privileged enough to afford everything he needed when he needed it. we were lucky. but i definitely understand both sides of the argument. sometimes a calculated risk is worth it, but it's still a risk

Dogs not from the shelter are not allowed in the adopt room, yes for disease, and because all the other dogs freak out. It's hard to keep things calm when everyone is riled up.
And it's better to introduce dogs in a neutral space imo.
Must not have been a good shelter then. They usually do a home visit or introduce pets in an outside place to make sure they aren’t aggressive
These have to be some of the best owners I've seen on the show. They didn't complain or make excuses. They admitted they made a mistake and they were actively working to make sure the dogs can live together in peace. Good for them.
It's good that they were working on the situation, but rehoming Sam would have been better, for his own sake.

They needed first though to be told straight that they had made mistakes and what she expected of them to put that right, and in fairness they accepted her criticism well. It wasn't about "crying over spilt milk".

@@pluslinfini4135 actually wagging a tail is both. My dogs wag their tails while I'm petting them really gently and calmly. They just wag their tails cause their happy, even if it's little bob tails since their tails were cut off when little, due to their breed being prone to fragil tails and if they broke their tail it would've caused future problems and possibly even lead to a death so yeah- but their little bob tails wag and wag no matter what. So it's any positive emotion. But, another thing, wagging tails can also be a sign their stressed too, that's also a sign of stress, so other body language needs to be taken into account as well.
That's exactly why I prefer having a big dog. Yes, they are much more work, but at the end of the day I want a calm giant to cuddle with, not a little barking demon.
My smaller dog Merlin was a sook with a huge heart & soul and wouldn’t hurt a fly even after acquiring a new dog and cat he was patient with them. Even Molly, my female small dog of the same breed (Maltese/Shitzu) is very tolerant, friendly and patient.
@@pluslinfini4135 Yes. Wagging a tail means they're excited. When dogs are fighting, they're wagging their tails a lot too. But the difference is, their ears are forward when angry and they're staring. The ears are back when relaxed and friendly. Also, a high tail can show dominace or security, while a low tail insecurity or calm.

I was shocked to learn a while back, labs made #1 in dog bites. This was a few years back. My daughters paternal Grandparents have a lab named Shelby. She is very sweet and extremely smart but kills everything that crosses the yard. Shes quite the hunter!
@@janelle009 It is due to them being so gentle that people often pushes their boundaries. Especially kids and parents allow this. When the dog then react they are so big and strong it becomes a bite.
there is nothing wrong with the dogs, its usually their humans lack of knowledge and inhability to read and help their dogs. It very sad! even thoe their humans have the best intentions often get it wrong.
Everyone here is so lucky that Sam is so calm. A lot of dogs would have very quickly fought back and possibly killed the smaller dog.
Don't underestimate little terriers they like fighting with bigger dogs because they have little dog syndrome

It's Me or the Dog how would I call you if I needed help? I’m just wondering because I might get a dog and I’m only 11 so I don’t know I might need help
Sam is literally being to nice. My border collie is an amazing and well behaved dog, but when she plays with puppies or dogs smaller then her and they get snappy, she shoves them over, stands over them and growls, and then waits. She's teaching them boundaries in the way dogs understand. If the dog gets the message and relaxes, she backs off and starts to play again. If they don't and try and snap, she'll snap back, and wait, etc.
Not sure that would help in this situation though. There's a huge difference between puppies getting a little too rough/overbearing and an attack genuinely meant to maim. Sam is bigger than her but the difference isn't so big that he could effortlessly overpower her. It would still end up as a brutal dogfight which cannot be compared to a little disciplining or boundary enforcing. At least this way the owners can stop Sydney without fearing for their own safety too much.
Oh yeah, Sam shows very good “doggy etiquette”.

This couple are so open and determined to the dog training compared to others I've seen in this series. I'm proud of them for working through it without posing a problem.

ALS ALS I think it’s a little nuts to have to sit and click/treat on leash all day, or until the dogs are put away/separated. I do balanced dog training though, I don’t just stick to 1 thing so this just seems whack.

I see many commenting here the owners are "morons", they knew they had an "aggressive" dog and they adopted another one. I think the commenters haven't paid attention. The owners had Sydney since she was a puppy. They adopted Sam (most likely their decision saved his life) and they brought him home wheee they had to face a really normal reaction from Sydney - her territory was "trespassed" by Sam. For Sydney Sam was an intruder. So the owners called Victoria to help them fix the problem. I don't know many people who would try so hard to keep the new adopted family member (Sam) and also keep the other family member (Sydney) happy. Most people would easily "fix" the problem by getting rid of the new adoptee (Sam), which would break the trust and good nature of any dog. Sam might have ended up in a shelter, not being guilty of anything and being wrongly assumed to have behavioral problems - as many commenters claimed. So, my own opinion on this is: the owners are a lovely responsible couple who weren't ashamed or afraid to ask for help for keeping their two lovely dogs happy and to keep their family unbroken. They were committed to both their life long doggie - Sydney, as well as to the new great family addition - Sam. I wish to their entire family health, love, peace and happiness.

They really are substantially better that most of the owners on this show. Did they do all the right things no. They made some errors that are generally common knowledge but as you stated they asked for help. More importantly they didn’t pick a fight with Victoria or each other they were 100% committed to their dogs and I really don’t see what more you could ask for. Their home seemed far more pleasant than most of the families on this show.
@@Yournotawhat I second all of that. Sam has gotten very good parents, the small dog is 12 years and likely will calm down in the coming years. And they learned to be better trainers for any dog in their future life. - I thought Victoria was a bit harsh on them. But maybe that is all arranged and she wanted to drive the point home for the AUDIENCE.
Either way the couple stepped up their game and responded positively to the training that was offered to them.
As opposed to the usual set of people Victoria has to deal with. That see the dog as extension of their ego.
Sydney had a history of attacking other dogs and going for their throat, so much so, they couldn’t walk her anywhere with dogs. To bring another dog in such a household is actually very irresponsible.
I think the owners were naive, and it was the shelter's responsibility to inform them and do a home check. Tell them to make the dogs meet BEFORE letting them adopt it. Maybe the owners didn't know, but the shelter should have known. If they gave a dog to a couple with an aggressive dog who tried to attack it everyday, they did not do a good job on selecting the adopters. People will try to take dogs from shelters and use them in dogfights or just chain them outside their house neglecting them just so they'll guard the property.... This only happens if the shelter's do not do a thorough check on the owners, including home check AKA going to their home to check out what the living conditions of the dog would be.
I'm so grateful for sam cause he didn't seem to develop any sort of psychological problem and that's a relief for the family and for Victoria I believe. Wonderfully done!

Viggovits G Being attacked can absolutely be how dogs develop psychological problems. All it can take is ONE aggressive incident and it can change a dogs perception of other dogs for life, these owners are just EXTREMELY lucky their lab is easy going happy go lucky.
Viggovits G dogs actually can get psychological problems because of stuff like this. Dogs that get abused can get anxiety and ptsd so it wouldn’t be impossible for Sam to get psychological problems.

@@Constant724 If you saw one of the episodes ( I forgot who exactly, Red and Jasper? ) Red was attacked, if I'm remembering correctly, by another dog(s) and from those experiences, he perceived dogs as the enemy and will go ballistic as Cindy does if he sees another dog. So yeah, dogs can get PTSD from traumatic incidents just like people can. If it was a puppy during its sensitive period and that happened, that dog would be utterly terrified of other dogs, doesn't matter if it's a well behaved dog that it's seeing.
This is why I think it’s important to introduce dogs before adopting them and see if they get along. I’m glad my shelter encourages that and allows adopters to “reserve” dog for a few days and bring back pets for an introduction so people can make that decision before signing the paperwork

We wanted to have a completely different dog but my first dog hasn’t gotten along with the dog we wanted and we tried it with a different dog and they played the second they met
Charllee Dodson Whil I 100% agree it still doesn’t always work unfortunately. We adopted as a friend for our current dog, and at first they got along amazingly. Well when we brought them home after introducing them they absolutely despised each other, even a trainer couldn’t help. We eventually decided it would be best to rehome her without other dogs and now she’s in a lovely family and my dog has a new best friend.
While I do agree that dogs need to meet each other first, it doesn't actually mean anything. Dogs can get along at first en tenth meeting and once you bring them home and your actual dog understands that the other one is there to stay, things can still get out of hand. And that's the part shelters don't talk about, they tell you if they get along here, it'll be OK. Not always.

We had the same problem when i was a kid, we adopted a wondering puppy, the other 4 small dogs bullied her constantly, but that small puppy grow into a 110 pound Doberman german Shepard mix,
and the other 4 only had to suffer her fury just once, they never bothered her again lol
I was about to separated them but my dad stopped me and said " let them set their disputes for once and for all "
She never bullied them after that, but she definitely made her message very loud and clear lol

My brother has a chihuahua and when brought that dog over her would go after my dog (a medium mixed breed) and it used to make me so pissed the way he would charge at her snarling. He was like Sydney where he couldn’t even be near her without showing teeth and growling. But my dog just chilled and at one point she found his attacking fun? He’s old so she could easily outrun him so she’d run off into the bushes when he’d try to attack and then he’d back out and so she’d poke her head out of the bushes and move towards him, he’d charge, rinse and repeat. Weirdly enough once she started enjoying the chasing he stopped enjoying it. He just ignores her now
Point being my dog could’ve easily taken that little chihuahua out but she just wanted to play. We got another dog a little while ago (another mixed breed, definitely has some lab) and she’s very sweet too but when my brothers dog tried to charge/attack her she wasn’t having it and reacted. Luckily there were no serious injuries, I think she just snapped back, but damn did that scare my brother. I should feel more sorry than I do, but honestly that little bugger deserved it. Now he doesn’t come over to the house anymore and I don’t see that as a loss. Tbh he’s so old and missing enough teeth he’s really more of a danger to himself because he’s constantly trying to start fights with dogs way bigger than him

This couple is incredible, good on them for never fighting back, listening to the training and staying strong with it.
I've seen a number of comments echoing what Victoria said, about how they should have introduced the dogs BEFORE adopting Sam, but they might not have been aware that was even an option. I've adopted a number of cats though the years from several different shelters, and it was never mentioned to me as an option. I didn't even know that people could do a pre-adoption into until I saw this episode. All I'm saying is that before judging this couple so harshly, we should stop to consider the fact that the shelter might not have even said anything to them about introducing their dogs. 🐕
Last time I went to visit a dog for possible adoption I asked if they test the dogs to see if they're cat aggressive. They don't here, but some places do. I asked if they could, and they said they didn't know. That ended the process for me, as I have 2 cats.
Here in the UK if you want to adopt a dog and you already have one, they have to meet with shelter staff present as part of the home suitability checks they do. No meet = no adoption. It's just irresponsible to send a dog off to live god knows where with god knows who. The shelter they got Sam from really needs to reevaluate their policies before a dog gets seriously hurt (they may have already as i know this was about 10 years ago when it was filmed)
Yeah when Victoria said that I was like "what?" And felt just how the owners felt. Embarrassed by my ignorance. I barely remember hearing Cesar Milan saying something about give a dog some exercise before getting them to meet a new dog just so that they have less energy to be tense or something
My local shelter doesn't allow it because the shelter is a naturally triggering space for dogs so neither dogs would be in their best mood to meet.
The adopted dog is such a good boy. I’m happy that he has a home where he can be a good boy forever. I’m glad the owners tried their hardest to fix the problem they created.
Oh no, poor Sam. This was the same thing that happened when I got my Samoyed dog. But now he and my other dog are best friends. Glad Sidney is getting help to get along with Sam

I love how great the dog parents were so dedicated to the task, they were right on top of things giving their 100% so they could keep Sam with them. Especially compared to the other dog parents we've seen on this show

It helps to have such a gentle, even-tempered dog to train the aggressive dog with. Many years ago, my greyhound (new at the time) helped my Mom train the family schnauzer to not freak out at the sight of other dogs. The little schnauzer is many years gone now, but my greyhound hasn't forgotten her. He cries and whines whenever he sees a little fuzzy gray dog. I truly think he knew how frightened she was and wanted to help her.
Poor Sam, Sam knows he’s bigger than Sydney and can very much attack Sydney with out a issue but Sam chooses not to, Sam is a good boi.

Well they have their heart in the right place AND rose to the occasion. I am surprised that people are so critical, when you could see them working on it. Took the lecture of Victoria humbly and got help immediately. They could have brought the dog back in the first days. Instead they installed the gate, made the effort to keep the dogs apart and called for help.
Everyone can make mistakes, but the question is what you do after that.
I would like to see an update on the two dogs.
Despite the intentions, everyone involved in Sam's adoption failed him, from Sydney's owner and the facility workers handling their case. Thank God they're both alright.

@@3m3c7 At the time of this video, Sidney was 12 years old. The owner had her since she was a puppy. Sam is young and newly adopted into the family- as great as he is, if a choice had to be made to rehome one, Sam would be the wise choice. He would be easier to adopt due to his young age and wonderful temperament.
You can tell Sydney's starting to look at Sam on purpose to get treats (10:30). What a smart dog. XD
I’m always amazed at how large dogs can be gentle and small dogs can be aggressive. It’s almost as if neither dog recongizes her/his size in relatons to other dogs.

Didnt slow intro to our existing dog same size difference as sam and Sydney. The problem is that they didnt know what to do other then separate them. Yanking sydney's leash would just pump her up more. Dylan (my golden) still has bad days, usually when storm is coming and his joints hurt. Making him kinda cranky. Just gotta pay extra attention to his body language. No dog is naturally nasty usually just scared/anxious. 20$says their initial meeting was both on leash little one lunged and they yanked her ended attempts there. When I got my boy he wasnt dog aggressive he was animal aggressive. Cats dogs rodents. Now he loves our 4 cats 3 guinea pigs and our bunny Loki is his best friend. Problem was that Sydney ran that house. Victoria simply reminded them they are in charge so make sure snappy mcbitebite knows it and looks to you for what to do next.

It’s humans who then start petting the dog and “praising” them for doing that. Most humans do it without realising then eventually get mad at the dog and the dog is left confused as hell.

However, the female was "blindsided" by the adoption (it was her home as the only dog, improper intro, etc.). And, like people, not all individuals get along.

Victoria's right, you should always introduce your pets together before taking another one home because you can NEVER gurantee that they'll just be calm with eachother. This is what my cousins did with there cats, and they adopted the other one! Its not worth the risk just automatically taking another pet home, it could just make the pets lives worse!

I really like these owners! They admit that what they did was wrong, then did what they needed to do to help their dogs!

It irks me that the whole story isn't mentioned. I've seen another video of these two dogs and the poor lab was being left outside all day with no shelter. They were told to get a kennel and bought a children's roofed sandpit (which was a fab choice). I just really hope the lab isn't still being left outside all day, every day.
This is an incredible change from how the JR behaved initially though. It was lovely to see both dogs sat a few feet from eachother but focused on their owners 😊

This was my first time hearing Victoria with that cutesy little anime girl voice so I wasn't sure who I was hearing. I had to scout out the comments to see if it was the lady dog owner or Victoria herself. My heart melted over such a cute & small voice.
Sam is such an amazing dog! Look how happy he is to be in the living room getting pets! But unfortunately you don't see what happens when the owners stop giving Sydney a ridiculous amount of treats that seems to be the only thing she is interested in. I hope It went well for those two in the long run both people and dogs.
Chocolate labs are the nicest dogs ever. All they want to do is play with other dogs. Mine always gets ankle biters coming at us on walks, and I know he would never get vicious back. His size helps establish dominance a bit, but he is always a good, good boy.
They just bought a dog on a whim, and put it in with their dog aggressive dog! That's like buying a goldfish and putting it in a tank with your pet piranha and expecting it to live!

Sam wasn't bought. Sam was adopted. Sydney isn't an aggressive dog. The owners had her since she was a puppy. Please listen and watch. All dogs are like this in the beginning. You, the owner, have to be ready for anything. They probably got Sam b/c he was going to be put down. Sydney has never had another dog in the house since they got her. Please listen and watch the whole thing.
@@mac_gold sydney was clearly being aggressive towards sam. The couple should not have adopted sam without letting the dogs meet first and seeing how they interacted. The shelter should have never let them take the dog without doing a home check and insisting the dogs meet.

We had two, the one that had been properly socialized loved living with other dogs. His poorly socialized brother (my sister's dog) was extremely aggressive towards not only dogs but most people as well.
This one is very interesting. My Mum has an English Jack Russell and he's very protective but not aggressive. Next door they have an American Bullmastiff, which they adopted and is as soft as a brush. Thankfully, the two are best friends. The play like family. It's lovely to see this with a Jack Russell. They have no idea about size.

@@fatimaha457 During the training period if there's no treats the dogs would be separated. The owners would be instructed to gradually extend the training sessions together and taper off the treats. By the time the training period is over, the positive association between the other dog and food and attention will have overridden the bad memories, and the new dog will be considered a familiar presence and not a threatening intruder to the older dog's territory.
I had to suddenly take in my dad's big dog for a few weeks due to a family member dying, and wow was it tense. Our 10 year old yorkie went straight for the rottie/lab's throat. I was in the middle of putting her diaper on when she started growling at the big dog, and I was genuinely scared I was going to be in the middle of a dog fight because the big dog actually got angry for once. I couldn't imagine ADOPTING another dog without letting them meet each other.
