I'm a dog trainer and I wish people realized just how dangerous it is when they don't disclose this kind of information. If we don't know, you are putting our safety at risk. If your dog displays any sort of aggressive behavior. ALWAYS consult with a professional immediately! Don't wait until behaviors are totally out of control. It makes our job so much harder and someone could get hurt.

How true Jasmine. Unfortunately, many owners are not familiar with the early signs of aggression. By the time I am called in to work with a dog, I know I am the last line of defense for the owners to be able to keep their pet. Thus, I know the dog bites. I also know the dog has bitten a child at some point. When I ask if the dog bites, they always say no. This lie of omission is because they are embarrassed to state the truth. I wait until the third visit working with them to ask the question again. By then they have seen a vast improvement in the behavior of their dog and are more trusting of me to answer the question truthfully. It's then that the bite stories come flooding out of them. It isn't until the dog bites a child, that they realize it's time to call for help.
Really to few know the worth of discipline.
Yeah. He was so out of control, and I think that's why she initially forgot. I believe her here. There's so much else to focus on that's happening way more often
@@AtPrEd It’s not necessarily “discipline” it comes down to people not naturally knowing or being trained in how to identify and redirect behaviors. Unfortunately it’s very common for people to wait until it’s totally out of control to seek help from a professional. I love what I do. I get to make a difference and help people keep their dogs. But it’s certainly a high stress level career to have. And it’s important for clients to be truthful and disclose everything. I think sometimes people are embarrassed. But I’m not your neighbor. I’m not your judgy family member or friend. I’m here to help make sure your dog doesn’t injure someone or another dog.

There is no excuse for not telling Victoria about that dog being aggressive about his bone.
Like you've never once forgotten anything in your life. Tell me exactly what you ate 2 months ago to this day. When things are so chaotic, you're bound to forget something until that memory is triggered. Not to mention that the only other experience with it is the dog nipping at one of the family, which means the behavior was much less than what we saw with Victoria (a stranger).
Eventide difference is they knew she was coming so they’d need to clarify the extent of the dogs violence aka how much risk the trainer is at when near the dog. What someone ate is almost always much less important than if your dog has a history of possessiveness and violence especially when you have contacted a dog trainer to come, they should have made sure to tell her everything.
@@cahan557 You knew I asked what the person ate 2 months ago. Apply this to you, you know I asked you now, so now tell me exactly what you ate 2 months ago to this day. I'll wait. The point isn't how important it is. The point is that you forget literally ANYTHING in your life. They wouldn't think anything of it at the time, so it's not important to remember. Doesn't mean suddenly if it's important in the future they remember it all. I could change the question to "Tell me everything you've ever learned in school", ALL of what you learned is important to some degree, so please do tell me every tiny detail.
Eventide i doubt victoria just showed up with no warning on that day, she likely organised this months in advance so in response, if 2 months ago you told me you would ask me a certain question, id have 2 months to get all the details and answer. Also something as mundane as what you ate is easy to forget as most people do it three times a day, id hope their dog doesnt attack people 3 times a day but more of a rare occurrence.
@@cahan557 people often automatically downplay & minimise problems because its easier than addressing it. Which is precisely why they then escalate to this kind of situation.
I love how this channel doesn’t prove that dogs misbehave because their animals, it mainly shows how the owners need trained to have a dog.
also tho i hate how the grandma treats the dog like he's a bad person? calls him a beast, says hes 'rude and ill-mannered', as if he's intentionally malicious, not just badly trained.
Honestly it’s not the dog that needs training it’s the human. I very quickly learned that with my pittie. I couldn’t figure out why she wouldn’t listen or respect my space. And I watched a few training videos and realized I wasn’t doing her training right. Now I have dog that has manners because I showed her what I wanted how I want it when I want it. She’s a different dog because I’m a different human. It’s the human not the dog. We have expectations that are way too high before we show them and teach them. If the dog is not doing it then its because the humans not doing it right.

From the sounds of it, it happened to one of the family members before so it was likely much less of a reaction then. Also, are you seriously going to sit here and act like you have NEVER forgotten something in your life until it was too late or brought up? Stop acting like you're so superior. With the dog as chaotic as it was, she just forgot to mention he can be defensive. Victoria wasn't even that mad about it, but here you people show up in the comments like "HOW DARE YOU EVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT! I'VE NEVER DONE THAT! I'M BETTER THAN YOU!"

When will people learn that untrained dogs can be dangerous? If you don't wanna train a dog, then don't get one. These dogs will only end up in shelters or put down, cause many of them are not able to be rehomed! That's such a big problem all around the world!

I couldn't agree more, but I don't want people to think that all rescues are difficult to train or automatically badly behaved. There are many sweet dogs that need homes, mine weren't trained but luckily I rescued the sweetest dogs I've ever owned and one is half pit, half terrier, so she's a very hyper one 😅. I wish more people would rescue instead of buying from breeders, but because they're worried about rescues being so dangerous they don't bother to try, of course they need training but people think no amount of training can help, and that's just silly. In a perfect world I would say many people shouldn't have dogs at all because it's a privilege.

I have noticed people don't consider it 'a real bite' unless it ends in stitches at the hospital. As a kid my friend's German Shepherd was trained to guard the yard. One time they let him out of the cage while I was in the yard by mistake. He tackled me and bit my foot. He did not break the skin cuz shoes. But that doesn't mean he didn't bite. They did not see it that way though. They claimed it wasn't a big deal, he didn't really bite me because we didn't need to see a doctor. Same logic was applied when it came to their own kids. One of which was four or five at the time. Owners like that infuriate me.
@@iohiti That's horrible and I'm glad to hear it wasn't a severe bite for you. I knew a family that had a trained guard dog that would ONLY bite on a particular word, they wouldn't tolerate anything else.
This same dog would herd and pick up little kids off the road and let the family's two year old climb on him, however the parents were also right on it when it came to how the kids behaved around their dog too (especially with their own kid), much to an entitled parent's misery but if they complained they'd get a right tearing into from the owners.
The owners told me they considered it fair "our dog doesn't bite the kids, the kids shouldn't bite back".
I'm sad to see that vanish with modern dog owners.

Like she said though, his behavior has been erratic. He's never bitten anyone before, but he has tried to nip at them, she did say that. You wouldn't think to tell Victoria every tiny little detail either. There's things you might not think of until it comes up. But of course you can sit here in the comments acting like you've never done the same thing with anything in life. Like you've never accidentally forgot something until it was too late.
@@Eventide215 But the thing is, a nip is completely different than what Sammy did to Victoria. He lunged at her and snapped his jaws, trying to bite her arm three times. It's highly unlikely that a pet owner would forget when their dog's "nips" turned to full on aggression, even if it was just once. But you are still right, we don't have all the facts.
I work with dogs with varying levels of aggressiveness, sometimes it's just small things that set them off, like touching their paws. I always ask if their dog has a history of being aggressive, they usually always say no. Then two minutes late while I'm introducing myself to their dog, their dog snaps at my hand or their small dog doesn't like being picked up and their owner doesn't tell me until I go to pick up the dog and it starts freaking out. That history of aggressive behavior question is not a set-in-stone decision maker, it's just a way for me to think on how to work with the dog so as not to frighten them and to know their limits. Owners will more often than not swear up and down that their dog is an absolute angel.
@@sydney6107 What he would do to the family is far less than what he'd do to a stranger. The family he'd nip at, strangers he'd bite. They didn't think anything of it since it's never happened to strangers before. Thus why they didn't think to mention anything until it was too late.
Jeez, he really went after her! She didn’t even go near his bone before he attacked. She was just offering a trade and he dropped his bone to attack her for it. He lunged MULTIPLE times, even when she backed off. That dog is scary unpredictable and doesn’t know how to read body language or respect boundaries. That dog needs a lot of help.

That was a shocking and unexpected attack. Good she's so good to immediately turn and move away. Anyone else might have accidentally escalated it. The woman did seem to have geniuinly forgotten and it sounded like it was one of the kids/ i.e. known family member so maybe not nearly as sever as his attack on Victoria. And given the complete chaos of Sammy's life it does seem she could've forgotten. Still my "hackles" went up and I felt intense outrage on Victoria's behalf. Good, they are so lucky to have been able to have Victoria help them. She is nothing short of brilliant and humane with dogs and people!

@@pmarie10 I feel like there is a lot more going on relationship wise between mother and daughter, the mother is constantly referring to the dog negatively. And I feel she is shaming her daughter not just about the dog but about other things. Which I feel is why she downplayed the dogs defensiveness. She is trying to compensate for her mothers negativity so Victoria doesnt get the idea that this dog is just horrible . Also there she doesn't want to feel guilty about not training and spending time with her dog.

maybe she was worried that the report could get sent to animal control or something. i know in most counties dogs have like 2 or 3 strikes of biting someone before its mandatory they are put to sleep.

I'm a dog groomer. Any time an owner tells me their dog may "try to nip" or even makes a point to tell me "she's NEVER 'bitten' before" I know 100% that dog has an attitude problem and is fully comfortable using their teeth to express their opinions. And nearly every time, that dog tries to BITE. Not "nip". It is SO SO SO important for dog owners to not put on blinders and downplay their dogs behavior. It is MY safety at risk, so I don't care if your feelings get hurt in having to accept that your dog is a little beast with no structure or boundaries.
When I took my dog to be groomed I gave it to them straight she bites and she barks she simply doesn’t like baths though

It's denial and avoidance. Whenever someone takes an ownership role of something, they feel a consequential connection. Whatever the 'object' of the possession does is seen as an extension. It also happens with 'parents' and children (I put the word 'parents' in quotes there because it's an unfitting word in this instance; parents do not 'own' their offspring anymore than a boss 'owns' an employee).
Note: if you see a parent acting possessive of their children or their child's actions (e.g. 'yes, MY daughter is an amazing singer, and I raised her; are you proud of ME?'), take a skeptical and distanced relation with them. Possession over humans is a sign of narcissistic personality disorder. Never get mixed up with a narc. They will destroy your life if you give them the chance.
Sem Fer omg saaame. im also a groomer and the second an owner tells me, “oh shes never bitten before, but she does get a bit nippy sometimes. she wouldn’t harm a fly” i 100% expect to be on the receiving end of some form of aggression. i wish people understood that giving us misleading information about their dogs behaviour puts both the dog and the groomer at risk
I think you're right that a dog that is described as 'nippy' or 'just grumpy' is more likely to bite a groomer or vet, but I also think its possible these dogs haven't 'bitten' anyone before their groomer or vet. Its rare that someone else will ever be as involved with handling the dog as those two groups, I don't even hug my puppy as close as the vet tech did today and groomers often take even greater liberties. And its hard to prepare the dog, when you dont know the professionals' routines.
People often don't remember or think about each other's boundaries, let alone a dog's boundaries, so its easy to not consider that a seemingly harmless negative reaction under mild stress may escalate severely in the face of major stressors. This can be even worse with rescues where the owner might not even know all of their animals' stressors.

The programme started out in the UK. The premise is that one person has had enough of their partner's (or daughter's, etc) dog, and it's causing problems.
I'm scared of dogs, but Victoria is brilliant and shows how most dogs can be trained, and that sny bad behaviour is usually the owner's fault. I used to feel like I was watching her train the human, instead!

@@zunghsi i assume years of training and learning the same way most professionals are trained. Could be either through schooling or an apprenticeship. Most dog trainers I know have a mix of both.

I'm glad Victoria was ok, and also glad she didn't blame the dog....it was fully the owners fault, it's pretty appalling that the owner had to be told to use a mussel. Also imagine being held captive against your will for hours and hours on end with no stimulation or company shut in one room...if you do that to a dog you end up with a scared aggressive dog just like above. When a dog has attacked someone you can NEVER trust them again and must always use mussel when around other people. If a owner fails to do that with a dog they know is scared and aggressive they shouldn't be allowed to continue owning the dog.
I have applied Victoria's training with my 9-month-old pup and it's a wonder how well she is responding. My heart actually hurt for Sammie being left on that porch "until one of us remembers to bring him in."
No wonder the dog doesn't trust people. His people keep showing him they can't be trusted.
The owner did not look alarmed AT ALL when he tried to bite Victoria. This is why I'm always weary of going to someone's house with a big dog for the first time because you don't really know what type of owner they are.
“Wary” not “weary” yes this dog is severely neglected by this woman - he is locked in a room for 8-10 hours every day with no walks. That’s horrible. And he lunged at and bit her own child yet she acts totally indifferent to all of it. I think she is a spoiled child who resents her own mother, resists the mother’s very sane suggestions, and has never grown up.
Small dogs bite more than big dogs, and they can do damage as well. I still have a scar on my leg from when an owner's Jack Russel bit me over a year ago. Beware of any dog you don't know.

@@fdpcompdm You're correct. The difference is the pit bull would have been taken by animal control and put down, no questions asked. The jack russel's owner just said, and I quote, "oh he's just playing, he didn't mean anything by it". She just kept coming up with excuses for her rat being off leash, and I was the fourth person to be bitten that day, and one of the bite victims was a child in the face.
When he was attacking Victoria, they just stood there as if they weren’t even surprised or caring to help.
I know what you mean but I think that in that case it was better for them not to react or interfere because the situation would have escalated. An owner that has control over his dog can tell him to back off but they don't and the dog could have been even more aggressive towards Victoria.
It’s wayyy better to not “react” in that situation. That would’ve made things so much worse.
They would have been told to stand back in any circumstance. the video was edited to less than 20 mins. She was there for 5 hours. Plus she has two extra handlers always there if needed, and like most professional trainers, she has a safe word she uses if she needs her team to come in.
And she wasn’t pulling the dog enough away from people when they came to the door, for Victoria and her friend who had to ask her to pull the dog away more so she could barely get past.. It’s like she wanted the dog to be up in their faces. Bizarre.
Usually its because they’re frozen because of fear or shock.
Just a while ago i let my dog run at a quiet unfenced yard while i was inside our gate guarding her. Someone appeared then i ran out to get the dog outside.
When i forgot my one dog on the inside of our gate running toward the stranger to bite. Good thing i ran to her and stopped her. Though half of me frozen in fear i still chose to be brave and hold her.

Sadly, 99% of people have the worst and most ignorant assumptions about dogs and never follow through with anything even if they decide on anything at all. They just want a dog to sit there and look cute or tough. Then when the dog is troublesome, they punish the dog when its the owner's fault. They don't see what they're doing or understand a dog's needs.

The pause was her thinking of how to avoid giving Victoria a straight answer to her question.
Older woman plain hates him, younger woman is too passive (notice how she's petting him (which is reward and reinforcement) as he's acting territorial towards the person at the door)). Dog isn't getting what he needs from either of them. Older woman knows he needs to know about boundaries, but doesn't know how to teach him other than yelling at him. Younger woman isn't trying to teach him in the first place.
she may have been trying to calm it down. People have to understand that animals are not humans. You cannot apply all of the same things on animals as you would on people. A pat on the back or a hug might help a human calm down, but for another animal, that could be interpreted as a form of aggression, or perhaps a positive reinforcement that leads the animal to believe its behavior at the moment is acceptable. However, the principles of the psychology of learning (positive/negative reinforcement for example) does work across the board (you'll stop going to your job eventually if they stop paying you, right?) but, different things work for different organisms. People also have to remember that animals are not capable of the same complex cognition that we are. Some of the great apes and ceteceans have some of that higher thought process, dogs and cats have it to a limited degree, but, overall, they are not capable of "thinking" about their behavior like we can. That's another erroneous assumption that leads to the kind of bad behavior we see in this dog.

Because they either don't understand dog behavior and how to modify it, or they're the kind of person who thinks their dog's desires overrule someone else's right to safety around the dog. The latter are the worst.
I was about 9-10 when a friend's rott broke her chain and bit me. She hadn't actually been aiming at me though (me and my friend weren't near her when she broke the chain). She was aiming at a six-year-old who, I assume, had been annoying her. I got bit when the younger kid ran and jumped behind me. (I was a literal meat-shield.) My friend's dad insisted she wasn't a bad dog, that she'd just gotten upset by all the kids around and that it wasn't even that bad of a bite because the dog was missing teeth. But I still had a small chunk missing out of me and had to take rabies medication until the dog was tested. And the dog still got euthanized.
In my state, any dog that bites someone can be put down by animal control. And generally, when a dog bites a kid, no matter how minor the wound, there's no second chances.
Because people become blind to their dog's bad behaviour, just like they do with their kids. It becomes bad gradually, so they get used to it and think that's just how the dog is, it's normal. As a trainer, I've had people say all kinds of ridiculous things to me when I ask them to tell me about their dog's problems. Things like, "He bites if you go near him when he's eating, but that's fair enough, all dogs do that, don't they?" Instantly making excuses for their spoilt little baby. Well, for the benefit of anyone reading this - NO, it's not normal, it's not acceptable, and all dogs don't do that!!!!! I currently have 8 dogs - different breeds, different sizes, from different backgrounds, some I've had from pups, others were rescued as adults, I have males and females, some neutered, some not, various ages and temperaments, and let me tell you, it's not just luck that none of my dogs are aggressive. I love them all but they're allowed to be what they are - dogs - and not confused and spoilt by being pushed into a role they don't understand, like being a surrogate child. They're all child friendly, dog friendly, groomer friendly, vet friendly......and it wouldn't even cross my mind that I ought to be wary about being near them when they have food or bones. When you accept responsibility for any animal, it's up to you to make sure they're not a danger to anyone, including yourself.

None of them had any water or citronella spray in hand. If they had gotten involved it could have easily agitated the dog more and they could have gotten hurt. At best they could have clapped their hands to help.
As a trainer you expect to get bit and jumped on, pawed at and mouthed. I'm sure that wasn't the first time Victoria has dealt with that, won't be the last.
Might have made things worse; more voices that are panicked or angry, more people crowding in around his bone. I'm outraged they let her give him a bone without telling her that he gets protective and might lunge.

Problem is that “mom” pouts like a child around grandma and clearly likes that the dog scares grandma. Mom locks the dog outside every day for 8-10 hours and then allows it to run insanely around the house (and bit her own child at least once). She smiles when the dog lunges at Victoria and she doesn’t pull the dog back at all when it’s aggressively lunging at anyone coming in the house.

Nemuri_Nezumi she wasn’t getting to it’s level to pet it or do anything like that. She had to do that for training purposes and the dog was reactive which she didn’t know about. Not her fault in the slightest.

He is very alert and actually looks quite obsessed with the food and bone. I didn't know he was gonna bite like that but I could see that nothing in the world could make him trade that bone and even might show teeth and snap at her.

A proper fitting muzzle should be large enough so the dog can open it’s mouth to a FULL PANT. A full on, tongue out like the dogs been running for 30mins.
Failure to have a muzzle properly fitted for a full pant can result in overheating, choking, suffocation, and death.
There are different muzzles for different reasons, often there are dogs that are not aggressive that wear a muzzle for a variety of other reasons.

If I have to get to work at 8, I’m up at 5am to run the dog NO MATTER WHAT. If I get back home at 7 or 8 pm exhausted, guess what? I WALK THE DOG. even when I was working in a restaurant and got home at 11pm or midnight, I still walked the dog. There is simply no excuse.

Well, there are some dogs hard to train...my dog, i tried everything and he didn't wanted to learn until a stranger person (trainer)trained him cuz he didn't wanted to listen to me...muzzles and everything since he was a pup but without any effect

He would provoke the dog into biting him, overwhelm it into temporarily freezing in fear and then the minute he left the dog would be even worse than before. It's shocking how awful some of his episodes are and how incredibly stressed the dogs look.
I suspect they ended up having to put him down. A bitting dog with children is just bad news and the poor dog cannot stop himself. Jennifer was the most irresponsible owner and parent on the show. If her kid gets hurt again social services could be called in. It is hard to send a child bitting dog to a rescue and a shelter would put him down on day 2 of bitting the staff.

It's also important to keep in mind that there are some dogs who prefer to be outside for long periods of time even when it's cold. I used to get mad when I would see dogs outside all day until I met the father of my younger dog, he hates being inside and we live in a place where there's snow on the ground most of the year and you almost have to force him to come in the house.
My upstairs neighbors do the same. They bought a Jack Russel. They regularly park him outside in our garden, chained to a tree. Even in summer when it was 30+ degrees celsius they left him there. Or in the garage, or in their appartment. He is usually left alone and most definitely not being walked twice a day.
That dog barks at everything that moves. Even at me even though he should know me by know. I noticed that he is scared of me too.
That dog never received enough attention, care and excercise, let alone any training as a pup. Even when they just got him they put him in a cage in the garden for hours while they went on about their lives. (Work and other hobbies)

Agreed. I think that he was territorial about the porch, too, once he had something like a bone or food on the porch. No one else really uses the porch except the dog so I think he considers it totally his turf.

I agree. Though I will say when my dog gets overly excited or anxious, I will put her in her crate for a couple minutes so she can calm down and feel safe again before coming out. It has definitely helped her feel better in herself. It's kind of like a time out, but not as a punishment, more of a 'take a break' sort of thing if that makes sense?

brenna may coleman you are correct. The crate should be their safe haven and not used as a punishment. Being aggressive and being anxious are totally different behaviors. So I understand your comment. However, this dog needs immediate correction for its aggressive behavior.
The moral of the story: it’s never actually the dog’s fault. It’s always the owner’s fault.

I watched a BUNCH of her vidoes when we got our husky puppy as we live in a small flat I wasn't to keen on getting my couch ripped apart after she gets older. It's AMAZING how much regular play and training has resulted in a super chilled out confident dog. She's not destructive. She's good with strangers. Outside of her teething phase she's never destroyed anything. It's amazing how much regular love, attention, and interaction can do! She's my best friend.

That isn't about being trained, that's about his emotional state, he was on edge and had a history of being protective. He was insecure and yes, training does help lessen the anxiety and all that, but it's not entirely about training.
@@mm-zm8ys exactly. You can have a highly-trained dog that has behavioural issues. Training is about teaching a dog a learnt response to a cue. Behaviour is about reacting in a way guided by an underlying emotional state. You don't simply train a dog to not react like you would them to sit or stay. It requires a tailored approach, an understanding of behaviour and an owner that has a flawless ability to read their dog's body language.
It's not even a matter of being trained; it thinks it is the pack leader of the house. The owner babied the dog too much and is too lax with it.

I agree that he deserves a better life and he is in no way a "bad animal", but most of this came from her not knowing, so instead of stamping her as a bad dog owner, it should be an unknowing dog owner, which is tbh just as bad. I cant understand why people get dogs and learn nothing about how to have a dog! My family took in an abandoned pup and I've been watching alot of these videos. Hes in his rebel stage yet he follows the majority of the commands because of the useful tactics shown by Victoria. Thank you Victoria!
This dog will end up biting again. I love how people think small training sessions with Victoria and a camera crew is gonna rid the dog of all behavioral issues. 🙄🙄🙄
I guarantee he bites again and she will dump him at a shelter and he will be euthanized. That is just reality. Mom is totally checked out and just pouts around her own mother.
So they put him in "time outs" meaning they just separated him from his family, forced him outside and left him there for HOURS because they couldn't be bothered to REMEBER that he was even there, didn't teach him the very ground rules every dog should now and didn't walk him regularly meaning that dog had no real exercise or any way to burn that energy off.
And they wondered why he was behaving the way he was? Why do people like this even get a dog?

We accidentally cured the doorbell problem. While at one home, the Ring doorbell and motion sensor at our other home would alert on our devices, causing the dog to bark at the front door, which I’d then open, “see nobody there”. Soon he ignored the Ring motion sensor alert sound.

I have a friend who happens to be a 150 lb. wolf hybrid. He’s polite, friendly and comes by to take my corgi to play in the woods. I got a new Borador pup (border collie/lab) that was a total brat. The pup got in the wolf’s face and growled at him. The wolf quietly rolled the pup on his back and took his huge foot and gently held him down until he quit squirming and shut up. It is NOT the size of the animal.
