Here is that video about the Namielle + Vaal Hazak theme easter eggs that I talked about (turn on english subtitles): ua-cam.com/video/UKZMJkLCCTA/v-deo.html
Wow. That has to be one of the coolest things in Monster Hunter music so far. Respect for sharing your source instead of pretending you found it, your honesty is appreciated
Vaal Hazak is essential to Rotten Vale thriving cause it helps balance the amount of effluvium. Without it the whole place would eventually die out of lack of oxygen Vaal Hazak's theme is super underrated
For the lore of the dragon, Vaal Hazak is only of the only elder dragons that actually lives in symbiosis with its environment, being the Rotten Vale. The effluvium it controls consumes corpses, and then distributes the excess nutrients into the biostream without allowing the effluvium to become so strong it would consume everything. It's like a gardener, tending to an ecological niche and keeping everything in perfect order.
Considering Vaal Hazak is essentially the only barrier between the effluvium from either dissipating or spreading rampantly, I’ve never really thought of this dude as a negative force of nature. If anything, he’s like a worm… if they were the size of a small house and had a pharyngeal jaw.
On the point of Vaal being just a guy underneath it all, there's also the fact that the Blackveil Vaal Hazak isn't some gruesome invader - it's kinda just a Vaal Hazak that felt like exploring more of the world (it just happens to accidentally have some tragic effects on the forest)
I find it interesting that some of the most docile elder dragons we have encountered, interacted with and fought are both based heavily on deep sea abyssal creatures for their design. Vaal has hints of a moray eel, viperfish, angler fish and frilled shark, while Namielle has facets of bioluminescent jellyfish, (vampire) squid, sting rays and the sort. It’s a nice juxtaposition to the normally alien view we have of those animals living in a world so far separated from our own on land.
Almost every elder dragon is destructive to their environment. Vaal hazak is one of, if not the only elder who is directly BENEFICIAL to their environment. I think thats why his theme is more heroic.
I've never drawn the connection of Roar/Forest and Hills and the beginning of the main section of Keeper of Hades. (What a badass name for Vaal's theme btw!!) I'm sure you're right that there's no true connection, but it's definitely repeated in Morning Star of the Dark Tide (Namielle's theme) I'll definitely have to go back and watch the Namielle video with subtitles on to see the connections made. I still love how both Vaal and Namielle's themes sound both villainous and heroic at the same time. What a fantastic balance.
*on an app that won't let me edit for some reason, but I realised I misread and misheard it being a different creator's video when typing my original comment lol. It does make it more interesting to hear the two together.
To be fair, Vaal Hazak is probably one of the most calm and least likely to attack you out of the blue out of all the roaming Elders. His role in balancing the Rotten Vale’s effluvium is crucial for the survival of that environment, as opposed to the other Elders who instead twist the environment around them. Of course, then there’s Blackveil, whose presence in the Ancient Forest could literally trigger an environmental collapse, so I’m not sure how that fits into the more heroic elements of the theme.
Black veil was just wondering around, its not actively trying to destroy ancient forest but rather its a side effect of its presence in ancient forest. He probably was roaming the land to find another quiet and peaceful place to rest like rotten vale
Here is some clue i found 1. Vaal's armor(female) depicted as wedding or party dress 2. It live at place where life suppose to comes to die 3. There is a rare item called Elysian Fruit there, search the meaning of Elysium can help to understand Rotten Vale 4. It has symbiotic with Effluvia that suppose to grant death and decompose living creature, while Vaal help spread the spore(can be seen by it's act in Master Rank quest, Blackveil Vaal Hazak) 5. "When people travel to the other side, there are places full of fear and sadness that you must bear alone. You'll know that same feeling if you face a Blackveil Vaal Hazak." Tears of Nirvana quest description. Maybe the heroic part you heard is, this creature suppose to die by the Effluvia, but it's not, it defeated death and control it instead, as for the wedding dress, maybe can explain why Vaal refuse to die, Elder Dragon tho, they suppose to be unexplainable indeed, so i'll say it's a lady who doesn't want to die a virgin.
I think Vaal Hazak is more of a ferryman of the dead. The person who rows the boat for dead spirits along the river. It seems to live a lonely life, spreading and taking life with each step. It clearly doesn't do this on purpose as you can freely walk around it and it won't attack you. Vaal Hazak just seems like an Elder Dragon who wants to rest and sleep harming no one. Which can be seen how it has never appeared until the very end of the game. It seems like a peaceful monster who only wakes up to do their job and go back to sleep. Also the variant being Blackveil Vaal Hazak also seems to be apparent with my idea. As it fled to the Ancient Forest which seems like a quiet and calm place to rest while still not attacking us😢
Aside from Vaal being a fairly slow and not very aggressive monster, I think a big part of the reason Vaal's theme is so calm and heroic is that they wanted Vaal's unique noises to fit into it. I think if his music was too intense, it would take away from his own intimidation and weirdness.
Vaal Hazak is just trying to do his job. It is his domain. It is his to rule. He decides life and death to those in the Vale. The Effluvium and Miasma are everywhere by his design. Tou wandered in still strong and alive. The song sounds more like he is testing you, judging you, doing his duty. If I was to come up woth my own set of lyrics for that slow down: "Here you en-ter my court, make your plea, standing in my sight! In my domain I regulate. Now will you live or will you fall and die!?"
Vaal was always one of my favorite dragons. Edit: And the quieter point where it's mostly the harpsicord, I've always felt that was trying to emphasize an almost royal feeling. Like it is the king of the Vale and carries himself in a similar way to Kushala or Velkana
An unexpected heroic figure really fits Vaal Hazak. He’s one of the least aggressive elder dragons in game. Like you said, keeps the balance of the Rotting Vale. He’s not rampaging around. While he does take life, it does not seem to be out of spite. More like an animal sensing that something is off and needs to be tended to. And it serves to allow life to exist in the Vale. 😊
Even the Reaper has his role to play. I like that more somber portion of Vaal Hazak's theme, it feels to me like a reverence of his imprtance to the world... which the transitions into the classic heroic, "knight battling a dragon" portion of the track!
I feel like the Baroque undertones on the Harpsichord go a layer deeper than how you ecplained it. Vaal Hazak drains your health with the effluvium throughout the fight, kinda like a vampire sucking blood. So giving Vaal Hazak vampire sounding music really fits as well. The Monster Hunter composers truly are broke nerds.
Great video! I think you should also consider explaining Monsters chase theme as well & the vibe they bring, because for me, Vaal Hazak's chase theme is so captivating it made me love the whole theme when I first actually listened to its chase theme!
Remember Davi all these themes are heroic themes for the monster. I fought Vaal so much trying to get the giant version that this became my favorite theme in the game lol.
He is basically the keeper of the dead In my headcanon, he’s trapped in the rotten vale, only able to stay alive by absorbing the effluvium and feasting on the dead. So basically he looks scary on the outside, decomposing body and all that, but in reality he’s trapped forever wondering the rotten vale and having to feast on dead corpses to stay alive. Because otherwise if he dies, so does the ecosystem.
Aaaah, I’ve wanted you to do this song for so long. The harpsichord is nearly impossible to hear in game and because of your channel way back when you started doing monster hunter music, I started listening to it more outside of the game and noticing little details like that.
Yeah, just comment "first" or "second" the next time jaja. I'm usually here early but I don´t like to leave a comment if I haven't watch the video yet, but it's tempting.
I like to think of Vaal Hazak as of death itself: Neutral, just outright playing his role. He isn't evil, but still a force to be reckoned with for those who defy it
The best part of Val hazak theme is how it portrayed she can command her minions, and I like to imagine the heroic part of the song is actually the hunter that facing val hazak
...I've been thinking since I found your channel and your reactions to the monster battle themes. I'm thinking, you should react to the map battle themes as well. Or even do comparison videos since some of the maps in Rise/Sunbreak have remade maps with new versions for the theme. (Sandy Plains being the only exception having a completely new theme for some bizarre reason. lol)
Sorry in advance if my english is not that good. I love Vaal Hazak he's probably in my top 10 favorite monsters. Personnaly i see his theme and him like it's and elder past its glory, slowly decaying but still attached to his pride. We are his last fight, like he was gonna say to us "if i must die, i want to die in the heat of the battle". I find his theme intimidating, epic, almost majestic with a touch of sadness, almost like the weight of the years falling on him, thus the feeling of his end approaching but not wanting to let go easily. I know that it's totally not Vaal Hazak, i know he's regulating the effluvium, but that's how i felt everytime i fought with this one and i grown attached to that vision. Still on of the best themes of World IMO 😁
You should check on Vaal chase theme too, it's probably the best in the game imo. And yeah, Vaal Hazak is among the few "classic" elders than aren't too dangeerous, unless you encounter it when it decides to create some more food stock ( by using it's long maw to inject effluvium directly in the body of a creature, apparently )
Again, I feel like the theme of Vaal Hazak is in the viewpoint of the hunter, who meets him for the first time. Vaal Hazak looks frightening, but really is not as threatening as Nergigante, Kushala Daora and Teostra. Though still a powerful Elder Dragon with one of the most dangerous status effects

I feel like Vaal “isnt a bad guy” in the same sense that the grim reaper isn’t a bad guy, or the rotten veil itself isnt a bad/evil place. Death and decay is simply a part of life, and a very important one.
The reason vaal hazak’s theme is so ‘heroic’ is because without him we wouldnt have even been able to step foot in the coral highlands nor the rotten vale.
