BEFORE & AFTER: How to Install a Toilet Yourself - Thrift Diving

  • The wall stencil in this bathroom can be found here: bit.ly/pretty-s... (affiliate link). Our toilet was too small and short and I wanted to install a toilet that was higher and at a more comfortable height. Removing and installing a toilet is an easy DIY project that a homeowner can do in 1-2 hours (or less) by themselves, depending on the weight of the toilet. Watch this video and learn how to make your toilet installation go smoothly. A big thanks for American Standard for sponsoring the complimentary toilet for this tutorial!
    ****NOTE: In the video, I caulked the toilet. I have not caulked other toilets, but I decided to caulk this one per instructions in a Handyman article that suggested it. Many have noted NOT to caulk so that leaks can easily be detected. I would agree now, years later, that I would likely not caulk again. Skip the caulk. And there have been no leaks, by the way. ;)

    pro tip: leave an uncaulked space around both sides of the flange area to spot leaks early.. since this one is caulked all the way around, it will contain any water and likely cause premature mildew, mold, decay and rot in flooring and subfloor

    A helpful tip: Should've replaced the angle stop (water valve @ the wall) because it's most likely as old as your last toilet and that rubber washer inside *will* deteriorate on you over time, meaning the next time you need to shut the water off, you won't be able to. You don't want that kind of angle stop, you want to get the quarter turn kind which use a ball valve to stop the flow, no rubber washer needed. You have the compression type which, if you get lucky, can be replaced by unscrewing the valve from the nut and fitting a new valve in it's place. All in all, you did a fantastic job for your first time, even though the caulking was a bit preempted. Good job.

    Hi I'm a plumber by trade . Here are some tips that will help . The plastic washers you used with the bolts are as good as trash use a metal washer and nut instead itll hold the bolt firmly in place while setting toilet and bolts can be used as a guide to centering toilet and you lower it onto flange and make pulling the toilet much easier in the future. I use wax rings with collars if the flange is to low I use a jumbo wax . I also press and twist wax ring firmly against flange . I dont usually coulk a toilet but if I do its after I have set it and I use bath and tub with ( easy water clean up ) thats important . Also i use smart caps when securing toilet to the flange , they come with disk like washers you set then the metal washer then the nut no cutting needed cap just screws right on no mess to clean up .

    An even better reason to caulk after setting toilet is the possible leaks. I know we all sit the toilet perfectly on the wax ring, but just in case it didn't get sat correctly allowing a leak, better to wait a few days before caulking to see if any water seeps out. If caulked at time of placing toilet any leaked water would be trapped and not allowed to run out on floor. On a concrete floor might not be a big problem, but with a wood floor there's the possibility of rot latter on.

    Very well done!! I love your vids! You make everything look easy. The only thing I would change is the caulk. I don't ever caulk the bottom of toilets. The reason is because how would you know if it is leaking once you caulk it. Think about it. If you seal the bottom and it is leaking then the water will just destroy everything below the toilet and you wouldn't know till it was too late.

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  5 років тому +2

      I agree with you, Matt. I typically do it that way as well, but after reading the article, I tried a different way, where it says that the caulk actually helps with creating a better seal and helping to prevent rocking, which could cause leaks. I am planning to take a plumbing class for my carpentry program at my comm college and this is something I'm looking forward to getting the instructor's opinion on. I agree with you, though. At least, caulking early would prevent you from knowing for sure if there is a leak. However, the instructions for the toilet also recommended putting the sealant on the bottom edge. So it's a toss up! Lol

Seeing you someone who looks like me do what you do has inspired me to know I can do it too. Thank you so much for picking up a camera and documenting your journey. Thank you so much for sharing with us your story. Much love and many blessings to you from Philly.

  • @watermenplumbingfiltration144

    Wax rings are generally inferior. Good job.
    Quick tip. Always fasten the bolts to the flange, so they don't move when placing the toilet over the gasket. Also, many toilets are not friendly to fastening the tank to the bowl from the front.

    If you hire a "plumber" and he caulks around the toilet. Fire him!!! Never caulk around the toilet. If it rocks you need a thicker wax ring or may need to adjust the flange height.

      Even I know you should, you do NOT want all different kinds of mold to start growing under your toilet because of water, chemicals and over bacteria getting under the toilet. The same thing applies for the tub, especially the tub of you think about it, all that water, makes me cringe thinking how much mold those can create

    I might as well add my experiences. I tried the rubber gaskets, and unless all the stars are lined up correctly, they usually will not fit correctly. Stick with the wax rings; they always work.
    Another way to make the installation bolts stand up straight is to put a washer and nut on the bolt on the top side of the flange.
    Everyone is correct about never caulking the toilet because a leak will damage your house before you know about it.
    Also, replace the water supply line with the very best quality one with metal mesh on the outside. Our neighbor had the plastic nut on his water supply line break while they were gone on vacation and it created over $100,000 in damages.
    It only takes 5 minutes to remove the tank and the toilet is easier to handle with the tank off.
    And finally, this is not an easy or quick job unless everything goes perfectly. Expect problems.

    • @williameddy2826
      @williameddy2826 5 років тому

      up2meable- Watch 3-4 videos on installing toilets and you can do this job yourself . Some DIY jobs are actually very difficult but this is NOT one of them . The hardest part is " sitting " the toilet on those vertical bolts . Get some help with that part . Many houses have 2-4 toilets . Worse case scenario , hire a " handyman " to supervise the job you are doing on one of them , then use your knowledge and experience in the future on the rest.
