Great thorough instructions without being overbearing. Video was just as good. You could clearly see every aspect of the job. I’m doing this job this weekend. Thanks for posting.
@@R.Akerman-oz1tf they are just bolts in slots that are in the throat of the drain. Real easy to remove if toilet is not there. Match bolt at hardware store and you are done.
Took out my toilet and found a 50 year old flange that was part of the down pipe. Plumber gave estimate of $1,200 'cuz it had to be cut from the condo below, pulled up and replaced. Saw this video and one other used two wax rings. So that's what I did to solve the problem and give me peace of mind. THANKS!
Same exact issue here as my house is 75 years old. I came here to see how to switch out the wax ring as the plumber suggested doubling up the ring and I was pleasantly surprised to see it done in this video.
Hey, this was very easy to follow and understand! No nonsense, not overly detailed but not lacking anything. The camera work was spot on, and I know it can be difficult to keep the camera in the right spot for these kinds of videos. Good work and thank you for it!
Thank you for this video!!! Have been dealing with a sewer gas leak over a year, multiple plumbers and huge payout. Finally saw the toilet unseated and the ring looks new. Looks like I'll be DIYing two wax rings. Thank you also to others who commented they do this all the time.
Thanks tons, 71 year old lady here, you made it clear and simple without talking forever. Tomorrow is my go for it day and now with tons more confidence, I can do this👍
you are the best kind of professional...i'm not a "professional" bike mechanic but i have cycle toured about 100,000 miles and have had to fix everything on the bike multiple times. i have found many "non-standard" ways to repair problems that work far better than the advertised solutions. now i have to go fix my mother's wax seal on her condo toilet.
DOUBLE WAX RING FOR THE WIN!!! Our flange sits lower than the floor in the house we just bought (didn't notice the toilet was leaking on to the concrete subfloor until after we moved in). Your idea to stack the rings was genius! I put a standard ring over an XL flange ring and have flushed a couple dozen times now with no leaks. Also agree with not calking the toilet. Thanks much, your video was very helpful❤
I always recommended my guys to take two wax rings. They are necessary when there is a tile floor, because the mud and tile will give the flooring a little lift and the toilet will not sit right. ✌🏼
Just got mine done successfully thanks to this video, I didn't have to double up the rings since the bathroom floor is linoleum instead of tile but not a bad idea at all, thanks for the great video, easy to follow and concise and right to the point
Thank you for the double wax ring tip! Helped a lot. Put new flooring in, and it didn't occur to me that that extra height caused my issue. You deserve to wear a cape. 😂
Watching this video not knowing what I’m doing. Bought two wax rings just in case and now look, using both to fix my leaky toilet. Great video. Thank you
Helped my land lady fix my toilet in a baement appmt. Sadly th esubfloor wood was rotted away so we had t osuspend the anchor bolts, so I bought an extra set. After that it was teamwork and cleaning. Thank you for the video! The help is muchly appreciated.
Thank you!! Followed your guide and it worked perfectly for me. One note is that my flange was sitting ON TOP of the tile (not flush or sunken under), about 1/2 inch raised above the tile - and I only used a single ring. Hopefully it all holds!!

If doubling up the wax rings keeps it from leaking then score. I've got to replace one as soon as I get home going extra thick this time The toilet does not have a proper flange. Watching your video gave me some confidence thanks man
Just started using the fluidmaster no wax toilet rings. Have replaced 2 so far in our hotel. They work pretty good. Havnt had any issues yet. Thanks for the videos
Thanks a lot for uploading this. I just used it and replaced the wax ring seal myself. We found that there was some leakage occurring although minimal and it smelled like pee in the bathroom all the time. The guess is that when the contractor installed the vinyl flooring they didn't seal that wax ring or use a new one which caused some minor leaking. Hopefully it works. Was pretty disgustoid getting the old one out and trying to clean up the old wax a bit.
hey thanks, I have one that's leaking and was about to replace it and thought I'd watch a couple videos first just in case, and glad I did because I don't think I would have thought of the 2-rings idea. I'm betting tile height is the issue with my leaker.
Me being European: Where is my wax ring? Also why do Yanks use these wax rings. We are in closer proximity to Germans and they developed superior rubber thing. Gotta love these guys.
I have been in that predicament the closet was a 1/2 inch below the floor they had hard wood floor added to the bathroom the people did the floor had no idea they needed to raise the closet height for the wax ring . I used a box cutter added just the wax without the funnel . I had a Journeymen in plumbing in the late 80s . old cast pipe your not going to move without a lot of work , to pick up 1/2 inch .
I've heard of using two rings before and since only one side was working I could see why. I live in Fresno in an apartment and every two years or so I smell the toilet and I don't know why it's failed for the fourth or fifth time and this time I'm doing it because the maintenance guy is on vacation and I can't stand the smell for another week. Any suggestions? Thanks 😊
I use extra thick if I can and only if the flange is too low to the ground which happens when flooring workers set toilets. I work in a multi family setting
Inspect down pipe for cracks. If the flange is toast where the bolts go, you'll have to replace or at least rig the flange. Use a wrench or at least an adjustable wrench, tighten carefully. Check for rocking, use plastic shims where necessary.

how often do you have to change those type?
Does the wax go bad on those like do they become brittle ?
I feel confident that I can do that! Do you caulk around the vase of the toilet?
If I have my caulking gun, just leave the back of the toilet open
Way to go Dave. Thanks for the video. Double wax seals.....I need to remember that.
❤❤₩₩😅99😅0p,
As a plumber for 20 years, I would not recommend stacking wax seals. While it works sometimes, they can skip and block the drain or can leak.

You shouldn’t ever caulk around a toilet. If it leaks you may never know until it’s too late.
@@theyack53 if the house is built on a concrete slab, and the toilet is on ground floor, it shouldn't be a disaster if you caulk around the toilet.

No torque wrench. Just remember, flange underneath is plastic, don't over tight. If there is no moving while tightening that's good enough.
