I don't use wax rings....I use the silicone wax ring alternative from Korky (other brands also exist now). Wax ring is too unforgiving. If the installer screwed up the alignment and just seated the toilet anyway, then just a matter or time before a leak develops. Repaired wife's sister's toilet.....they had a leak streaming down out of their ceiling into the kitchen right down onto the countertop and stove....when I came to look at it, my fears were realized. It was their toilet water when the kids would flush. Pulled toilet and it was caused by an incorrectly seated toilet onto the wax ring. The silicone cushioned replacements are forgiving. If you incorrectly place the toilet and you have to move it or adjust it after seating it the first time, you pick it up and it springs right back up. They are also stackable for flanges that are below the floor if necessary. Have had a stacked pair under the toilet in my master bath that I redid over 6 years ago and a single under a toilet in bath I redid 5 years ago and have had no issues. And I do support your caulking the toilet but I typically use clear 100% silicone so that it is not as noticeable but I also mask the floor so that I ensure the caulk job has no smears or overages on the floor that I don't like seeing. I don't see it as an extra safeguard for the wax ring....I see its use as an extra safeguard to keep the toilet in place especially when larger people are in your family or friends group. Also, ALL guys don't have the best aim, this prevents any misdirected piss from getting UNDER the toilet and keep your newly renovated bathroom from having a scent of your your wife's favorite wax burner scent mixed with a hint of piss smell that you don't know where it is coming from.
The best way I get wax rings off is using a old Walmart or home depot bag. that way it’s less mess and you can tie it up and throw it in the old toilet bowl after your done!
22 year floor installer here. I've had so many people buy a new toilet because they knew i was pulling their old one to replace the floor. They get mad when i tell them that the new toilet needs to be assembled and I can't guarantee that i won't crack the porcelain or that i won't assemble correctly and there will be a water leak and wreck the flooring. I'm a floor installer not a toilet assembler.
yelp that exact method i used when i had to install toilets or reset toilets at the apartment complex i worked at. Also don't forgot to have the trash bag right under it. because fuck those wax rings suck to wipe of anything.
Absolutely hate silicone sealed toilets it hides a problem and creates wood rot if a wax seal is ever to fail not necessarily due to the plumber not to mention makes it difficult to replace with a different shape toilet removing the old silicone. The only time I see silicone being an option is on a slab and that's customer requested
One of my jobs is at a place with 180 toilets. All different brands, but very often I'll find tanks with loose tank bolts, but the tank still doesn't leak. Most of the new tank bolts are garbage, they are the wrong metals for the job. If there's oil in the pipe dope, it may not be compatible with the foam rubbrr gasket - it'sa possibility to consider. .

You were smart to also replace the plastic pull - on / off valve shown in the beginning, I know someone that had one of those and it flooded his house.
Man could've replaced the flapper himself for less than 30 bucks, spent considerably more for a whole new toilet... Sometimes I find myself wondering if I ended up in the wrong trade lol
My bolts and flange rusted out and I took the toilet off and installed a new flange, bolts and wax ring for about $15 after the plumber had come by and said $450, I politely said no but wanted to tell him to go F himself, plumbers charge like they're surgeons with a doctors degree.

@@replumb i’ve seen em , think fluidmaster makes some … in all honesty your still better off with the metal ones , not only will they not crack , but no stripping threads either… 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for the info! I’ve been doing my own fill valves etc. while unscrewing my water supply line today, I notice the plastic nut; I thought it was strange that what I thought was an integral part of the toilet, was plastic!! Might be time to change that up too, but at least keep an eye on it.
I don’t dope my ferrules the manufactures doesnt require it. I’ve never had a leak on it. Also I used to dope the tank to bowl gasket when I was a helper for a tech that swore by it, but as a technician I don’t anymore.

Not trying to be one of your voices but its possible the warranty is on the water damage that it would cause, i know thats how wirsbo works. That being said i doubt that would have that kind of warranty lol. Keep up the good work!!
I work for a plumbing shop that’s been around since 1978 and the thought of using extra wax rings is a cardinal sin to them. The “hey boy that flange is below finished flooring”. If I can reset a toilet with a flange below a finished floor and know it won’t leak because the wax is adequate enough, I’m all for it. It saves my reoccurring customer money, me time and a headache. There’s no need for that when we have manufacturers that have products that can do what we need them to do.
Quick question. When installing the wax ring, do you put down with pressure to get it seated or do you just tighten the bolts on the side and it’ll set itself. Going to be replacing my wax ring since my toilet is leaking. Just wanted to know.
Better to raise that flange so that if the wax fails you won't get poop dripping down the ceiling below. It's not about the height of the wax, it's about the wax ring failing.
Never noticed that before, but you're from East Coast New Jersey maybe. Started noticing a lot of things to do with the same things. I taught people 30 years ago.
