- Rotoscoping objects (selecting just the objects, without selecting anything else) can be a very tedious and time consuming process. But now, with the object mask / tracker in Davinci Resolve, you can get all that time back, and use less effort! Is this tool just as good as Adobe's Rotobrush tool? Let's take a look!

Be sure to have the 18.2 studio version release to use this!
Things I want to point is is when you are making your stroke on an object, it is looking for color. You want as much color separation as possible. The shadows is the reason the ground was picked up. If you had the car in an area where there is good color separation, you will get better selections. Same with the basketball. The color above it is close to the color on the ball so it was selected. If you do photo editing then you understand this well but just something to keep in mind.
Amazing!
Fingers crossed this gets added to Fusion in the next release. In 18.4 they added depth map to Fusion and they added surface tracking in I think 18.3 so I'm hoping they'll do the same with this next time.
This tool looks very good.. Looking forward to test it myself.
This works Hella good! Recommended
very good explanation...Thank u♥
Thanx, really helpful!
I dont make any movies but this software is more than awesome !
I really dont do mask stuff I just followed your video this is a game changer
Great video! Very informative. I have a scene where a not noticed light stand is in the background. I can mask the light stand, blur it slightly, but an actor crosses in front of it momentarily. Can I use the same method that you used in the basketball example to minimize the fact that a light stand is in the back ground?
I am really close to getting a new system , Magic Mask on my Mac Pro Trashcan, pretty much kills it. And I find it strange that even after you have done all the tracking and such, that it doesn't release the GPU memory. You would think they could add a matte function to copy a matte. Much like Photoshop opens a refine window on selections, then asks you how to apply it.
I wonder if it is possible to achieve results with the new FX Map Depth plugin❓
This is very helpful, thanks! Quick question - I don't know what I am doing wrong but when I apply the object mask, everything works, the color changes and everything however when I go back to the timeline in edit, all changes disappear. I can still see that my strokes are there, but the changes no longer work. When I toggle on and off as well to see the mask in the color tab, it no longer shows me the changes I made. Really frustrating as the rotoscoping I did was a bit complex and it's a shame to see all that effort wasted :( Can you think of why this may be happening in my case please?
My windows and options don't look like yours. It would be super helpful if you could walk us through how to get these settings so I can actually follow along.
Wow rly its true
Is it required to buy the license to try this feature?
Just a quick suggestion and not saying just you, but most all tutorial videos for Resolve on UA-cam just list the video as resolve x.x leaving free users always scratching their head or getting angry cause they keep trying to figure out why it isn't working for them. If the creators just put "Studio" in the header then it would cut down on some of those frustrated viewers. Great video btw showing the different scenarios of use.
Is magic mask not available in free version?
I really hope that they will fix that whenever you rotoscope and make alpha output - you cant make any adjustments in the editing page as it deletes all the tracking data. And it is VERY annoying, cause the mask tracking works amazing. Can see a lot of use cases.
