We should also know what Lee Kuan Yew had to say about India. He predicted that India will keep struggling because of its bureaucratic structure. Mr. Lee called India “a nation of unfulfilled greatness.” “Indians will go at a tempo which is decided by their constitution, by their ethnic mix, by their voting patterns, and the resulting coalition governments, which makes for very difficult decision-making,”

I lived in Singapore for a very long time, and learnt a lot about it. Income taxes are incredibly low, and people get taxed for what they pay only. The maintenance was so proper, if u saw a pothole in the road while sleeping, it wont be there when u are awake. The governments, homes or HDBs are so great, the world's governments have never seen such great government housing. Altho cost of living is high, they give u the proper quality of life. The healthcare is so amazing, that when i was hospitalised in a young age, i wanted to stay in the hospital. The country is true paradise

I am from Singapore, borned just after Singapore become independent 1965. And you teach me more than I know. Yes, I can feel the development in Singapore everyday: so much activities and changes everyday. But an important factor is also UNITY - everyone must be united for the good of the country. From past remarks made by LKY, he commented that is the most difficult part for India - so many people, so many languages, so many cultures, and independence of states - unity is really hard to achieve. So India really has to work their own strategy for growth.

    • @deepblue3682

That's true india is union of nations... not a nation state.. every time a common language or common civil code was tried to be implemented the provinces (nations) inside india revolted and everytime land utilization bills were introduce landloards, farmers revolted... as an indian i feel its better to disperse india into smaller states like europe is now. If slovenia and crotia, germany and austria are different countries... india could be minimum 10-12 nations

Singapore is a role model for all nations on earth on how to build a nation as a single community irrespective of so many differences and strictness to be applied wherever its absolutely necessary.

Love this video, great content. As a proud Singaporean my country’s meteoric rise was not an overnight success and it was not based on corruption or any one race only given priority. Yes Singapore is not always perfect, but I am thankful and appreciative to be Singaporean.
Likewise for my Indian brothers and sisters, India is such a blessed nation with wonderful resources, young growing population etc. My prayer is for the people in India to be united in thinking of One Nation and not along the lines of religion, race or caste outlook. Stay positive India is rising with a bit more work you will rise even stronger. I love and respect India it’s the country of my birth.

Firstly we need to study and access external threats to the country, specially internal contradictory school of thoughts, we know as there are so many, otherwise how come Global Times publish and appeal to Indian students to see how their country is run hiding the atrocities caused to its own people by not allowing freedom of speech and actions and trying to cause agitation ( like the Delhi recent incidents ,causing trouble to Delhitetes itself) in our country via various ngo funding. First we need to set clear objectives about what we want to achieve. And offcoarse the video is very I formative. .
I think the IAS officers ( rather nation builders) should come out of their comfort zones via watching this video to do something for this country. 75 years ahve gone these people have not co tributed an iota of work inspite of having enjoying a gala of a lifestyle, but I am.hopeful that alphabet and others are offcoarse working ona lot of technology where the beurocratic roadblocks can be avoided or rather it become invalid, where we need less governance and egoistic govt officers and set clear outcomes for ease of public life. Blockchain is another technology which will transform any county.

Equality doesn't mean that if a man can lift 50 kgs so should the woman too, equality is what the Pm of Singapore did. He gave benefits to poor irrespective of their religion and built them from scratch. Indians keep fighting on the basis of religion, they keep yelling that their caste is superior but when it comes to reservation they just want to be the first one to get the benefits. Religion, reservation and politics is taking our country backwards and this is not just the fault of the politicians but also the common public who believes them.

No. Make military training right from school mandatory as we had National Cadet Corps.
It is not there now. This is the first step. Military camps for NCC should be held in different parts of the country. This will help intermingling of students and a sense of unity between different ethnic groups. Slowly this will change the mind set . Second right from first standard children should take pledge to protect the country and be united.
Remove archaic laws immediately. Politicians should never interfere with the working of the govt machinery. They can only supervise the working and if the machinery fails take corrective action. No whimsical actions by the politicians. This should be prohibited by law. Politicians cannot change their affiliation to another party after winning under one banner. It should be a punishable offence. No salary or perqs for politicians. It should be taken care by the respective parties . There should be uniform civil law irrespective of religion caste or creed.
The federal structure of the states should be respected and the developed state should be given the
rightful share of the taxes. The union govt should subsidize the need of the under developed states .
Supreme court should hear cases only pertaining to constitution, interstate disputes and cases which have consequences on the integrity finance and development of the country. Judges should be selected on the basis of merit only.
Finance restructure to be done immediately. Wages should be based on unskilled semi skilled and skilled labour. All unproductive labour like govt admin staff should be classified as unskilled and salary should be on par of industrial unskilled labour. All banking system and govt undertaking should be made independent and they should work on the basis of a regular business. No financial help from the govt
There should be uniform rules for retirement benefits
All govt departments including hospitals should work on business lines no subsidy.
Any violation of law should be punished severely. There should be fear to violate the law. Law enforcement agencies should work asper guidelines and should not be working under political pressure.
These are some of the reforms that should be done immediately which will take the country forward. Otherwise we will be still be carrying the tag as a developing country even we show development.

I must congratulate you for so succinctly summarizes how Singapore managed to overcome its numerous problems during its nascent nation-building stage. Singapore also learnt from many other developed countries in the earlier days and pick those ideas that will work and tailored them for Singapore's unique problems. China did the same thing and that is why it's economy grew so fast. India, I am sure can also achieve this, hopefully, after seeing your video.

I'm watching this video pretty late but I think it's timeless, which is the best compliment anyone can pay it. So well researched and articulated. It's a delight when facts are presented in a narrative that is engaging and also informative, and this video does both. I also love it when the content has a purpose beyond just stitching information together from different sources (which is also a noble endeavour if it has the right intent). The purpose of this one, is for us as Indians to take a leaf out of this small island nation's almost miraculous turnaround. I enjoyed the frank, factual and apolitical views of the presenter who breaks down the stumbling blocks before India. I wish politicians and bureaucrats who govern this country would pay heed to the advice here. Conscious capitalism is truly the need of the hour. Adversity is the mother of invention and Singapore has proved, that whether it's a person or a country, every tragedy and problem has a hidden opportunity to create something new. I hope India and Indians learn that. Instead of merely continuing the practices followed by our colonial masters - be it communal segregation or putting profits before people - we need to create a new blueprint for our country. The last time we broke away from the past and acted boldly was when we opened up the economy and look how that worked for us! Again, it was adversity that forced us into action. Nationalism isn't blind faith in everything about your country being great. It's about having the courage to admit things we are not good at, learning from those who are doing it better and then working on making it happen. I hope someday soon we will ditch empty words for action and pseudo nationalism for real pride.

    1. Instilling spirit of unity among young people at early stages through national service army.

    3. Creating jobs through subsidies, easy taxation policy, encouraging export company, foreign investment.

    The main learnings were :
    1. identifying the key resources - investing in corresponding infrastructure development - ensuring proper maintenance : this can build strong foundations for a prosperous future.
    2. rather than holding on to rigid ideologies and classifications, learn to identify the good points on either side and use them as tools for the benefit of people at large.

Well done! You got the facts right and also presented it very well. Indeed the secret of Singapore's success is in plain sight. It all seems intuitive in hindsight. Many also dismiss its easy to achieve this in a small place. Can you share your take on some of the following points in your next 'Learnings from Singapore' ? Include the contribution of Education (esp in Primary schools), Meritocracy as a policy, zero tolerance on Corruption across the Board etc. You may like to talk about Penalty for non conformance to law and rules that makes for discipline and living in harmony. Singapore is not perfect - but it tries to be better everyday on all fronts that matter to a common man. India can do all this with zero investment !

The day after the rain stopped, the people gathered. Some gathered lumber and chopped down a few trees, many brought their carpentry tools-nails, hammers, saws etc. In three days they had built a bridge to enable children to go to school and workers and farmers to to to their work. He had seen something similar in Kerala. The people were waiting -bitching and lamenting- for the government to come and fix or built a bridge for them.
