I think he said JLo "represents" something important to people to distance her from the public image she has. As we saw, he values his privacy and feels strongly that there is a difference between how he is perceived vs who he really is/how he identifies himself. It seems like he feels the same for her, and he is distancing her from what she represents to people just to subtly remind us that we don't really know her either.
    Great video, as always :)

What an interesting perspective. Because he also talks alot about how the public persona celebrities have is fake so it would make alot of sense that what he means is people love what she represents because that’s all they know. They can’t love her because they don’t know her. Such a great interpretation, thank you!

@@TheBehavioralArts Thanks :) It almost felt protective of her to me, like he wasn't distancing her from the fame or the greatness but he was distancing our knowledge of her personally as a way of respecting her privacy.

@@TheBehavioralArts I thought the "she's so famous" gesture just wasn't genuine. It was trying to cover up something or another thought or feeling. His focus is more on what people think. To me there is a lot of effort on his part to appear a certain way or hide his true feelings in general about everything. He ranted at a roast recently so I think he's focusing on appearing neutral and positive and feels embarrassed about that

    • @TheBehavioralArts
      @TheBehavioralArts  6 місяців тому +20

@@evap.5121 it’s definitely possible that there’s some of that. As you know, eye blocking isn’t a conclusive gesture it doesn’t mean one thing so it can be emphasis but it can also be blocking. Like I said, I can argue that one both ways and I think that’s fine. Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking body language can always give us all the answers. 🤗

@@TheBehavioralArts I thought he mentioned it to emphasize the story he was telling about time square and draw the picture of how famous she is, so one can only imagine the type of attention that would elicit, especially in a place like time square. I also do think there was something of protection like the first commentor said.

Super useful! I am auditorially sensitive (I also do a lot of eye blocking for concentration, like Affleck seems to), and I’m quite confident in my ability to “hear” subtle cues in someone’s word choice and tone. But playing the video alone is helping me to feel more confident in my visual body language reading. I absolutely nailed which clip was which, even though I didn’t consciously pick up the visual cues of contempt, for instance. Overall, I could sense the “tone” of what he was saying without the sound, though. It was very interesting.
Thanks, Spidey! Keep doing this, please!
Also, I wonder if there might be times that it could be useful to play the audio only, without the video, and see if we could guess what visual body language was going along with the audio cues of tone, word choice, pauses, and emphasis (or lack of it.) So many people focus on the physical body cues to the exclusion of everything else. But I’ve seen/heard you taking both into account, and I really appreciate that.

Love your videos, Spidey! Just came to remind people there is nothing wrong with being a mechanic, or doing custodial work, etc. if that is what feeds you and your family, and you are not unhappy in your work. Some people look at life like a competition, or look down on these very necessary type of jobs, jobs that some people take no issue with. If you are unhappy in what YOU do, YOU make that change for yourself. But don't look to society for approval about what YOU want to do with YOUR life, and don't put others down for what they choose to do with theirs. Remember that life isn't about how famous you become, or about how much money you amass.
I remember reading this little story at a Jimmy John's once years ago and I feel it serves as a good reminder that true success and happiness are often misunderstood by our (American) society:
    "How Much is Enough"
The American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied, “Only a little while.” The American then asked why he didn’t stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The American then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?” The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.” The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat, and with the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats. Eventually, you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.” The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, how long will this take?” To which the American replied, “15-20 years.” “But what then?” The American laughed and said, "That’s the best part. When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.” “Millions?” asked the fisherman. “Then what?” The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evening, sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos!”

Clip 1, neutral. Clip 2, admiration
    1. His body moves side to side evenly. His gestures don’t seem very emphatic. He doesn’t look up and down. He transfers energy from hand to hand as he speaks, but does not favor one side to the other or make a strong direction punctuation (i.e. no hand punching forward or up or down). His body language shows no particular emphasis as he goes through the conversation . He seems to be saying with his side to side hand and head movements “Well, it could be this. Or it might be that. But you never can tell.” He shrugs his shoulders a lot.
Clip 2. He becomes physically more excitable with hand movements. He looks more directly at the interviewer. He looks up (full head movement) and gestures upwards with a hand. He has that far off slight grin at times that people get when they are thinking fondly of something or someone. His eyebrow flashes are more emphatic as he continues his speaking.
There is so much in both, that I could talk about this for as long or longer than your whole session.

But being so innocent that he wasn’t quite sure to how to handle it emotionally.

During clip 2, he's looking straight at kevin and emphasizing more, eyebrows up, trying to make a case. And then even that look up to the ceiling, like, see this person is up here.

In regards to when he’s talking about J-Lo (30:56):

Re: Eyes closed (blocking) recalling the memory: When he’s closing his eyes (eye blocking) the expression on his face looks like he’s talking about something sentimental and positive. Like he’s recalling one of the most treasured things to eat during his favorite holiday as a boy. Sentimental affection.
Re: She represents something important to people (w/ hands going into fists): What I heard with the distancing language is that he admires her for the amount of fame she has because this is what he values himself, like a personal constitution, to be known and respected widely (also might be connected to the conflicting feelings he has about his dad). He is very much tuned in to how he is perceived/received by others (his personality's default settings tip toward high image consciousness). I think he’s talking affectionately about her, and this is the flavor it takes on: idealization. He idealizes her image (and namely being important in the eyes of others, something he secretly strives for himself). BUT his fists represent the conflict he has with that much importance/fame: the pressure. The pressure to fit the image. The same frustration he emits when talking about how he is perceived by others.

Your comment on how people perceive you got me. I was perceived in high school as being very sophisticated when actually I was painfully shy. 40 years later and having lost all my shyness I went to our reunion and was surprised to find out that the ones I perceived as mean and “popular “ were suffering angst just like me. Actually I was just totally self centered and I think most shy people are. “are they looking at me” was drilled into me by my mother who told me how beautiful I was from infancy which literally gave me the creeps. I could go in how that influenced my sisters perception of me and herself . Weird life as I think back.

I agree. I think JLo is more famous than Ben. Not because she’s a better artist or anything mind you. I think he’s just less out there than she is and her audience/ fans encompasses Latinos that are not bilingual and includes music, movies, and television. So she just has a greater reach by virtue of the type of work she does. Ben does some good acting work, but also a lot behind the scenes. So not necessarily in the spotlight as much.

I feel that the way u explain them gives a sense of resonating with the person in question or the question in question. I apply what ur talking about to u also. ur baseline and hand gestures when u talk is resounding to me. in a sense not in it for the views but to spread a true knowledge , learning lots of people r full of shit now days and crap we were taught as we were growing up.....at home, in school etc. I just want to say thank u for not being selfish with the knowledge. I'm finding out I have a lot of interest in the y's of person rather than the hows and the what's of them. I'm learning the different aspects that make a person with a soul and how little u can know about them and still just know the true them..I hope this makes sense to u, cuz it was kinda hard to put into words how I genuinely felt about u and ur videos....its hard to know truth without truth in it. thanks again.
