Haven’t tried the 12, but can’t imagine it’s very different from the 10. And at that price too… possibly the best mass market value single malt in my view. Definitely one of my go-to’s.
Some time ago, Glenmorangie changed The Quinta Ruban from 12 years to 14 years. They have now done the same with entry-level whisky. From 10 to 12 years. As you say, Glenmorangie may be overstocked, or they're making more whiskey than they can sell, or... they're just using casks, that have already been used twice or thrice and that aren't as active anymore. The good thing about all of this is that they are aware of it and are trying to improve it. Anyway, 10 years ago I started my single malt journey with Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Glenmorangie whiskies. And Glenmorangie The Quinta Ruban is still close to my heart. Also due to its 46 ABV strength.
Perhaps a little bit of all of the above. The Cask finishes are very nice. IMHO it's worth buying the whole set once for anyone who is curious about tasting different cask types. Cheers 🥃
I believe basic 12 yo is addition to the whisky line, not a replacement of the 10yo release, which is present on their website and everywhere is in stock
I hope you're right because I like the 10 more in some ways. It's being described as a replacement for the 10 though which has disappeared from shelves near me.
Thanks for your thoughts here. Glenmorangie was the first whisky I enjoyed (I wasn’t as keen on the most common alternative, Glenfiddich), though it was many years later I got “into” whisky. I still like it as an easy sipper, one to drink in company without thinking about it. It’s also one I find easy to recognise - recently when I was offered a whisky in a pub without knowing which whisky, I immediately knew it was Glenmorangie.
Another perfectly timed video. Just grabbed a 10 year because it was going away & loved it so much I went out & bought their Calvados, Port, & Sherry expressions. Fairly reasonable prices aside from the brandy finish which is a one-off. I think I may buy another 10 after this review I really appreciate this. Haven’t seen the 12 yet here locally in the states.
The 10 is rightfully a classic. And the range of cask finishes are well worth buying just to be able to taste the different cask influences on a common spirit. Very educational and worth doing.
@ yes sir. Did a tasting with the original 10, Calvados 12, & 14 year port. Quinta Ruban was the star for me. Lots of fun like you said seeing the base spirit being enhanced like that. I spent ten plus years drinking only bourbon & that was a terrible mistake being so closed minded. Only just over a year & a half into other categories. When I went to my big box store Sunday the new 12 had showed up & got another 10 year before they were gone for 30 USD 😎. Right around when I got into bourbon they took away the 12 year age statement on the small batch Elijah Craig. Always regretted not bunkering some of that.
As a few others have also said, Glenmorangie 10 is the botle that got me into whisky and I still have some fondness for it, even if I haven't been able to justify picking up a bottle in a long while. I also believe it's the top-selling single malt here in Scotland. Was curious how the new 12 stacked up, thanks for the review.
Thanks for this review. I hope by praising the good things about this product it will encourage LMVH to take the next step and give us a fully craft presentation. Hitting them with the Ralphy stick isn't the only tacktic.
What's going in to Glenfiddich 12 which is a very good 40% expression? A great Spey style. Where are folk like us going with 40% though? Add to that the other misfortunes.
I do love Glenfiddich 12. Best of the core range IMHO. I was very sad to learn that they've recently discontinued the 15 Distillery Edition. Very close to the 12 but properly presented.
Classic Glenmorangie, increasing their age statements rather than decreasing. Is the quality better as the age goes higher?.... doubtful. Looking forward to the head to head Shane, cheers!
Doubtful indeed. Others have suggested that they're upping the age statement because they're having to resort to more refill or simply poorer casks. Either way, I'm not tasting a more mature whisky, although it is different. Cheers 🥃
Sometimes it's nice to have low abv whiskey. Especially if you wanna start your whiskey evening or just get a nice dram which isn't too expensive or dramatic.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one Shane. Been a while since I've had a Glenmoragie in the glass, the pour presentation being one of the reasons (the grape influence on a lot of expressions being another). And for the record: great you manage to adjust the box to your sweater.☝🙂 Slàinte mhath
My thoughts exactly. If they improved the presentation and dropped the cask finishes I'd probably be more interested. They're kind of integral to their house style at this point though. Cheers 🥃
Glenmorangie 10 was one of my first single malts along with Glenfiddich 12. I knew about the Glenfiddich 12 but had never heard of Glenmorangie. I bought the Glenmorangie 10 after watching a review on the Whisky Vault and enjoyed it. The new 12 isn't available here yet. As for the design, I don't like how the name is split. I preferred the previous design. Cheers!
A very kind review, Shane. I went through a sample pack of Glenmorangie (pre-rebrand) and found this distillery to not suit me at all. I would take a Compass Box Orchard House any day over this castrated bottled boredom, plus the new design is hideous - but then again I'm clearly not in the target group, so to each their own. I will say they're marketing is good, they've been heavily reviewed since the rebrand.
That's a fair judgement. Glenmorangie isn't a style for everyone. To me, it has its charm and nostalgia too but it's not going to be a regular purchase. You may want to try a bottle of the 10yo from the 80s or 90s though. I picked up an old bottle at auction for very little money and it tastes like a 20yo version of the modern 10/12. Far superior. Cheers 🥃
Yes these are 43% here. The 10 was @ $42… the new 12 is closer to $60… Agree the profiles are similar…I will be doing a comparison hopefully soon. Cheers 🥃
That's a steep jump for little improvement IMHO. I think we're seeing similar prices. In supermarket discounts anyway. Looking forward to your comparison. Cheers 🥃
Very, very different. Lasanta is all about dry and spicy sherry. Stewed fruits and oak. Countetintuitively perhaps, this is quite a bit sweeter. Lasanta is probably more challenging. Both are worth a try. Cheers! 🥃
Really like the 12 Lasanta. I much prefer it over the 14 Quinta Ruban. But the old 10 is more subtle and light and white fruit. Agree with Shane's comments above. Just very different profiles.
I quite enjoy the old original 10 yo, for what I know is discontinued and replaced with this one. This new 12yo is on my "try before buy list". Here in Sweden, the fixed price is sek479 (£34) in todays currency. Cheers
Review of the 10 and comparison coming soon. To my tastes the new 12 is different. Fruitier, bolder, a little less subtle. But I've been enjoying both. If you like a little more oak in your Glenmo then the new Triple Cask Reserve is very good value too. Cheers 🥃
Love the old 10. Really dislike the modern branding of the box which seems to trivialize the product and focus on different target customer. Haven't tried the new 10 or 12 but the price has gone up so all together not a great development from what I'm noticing. Considering some trusted reviews saying something is lost in the rebrand product vs the old 10 this is sounding like a marketing disaster in the making.
Just confirmed from Ardbeg’s Bill Lumsden himself in Whiskeycast from Nov 3rd. 12 is replacing not accompanying the original 10. He didn’t say exactly but reading between the lines the 12 is a combination of 1st & 2cd fill bourbon only. Said he played around with some sherry but abandoned it quickly.
Thanks for confirming. That's how I understood it too. I would've been surprised if they kept a 10 and a 12 with such similar cask recipes. I don't taste anything like sherry in the new 12 but it does have a bit of a reconditioned / rejuvenated oak flavour to me. So bourbon casks but a bit messed around with. Could be entirely wrong. Although it's significantly different to the old 10 which was also advertised on the box as first and second fill bourbon only.
@ yes your original thought was correct but saw some disputing it in here. I guess we’ll never know the exact cask recipe. Curious if you’ve had the Calvados & Port finish as well from Glenmo? Having a tasting this Sunday & although I haven’t tried them yet the nose is amazing on both even out of the bottle.
@BourbonJazzyLife I've had Quinta Ruban. Have a bottle open at the moment and I quite like it. I think the only Calvados finishes I've had have been Arran and they were very good - works very well with the Arran style.
To be honest, although I understand the marketing/branding elements that influence those rebranding decisions (and they do make sense, the future market usually points the way), I tend to dislike the new ones; Glenmorangie and Talisker being the most obvious ones. Unfortunately it is rare to see a classic rebranded in a way that respects tradition, and also looks to the future.
I agree. I guess it's all about awareness. Much like advertising which is often more about product familiarity than actually showing you that the product is good. And what is a whisky box if not advertising 🤔
Here in the Czech Republic, Glenmorangie is a bit less available than its (in my humble opinion) main entry lvl competitors Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, so I never had a chance to taste it properly that often. So now I'm taking the opportunity to order the 10yo and new 12yo so I can compare them properly. Honestly I'm quite looking forward to it, as a return to these "beginner" whiskies feels quite refreshing. Despite the tragic presentation, they have something going for them. To answer your question the new-ish rebrand of Glenmorangie doesn't seem so bad to me, yes it's cheesy and everything but classy... but on the other hand it seems to me that they are accepting their position in the market and not playing at something they are not.
