Self seeders... the good and the bad. I think I have pulled out hundreds of morning glory baby seedlings and about a hundred coreopsis this year. More pop up after a good rain. Will never plant Morning glory again!
@@MariaSanchez-zf9cs yes, it's extremely invasive in some areas. Some governments will fine you lots of $$$$ if they find out you've planted it, and they will keep checking your property to make sure you have completely eradicated it.
Linda, you really are one of my favourite ‘must see’ gardening channels. It was so good to see your garden from across the street, lovely view. I think if you have a garden channel you probably assume viewers can see what you see, but we can only see the snippets in one particular frame, so it’s lovely to get the complete view. And it’s a very gorgeous view seeing the whole picture 😍

Very good advice! I used to say, after I moved into my home 30 years ago, "It's a good thing I didn't have much money to do the garden plans then because my tastes (and knowledge) have changed over time."
I have a huge and old fig tree that I hated because nothing grows under it and the branches were going everywhere. Thanks to you, I have trimmed it, cut the branches to make a beautiful structure and put flagstone under it.It is now my focal point from my kitchen, I will now try to put an arrangement of pots! You do a great job explaining design concepts. I like that your explanations are not overly brief. I am not a gardening beginner but I learned from this video and now I head outside to look at my Pennsylvania garden with new eyes.
This is great advice. Most of us, like you, purchase a house with existing plant material. I do think it’s good to wait out the first summer so you can see what lives there in case you moved in in the winter!! Lol We are at the NJ shore and our 20 years of hard work was obliterated by Storm Sandy. That changed everything because we lost a lot of trees. So now I’ve learned to view my garden as a continual work in progress. I’m ok w constantly moving things now. I belong to a community garden where I grow food however I do have food growing in and amongst my flowers etc and no one ever seems to notice! Most are in containers, a new addiction of mine as I get older. I love your channel, and can’t wait to get some pots from QVC! Cheers!
These are great tip for new and old gardeners. Sometimes those of us that have been gardening for awhile need reminders of where we need tweak things as the garden is forever evolving. The entire plot on which my new house has been built was a garden originally, so I'm trying to work around some of the plants that I don't want to remove (or can't like hedges), but I have already received a lot of inspiration from your videos, in particular your advice. Linda, I just want to say that I am so happy to have found your u-tube channel and have been a subscriber for about a year now. I also have started over in a new home with a completely blank landscape leaving behind more of a cottage garden on a pond. Over the 28 years we lived there we added an upper garden with retaining walls and picket fence with an arbor over the steps down to the lower garden, gazeebo and pond. It included trees brought home as tiny seedlings my boys brought home from school on arbor day, perennials exchanged with my nurse garden club friends, the gazeebo on the pond that was a display model at a hardware store that we had to take down and move ourselves and many red bud trees that I purchased for around ten dollars each. I so miss that garden!!! I did not take enough pictures! You can never take enough pictures. I started my new garden which was a new home with a completely blank slate 5 years ago. Trying to plan ahead for my old age since I pretty much do everything myself. Since I was a hospital nurse for over thirty years I have had spine and knee surgeries and I'm trying to keep future limitations in mind as I design and plant my garden. I encourage you to remind people to keep these things in mind as they plan their gardens and I so look forward to following you as you develope your new space over time. What a great tips for garden design beginners, you just proved to us, that no matter how we start our garden lying out, Mother nature has its own say and its just part of nature harmony to adjust to changes coming along . What a lovely thought linda.
Such good tips....really good garden design teaching! I love the tip about making something a feature. In my front garden I’d say that my blue spruce is a true feature and I love it underplanted with white begonias and a boxwood border. In my side garden my two story crepe myrtle is stunning but should have gone somewhere where it gets more sunshine. In my back garden I have my huge iron urn in my cutting garden and then the transition with my crushed granite and flagstone walk and viburnum border which leads to my croquet lawn and ultimately the veg garden and greenhouse. My back garden is fairly small but dividing it into rooms makes it feel bigger.
What excellent and insightful tips!!! I am so pruning up my snowball bush which is also gigantic but gives my front bedroom privacy in our subdivision. Also so much fun to watch and listen to the little birdies in the shrub as I sit in my bedroom! Bonus!
I love all of your tips Linda! A tip that I would add for new gardeners is to get planting and don't be afraid to jump in! Do a little research and start with a few easy-to-grow plants. Don't think you will have everything figured out perfectly. Gardening is something that constantly changes. If you don't like a plant in a certain spot, you can always move it, so don't fret over getting your first plants in the ground. When I think of all of the things I did "wrong" in the beginning, and still had what I considered to be a fairly nice beginner garden, all of those mistakes were part of the journey that have lead me to where I am today. Even as a seasoned gardener, no one has it figured out 100%! Just get planting! The rest will all fall into place.
Tip number one, follow the shade line...wow...I’m re-working my front yard and have pondered over where to start! It makes so much sense! Why didn’t I think of that, lol! 🤦🏻♀️ Your gardens remind me so much of both my grandmother’s gardens and I hope to have mine look half as good as yours (and their’s) 😉 Your QVC line is awesome and I’m headed over to the website next! Being intuitive can lead to creative processes that we never could imagine at the very beginning. sometimes I find happy accidents end up bringing the most joy. Great info ..I am fortunate that I am a very visual learner and person not to be a braggart but I can intuitively space things well.. however I do have stumbling blocks in the garden but you have reinforced the idea of looking watching and put the right plants in the right area! For years I struggled with what grows well here on the gulf coast lost a lot of plants and $$$.. but with education thru utube and Southern keeper plants it has finally kinda come together my garden has changed so much over 38 years due to hurricanes trees down it’s ever evolving.. your info Linda is just wonderful reinforcement for me to always try and readjust!! Will def comment on the scale part: love that adding curves to usually angular and linear homes is a big step in creating a garden bed. Most of mine are pretty boxy and I think it would be a good idea that could give a more whimsical garden effect to do that. I just can’t help but to love straight lines 😂

Linda, I hadn't noticed the "uglies" until you pointed them out since there are so many beautiful, eye-catching "pretties"! I think the viburnum in its current location helps to tie the two gardens and helps soften the fence entry to the potager garden.
Love your front garden, it is just gorgeous! I love your home and the brick. I picture it also limewashed and it would only be even equally as beautiful. It is my fav look for brick. It would make your house a standout with all the darker brick around. I would have said first thing to do is plant your trees because they take so long to grow, but you are right, use existing trees first. I sent you a suggestion on your FB page for an item you might want to sell.

I'm loving how your red/orange barberry is echoing the larkspur in front of your potager garden!! Great advice about understanding the space and needs of a plant. For me the emphasis was being able to understand the space needed in proportion to the bed size. I have a Mystic Spires Blue salvia that has become one of my favorite plants simply because I have moved it 4x in 4 years due to space/poor planning reasons. It's still one of the biggest work beasts in my garden despite being moved so much! It is one of the plants that receives the most comments from neighbors passing by. Great and wonderful "happy accidental" learning moment, thankfully!

I have a very large area under my tree that won't gross grass and I didn't know what to do with it until now. That was extremely helpful going across the street and showing us the front of your house/garden beds. Now when you talk about scale, I get it. Thanks again for another fantastic video! That was a neat story about the matriarch redbud that you left in place.
We’ve been in our house for 30 years as well. It’s a small semi-detached home with a small front bed and a narrow side yard. There was absolutely nothing planted in the side yard so we had a clean slate. I wish I would have planned more but things were trial and error for a while. I was anxious to plant!! Twenty years ago we planted a purple leaf plum and over the years we removed and replaced the plants to be more shade loving ones under the tree’s canopy. Another area is sunny with sun loving plants, and another area is for potted herbs and vegetables.

My problem area is a small hill that gets runoff from the house on the street behind me. It’s been a struggle to keep anything alive because of too much sun in the late summer. Right now I have a crepe myrtle for some shade and it has helped some and I let volunteer native Beauty Berry and Honeysuckle grow, which helps with the runoff. I try to keep it natural looking and the birds love it. I found sometimes nature is telling me what I can and can’t do, so I’m letting it go for now. Thanks for the design tips!

Unfortunately, you have no say in what,the neighbors do. A young couple moved in next door and cut down a wonderful huge magnolia because it was "messy". Now my formerly shady garden will get a lot more sun. Fortunately, nandinas and my beloved oak-leaved hydrangea will get much more Southern sun. A new adventure in gardening!

Even as a seasoned gardener, no one has it figured out 100%! Just get planting! The rest will all fall into place.
Tip number one, follow the shade line...wow...I’m re-working my front yard and have pondered over where to start! It makes so much sense! Why didn’t I think of that, lol! 🤦🏻♀️ Your gardens remind me so much of both my grandmother’s gardens and I hope to have mine look half as good as yours (and their’s) 😉 Your QVC line is awesome and I’m headed over to the website next! Being intuitive can lead to creative processes that we never could imagine at the very beginning. sometimes I find happy accidents end up bringing the most joy. Linda, thank you ever so much for this video, especially the tip for hiding uglies. Now, I know confidently what I need to do. I’m in Wisconsin (zone 5), so it may take awhile to get there. Also, I am excited to receive confirmation from QVC that my baskets are on their way. Lanterns next. And then planters. Hope everyone who were lucky enough to get the finials send in photos, so that the rest of us slow schmucks can live vicariously through them 😁

Great info ..I am fortunate that I am a very visual learner and person not to be a braggart but I can intuitively space things well.. however I do have stumbling blocks in the garden but you have reinforced the idea of looking watching and put the right plants in the right area! For years I struggled with what grows well here on the gulf coast lost a lot of plants and $$$.. but with education thru utube and Southern keeper plants it has finally kinda come together my garden has changed so much over 38 years due to hurricanes trees down it’s ever evolving.. your info Linda is just wonderful reinforcement for me to always try and readjust!! Will def comment on the scale part: love that adding curves to usually angular and linear homes is a big step in creating a garden bed. Most of mine are pretty boxy and I think it would be a good idea that could give a more whimsical garden effect to do that. I just can’t help but to love straight lines 😂

Lots of great ideas for designing a garden. I need to go back and watch again! Whenever you show your backyard, I'm always looking at your fence! We need to do something for privacy and I really like yours. I ordered your largest hanging basket on QVC and I'm so excited! I'm on the hunt for scented geraniums to fill it!

You obviously have some natural talent for knowing what is going to work and look good, but explaining to us about the things to be aware of and to plan for is invaluable. Linda, I hadn't noticed the "uglies" until you pointed them out since there are so many beautiful, eye-catching "pretties"! I think the viburnum in its current location helps to tie the two gardens and helps soften the fence entry to the potager garden.

Love your front garden, it is just gorgeous! I love your home and the brick. I picture it also limewashed and it would only be even equally as beautiful. It is my fav look for brick. It would make your house a standout with all the darker brick around. I would have said first thing to do is plant your trees because they take so long to grow, but you are right, use existing trees first. I sent you a suggestion on your FB page for an item you might want to sell.

Great advice about understanding the space and needs of a plant. For me the emphasis was being able to understand the space needed in proportion to the bed size. I have a Mystic Spires Blue salvia that has become one of my favorite plants simply because I have moved it 4x in 4 years due to space/poor planning reasons. It's still one of the biggest work beasts in my garden despite being moved so much! It is one of the plants that receives the most comments from neighbors passing by.

I have a very large area under my tree that won't gross grass and I didn't know what to do with it until now. That was extremely helpful going across the street and showing us the front of your house/garden beds. Now when you talk about scale, I get it. Thanks again for another fantastic video! That was a neat story about the matriarch redbud that you left in place.
We’ve been in our house for 30 years as well. It’s a small semi-detached home with a small front bed and a narrow side yard. There was absolutely nothing planted in the side yard so we had a clean slate. I wish I would have planned more but things were trial and error for a while. I was anxious to plant!! Twenty years ago we planted a purple leaf plum and over the years we removed and replaced the plants to be more shade loving ones under the tree’s canopy. Another area is sunny with sun loving plants, and another area is for potted herbs and vegetables.

My problem area is a small hill that gets runoff from the house on the street behind me. It’s been a struggle to keep anything alive because of too much sun in the late summer. Right now I have a crepe myrtle for some shade and it has helped some and I let volunteer native Beauty Berry and Honeysuckle grow, which helps with the runoff. I try to keep it natural looking and the birds love it. I found sometimes nature is telling me what I can and can’t do, so I’m letting it go for now. Thanks for the design tips!

Unfortunately, you have no say in what,the neighbors do. A young couple moved in next door and cut down a wonderful huge magnolia because it was "messy". Now my formerly shady garden will get a lot more sun. Fortunately, nandinas and my beloved oak-leaved hydrangea will get much more Southern sun. A new adventure in gardening!
