Sand Katze I Agree! MH4U was my first game of the series, and I never though about getting too far because it seemed too hard. One of the reasons I keep coming back to it is how collaborative the community is. There is always someone providing good advice.
+Artur Botarelli Solo player here (I'd prefer loyal multiplayer, but my friends aren't into MH), I started with Freedom Unite, but I didn't get very far because I didn't have much time back then. So MH4U was pretty much my first MH as well. I like how every monster can be beaten solo or in a group. Everyone can play MH, regardless of their preferences.
The most powerful skill is honed blade imo. I remember in the old game people doing everything for a sharpness +1 and attack up L and it was just ridiculous how powerful that was and still is. Remember: sharpness up also increases your damage a lot!
With Miralis set (and Handicraft +5 (and 3 slots (!) if you lucky), you can potentially get: Attack Up (XL) Latent Power +2 Sharpness +1 Rock Steady Short Sprinter This one surpasses Honed Blade. (It's super powerful but for the charm it requires tremendous luck)
+Jordan William but this is not as good as honed blade. If you get an edgemaster +5 relic you can make insane sets with weakness exploit, challenger and crit +. It's easier to get than auXL and sharpness +1 combined and many armor pieces you need for these sets have great skills by default which is really healpful.
+Jordan William not really. I have a lot of sets that can only work with honed blade but not with auL and sharpness +1 and that even though I have a talisman with attack +12 and 3 slots. It's not really worth it.
Thanks a lot, I've been looking for something like this ever since I got my first set with Challenger+2! And you're right, combine this skill with something like Rodeo God and Attack Up and a Gore Magala becomes a piece of cake.
xD I was literally going to ask about the defence stacking, glad to see it functions in the same manner as attack. Thanks for the (yet another) very informative video.
I was confused about the groups, over which attack /defence stats overwrite or are uneffected by the others in the same group, so im glad this video has simplified it, now i know, thanks :P
Thanks for this, I needed something I could easily reference for stacking attack buffs. Keep up the good work! Video was informative and enjoyable, as always.
Hello Gaijin, I really like when you do this kind of -deep understanding" videos, since many of us still have a lot to learn even tho we have years playing. That's why I wanna ask you if you could make a video explaining the different shields in the game. We know Lance is the strongest shield in the game, but it is equipparable to Gunlance and Charge Blade (when charged)? I'd like to see a video showing the different kind of shields in the game around every weapon which is able to block. Cheers!
Amazing video! I've been wondering how this mechanic worked for a very long time. There is only one little thing I'd like to ask for, and that's the duration of certain buffs that weren't explicit in the video, such as the Hunting Horn's. Thanks!
This video is old and all but... There are a couple of nuances with Defense stacking. While the rule that "Defense stacking == Attack stacking" is on-point for the most part... There are some very niche and specific scenarios where values can still get overwritten (most notably Mega Armorskin and Attack Up L (felyne), while the kitchen skill does indeed give base +7, Mega Armorskin overwrites it because it gives base +10)... Funny when you think about it.
Great stuff! it's really helpful to know all the little details for damage. Is there any chance you can do a defense stacking video, for us tank-y types?
Challenger +2 was still a +25 raw boost back in 3 Ultimate, there just wasn't an equivalent Attack Up skill at that point. The "glowy arm" skills aren't combo skills like Honed Blade which is also why they stack.
My only complaint: A lack of a final tally of max boosts you can have active at once. (not theoretically, but in actuality.) What kind of max bonus are we looking at? There's a few monsters that I can fairly reliably beat without getting hit, but just how big of a total difference would it make? 10%, 20%, 30%, etc.? As well as the lack of references to elemental (despite it being a far easier thing to calculate, since there's pretty much a straight up cap on it.) I'm a DB main, and I'm not sure how worth it it would be to make a specific set for farming certain things, since elemental skills generally outperform most raw skills, but how exactly does the stacking work? If you could theoretically stack every top buff in all of the categories, would it be better to go full raw, even with what's arguably the best (or 2nd best.) elemental weapon in the game, or is there certain skills that would be better converted to elemental? would Fire attack up beat out Attack up still, even if you took into account all of the raw % boosts? 65% is A LOT, but how would that compare to the elemental boosts, assuming 100% hitzone for both?
Got some question here!! When eat might seed(3mins) and then u eat a a might pill(20secs) it "overrides" it right... So after 20secs the might pill effect is gone, does the might seed 3mins duration still in effect?? Or does it also override its time durration as well?? And have to eat a might seed again. Thanks in advance
+Opheliac Dan As MHFU Player I can tell that there is(or better was) a common tactic to kill G-Rank Kirin with just one hit of a GS; using Adrenaline+heroics (back then they did stack :D ) and Powerpill (did boost the attack for just one hit, but I might be wrong on that) and of course everything else you could find, such as HH and preferably a gunner to put kirin asleep for better aim and so...
That last bit, Critical Eye +X and Ruthlessness (Weakness Exploit and Critical eye +2) do NOT in fact, stack. It seems to work like Honed Blade and the other Attack Up skills how you can override it, but you need to get the next level of it to do so. Then again this video is on attack, not affinity.
I really like how I found these out on my own without the internet but its nice to hear a very detailed explanation on stacking buffs thanks for the video Gaijin!
Gaijin: "For a powertalon all you need is a Deviljho Talon and a mega demondrug" me: * *looks at my VERY low tier armor after friend committed massive armor selling spree* * Sounds fairly easy to me...
Awesome video as always! I have a question though... Somewhere on your blog (it's killing me because I can't find it) you mentioned that there's a point where having affinity boosts is better than attack boosts on average. Specifically, there's a specific raw damage amount where the Critical Eye skill is better than an Attack Up skill of the same level. Because I can't find it and I know you're a busy man, I'll go do the calculations and post it here.
Woah. Okay, so I might be off a little but it looks like you need to have a raw of 400 just for a critical eye skill to be EQUAL to an Attack Up skill of exactly the same. And my most powerful HBG with limiter removed, power barrel, charm/talon/food boost comes to a raw of 423. Attack Up L then gives a raw of 443 while Critical Eye 3 gives an average raw of 444. So it's a 1 raw difference, and that's based on chance. Though, I could be missing something. Like sharpness, seeing as my calculations are based on the fact that I'm primarily a gunner. Think you can clear the air?
I use demon drug in every single hunt (Unless I'm gunning, where I used Mega Dash juice instead). I'd use Mega's but they're pretty expensive to be using every hunt. Still though +5 on top of the charms is still good! I also always carry a demon horn and often use it when some one is mounting the monster.
A small summary at the end would have been nice, there are way too many groups. Still, thanks for the info, i shall apply it to MH 3U since i only have the wii u.
Thank you so much. I had made hbg set with ruthlessness, pierce up, recoil + 1 and AUXL and was wondering if this was the most damage I can do. Now I realize that I can still get more damage. I'll try to put either peak performance or challenger + 2 and go down to AUM. Thanks
my gunner set got prudence but somehow also get latent power because of my charm... but i still use that charm because it got trajectory.. so it might be a little awkard if you hunt with me as a gunner lol
While this is easy to remember, I wish they could have just made the weaker damage buff skill grey out like they do with some skills that don't activate.
I've been getting into the habit of bringing Might Seeds into my hunts that I then consume during downtimes like mounts or waiting for the monster to change area. I especially bring these against Gogmazios, I've found. Shaves that much time off the hunt. You didn't say if there's a time limit on the Demon Shot. At least, it's not clear to me. Is there? I guess it would be the same as the Demon Horn/Might Seed? '180 is almost a full lifebar' Uhh, Gaijin, a full lifebar is 150. 180 is MORE than a full lifebar. Hence why I don't like this skill. Now, I don't think it's that horrible to have two of these non-stacking skills on the same set. I mean, Latent Power is only so useful, sure, but it's a skill that's REALLY common on armour pieces all around, so it's easy to get without even meaning to. But yes, if you have Challenger+2, don't go investing into Latent Power or Peak Performance unless it just happens to be that way or you literally have nothing else you can invest in. Final note, I get you're not gonna make a video on the defense side, but is there perhaps some way I can find a list? I honestly am kinda curious on some of the details and if there's any certain differences. And for fun: Powercharm +6 Powertalon +9 Mega Demondrug +7 Might Pill +25 Felyne Booster +3 AuXL +25 Challenger+2 +25 Total: +100 Felyne Heroics +35% Horn AUL song +15% Fortitude +20% Total +70% Good lord, that is ridiculous. Extremely unlikely and demanding, sure, but I think it's possible, and I find that hilarious. It's stupid how much you can boost your attack. So let's say you have a weapon with a base true raw of 300. If I understand things right, then it would first go up to 400, then the 70% modifier would apply raising it up to 680 true raw. Right? Oh my god, that is ridiculous. ...By the way, another thought crossed my mind. The Insect Glaive triple up is seperate from these groups, right? Because I do believe that's another 25%. So... uhh... again, IF I'm understanding this correctly, instead of 680, A Glaive of base 300 raw could reach... 780 raw. I actually kind of really hope I'm calculating this wrong because that is ludicrous.
+Laggalot101 And don't forget honing for attack, because that's still separate from these groups too. So hone a glaive for attack, get the nectar, have the stars align and get all of these and you're gonna see some serious shit. Suddenly I want to make a set that makes use of these skills.
Sand Katze I hadn't actually looked at specific glaive, I just was thinking of a good number for a high-end raw-focussed weapon. Didn't realize the Bounding Dalamadur fit the category so perfectly until I looked at the list of glaives again on Kiranico. But yes, that is some glorious DPS. Realistically though, I doubt one would be able to maintain Felyne Heroics without playing super extra careful. Even Adrenaline+2 is still pretty demanding.
+Laggalot101 Yeah, I'm way too careful to rely on Felyne Heroics. I prefer permanent buffs or something like Challenger, so I can maintain my aggressive playstyle.
That's why I think somehow Rajang Armor is quite stupid, wasting point in both Latent Power and Challenger I mean, just have one of those and give another skill is totally more useful.
one point you forgot to mention and I don't know if someone already covered it, but, Critical Eye is grouped as well. Ruthlessness and Critical Eye +1,2,3,God are all apart of the same group. They do not stack.
I disagree on challenger being the best attack skill. AuXL is better in that every hit will be boosted. Yes even though you get the 20% affinity, that just means 1 in 5 hits will be actually doing more damage. So basically you get AuXL for 80% of the time the monster is in rage. Though it does have an advantage of only needing 15 points so it's arguably better in that respect but damage wise in the long run, AuXL will most likely do more damage. And of course get both if you can.
I like it because it can be paired with honed blade and thus also razor sharp. Attack up XL would require the traditional sharpness+1 and razor sharp is very hard to activate with it, so In the end they are very similar damage output
+Poorproplayer Assume some random weapon with 300 true raw and no affinity. Challenger +2 gives you 25 more true raw and a 20% affinity boost, which works out to (300 + 25) * (1 + 0.20 / 4) = ~341 true raw while active. But most monsters aren't enraged all of the time. So assuming it's enraged 70% of the time, the weighted average works out to (341 * 0.7) + (300 * 0.3) = ~329 true raw. That's a bigger boost than AuXL all of the time. For monsters that aren't enraged much of the time (like Zinogre) there are better options, but Challenger +2 is one of the best for those that are.
+Poorproplayer what about Dual Blades??? You know that Dual Blades do have a mechanic that make every hit after the first hit critical if the first hit in that flurry was a crit. For example Demon Dance will be ALL crits if the first hit was a critical, so that means 11 crits. Dual Blades proc Crits better than any other weapon other than maybe the bowguns with affinity and pierce. Another example is i have a relic dual blade with 406 damage, purple sharpness, and 45 percent affininty and 180 para. With Challenger +2 It is a beast in combat with the screen filled with big red crits.
I know Challenger is more popular than Latent Power, but I've been toying around trying to find a set that can make the Rusted Kushala weapons work (specifically the SnS because it has a lot of purple). Since Latent Power +2 would easily surpass the negative affinity that the weapon has, would it be a better choice to go with that, or should I try for Challenger +2 and Critical God? I feel like just having Latent Power +2 would leave room for more skills, but it also takes a while to activate.
The latent power boost is actually very good, the only problem is the more you use, the less it activates. Like, if you hit harder, hunts will be shorter, and less stamina consumption, you'll block/evade more. If really want to use the Rusted Kushala SnS, Crit God+Challenger is the way to go.
Matteus Silvestre Welp, I guess I gotta hope for a godly charm. My goal was to get Challenger +2, Crit God, Razor Sharp, and Ice Attack +2 (+3 isn't possible), and I don't think I have a charm that can get me everything. If it comes down to it, I''ll just give up the Ice Attack +2 until I can get a good enough charm.
+RandomNPC well something with 13 points is possible and i get them quite often tbh... just not for what i want (kinda a lie, got 4 of em wich are really useful)
fyi in mhgen. this is all still true but the food buffs give u for ex. atk L. it does stack with mega demon drug. power charm and talon. and might seed. personally I do this and I get 220 raw on my dual blades. also I got 240 dragon
Hey! Not sure if you read comments, but I've been playing MHGenU and this info is useful (assuming it's all relatively unchanged.) I did have a question: the red attack boost bubbles that Mizutsune drops sometimes, are those their own special case thing, or will they overwrite my might seed or something? Just curious, since it's the only thing I can think of that you left out of this video.
So how does this all work with weapon-specific boosts? I'm mostly asking since I'm trying to figure out how to optimize my Long Sword damage, and the Spirit buffs seem to kinda be in their own weird camp.
After using the Power Pill, does the power seed effect dissapear aswell as the pill effect (which dissapears after 30secs)..or it will stay for 3 min even if you use a pill?
where does red kinsect juice fit into this? and i'm assuming that power phials, super charged CBs, and spirit buffs are all in a category of their own?
The Mighty Pickle Rex not exactly, but it does say that weapon related damage buffs like kinsect juice are in a different category all together, so yes they stack.
Does group c still apply to mhgen because I've noticed that felyne skills do not show up as buffs anymore, which leads me to believe that it does not interfere with demon drugs.
I meant to ask this earlier but, in MHX the skill for the charge blade where you add extra phials to the weapon, is there any indication that you could stack that skill and maybe get 10 phails at one point or maybe even more? For that matter, can certain skills for the other weapons be stacked too? Apologies if this was asked already.
Hey Gaijin hunter, I read a reddit thread on Critical eye 3 vs Attack Up L that critical eye is only useful on raws of ~300 or more, so they all suggested attack up L as the better skill. But I was thinking, if you are consistent with attack bonus stacking for fights, wouldn't the increase in raw be such that critical eye 3 is the better skill to go for?
I know I'm 6 years late but I have a question about Group J. I know that once Challenger kicks in Peak Performance will be cancelled but while the monster is not raging and I'm at full health will my Peak Performance active and once the monster starts to rage Challenger will activate and once the monster stop raging and I'm at full health Peak Performance will activate again? I know many won't have this combination if it works, but I like weird skill combos like that 😅
So my raw is 1638 ÷ 5.2 = 456, and if I eat a meda demon drug my raw is 463, Im really confused. REALLY CONFUSED * head explodes * So eating a mega demon drug isnt a 'must-have'?
What is the duration of those other attack boosting skills/buffs? You didn't put anything so I would assume they're permanent for the whole hunt but just to be safe... I want to ask. :D
so, lets take the Cera Cymmetry GS. It has the highest Raw Damage of all the Greatswords i know and thats 320 true Base attack. now lets stack all the buffs upon it (imagening you can build an armor set with all these skills, what would be impossible in the game without hacking, and all the foodbuffs too) and look what happens: (320+6+9+7+25+3+25+25=420) ( 35%+ 15%+20%=70%) *interessting: all numeric buffs combined are exactly 100 (420/100 x 70) = 294 420+294 = 714 true raw attack! The factor for GS is 4.8, so this means: 714 x 4.8 = 3427,2 raw attack power!!! wow... I found that raw damage could go up to 360 on relic weapons so, that would mean the following: 360+100= 460 460/100x70= 322 460+320= 780 x 4.8= 3744 maximum possible raw damage on a Greatsword.
Amm, i know its not the same game, yet i would like to know if this groups are present in some way in monster hunter world? or are there diferent groups to take in consideration in world?
All the mega demondrugs I've wasted after getting felyne atk up L...

Online or offline? Online I've beaten him in a little over five minutes with an IG user that has rodeo god and a good team.
meat + milk is the bombaider.... guess wat meat combination gave u ?
thanks this was really helpful since I use a lot of attack up skills and now I know how effective they are
please include a group with ig. it would be nice to inform players on the fact that it stacks as well
A small summary at the end would have been nice, there are way too many groups.
Challenger+2 already gave more attack then attack L in 3G/3U.
Did you stream you learning LS on twitch? It's not in your past broadcasts and I would of loved to watch it, with it being my fave weapon
wow... this was incredibly helpful
"180 is like almost a full health bar." Uh yea max health is 150 so i think you might just need that potion.
I wouldn't have to worry about wasting points with Rajang armor because you're pretty much going to have some buff the entire fight.
No idea there are so many stuff running behind scene. Thanks!
While this is easy to remember, I wish they could have just made the weaker damage buff skill grey out like they do with some skills that don't activate.
Me: atk up XL, M Demondrug, eats for heroics. My friend has a hunting horn.
Don't forget the might seed!
And for fun:
Powercharm +6
Powertalon +9
Mega Demondrug +7
Might Pill +25
Felyne Booster +3
AuXL +25
Challenger+2 +25
Total: +100
Felyne Heroics +35%
Horn AUL song +15%
Fortitude +20%
Total +70%
Good lord, that is ridiculous.
+diortem emirp And don't forget bonus damage from Poison or Blast element. Time to hone my Bounding Dalamadur!
Lux Sandre Uhh, yes, I already had that listed.
That's why I think somehow Rajang Armor is quite stupid, wasting point in both Latent Power and Challenger
I mean, just have one of those and give another skill is totally more useful.
one point you forgot to mention and I don't know if someone already covered it, but, Critical Eye is grouped as well. Ruthlessness and Critical Eye +1,2,3,God are all apart of the same group. They do not stack.
@:13:39 A full Garuga armor set has critical eye by default.
+gaijin hunter which effect will be activated AuL or Honed Blade if im forced to run both cuz of my armour and charm
I feel like just having Latent Power +2 would leave room for more skills, but it also takes a while to activate.
challenger+2 >>>>>> latent power+2
The latent power boost is actually very good, the only problem is the more you use, the less it activates. Like, if you hit harder, hunts will be shorter, and less stamina consumption, you'll block/evade more. If really want to use the Rusted Kushala SnS, Crit God+Challenger is the way to go.
Matteus Silvestre
Welp, I guess I gotta hope for a godly charm.
How do you get demondrug?
fyi in mhgen. this is all still true but the food buffs give u for ex. atk L. it does stack with mega demon drug. power charm and talon. and might seed. personally I do this and I get 220 raw on my dual blades. also I got 240 dragon
What about the buff from the kinsect when using the Insect Glaive? Is that buff independent too and there for stacks?
wow... i always thought demon drug and power seed is in same group, and i always bring demondrugs but not the seeds....
my whole life is a lie........
Hey @gaijin_hunter , i have a question. Does the armor skill "amplify" and "arcana" stack( more precisly, does the "elemental attack up" stack?)
So how does this all work with weapon-specific boosts? I'm mostly asking since I'm trying to figure out how to optimize my Long Sword damage, and the Spirit buffs seem to kinda be in their own weird camp.
Question: if I have a might seed active and I use a might pill, will my might seed still be active at the end of the pill duration?
I believe he said the strongest overwrites. So, you lose the duration of might seed. I've never tested it, though.
That was apparently a 3u glitch, but I'm pretty sure 4u and Gen have the pill's time overwrite the seed's
Are you planning on uploading a video covering the information capcom released on october first?
What category does punishing draw's attack boost fall into?
Your videos are so helpful. Thank you!
+Julien Pineda thanks!
gaijin hunter how do u make a mega deamondrug
After using the Power Pill, does the power seed effect dissapear aswell as the pill effect (which dissapears after 30secs)..or it will stay for 3 min even if you use a pill?
where does red kinsect juice fit into this? and i'm assuming that power phials, super charged CBs, and spirit buffs are all in a category of their own?
+The Mighty Pickle Rex watch the linked video on how physical damage works in the description.
TheMike0088 but does the video explain how kinsect juice stacks?
The Mighty Pickle Rex not exactly, but it does say that weapon related damage buffs like kinsect juice are in a different category all together, so yes they stack.
+The Mighty Pickle Rex Pretty sure that juice is an independent group. Would be quite silly otherwise.
What about the mushroom with Mushroomancer? They are in a different category? For example: might seed, demondrug and mushroom stacks?
But I was thinking, if you are consistent with attack bonus stacking for fights, wouldn't the increase in raw be such that critical eye 3 is the better skill to go for?
how does the +% buffs stacks together ?
dmg * (1+ 15%) * (1+ 25% )
or
dmg * (1+ 15% + 25%)
or some complex mix ?
legendary gajin hunter
Is there an armor skill stacking system like this in MHW (ICEBORNE)? I've searched everywhere but nobody talks about this...
this is a really good video. thanks gh!
If Critical Eye is independent. Does it stack with Brutality?
I wasn't aware the charms weren't consumable
@gaijin hunter: This concept still applies to MHGen right?
Demon S is another category too.
I know many won't have this combination if it works, but I like weird skill combos like that 😅
What about nitroshroom with mushroomancer skill? Does it stack with demondrug/might seed?
So my raw is 1638 ÷ 5.2 = 456, and if I eat a meda demon drug my raw is 463, Im really confused. REALLY CONFUSED * head explodes * So eating a mega demon drug isnt a 'must-have'?
What is the duration of those other attack boosting skills/buffs?
You didn't put anything so I would assume they're permanent for the whole hunt but just to be safe... I want to ask. :D
so, lets take the Cera Cymmetry GS. It has the highest Raw Damage of all the Greatswords i know and thats 320 true Base attack. now lets stack all the buffs upon it (imagening you can build an armor set with all these skills, what would be impossible in the game without hacking, and all the foodbuffs too) and look what happens:
(320+6+9+7+25+3+25+25=420) ( 35%+ 15%+20%=70%)
*interessting: all numeric buffs combined are exactly 100
(420/100 x 70) = 294
420+294 = 714 true raw attack!
The factor for GS is 4.8, so this means:
714 x 4.8 = 3427,2 raw attack power!!! wow...
I found that raw damage could go up to 360 on relic weapons
so, that would mean the following:
360+100= 460
460/100x70= 322
460+320= 780 x 4.8= 3744 maximum possible raw damage on a Greatsword.
Then did i makle a mistake?
+WH40KHero They were probably using a relic GS.
Well, or i forgot to put in weapon honing
+WH40KHero did you include the skill that increases damage if you die?
I did
i included the strongest effects of every damage group
Just to be certain, the Demon Horn item effect is the same one that Palicos can use, right?
There was an error. when you used the might pill, you said +15
Amm, i know its not the same game, yet i would like to know if this groups are present in some way in monster hunter world?
or are there diferent groups to take in consideration in world?
Great video man, love it.
Was I the only one shocked to see a seregios weapon with a HB set ? :p
jk nice vid and thank you :D
Super late to the party, but does all of this apply to Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate?
MHX Felyne Heroics + Bushido Master... what has cience done
Sorry if this has already been asked, but do you know how long Latent Power lasts?
