I have a massive soft spot for R5GTT's especially the phase 1 because my 1st car on the road when I passed my driving test in 2001 was a phase 1 R5GTT all these years later i still want another.yes I think his would be much better if it still had the original 1.4T engine especially with a few mods to put it around 180bhp. But Fair play to the young lad he's saved one from the scrap yard and built himself a proper little weapon 👌👍

I had an 89 model in 1993 I loved it went through 2 turbos an a head gasket ,I had a clio 1.8 16. Valve a few years later but i loved the Renault 5 more
Sold my phase 2 a couple of years ago, the original 1.4 gets a bad rep due to people back in the day fitting boost controllers and just winding the boost up without rejetting the carb for more fuel and wondering why they went pop 😂, a properly set up carb with an AFR guage, can run 200-230bhp on stock internals other than a cam upgrade all day long. Quite a few people running that power with no problems on the owenrs club when i was on there a couple years ago in the low 12's on the quarter mile, There's a guy on the owners club that's ran 230bhp dyno'd on stock bottom end for year's and does regular track day's.

Had a Clio RSI 1.8 8 valve bottom end water damaged bought from family garage they replaced the Clio bottom end with a 2 litre Laguna original head and I upgraded the filter leads plugs and exhaust system standard bhp 108 tested on the rolling road 150 bhp at the wheel lovely hatchback really miss it. I do rate them little 5 turbo's though little flying machine when they came out.

Had a couple years ago - I loved the brakes, so much feel and with the low weight they really pulled the car up. Complete shit tip inside mind, one only had 60k miles and the seat wouldn't fold forward or adjust and the rear door cards worn through from people sitting in the back. Knees wearing a hole quick time.
I bet dealerships had fun with the warranty claims lol

It’s because the engines are too tall mate they can be dropped but means using full custom shortened mounts dropping sump even lower

I wouldn't those got through head gaskets at an incredible rate, the original push rod motor was originally from the 1950's!
@@regfenster the original engine was solid. Head gaskets blew when idiots turned the boost up without strengthening anything else.

Bloke I know crashed a 5 turbo into a river in the 90’s. It was then he found out 5 turbos float. Made of plastic. Farmer dragged it out and he drove home in it.
People used to put 1.7 turbo lump out of a Volvo in them
