Andy, when you turned over Lala and I saw the nest of wires, I was reminded of a Three Stooges episode where Curly says to Moe, “Hey Moe, no wonder it doesn’t work-it’s all full of wires!” (I’m paraphrasing, I haven’t seen the episode since I was a child, watching after-school syndicated re-runs.) Thanks for a great video. I will definitely be tuning in to see how you make that old cloth wire longer. 😋

Watched this streaming on the tv - wow, it was up close and so clear!
I've wondered about that wiring underneath but nobody I've asked knows why it's like that.

Wow, thanks "teacher" Nola. I did not know you could watch any of my videos on TV. It's a good thing I try and record them in HD. The extra time for rendering and uploading seems worth it now. Thanks for asking around about the wiring, and thanks for watching my channel. Take Care.

I usually watch on my phone but I really wanted to see up close what you were doing so I decided to go watch it on the computer. As I walked past the tv, I thought I'd give it a try. It is amazing how much detail you can see!

The soldered loop on the wire coming from the light to the switch is the type loop Singer uses because of the diameter of the screw. The switch has a notch on the bottom to allow for clearance to install the plug.

Appreciate this info very much, Lin. I have not mounted the 3-pin termina with the switch in place yet, so it's good to know why the switch was made that way. Thanks for watching.

hi andy....well measured the new cabinet on the left side and its 2 1/4 to the frame and went upstairs and measured from the actual pin on the machine to the edge of the base...its will just make it at 2 1/4 DEPENDING on how the pins set in the machine and the weight .....as to how it will shift onto the frame...i MIGHT end up taking a file. Yes, we have some of your neighbors as "Snowbirds" visit us from November thru March when the temps are in the 40 to 70 range. I imagine our summer monsoon storms are a little like some of your nor'easters... fast and furious. I could not take the cold or your humidity 😉 Your cabinet is newer than I thought. I was hoping it was an older solid wood model. Easy does it with any filing/cutting and you can brush a light coat of glue over the raw edge afterwards. You'll be fine. Nice fix on the lollipop hinge cutout! A creative northwoods lady, are you? Take Care.

Thanks for another great video. I learn so much from watching you. I’m guessing you will pull back some of the covering on the short light wire, solder on a piece of new wire and use shrink tube. Or will you remove the light socket, remove the too-short wire and add totally new wire? I have several Featherweights, but have only had to remove the entire lamp wire on one of them. I clean the white oxidation off the lead tube with kerosene and a stiff brush and when finished I apply lubricant to the lead wire to prevent more lead flakes from forming. I’ve been told that Singer used the flexible lead tube for the light wires so that it could be moved up off the gears as you said. Some people are afraid to clean the thick lead flakes off the tube for fear of inhaling lead. It can be cleaned while wearing a mask and gloves, working where there is good ventilation and being careful. I can’t stand that nasty build up of lead falling into the gears in a machine. When is your next video? Renea Mayfield

Thanks for watching. I decided to do some soldering, but no shrink tubing. It looks like all the wiring will be a very tight fit. I'll be using LET over the solder and making some new wire loops to go on the terminals. I've been working on it when I felt well enough. Today I found the wire loop for the screw on the switch is hanging on by one wire strand 👀 Yikes! So I plan to solder a sort wire extension with a new loop on the end to reach the switch. My old soldering iron gave up the ghost so I had to buy a new one. No worries, I've been getting donations 😀 The lead tubing is in very good shape, no flaking, so I just rubbed it with oil for a few minutes. I worked with some lead-sheathed cable 40 years ago so definitely used a mask & gloves! Hope to get the next video up soon. Thanks for the comment. Take Care.

As you mention, the lead is used to route the cables, so they don't rub against the gears and end up breaking and causing an electrical nightmare. I recently repaired a 221 that needed new cables, and I solved the problem of routing the wires by wrapping them with a dry-cleaner cloth hanger.
I also recommend replacing all the cables with new gauge 18 ones, and using some of these (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NVCXJXO/ ) for the terminals. In case you have to desolder and solder again some of them (the lamp terminals are soldered, similar to the one that goes to the switch) and you don't feel brave enough to try it, I recommend finding someone who can help you do it. Those original cables are a problem waiting to happen.

    Hi Andy,

What lubricant do you put into the 221 motor?
    Many thanks,
    Regards,

Thanks, Ann. I use the grease from the featherweight shop:
      singer-featherweight.com/collections/shop/products/sew-retro-grease
Some of the videos in my 221 playlist are about cleaning the motor and replacing the old, hard grease wicks and using the grease to "pre-charge" the new wicks, then adding more grease into the ports. Here is the playlist:

That is a model 401A Slant-O-Matic, a $450 machine in 1960. That's about $3,900 in 2020 dollars. 👀 I do not know the model number or name of the table I thought it was maple) but it was very popular for the 401A, 403A & 404 models. Usually the spacing for the hinges are the same aon all models. To see if your machine fits in the cabinet check the spacing from the first hinge (left) to the left edge of the wood opening. Any space to the right of the machine can be filled in or left open.
The bracket and knee lever are made so the foot pedal can slide up into it and "snap" in place, with a bracket on the knee lever that pushes on the button of the button style foot pedal, or the top cover of the clamshell style foot pedal.
