Hey good one Dave. I think that I would have no problems talking with Cullen, but interviewing him would be challenging. He is so good at speaking off the cuff, that I could see myself stammering or trying to think up appropriate big words and sounding like an idiot - You however did great.
As far as the tools and learning- For the last 40 years I have always thought that while doing anything, if it seems like there should be a better way to achieve something. There probably is. We either haven't learned it yet, or we should invent, or figure out the better way to do it.
That aha moment happened when I had someone "training me" to do bookkeeping in Excel on a computer. And after inputting the column of cost of goods and prices sold, she then told me to use the calculator to subtract one number from the other, and type the total into a third column and then add that column up ( with the calculator ) type in the total at the bottom. The whole time thinking and staring at the SUM icon sitting there at the top of the screen.
I also am starting to see a pattern of colorists and musicians. Or minimum colorists that play guitar. Myself included - I have a musical history that was my passion from teens to thirty. Being a full time gig for the whole decade of the 1980s.
The one thing that Cullen said that I don't really agree with is that colorists not telling people the tricks of the trade. I find them to be extremely open and giving, which by the way includes him.
Anyway thanks Dave, really good interview.

Hey Jim! I appreciate the kind words. I felt the same way, to be honest. Obviously I tried to get that out of my mind, but Cullen is definitely an expert when it comes to speaking off the cuff, that's for sure.
Thank you for sharing that story about Excel. It's so true. Sometimes we just make things harder than they need to be.
and 100%, regarding musicians. Cullen admitted he's no expert in that realm, but there definitely seems to be that common thread. Must just be a creative mindset thing. Also, I agree. Most experiences I've had with other colorists have been great. I guess I could understand how guarded some people might be as they may not want to lose business, but as Darren Mostyn said in a recent interview (which I am sure you saw), there is enough work to go around for everyone.
