You have finally confirmed for me what I have been trying to explain to anyone who has ever cut my hair. I always ask them to please do not use thinning scissors, texturing scissors or use point cutting, as my hair is very fine yet thick. If it is not blunt cut it looks a mess and I like tidy layers. Since covid started I have been cutting my own hair(one year now) and I am getting better hair cuts than I would say 80 percent of the salon cuts I have gotten through out my life, and I am not young, LOL. Do hair dressers find it insulting when you ask them to cut your hair a certain way? I ask nicely but I am telling you I have had some horrid cuts. My hair is so easy to work with, I don't get it.
I'm with you there. I've been bouncing around numerous different hairdressers for about two years now, and although the last one talked a good game at consultation, she went on to use both thinning scissors and a razor, and bizarrely she actually began by 'cutting' the back/ bottom of my hair using a grade 8 clipper (I'm a guy, but I didn't have any kind of fade or short hair at the back, as it generally covers my ears). While she was working I was thinking: 'You're doing all the things that I've just asked you not to.' and 'Shouldn't you be using hairdressing skill to address those bits, not short-cut tools?' You expect it with a barber due to time constraints, but not from a time-served hairdresser. I'm tempted to insist on blunt-cutting next time, obviously not with that particular hairdresser though.
Same here!! I have fine hair with curls, waves and some frizz. I ALWAYS ask them not to use thinning scissors after a complete disaster hair cut. Due to the texture and how my hair dries sooo quickly 9 hairdressers out of ten leave me with wonky hair. I thought I had eventually found a hairdresser that cut my hair well, And I’ve been going to her for about 4 years now, but on the last appointment I wasn’t concentrating on what she was doing as I had a style change and she cut it from the middle of my back to shoulder length. Unfortunately after my first wash at home I knew she’d used thinning scissors. 😫😫😫 it was frizzy, split and a complete mess. This would have been easy to deal with if I’d left it longer as I’d have got it cut, but with it being shoulder length it’s just ruined my hair. I used to cut my hair all the time and looking back at photos what’s when my hair looked it’s best. I think I’m going to have to start that again! I agree that most hairdressers get offended if I ask them politely not to use thinning scissors during the consultation.
I don't know why the person who cuts our hair doesn't do exactly what you ask for, they're getting paid for it not the other way around. I found one who cuts my hair exactly what I ask.

I have been searching for 6 years for someone to blunt cut my hair like my "beautiful hair stylist of 26 years but who died suddenly" did. I have gone through probably 20 hair stylist now since she passed, and have finally given up because it seems they are just not capable of blunt cutting - at all. I recently gave up and have started cutting it myself. It seems this skill is not something taught in the schools, but you explained it magnificently and understand my dilemma. I could kiss you! I don't know where you are in the states, but I would travel there to have you cut my hair! Every single hair stylist I've seen since 2016 nods their head like they understand then proceed to point cut and I go home in tears.
Yes! You understand that point cutting and texture does not blend smoothly. I always go back in and fix every texturized point cut. I tell them to blunt cut but they don't like to listen. Very frustrating. I cut my own hair now and it looks amazing because I know what works for me.
Fantastic explanation and video! i've always noticed that my hair looks more piece-y and not so pleasant when I visit my local salon (point cuts like crazy) vs my local barber (exclusively blunt cuts). This is just my personal experience

Every time I ask a hairdresser for a ‘blunt’ cut, they always end up ‘point’ cutting. It is so frustrating as I have fine hair but lots of it. Why do they not understand?? This is why I have purchased my own scissors and have started doing my own hair. I am not a hairdresser. However, most these days are in such a hurry, they never do the sectioning of the hair and layer it properly. There are so many crappy, passionless hairdressers out there.
Agree 1,000%. I should start a petition to make a law banning point cutting! I'm sick of some stylists trying to push it on you. You're amazing. My daughter has thick wavy hair and is well overdue a cut. No hairdressers taking kids under 10 atm due to covid. Thank you millions. Xx
You would hate what I did this weekend. Got tired of the heat of my long hair, just grabbed it and attacked it with the scissors. My husband about fainted but still wouldn't help with the layers so I'm working on it as I have patience. Fortunately I have very thick fine hair and just enough curl to hide a multitude of sins. I did this once before at the beginning of Covid and had to laugh every time I received a compliment.
Ohhhhh, I wish you’d cut my hair! I have a ton of straight, unforgiving hair. Once it’s styled and then takes a rest....you see every cut, therefore I need a very skilled, perfectionist like yourself. I want to be able to blow it dry, hit it with a round brush then go on my way. A great haircut know where to fall. I have a point cut now and my hair is so confused. Loved your video!
I have naturally curly hair (that is also fine)that I like to wear straight as well, if I get it point cut, my hair goes wispy when curly with bits sticking out and when I blow dry and straighten it with irons, the wispy ends practically sizzle at the ends! I despair as I need blunt lairs ☹️ but Never get them now. No one listens and end up point cutting parts. I'm really frustrated, my hair rarely looks good after a point cut.
Helpful! Thanks. My hair is fine and thin, and I've been trimming it myself. I was thinking of learning point cutting but now I think I will stick with leaving the ends blunt. II do get compliments on my shoulder length hair, it may not be very thick, but it's shiny and healthy :)
I'm not a stylist, I just had my very long hair cut shoulder length. I've had it this length before & it was gorgeous & blended. I love the length but the cut is terrible! I returned today to have more layering done....still not right. 😢 I have a VERY DISTINCT blunt top layer that doesn't blend in with the beautiful wavy almost curly hair underneath, I can't even scrunch it to make it look decent. 😭 I was at the store in the hair products hoping to find something to possibly enhance the top layer when a young woman & I were talking. She said she used to cut hair & what should have been done was a point cut. After watching your video....she was spot on! So thanks to her AND your video I know what has to be done. Awesome video! Two years since your video but I hope you see this comment. ❤
I have very thick curly hair and, when I lived in CA, hairdressers always layered my hair via the point cut method and I loved it. I recently relocated to the east coast and hairdressers have been layering my hair using the blunt cut method which results in too much volume. I tried to describe how I wanted it cut but was not familiar with the terminology, "point cut", which I prefer. I appreciate knowing the correct terminology and your demonstrating the difference.
Sadi T... EXACTLY the problem I JUST had with my new cut yesterday & I'm heartbroken at the results I got, returned today to have layers & couldn't seem to make her understand I CANNOT have a blunt cut. Now I have what I consider a bozo (straight blunt cut top layer) with my waves & curls underneath 😭.
your videos are great, I've learned so much! I even gave my mom a haircut by following one of your tutorials and I have to say, for my first time, it turned out so great! thanks to you!
9:15 This technique is so smart! Last time I cut my hair I accidentally cut a portion of my bangs too short near the top of my head but it actually kinda looked good because it gave the top of my head more volume. I'm gonna try to replicate using that trick next time
Thank you! I found this to be very helpful. I have a hair appointment in two hours and was going to ask for my ends to be point cut. After watching, I realize that point cutting is the opposite of what I want and need. I have fine hair and ends and am always looking for more volume. A blunt cut will be my request; thanks again!
@@TheSalonGuy I'm here tonight because I had my hair cut today and told the stylist not to thin my hair or using texturing techniques, just a blunt cut. I have thin straight hair, but lots of it. She argued with me 3 times insisting on point cutting it. I told her I've always had a blunt cut, other than one time and I hated the point cutting technique, made it look like I have split ends. I had to tell her THREE TIMES not to point cut it. And then she pouted like a baby, tried to give some bogus reasons why she just had to point cut it. Made zero sense what she was saying. Why do they insist on doing this technique? Somehow I've survived my entire life getting blunt cuts, hence frequent compliments on my hair, yet she tried to push the point cutting on my hair three times. I was very polite, asked nicely each time. Ended up in a rotten mood when I left the salon. I should have gotten out of the chair and left after the first time she ignored me. Reply
I like my hair blunt cut, because I feel Al of the dead ends get cut evenly off. Point cutting for my hair type leaves my ends trashy. Thank you for letting me think I'm not crazy. Most stylists today want the forgiving way out
Your skill makes blunt cutting seem easy. I think my last hairdresser point cut because she was less accurate but it was much choppier and even though I have thick wavy hair I ended up with huge steps and holes in my hair. I then blunt cut throughout copying one of your videos on layering hair and it looks much better. It can be difficult to see what you're showing at times when you have a mannequin with dark hair against your black T-shirt.
Thanks for explaining it.. I would like better the blunt technique, since I'm older now and my hair has thinned out a bit.. great video and you explained it perfect!!🥰💞
Thanks for your tips. Just taking notes to cut my own hair. I’m not a stylist - but I always cut my husband’s hair and now due to Covid-19 I am cutting my own.
I'm the opposite here. My hair is very thick. All stylist did blunt cut till my current who now does deep point cut. It's the best my hairs ever looked. And she is the highest end I've ever gone. The piecy look is what works on my face.
I think you did a very good job showing the difference between the point cut and blunt cut. I think it looked best blunt cut then point cut in certain sections.
ty for explaining that.... my hair is very thin as i have gotten older... it used to be thick..... but i prefer the point cut i think because with my thin hair it makes it lighter.. gives it more bounce .. : )
Thanks. Such great info and delivered in a very understandable way. I'm not a professional hair designer, but am interested in how to get the best from my hair and this really helped. You're great!!
I used to do hair, so I understand what you're saying. This is the first time I've seen this site..it won't be the last! 🙂 As to why so many places are doing what you don't want
Hello. I have fine hair and since moving away from my home town (and my stylist) I have not been able to achieve the hair texture that I like with the stylists in my new state. Often I feel stylists over texturize my hair, and it sometimes comes out looking frizzy at the ends, or thin at the ends (especially in the front), or like a series of little shards everywhere. I've been suspecting that I just haven't found the language I need to get the hair texture I want. After watching your video, I feel like I should be asking for a blunt cut. It seems like my former stylist must have blunt cut my hair, and then added some point cutting to the top to finish it off and add movement. Except, her point cutting seemed like it was kind chunky. Is that a thing, or am I full of it? Anyway, I can't figure out what she did.
Yes, I have had this problem with hairdressers thinning my fine hair too much and making it look much thinner with that point cutting. I did get through to an older hair dresser one time. I said, " can you blunt cut my hair when you are layering it into a short style. She seemed to be a bit puzzled but thought about it and did blunt cut my hair where she could. It was a nice haircut, my daughter said it looked good, I said "yes, it's because I asked the hair dresser to blunt cut it and it looks thicker." I do notice that a lot of hairdressers seem to default to that point cutting as though thats what they like to do. I wonder why they are not taught at hairdressing school, about cutting this way on fine hair. I got a surprise when you lifted up the head and turned it right around I had thought it was a real girl sitting there as I was focusing more on your cutting. I had to laugh.
I was getting so frustrated with stylists that I learned to point cut my own hair. I'd get a couple major haircuts or trims in a year and I'd maintain and shape it myself the rest of the time.
I really need a cut but don't feel safe enough yet to go to a salon. I am a curly girl, but my hair is fine, so I think I go for the blunt cut :) Wish me luck! :D This video was very informative, thank you :)
Well you've just enhanced my taste.. I always request my hairdresser for blunt cutting when having my trims.. I like to see the scissor effect in blunt healthy ends .. Because anyway they will become jaggered at the next trim time..
Sometimes ( In My Opinion and 28 years experience behind the chair) point cutting is the only way to go. When u have someone with thick poker straight hair and they want layers, for the hair to flow and look blended you have to point cut. If not, u will see every cut mark and the hair won’t look blended even if it is.
In my experience as a client it is absolutely achievable to have a well cut and blended layered hair. I have had the pleasure and experience twice in my lifetime when the hairdresser was keen, willing and talented and didn't mind spending extra time blending by blunt cutting by very fine section by section. The result was fantastic, stunning...Didn't require styling. Unfortunately I moved far far away 11 years ago. The rest of the times I had my cut it is in pieces due to point cutting, thinning, etc. Hair loses the shape and is out of control, looks a mess, no amount of styling can fix it. Never found a hairdresser since who was able to blunt cut and blend at the same time. It CAN be done. People either don't have the skills or are just lazy.
Isn’t point cutting a way to make it blend better? When I was in hair school in 1995, they didn’t even have point cutting. I have never learned point cutting but to me it seems much harder than blunt cutting cuz you kinda do both with point cutting, right? The other guy is right about changing your shirt color cuz we can’t really see much. I do appreciate you making this video, thank you.
To me the point cutting side looked fuller than the blunt side...I'd like to see it done on blonde hair bc I believe we could see those layers better...thx ..I will like & subscribe now.
Blonde fine bleached forever hair here. Personally, I feel much more feminine from feeling the weight of my hair and the way it swings wen I move my head. Those of us with fine hair have spent the entirety of our lives feeling as we have none because it HAS NO weight. Hope that helps explain why we choose blunt. 🙄 For me... it's about how it "feels" as much as the way it "looks"
Well... yes! This is what I want and I do believe that I have my stylist on board now. But I still have a problem with my sides. I am lucky as I have medium to thick hair depending on weather it can slightly wave to frizz or in winter be heavier and straight. So this point cut is totally out for me. Thankyou for this video. Now if you have a video or 2 about angles and how to cut them , I seriously need advise for my sides now. I don't want the sides to angle like a bob, rather with my current style that is a shorter to the shoulder Cheryl Tiegs or even a blow out style of Farah Fawcett. Again thankyou.
thinning hair and layering in one step by using longitudal method of cutting . takes bulk out of thick hair while layering it all in one . thanks for the techniques you shared .
I only had 2 caucasian stylists who knew how to point cut. Most dont know what they're doing but blunt cut has a place in styling. Asian stylists on the other hand, know their ish.
That really answer my question because watching the videos you hear them say point cutting but as I watch them points because I didn't understand it but now I get a clear understanding as to what they mean by point cutting thanks to you
Hi! I do wish you could be my stylist! A girl can dream. I prefer blunt cuts for my ends. I also prefer the hair dresser to cut my hair while it is wet because I have curly hair and in my experience the hair cuts are more precise that way. I wear my hair mostly straightened but sometimes curly.
You mean mostly hair dressers have cut your hair dry because you have curly hair? I also have curly hair and always thought dry cutting is best and I want that, but every hair cut I got they always cut it wet.
I HATE point cutting . No woman wants thin straggly jagged hair . It’s impossible to style . I am so angry that hairstylists take it upon themselves to cut out the bulk when you say I want it to look fuller w long layers .
I have same problem trying to get the stylists to not point cut my hair & to blunt cut it the way I like it! What's up with that?? Seriously, does anybody have any advice or answers? Thank you in advance if you do. After all, it's OUR hair and OUR money!!!!!!!
Are you familiar with the Sahag style of cutting? (John Sahag) When I had a stylist that would cut my (fine) hair with that technique I absolutely loved my “faux-hawk!” I got so many compliments. 5x in one day haha. Now I have a different stylist and she does point cut. I do have fine hair and it just doesn’t lay quite the same. I will say my hair looks choppy if it’s a blunt cut. But that could have been the particular person who cut it back in the day.
A lot of people hating on the point cut - but dang it looks so good! Salonguy, was the pointcut how Farrah Fawcett achieved those amazing locks, you think?
I have really frizzy hair. Point cutting makes it frizzier. I like when my cut is blunt cut then a few point cuttings to take some of the bulk out. Old school.
This is a great video! Thank you for sharing the difference between blunt cutting and point cutting. I always wondered about this. I have a question.. do you think point cutting is better for fine thin hair or do you prefer blunt cutting better. I think you said in the video, point cutting is better for flow and blunt cutting makes it thicker. Did I understand that right? Thanks for sharing with us! I really appreciate all the knowledge your so willing to share.
Thank you, I found this helpful. I would like to know what point cutting actually does to the hair shaft compared to blunt cutting, and what difference that makes to how the ends look. For example does it literally taper each individual hair a little at the ends, or does it make no difference in that sense?
My hair is SUPER fine and thin. I’ve been going to the same hair dresser for 5 years and I finally decided to do the “big chop”. I had 9 inches cut off and he point cut 2-3 INCHES in on some sections. Like a true zig zag on my ends. I’ve had a blunt cut layer bob before and my hair actually looked thick then. Now it looks terrible and lays even flatter. 😢I’m wearing it in a clip every day until I can find someone new that can actually understand this concept. Salons did when I had my bob in the 2010 time frame so I don’t know what’s changed…
Could you make a video on Ronnie Radkes Haircut? Specifically the one from 2019 with the bleached hair? Would love to know what to tell my hairdresser!
Hii you’re amazing, so down to earth and really easy to listen to, i appreciate you so much My question is, if my mom has straight hair and she wants like a long pixie, she likes it short on top but not too short in the back (not a mullet lol) but almost similar with a very texturized look , would i still cut blunt lines? I’ve been point cutting her for years and it looks great for a few days then it just falls flat, she’s not the best with upkeep and products or styling and I’m sure that’s part of the problem as well, hope to hear back from you, thanks again and happy new year
Aw thx so much. I always cut blunt then go back in and add the texture after. Point cutting to me misses parts of the hair that need to be cut which is why I never do it.
Yes it looks easy when you do it working on a maniquin heagd, but trying to cut your own hair during lockdown is a whole different ball game- same thing applies to doing your own blow dry!
I cut my own hair because I've only ever found two good stylists--most either ruin my hair or trim around the edges which I can do myself for free. It's fine, thick and shows every cut so I mostly point cut. The schools need to improve their training, imho.
I wish a I had known about this video yesterday. Woman was just taking her scissors and clipping at random along with point cutting. I now know to ask for a blunt cut and for them to put down their thinning shears which ruins my hair and it's thin enough.
I feel like the ends of my hair look frayed afyer a lady cut my hair and i didn't ask for that and she fucked my hair up so bad its one of tbe worzt haircuts ive ever had and I've had ALot of cuts ..and it was alao the most expensive
Fantastic explanation! A new hairdresser made a real disaster in my head: I wanted to fix my pixie cut, which I was used to not having to dry: he cut my wavy hair with the point cutting technique and now I find myself with unmanageable hair ... especially in the front, now there are waves that are really unmanageable. How to fix this ugly haircut?

I returned today to have more layering done....still not right. 😢
I have a VERY DISTINCT blunt top layer that doesn't blend in with the beautiful wavy almost curly hair underneath, I can't even scrunch it to make it look decent. 😭
I was at the store in the hair products hoping to find something to possibly enhance the top layer when a young woman & I were talking.
Sadi T...
EXACTLY the problem I JUST had with my new cut yesterday &
I'm heartbroken at the results I got, returned today to have layers & couldn't seem to make her understand I CANNOT have a blunt cut.
Glad it was helpful!

I prefer point cutting 👌😘
Thank you 🙏
Yes I agree the blunt cut is best for fine hair..i have tried the pointed cut and it was a disaster
Amazing and sorry I wear black a lot lol
Thanks for explaining it.. I would like better the blunt technique, since I'm older now and my hair has thinned out a bit.. great video and you explained it perfect!!🥰💞
I prefer blunt cutting. I like having the clean lines at the end of my hair. 😃
Thank you! This was so informative, loved the comparison between the two cuttings, you made it very clear
You explained it so well. My favorite video by far on point/blunt cutting. 👍👍👍
Love the demonstration. Yes! Blunt cut for my fine hair. Some stylists don't listen. What's that all about???
They're fucking stupid and only know one technique. I've been to tons of stylists and they all insist on point cutting my fine hair. Idiots
ty for explaining that.... my hair is very thin as i have gotten older... it used to be thick..... but i prefer the point cut i think because with my thin hair it makes it lighter.. gives it more bounce .. : )
This video was great for understanding the difference between the two.
It was a nice haircut, my daughter said it looked good, I said "yes, it's because I asked the hair dresser to blunt cut it and it looks thicker."
I do notice that a lot of hairdressers seem to default to that point cutting as though thats what they like to do.
TSG I like your new hairstyle. It's good to switch it up every once in a while.
I really need a cut but don't feel safe enough yet to go to a salon. I am a curly girl, but my hair is fine, so I think I go for the blunt cut :) Wish me luck! :D
This video was very informative, thank you :)
Well you've just enhanced my taste.. I always request my hairdresser for blunt cutting when having my trims.. I like to see the scissor effect in blunt healthy ends .. Because anyway they will become jaggered at the next trim time..
Any advice on how to get these stylists to give us blunt cuts we want?
@@mintcrush2042 just ask and insist...
@@6972roni Yes but can they do it?
@@terezahs77 they definitely should be able to... Or else don't go again..
I hate point cutting tried it on a piece hate the jagged edge, I prefer blunt cuts nice and neat. This video is very helpful
AMEN!!!
He has hair!!!! I only saw his bald videos so I’m deeply in shock
I ordered the hair cutting Combs .
Thx!!!
very informative definitely gave me a better understanding as a barber!! 👍🏻
Everytime i watch one of his videos i suddenly want to get a haircut, i have no idea what thats about lol
Hi Stephen, you look amazing. Love this video.
Thx!!!
Thank you for give me an understand of the difference between point and blunt cutting.
I only had 2 caucasian stylists who knew how to point cut. Most dont know what they're doing but blunt cut has a place in styling. Asian stylists on the other hand, know their ish.
I really like your video, I rather point cutting because I have thick hair,
I found this video to be very helpful. Educational certainly. Thank you.
That really answer my question because watching the videos you hear them say point cutting but as I watch them points because I didn't understand it but now I get a clear understanding as to what they mean by point cutting thanks to you
Great video. I am going to attempt to cut my long layered fine wavy hair soon. I have done blunt cuts before so I think that will be easier for me.
Thank you so much for the video, you are such a wonderful teacher!!!
Thanks for this great video, so informative!! Is a point cut healthy for the hair ends? Or will it cause split ends? Thanks so much!😀
I have straight thin hair, but lots of it, thankfully. I HATE point cutting because it makes it look like you have split ends.
Thanks for that. Helpful. I appreciate you taking the time.
I love blunt cut.
I dont understand why stylist in my country just love to do point cut when i specifically told them to do blunt cut.
Thank you. So helpful! First hit and it was a perfect explanation.
I enjoy watching your videos, what does using a razor actually do to the hair then? Thanks for sharing Steven
I got a fine hair and i prefer point cut cuz it make my hair look kinda messy and more natural.
grat info, wish they had U Tube in 1978 when I was learning cosmetology.Retired now.
I have really frizzy hair. Point cutting makes it frizzier. I like when my cut is blunt cut then a few point cuttings to take some of the bulk out. Old school.
Imagine rocking bald hair and looking good with it while also having hair and also looking good with it, you look good bro
Yes he said blunt for fine hair. Sorry a little late commenting!
If you have fine hair, it should be a blunt haircut
Thank you for explaining. Very informative.
Excellent video! Thanks!
This video was informative thankyou
Could you make a video about grouping hair? My hair strands get separate after I shower and it doesn't look good.
Could you make a video on Ronnie Radkes Haircut? Specifically the one from 2019 with the bleached hair? Would love to know what to tell my hairdresser!
Hii you’re amazing, so down to earth and really easy to listen to, i appreciate you so much
My question is, if my mom has straight hair and she wants like a long pixie, she likes it short on top but not too short in the back (not a mullet lol) but almost similar with a very texturized look , would i still cut blunt lines? I’ve been point cutting her for years and it looks great for a few days then it just falls flat, she’s not the best with upkeep and products or styling and I’m sure that’s part of the problem as well, hope to hear back from you, thanks again and happy new year
Aw thx so much. I always cut blunt then go back in and add the texture after. Point cutting to me misses parts of the hair that need to be cut which is why I never do it.
My first time seeing him with hair.
Yes it looks easy when you do it working on a maniquin heagd, but trying to cut your own hair during lockdown is a whole different ball game- same thing applies to doing your own blow dry!
I have numerous videos on those topics you can follow
I cut my own hair because I've only ever found two good stylists--most either ruin my hair or trim around the edges which I can do myself for free. It's fine, thick and shows every cut so I mostly point cut. The schools need to improve their training, imho.
I wish a I had known about this video yesterday. Woman was just taking her scissors and clipping at random along with point cutting. I now know to ask for a blunt cut and for them to put down their thinning shears which ruins my hair and it's thin enough.
I have a question. What about when you are cutting your hair short? Isn't it too choppy looking to cut blunt layers for a pixie cut?
Great info!!! Thanks🙂
Thank you!! Your explanation is on point
Thank you so so so so so so much!! Great advice about fine hair!
awsome video, learned something new here !!!! :DD
why did you wear dark shirt especially black? you should wear contrast shirt colour.
My hair is short, and blunt cut in layers. Thank you for showing me how to point cut correctly. ♡
Thankyou,I asked ,what exactly does point cutting do?I love layered messy look, but cut my own hair,so I end up cutting my hair backwards ,😳🤯
Yes, very helpful!!!
