Learn how to easily adjust the speed control on the later, clamshell-style foot controller (aka: foot pedal) common to the white Singer Featherweight 221K. Carmon Henry from the Featherweight Shop will guide you for properly adjusting the foot controller to obtain a full range of speed.
Thanks! Still helping folks five years on!
Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know! I love your shop and how generous you are with sharing knowledge. You folks are wonderful!
Thank you. This has just saved me either buying a new pedal or a new machine.
Perfection! Just what I needed to know. How to open, how it works, and what to adjust. You sir, are my hero.
Thanks so much. I'm on a midnight mission to revive an old sewing machine and I couldn't figure out how to open the foot pedal with the rubber underneath. I'm going to set the speed control now!!! You're a light saber ~~
awesome, just what i needed for a Singer 628 pedal
ended up Dremeling the hole for the screw to let the L shaped contact slide over
Hey, have a good Memorial weekend. That white featherweight is beautiful. Thanks for putting this up. Smiles to you and yours. Thumbs up!
Hello Carmen, thank you for the excellent lesson on adjusting the clamshell foot controllers for Featherweights and other older Singers that have a similar style controller. I find your Featherweight teaching videos to be the best on the web, and your store is tops. If you weren’t so far away, I’d love to stop in to see your store. Many thanks for all your help over many videos...
Featherweight Shop, you guys there are the best. No other sewing shop compares even closely to you. Keep up your wonderful teaching and kind assistance to customers. Thank you for everything.
I am so greatful. Thank you so much for the good explanation. My footpedal is working great again.
So that's how you open the pedal ... thank you. Sorted.
For those with the foot controller without screwson the bottom:
the 2 hollow plastic hinge pins need to be removed to open it. You can use a thin sheet metal screw. Insert with barely a 1/2 turn (otherwise it will expand the pin and make it tighter) and pull it out.
Otherwise you can drill them out with a 3/16" drill bit and find some replacement pins/dowels. You must use soft material for the pins otherwise you WILL crack the housing. Do not use screws to replace the pins!
Thank you so much for this! I think I just learnt what 'ghost sewing' is. And there I was, only worrying about thread tension... I too wish I could visit your shop in person. That would allow me to submit my broken off extension table to your attention :(
Hi Carmon! You’re my hero! I thought I would have to buy a new controller! It is working again but now I cannot sew slowly mode. It only goes full speed although I have followed your steps. Any thoughts?
I have a 221K Singer machine. Thanks!
Is there an adjustable foot controller for a 7256 Fashionmate?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for the video! Wondering if you can help explain a mystery. I am using this foot switch with a singer motor to turn a guitar pickup winder. The pedal is getting hot and smoking. Not sure why or know what to do. Thanks!
So helpful. Thank you.
is it normal that the foot controller gets warm, can overheating happens?
Hi, I wonder if you could help me please, I am trying to rewire a Singer 457 but before I can, I have to work out how it is working because I can't find any internal wiring diagrams showing how they work, from what I can work out the internal motor is insulated from the machine using Nylon components and has one side permanent live and the other side seems to be variable neutral through the foot switch, also the capacitor is across the motor terminals, would you agree with this ?
My machine just goes very slow. I changed the motor and the belt and lubed the whole machine, with no change. Could the foot pedal be out of adjustment?

Does anyone know how to open the clamshell that doesn't have the screw?

How do I repair a motor for singer sewing machine
Hi, really helpful video! However my issue falls into a slightly different category and I’m wondering if you could help. I have a Singer 237 that won’t go full speed. It either goes slow or slightly faster than slow. I’ve adjusted the pedal as shown in your video and the only change is I can make it not work at all by backing out the screw on the right side. I’ve tried moving the contact spring closer and further away as well. Any ideas?

Hi, I have a Singer 1411 with a clam shell electronic foot controller. The electrical cord is pulling out of the case. How do I get the case open to get the cord back in correctly. We cannot find any screws to open the case. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. Nice video. I’ve got a capacitor and a resistor in my pedal and smoke coming out of the capacitor.
I just got one, and when I turn it on the power of the peddle is fullblast instantly, any idea what I might do? :) very very much appreciated if you know!

Bonjour, J'ai le même problème, en fait le bout de la vis est fendue et creuse, un embout conique écarte le bout de la vis lors du serrage. Merci pour ce tuto. fb
