    I llive in Russia, and we still have a lot of those around. Nobody really use them as an everyday car anymore, but lots and lots of people do projects similar to this and we also love to use them as winter drift cars. Winter drifting is very cheap, as you can imagine, you basically dont ruin your tires at all on snow and ice :) This orange is also very similar to one of its factory colors, I really like it. Thank you for this video, it was very unexpected to see one of those on your channel! The owner really did an amazing job, looks very cool

    A much underrated car. Back in late 1970's my mate built a 1300 Lada to compete in the Lada Rally series in his lock up without any electricity. Because funds were very limited the cost of everything had to be assessed and only necessary items were bought. Primarily, it was calculated that lightening the car as far as possible within the Regs would net greater effect so that all glass apart from the windscreen became perspex, all body panels were substituted by Fiat 124 that were 1/2 the weight and thickness, even the doors were rebuilt with a single skin in aluminium, every bolt was cut to precisely the right length and kept in a bucket, that at the end of the build gave 20kgs of scrap metal. The suspension was fully modified but the drivetrain was left standard even though the engine was regularly rev'd until the valves bounced! - the rev limiter. That car competed successfully in stage and road rallies for a few years and was then bought by another car club member who campaigned it in road rallies for a few more years all on the same used and abused drivetrain, although he did change the doors back to standard as he felt that the flimsy lightweight doors and a side impact were not compatible! To everyone in the Car Club, Dick's Lada was not a source of ridicule but of appreciation that could embarrass all but the very best Escorts, Vauxhalls, Sunbeam and Lancer

    • @brostenen
      @brostenen 2 роки тому +4

      @@clivewilliams3661 I dont know if that is the reason in every single country globally. But I do know that old people bought lada, skoda and wartburg here in Denmark in the 1980's. Because eastblock cars were so darn cheap. Like 1/6'th of the price of a new Mercedes.

    • @clivewilliams3661
      @clivewilliams3661 2 роки тому +7

      @@brostenen It was the same in UK and I knew several people who bought those three makes, who either bought the cars because they didn't have the money or wanted the simplicity of the basic vehicle or both. Most older people were used to driving basic vehicles in their younger days of a similar standard and besides they no longer had the need to look cool. My mate with the Lada couldn't afford an Escort to rally and the championship was cheap motorsport, another mate bought a Skoda Estelle to get a new car cheap, instead of the suspect pre-owned ones he was used to for much the same price. And a third family friend bought a Wartburg for much the same reason as he had to do a 200mile (320Km) round trip each week for his engineering business and he needed something reliable and being Hungarian was used to Eastern (but non-Russian) Bloc cars.That Wartburg was driven up and down the M1 at near max speed ~80mph loaded with engineering jobs in the boot for at least 3 years without a major failure, that could not be expected of a European car.
      Today we have a Skoda Superb that is simpler than my daughter's similar aged Passat , but not simple enough for my aged liking, it is however, more reliable than hers.

    • @netiturtle
      @netiturtle 2 роки тому +1

      What's underrated about it though. You'd have to throw everything away apart from the body, and this body rusts as soon as there is rain in neighboring country. I think it had thicker metal to make the rusting process last longer, but this also makes it heavier.
      I mean the base car had actual suspension, which is a progress compared to even later fully Russian-developed cars, but its too soft for tuning.
      Good for a show and evoking nostalgic emotions, but there are so many better options

      А так обычно:
      Сперва нажимаем на значок "шестерёнка" внизу экрана ролика на панели (на компе, на телефоне вверху), выбираем СУБТИТРЫ - они здесь только на английском языке, то есть нажимаем на надпись АНГЛИЙСКИЙ (СОЗДАНО АВТОМАТИЧЕСКИ). Автоматически означает что речь сведена в субтитры на слух гуголовским роботом, то есть если речь не внятна роботу - плохо сведёт. Дальше, нажимаем на эту строчку (или на АВТОПЕРЕВОД на телефоне) - выйдет ПЕРЕВЕСТИи выбираем из полсотни языков РУССКИЙ. В целом тексты английских субтитров несложные к роликам на автомобильную тему. Но есть тонкости перевода. Например капот , становится капюшоном. Потому что у слова the hood (капот) много значений, в том числе и капюшон. Надо только вспомнить современную моду - популярные у молодёжи футболки, свитера с капюшоном - худы.
      P.S. The hood - это капот у американцев, у англичан капот - это bonnet, одно из значений - шляпа..))

    For being the "worst" car it managed to win the 1967 European Car of the Year award. I've only driven the actual Lada's (vaz 2101), not the rebranded Fiat's, but they're outright unkillable, if you give them a service every now and then. Both belonged to my father. He still has one conserved in a garage. The first one went over for about a 1.5 million kilometers and would have probably continued to chooch if rust wouldn't have consumed it. He'd still be driving the second one, if serviceable parts were still readily available, but being almost a half century car, you can imagine that parts are pretty sparse nowadays outside of a select few countries (even there they're probably running out), and the costs of them ain't worth it for a daily.

    Seeing that Escort Mk2 brings back some memories. My father bought an Escort Mk2 in 1978. Not quite sure what he had before but it also was a Ford. I was born in 74 so buying a new car felt like a big deal to me. I later learned to drive on an Escort Mk4. I would love to get my hands on either a Mk2 or a Mk4, both cars will always have a special place in my heart.

    Eastern European here, I just want to say this: my grandpa used to be the head of a hospital wing, (so a local 'important head') and had to wait for aaages to get his "Zhiguli" (Lada) and he just *cherished* the car. Its interiors looked like nothing in the video shown in this video. The seats were much simpler. But the man cared for his car, and was it not for his nephew totaling the vehicle, then today it would have been a piece of retro art.

They were tough, just worked and easy to fix (with the supplied toolkit)! Always saying how badly you did, try to find materials on the topic and prepare carefully. In Lada, many elements were reinforced, the suspension was changed for the better, the clutch and gearbox synchronizers were strengthened.

    Sleepers are AWESOME! Back in the early '80's I had a '72 Toyota Celica with the 18 RC engine. The "Progressive Two Barrel" was giving me grief and as a poked through my box of carbs and adapters I happened across an old Two to Four barrel adapter AND a 600 CFM Holley. "What if" I thought. The adapter base needed a bit of modification to fit, the Holley was a simple bolt on after changing to a 3" Power Valve and #40 jets. The carb fit well - it even had a 10" chrome air cleaner! The project was completed with a simple rubber fuel line and a throttle linkage by means of a 2' piece of wire with a wrench as a handle. (No sense fabricating a linkage if it won't run0 Somewhat surprisingly, it DID run - quite well at that. After a couple of blasts around the block I added a cable throttle linkage, ending up with a unique "Rice Rocket". I also added a header and a "Stebro" glass pack muffler - I will say the sound of the secondary's kicking in certainly was different!
