There is a version of - Sisters are Doing it For Themselves, with Annie and Aretha 👍 absolutely epic. Please check it. 😊
Please check out Lyrical Joe Street Prophets ft AQ 😊🔥🔥🔥
Black Sabbath "Wizard."
Yes it is a dark song. It was written about how the music industry chews up new artists but keep them hooked with dreams of hitting it big.
5.5 minite boring intro to then listen to less then 15 seconds before yawn yawn yawn
Annie Lennox is a shapeshifter kinda like David Bowie was. Always evolving, always different and ALWAYS exquisitely artistic and dramatic. She's still doing it, too.
Also, 40 years later and this song is just so timeless it's insane. Still sounds fresh in some ways.
How about the Freddie Mercury tribute concert where Annie and David sang "Under Pressure". they were so close together Annie could have picked David's pocket.
@@brianmiller1077I love this live performance of Annie & Bowie, exquisite.
@@brianmiller1077such an amazing performance! Annie Lennox is exquisite!
I've never met anyone who dislikes this song. An all-time great synth riff layered with sublime vocals. Absolute banger.
Usually right after I meet someone, I immediately ask, "Do you like Sweet Dreams by The Eurythmics?" Pretty standard..
Even my own father likes this song, and he doesn't approve of much of anything.
There were tons of DJ mixes in the late 90's/2000's at dance clubs in DC. There was a good one by Scott Henry that got spun a lot. (Scott Henry is DC legend)
met her years ago and basically said
my parents allows play your music and I'm so glad they did
timeless / nice lady to boot
AYE ARE WE GOING OLD POP NOW, You gotta do some Depeche Mode. Man. Policy of Truth, Never Let Me Down Again, World in My Eyes, Personal Jesus, Sacred, etc.
Dépêche mode is God tier. I should listen to them more
Yeah, totally agree.
Policy of Truth!
Not enough reactors do depeche mode and it's practically criminal. Such an amazing band
They should totally cover “People Are People”!
Her solo "walking on broken glass" was always my favorite
I love that one and also "Why"
@@ozarklisa1199 Also "Here Comes the Rain Again"
That's one of my favorite solo songs of hers, too. I also really like "No More I Love You's".
@@TennSeven I have to say that keyboard rhythm of "Walking On Broken Glass" REALLY makes that song!!!
@@meteach1 ...now stuck in my head. 😂👍
Listen to: Here comes the rain again, Would I lie to you, This city never sleeps Annie's voice NEVER disappoints & Dave is superb 💯
Here Comes The Rain Again Unplugged is amazing!
Yesssss
Yes! Here Comes the Rain Agin goes so hard!
I'm a dyed in the wool metal head. And have been since the early 80's. But I love this song. I always have since the day it dropped. Good damn song.
genres dont matter in the end a cracking song is a cracking song.
same
Same dude. I'm a 80s metal head (voivod, sabbat, Sodom, Kreator, yadda yadda...) this is just a great tune
The ? then becomes: What'd u think of Marilyn Manson's cover? I believe it's 1 of the greatest covers ever done.
@@JoeVideoed, for what ut is I agree. Although I was never much of a Marilyn Manson fan.
Her duet of Queen’s Under Pressure with David Bowie at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert is iconic!
I have no idea why that performance isn't more referenced. It's so epic. Only Annie could play the part of Freddie quite that way.
Agreed!
I haven't heard that but I'm going to rectify that immediately!
@@j.f.fisher5318 even her makeup during the performace is iconic. Pretty sure they replayed it a lot on MTV back then.
Annie Lennox's live performance of "Why” from 2000 is one of my favorite live vocal performances of all time. Worth checking out, it's breathtaking.
Yess
@@pennymoss8152 She was transcendant in that performance. What a glorious talent.
is that the VH1 storytellers performance? that gives me goosebumps!
You guys need to review Pet Shop Boys - West end girls.
Its one of the most 80s sounding songs ever.
Alanis Morissette was in grade school when this song came out. Lol. You picked up on the old school R&B influences, which was very deliberate on their part. Their whole artistic vision was to meld American soul and R&B with the icy, electronic aesthetic of British New Wave/synth pop. It was their winning formula.
They'd also go one to collaborate with Aretha Franklin on "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves"
Annie was hugely influenced by American RnB soul singers, Aretha, Cooke, Smokey and Ray Charles.
Their fourth album "Be Youself Tonight" was a straight up soul album that had Stevie Wonder playing harmonica on There Must Be An Angel... and Aretha Franklin singing with them on Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves. Their lead off single Would I Lie To You was one of their best rock-soul songs that had a brass section. Sweet Dreams song was featured prominently in movies like Tron:Legacy, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Ready Player One.
Hell, I didn't find out Annie Lennox was white until I was 12
Love this song and Annie Lenox. She is a powerhouse vocalist. Thanks so much guys for reacting to this one!
Eurythmics were awesome, so many good songs: Who's That Girl?, Missionary Man, Here Comes the Rain Again, Would I Lie to You?, Sexcrime, There Must Be an Angel, Thorn in My Side, etc, etc 🤘
Annie's the pride of Aberdeen! She sang the song in the third Lord of the Rings movie too - beautiful stuff
I def concur! And Annie's contribution to Bram Stoker's Dracula is absolutely magnificent, as well, & so hauntingly beautiful. 🖤🖤
No one will ever hear another voice like this one. Annie Lennox is just unique. I love the "darkness" of this song. It's totally "London Underground" emo punk much like The Smiths, Depeche Mode and The Cure. So good!
Give "Why" a listen. It is a hauntingly beautiful song by Annie. Vocal range is exquisite.
There's a few songs that when they were released hit the scene like a bomb. I would say this song ranks up there with Donna Summer I Feel Love and and Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit in terms of completely changing pop music.
Agreed. No one saw this coming and it just slammed into the minds of everyone who heard it at that time.
One of those "WOW, you've GOT to hear this !!" songs. So, so different.
I could not agree with you more. Seminal track.
Yes! Core memory type of song!
This song is great on its own, but with boosted bass and a good subwoofer, it becomes an incomparable killer.
Yessssss! When I was young(er), we had an early 90s vette with a badass system in it…this song was life changing.
Back in the early (awesome) days of MTV, the Eurythmics releasing a video was a BIG F'ING DEAL. To this day their music brings back vivid memories from decades ago. Also, check out some of Annie's solo work, it is quite good.
This was my high school years. The video of her with a short red haired doo and that voice. When female singers were all about looking “sexy, feminine, rocker chic she blew the doors off the norm and introduced us to a whole new genre. Her solo career deserves as many accolades!! ❤
It's crazy that MTV forced her to sign a statement that she wasn't transsexual.
You need to check out the video too. It was just as iconic as the song. This was when videos on MTV were a bit more produced. Annie's look int he video was unforgettable.
You need to also check out Alison Moyet/Yazoo. All cried out is a amazing song. Another woman with a incredible voice like Annie.
The story of how this song was made, it's iconic keyboard/synth hook, is good too. Annie and Dave dated off and on, but remained friends. They were on tour and ran out of money and things were looking like their dreams were ending. They ended the tour early and went their own ways. Annie and Dave stayed in touch and were experimenting with synths and keyboards. Annie showed Dave one part of the hook and Dave immediately came up with the synth bass line to go along with it. It was basically magic at a time when they weren't sure they were ever going to make it.
Annie Lennox is one of the greats, up there with Grace Jones, Sade, Grace Slick, Siouxsie Sioux.. and Sweet Dreams only gives the listener a taste of how great of a vocalist she is and I think it's just the right amount for this track. Lost in Vegas fans.. can we make a reaction to Sade's "Soldier of Love" a reality?
One of the biggest songs in the history of the world. In 200 years they will call this classic 20th century music. It will keep coming back in style until the sun burns out.
Agreed. And I had NO idea about the 75 million record sales. Well deserved.
"Would I lie to you" is a banger and Annie's voice is spectacular
Yeah - that one is awesome - she kills it.
A lot of early British electronica was very very soul influenced, Tainted Love is literally a cover of a soul song that was popular in the Northern Soul scene, see also Yazoo (Don't Go is an absolute banger).
Some Of The Greatest Lyrics In A Pop Song Ever Written. It Feels Intimate, Worldly, Dangerous. And Annie Looked WILD With That Orange, Shaved Hairdo In The Video.
Friday Night Videos! My 11-year-old eyes popped out of my head when I saw this one. I’m from a small town where we only got three to four channels (depending on the weather) and I never in my life saw anything like Annie Lennox before. So weird, but so awesome. Iconic.
And the men’s suit and tie… iconic
And riding crop in hand
... and that is all Annie Lennox's singing BTW! She has a phenomenal voice. The lead and the backing is all her.
This song is an 80’s anthem!! A big song for runway modeling back in 84. I miss the 80’s!! 🖤
“Here Comes the Rain Again”, “Would I Lie to You”, Missionary Man” are other songs from them to check out.
Annie Lennox did a cover not that long ago of "I Put a Spell On You." Absolute fire.
Wow, what a treat - I wake up on a Saturday morning and get a new reaction video from you guys in my UA-cam feed. Great start to the weekend !
Yeah, we've got a crazy little island for musical talent. Even as a Brit living here, it blows my mind how much really good music comes out of our small band of countries. You're right, this is dope AND a weird sounding song, in C# minor, dark and Orwellian, both the music and the lyrics. All the more so for the time it was released, a year before 1984. Ominous.
That (sequenced?) bass synth line just kicks in and grabs your attention from the opening bar, lurking under the heavenly but cautionary words. Listen to this through a good sound system, the sub bass is SO low!
Nothing remotely like this had been heard, before it came out. Everything about this track was alien, but recognisable and good. Cold hard synths mixed with amazing vocals - Annie's one hell of a singer. And her pronunciation is a little odd to English acclimatised ears, as she's Scottish by birth, hence the this/these similarity.
40 years on, this song still sends a chill down my spine. Just awesome !!
Thanks for another great reaction video guys, you had me cracking up with you in the middle section !
Keep up the great work. Love from Britain to Vegas ! 😀
Annie’s voice is legend. Darkness is just part of life but her voice makes it smooth
Annie did a song with Aretha. "Sisters are doing it for themselves"
The record company didn't want to release this song because it was so dark. Annie wrote the lyric when she thought the Eurythmics were finished. And then 3 other songs from that album started to get some play on MTV, only for American advertisers to freak out, claiming that Annie was a tranny because she dressed in men's suits. She had to produce a f*cking birth certificate to prove she was actually a woman before her music was allowed to be promoted in the Land of the Free. And, yes, you are spot on about the Motown vibe--it's Annie's jam for life.
Annie's look is so striking in this video, I think it helped push the initial interest in this song.
I agree. The sound and also her look pushed this song. I remember loving the sound and how it did not sound like anything else. And she had a great look that intrigued me.
And the surreality of the video as well--the cow walking through the board room...
Funny enough in America it was initially banned because they weren’t sure of her gender because of her androgynous look in the video.
So many great bands from the UK that I don’t think ever broke in America - in no particular order - Madness, Pulp, Squeeze, Stone Roses, Blur, The Jam, The Cure, New Model Army, Oasis. Just some that spring to mind - so many more…..
You should listen to their song featuring Aretha Franklin, Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves.
Yall should get into some 90s punk/Ska!
NOFX,Rancid,Reel Big Fish,Dropkick Murphys,MxPx,Pennywise..
oh man i really want to see them check out streetlight manifesto now!!
I don’t know I think if they are gonna do ska and punk they need to start with U.K. bands/artists from the late 70s and early 80s
They were established in London but very proud that Annie's from the same places as me up in the North East of Scotland. Her mum was friends with my grandmother. We don't have many famous people from my area so I will tell everyone I can!!
I think you guys should do a whole bunch of ‘80’s “New Wave” classics
The video was stunning....she was gorgeous and gender bending. I was 10 yrs old when this came out and I didn't know what Annie Lennox was, but she was slaying the vocals and and then she was freaking fabulous with the red hair and the suit!
Annie Lennox has been one of my favorite artists since I was a kid, she’s the definition of the word Fabulous ✨
The video of Annie singing this is iconic.
I saw the Eurythmics at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. It was INCREDIBLE. I was broken hearted when Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart ended their collaboration. Fortunately Lennox went on to create some great music. She's such a compelling performer.
You guys have no idea what kind of a mind trip it was on that first riff when that song came out ... Mind blown...
I’m in love with the tone of Annie’s voice. This song is mesmerizing.
Marylin Manson does a wicked cover of Sweet Dreams!
As much as I loved the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox's solo career was even better. She had a very bluesy sound in several of her solo songs
Would I Lie To You is a great growly venue for Annie's ethereal voice. She's mad. It's glorious.
Oh it will never happen. They won’t do any of the amazing 80s artists.
'Little Bird' by Annie Lennox would be a great reaction/review. Doesn't get much airtime and similarly haunting as 'Sweet Dreams' but a bit more uplifting as it progresses. Great tune.
Her performance of I Put A Spell On You at the Grammy's a few years back was absolutely Awesome 👌 go check it out everyone if you haven't 😀
When this song came out, it crossed over to all music listener's ,
My favorite part of this reaction is that the "keyboard" break they dig is actually a violin. LOL That's Dave Stewart playing through a distorted chorus effect pedal. Super sound! Hopefully you guys will dig into some other Eurythmics. A very VERY under-rated bands by a lot of people.
It's the tone of the song that leaves you feeling a bit guarded. She has a fantastic voice.
Aw love Annie’s voice classic from Scotland 🏴 ✌️
When this came out it sounded like nothing else out there. Combined with the gender-bending outfit and it was an absolute sensation.
Annie has an amazing voice.
She did a great live duet with Bowie covering Freddy Mercury's part for "Under Pressure".
Eurythmics was/is a great Techno Pop/Rock duo that incorporated various elements of Blues and Soul music into their songs, along with daring provocative themes in their lyrics. Their music videos were cutting-edge and futuristic for its time, and were often thought-provoking. Some hit Eurythmics songs/music videos that both of you might want to react to, are “Love Is A Stranger”, “Here Comes The Rain Again”, “Who’s That Girl?” (not the same song that Madonna recorded), “Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty-Four)”, “Julia”, “Would I Lie To You?”, “It’s Alright (Baby’s Coming Back)”, “Missionary Man”, “When Tomorrow Comes”, “Thorn In My Side”, “The Miracle Of Love”, ”Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)”, “I Need A Man”, “You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart”, “King And Queen Of America”, “Revival”, “Angel”, “17 Again”, “I Saved The World Today”, and “I’ve Got A Life”. There is a special performance of their song “This City Never Sleeps” that was on a home video compilation in 1983 that the both of you really need to react to. The song was performed “unplugged”, with Dave Stewart playing slide guitar on a Dobro guitar, and an African-British gospel choir singing along. That performance is available for viewing here on UA-cam.
Love Is A Strange is unreal, the boys should do that next, they'll probably not have heard it before either.
Annie Lennox's solo stuff is great too. The video for "No More 'I Love You's" is so great. "Why" and "Walking on Broken Glass" are great too
Annie has one of the BEST voices ever !
Interesting that you mentioned Aretha Franklin. Annie and Aretha did a duet. Sisters are Doing It for Themselves! Check it out!
PLEASE react to Annie Lennox's cover of I Put A Spell On You at some point! It's absolutely mesmerizing.
Great reaction to a classic megahit! Here Comes The Rain Again is another Eurythmics must hear! Annie Lennox has an amazing soulful voice, her solo song COLD is a MUST HEAR, It Is FIRE!
Absolutely a warning, and a dark song. I feel like you guys almost need a separate channel where you analyse the videos too. I remember being absolutely in love with the fierce image of Annie Lennox as a young teen in the 80s!
You guys GOTTA do "Here comes the rain again" by Eurythmics next, a beautiful song
Annie Lennox has also won an Oscar for the song INTO THE WEST, from the LORD OF THE RINGS soundtrack. She was one of the three people who participated in writing it, and her performance of it is haunting and beautiful.
That album is full of great songs. I love Eurythmics. Try Regrets. That has soooo much soul.
Ahhh. I am a Eurythmics deep cuts gal.
Beautiful, dreamlike music. Not enough of that in this century, in my opinion.
Soft Cell has some great stuff too. BESIDES TAINTED LOVE
Yes. Check out the music video for their song, “Bedsitter”, which is a British term for a person who is unemployed or underemployed, who sits or lies in bed in their house or apartment all day doing absolutely nothing.
Annie Lennox owns a voice like few others.
A vocal chameleon.
There must be an angel is there most iconic song. Beautiful.
Crazy I been rocking this last few days . This joint forever goes nuts ! Definitely here for 80s Rock /Pop series .
Missionary Man by Eurythmics really has that flavor.
Can y’all please react to LIL PEEP plz and thank you
I would suggest listening to California world, awful things, white tee, Let me bleed & white wine
Sometimes it's good to go back and do a deep look at songs that we've only listened to in the background. Check the structure. Find the little details See what makes it iconic. Nice reaction, fellas.
My first awareness of this song was as a small child riding in the car with my mom who was totally vanilla and not into this kind of music. This came on, and my mom said after that part you quoted "That's for sure..." with such a sense of world-weary exasperation that my young little mind can still rember it 40 years later. And as children do it perked up and listened cuz it understood there was something important about the human condition here. :p
I'm glad you know this cuz Id have been like "how could you not have heard this?" Heh. :)
If you’re hitting Annie, you have to check out her tribute with Bowie to Freddie Mercury!!!! It’s magic.
If you like the 'darkness' in this tune, check out The Specials, 'Ghost Town' if you haven't already. Plus, the keyboard riff in Sweet Dreams could easily turn into Ozzy's Crazy Train riff as it does in Marilyn Manson's cover.
The hit that wouldn´t quit. If you´re 25-75 and grew up in the "western" half of human civilisation then you´ve heard this one. I bought two of their records in the 80s, but came back decades later and started appreciating the cool art-rock of the first three albums. So much more than a pop duo.. and their soundtrack to 1984 the movie is one of the best original soundtracks ever done by a "pop band".
"Who's that girl" is her best song along w Here Comes the Rain Again
How bout something off Upchurch's Pioneer album...?
You need to listen to “Would I Lie to You?” to the soul. Also, Stevie Wonder played harmonica on “There Must Be an Angel.”
If y’all are new to Eurythmics, is there a chance you missed Tears for Fears. An excellent band I kind of recently came back to from childhood.
I was a little girl when this came out in 83 I was like 13 and I swear I had like a mini boombox and I would carry it with me just so I would make sure I would miss this song they played it so much on the radio and MTV and I’m just so lucky to have grown up listening to this
Funny you mention Aretha. She was supposed to be the original singer in this band, and she sings a few tunes with them including Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves.
You might want to listen to 'Love is a Stranger,' which I think you'd enjoy. Also, Annie Lennox covered 'Train In Vain' by the Clash, and that's worth a listen, too. Try finding the video of her live performance in a small venue with her back up singers right next to her.
Hands down one of the best songs from the '80s. Annie Lennox is a vocal powerhouse. I bet you guys would enjoy Pink's song "Get the Party Started (Sweet Dreams Remix)" featuring Redman. It samples this song.
That song is about record companies. They got that beat by accident ... the machine was kind of doubling up on itself. Dave suggested the hold your head up bit to give a bit of hope.
Have you guys done Stay by Shakespear's Sister? If not, you should!
Marilyn Manson's cover of this song is great!!
Y'all gotta get back to Shinedown...45 or Save Me
Annie. Incomparable combination of exquisite class, pitch perfect, tone, funky and punky, bluesy, dark, new age and more. And she is still delivering to this day.
Wish you'd play original videos with the songs. Eurythmics were part of the beating heart of early MTV.
Speaking of R&B, give a listen to Annie Lennox's song Would I Lie to You!
RZA used their " here comes the rain again" sample on his song Tragedy 👽
@3:48 You said it was released in '93', but it was actually '83'.
SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE ABOUT WET DREAMS. I'VE LISTENED TO THIS FOR DECADES AND AS AN ADULT WAS TOLD THIS. 🧐 🤔
