- This garden design strategy costs nothing, yet can improve the look of your gardens in a huge way! Before I forget, here’s the link to how I pruned up my smaller viburnum for the first time

so you can see how it was transformed originally. Opening up shrubs and providing negative space for plants to breathe is one of my favorite things to do in the garden. It relieves congestion and allows more air flow, play of light, and exposes the beautiful forms of surrounding plants. I’ve accomplished this by cutting back shrubs and perennials in close contact with other plants, but you could do the same by not planting ANYTHING nearby and allowing plants to be showcased in their entirety - and give your eye a rest. Don’t overlook the power of creating and using negative space in your gardens!

Dear Linda, I'm a dermatologist and a content creator from Manila, Philippines. I come from a family who loves plants but it's just last year when I really started to garden (one of the very few things that happened in this pandemic). I'd like to say I love watching you. YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER. You speak clearly and give concrete examples. I love how you describe your plants - reminds me of how a doctor like me needs to describe the skin in detail. I was screaming "yes, yes, yes!" when you said don't plant bamboo in your garden, hahahaha! SO DIFFICULT TO REMOVE! I had to hire professionals to dig them up. VERY COSTLY.
When I'm down, I visit your channel. I don't find anything about it to be pretentious. I don't feel you're trying to impress us...you are just sharing your happiness.
Thank you!
This comment made my morning!
Here here!
Simply put - negative space makes the plants stand out. Love it! Very helpful.💚🌳
Exactly!
Linda, I just love your vocabulary. It is such a joy to hear you speak!
Indeed, I actually improve my English while learning about gardening. How cool is that.
I’m always thinking the same thing.
I have to write the words down and look them up. Love this.
Refreshing to hear someone speak intelligently.
I agree! I thought I had an above average vocabulary myself, but Lordy, Linda's use of language is quite an education for the rest of us. It's not pretentious it's just using her gift of a great vocabulary.
You inspire me so much I had to pause the video and go out and prune! I love your garden and teaching style. Now I am back for more.
Love how friendly you are to those going by and your gorgeous yard!!!!
Her attention to detail is amazing! Love watching her videos!!!
Thank you!
Thanks Linda - yes it’s been pouring in the north east so loved seeing the sunshine in your neck of the woods! Loved the idea of negative space and giving the garden definition. Thanks for the great idea!
I trimmed my lilac bush exposing the bottom branches and love it! ☀️🌸
I just found Linda on UA-cam this year and my life has not been the same. First, all my money is being spent on plants. 😱 I have a garden now vs a back yard lol. I have pea gravel everywhere. Not bad fir my freshman year of gardening. My sophomore year goal- topiaries!! So glad I found this community!🌸
Welcome!!
Hi Linda
I’m in zone 9b Northern California. Our weather is very hot. My tomatoes are going crazy 😜. Tons of tomatoes. My flowers look beautiful. I enjoy watching you and I learn so much. You are a excellent teacher. God Bless you 🙏🏾
Linda, I cut my rhododendrons after they bloomed last year and was amazed this year how large the blooms were this spring. Your video on negative space is inspiring.
Pruning is one of my favorite things to do and I thought maybe I was overdoing it until I saw your gardening methodology. It’s so true about how mentally therapeutic pruning can be. I love all of your content and have learned a great deal even though I’m a seasoned gardener. I’ve bought 3 Deutzia’s, (Chardonnay Pearls), because of you and I love them; also several boxwood and topiaries. Thank you for all of your outstanding videos. We’ve had the crazy weather here in central Connecticut too; record lows in the 40’s and me and the hubs were just at our favorite beach in RI this past Thursday and it was 78 degrees. It’s been raining for 2 days straight, but we need the rain. I can’t wait to see your next videos. I’m totally addicted!
What a nice thing to say! Sounds like we’re birds of a feather :-)
Hi Linda From watching your videos you have inspired me to revamp our decking area. You have also encouraged me to believ. that I can care for plants and keep them healthy. Thank you so much. 😊
Little by little I am learning how to appreciate gardening. My husband has always been the gardener in our family. I have stayed out of his way, but we are now moving into a different phase of our lives, and I need to step into the garden to not just appreciate it, but to get involved. Daunting at times, but I am slowly learning, and you have become my "go to" for information. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and passion, it helps guide me on my journey.
Oh! Different phases different stages! Just channel your inner child my friend :-)
You are so eloquent! Thank you for explaining why you are doing the things that you are doing in the garden.
I love the fashion blurbs at the end of your videos.
I've only been watching your videos a short while and came upon them by accident. I have lived most of my 78 years in the hill country of Texas except for 4 years in central Oklahoma where our daughter lives. We are currently in the process of moving back to Oklahoma around the Chandler area and am so happy to have your videos to show me what I can and can't grow in the area. When we lived there before we tried to have a vegetable garden but the gophers were rampant at our place so that didn't work out too well. I will be better prepared this time with tools I'm learning, not just from you but other helpful gardeners. Thank you for doing these videos and I hope you continue.
Loved how you clipped each bush for space to see the other plant. Thank you.
So helpful! These sort of behind-the-scenes- maintenance is often over-looked by my favorite garden instructors, but as you say, “is very important!”
Definitely, this is helping me a lot. Some parts of my garden seem crowded but I was afraid of pruning. Negative space in the garden is a new concept for me Thank you Linda❤️❤️❤️, from New York
In Art as in Gardening, there is an Art to stopping!
Negative space is like framing to a great piece of Art!
Love your style!
Excellent- I actually spent the morning doing this with my black fennel !!! It is the centerpiece of my potager - for swallowtail butterflies. Made a huge difference. Linda !!! Love the fashion epilog !!!!
I’ve been attending David Culp’s monthly webinars and he often refers to the importance of negative space, providing images from his own garden that demonstrate this design principle. Thank you for sharing your tips and demonstrating practical examples. It is so helpful as I continue to learn more about garden design.
I typically think of negative space negatively. I'm going into the garden today to clip away and expose the understory.
Excellent!!
Hi Linda, after watching your viburnum pruning episode last week, I took to a side garden bed that hasn’t really ever done much behind the garage and have completely given it a full overhaul. I removed a lot of euphorbia that self seeds and pulled out scrubby nothing plants, added a huge amount of seasoned manure, but best part was creating a huge amount of negative space using your signature under pruning technique. A thousand times improved! Wish I could add a photo!
I love your energy Dominique!
Thanks for reminding your viewers of this important design concept!
New York. Was warm. Now 3 days of rain and wind. Just discovered your videos. Great!
Welcome!
Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. Last week it was sunny snd in the 90s with high humidity and then dropped to rainy and cold with temps in the low 40s. I have followed you for awhile now and have seen you do this “negative space” pruning and have begun this in my own garden. It really IS a game changer.
Colorado here. Very wet Memorial Day weekend. I don’t mind the rain but could do without the ping pong size hail. Truly enjoyed the negative space learning. Bless you Linda and Stewart. Take care of that back.
Hail is the worst!
I LOVE your baskets - I have received all 4 and they are so versatile and beautiful.
Your brace looks like an obi belt for gardeners - a fashion statement must have.
As with interior design, negative space can be a good thing.
All good examples of how a little pruning can have major impact.
Yes to all!
I love this very practical how-to with you. I totally agree that the existence of negative space makes the rest of your tableau sing! 🤩
I had two bushes under my dogwood tree and removed them this year and it really looks beautiful now. Thanks for all your wonderful youtube videos.
You make wearing a back brace stylish! My husband is always trying to get me to wear mine. You’ve inspired me to wear it, now! 🌻
Go for it💃🏼!
@@LindaVater yes ma’am! 🌺
You are so right about the negative space.
This was such a great infromative video. Saving it for future reference as my garden matures. Thank you and have a lovely Sunday.
After 2 months of dry weather, no rain at all, yesterday and today heavy rain. We can pull weeds tomorrow, Memorial Day. Philadelphia and 70 miles northeast of. Love listening to you.
So glad you got rain👍
Great video Linda! Awesome topic and you explained it beautifully...
What a brilliant way to give dimension and build drama in the garden....THANK YOU! 👍
This is the part of gardening I’m really at loss. Thank you so much Linda👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Beautiful light in your garden! Here in the South West of France (near Biarritz) coldest month of May since a long time. Temperatures at night similar than the month of November! But today the birds are singing and the sky is blue!
Enjoy every second!
I am a painter as well as a gardener and I see so many similarities between the two. In my watercolors, negative space is an important consideration as is color, form and composition. I garden almost an acre of what was my grandmother’s, then my mother’s, and now mine. We each have had a different style of gardening over the last 100 years. I live on the shores of Puget Sound in rural Washington. Lush doesn’t begin to describe the vegetation growth this year...after growth in March, April, and May I begin the cutting back. I’m doing a fund raising garden tour for the local senior society next month...there is no rest for the weary. I love your channel and use you for inspiration...I’ve only been to Oklahoma once a long time ago.😍
Then you must come again! How fortunate that you live in such a beautiful natural environment… And that you add to its fundamental beaut by creating and sharing. Thank you for your service my Gardening friend
Oh Linda! I love this! Such an underrated value in the garden.
New subscriber here. Your title sucked me in immediately. I have successfully incorporated negative space in my garden as it has matured and changed over the past 25 years. For me it has been a way to allow my beloved plants to be seen and not lost in the garden. Here in Oregon’s Willamette Valley we are getting hot weather this week. 90’s for a few days. My newly planted babes will have to be closely monitored. Fun to read all the comments from your viewers worldwide.
Welcome!!!
Michigan - Frost this morning, 90's last week. Spent last evening covering and this morning uncovering plants.
Similar weather in Michigan as in Ontario Canada. It’s not surprising that the world is experiencing these weather patterns due to global warming and other factors. We don’t live on a static planet.
It's been nuts!
We're in Michigan too and I stopped planting annuals. I have it ingrained in my head that I won't get emotional about losing plants before Memorial Day, because it is quite normal to have frost here at this time of year. Saved me so much stress!
Today here in South Central Pennsylvania, it’s 45 degrees and rain showers.... my petunias are loving it actually. I’ve planted a ton of white ones and they look awesome.....the showers are not bad because the sunshine is suppose to return tomorrow ☀️☀️☀️...
Linda, you always look so pretty...when gardening💃💃💃. Inspirational 💐💐🌸🌸
I’m in VA and this is the coldest Memorial weekend I have ever seen. Highs in the low 50s and lows in the 40s. We had to turn on the heat. Very wet too, which is great for pulling weeds. ❤️🇺🇸🌱
(Central VA here) I've lived here for 20 years now and yep, unusual for sure!
Sounds like us in Ma. cold, rainy... pouring right now and in the 40's.
Cold in Atlanta yesterday and again today. Warming up though.
Same here..
Richmond was ridiculous Sunday. Hoping for a little sunhine today. But yes - great for weeding and doing a little planting. That rain makes the clay workable.
Nz south of the south island, here. Rain for days. Floods further north , to continue until Monday. And frosts, let's not forget those, wrecking my garden! That was b4 the rain. Love your pruning. I would like to see a whole project, no its not boring, its interesting, how others do things. We each seem to do the same thing but different. I find that quite fascinating. Lovely to see the garden flourishing.
Be careful with that flooding🙏
Great tutorial, Connecticut went from 90's last week to memorial week day time high 50's and nights were in the mid 40's .with rain throughout the weekend. Greatful for the sun Memorial day afternoon ❤
Love this video!!! Thanks for sharing. I am going to rethink my whole garden and get my pruners ready to go as soon as I finish watching.
Terrific!
Love your channel! In Rock Falls, WI we had hail and big snow flurries last week and this week it is supposed to be 85! Crazy!!!! I have started to create some negative space in my gardens, and I love it.
I literally stopped this video half way through and went outside to make one of my lilacs more airy at the bottom and expose the trunks. I looks beautiful that way and all the plants around it look more beautiful as well. Just as you said it would! Thank you! 💕
I purchased two 14” hobo baskets during your QVC premier. The material is fantastic! They look great in the garden. I just ordered the 11” to have at the ready at my garage door. 💜
I have to agree… I think they’re pretty fabulous!
NJ here.....non stop rain off and on and temps in the 40s for the past 3 days....horrible! Looking forward to seeing the SUN !!!
Those 2 tone hunter boots are rare! Thanks for showing us!
Linda I am getting ready to help my daughter plan the landscape at the house she bought. She is so excited to follow in my footsteps with self taught landscaping and gardening. And I’m excited to help her. Your videos are hugely helpful now in planting her garden as they have been in working in my garden over the past several years since I “discovered” you.
Just wanted you to know that this video about negative space really helped me change my thought process for my own garden. Last season I pruned up several old Weigela bushes and a big old Holly and several small trees. I am so happy with the results. Thanks!
🙏🙏🙏🥰
I had no idea what negative space was in a garden. So excited to have learned this important tip. Thanks for sharing look forward to creating new interest in my garden.
This is like "drawing on the right side of the brain" for gardeners! Very interesting video. I'm not a new gardener, but now I'm going to go look at my garden and study the negative spaces. I already know I need to do a lot of pruning. Thanks!
Cannot wait for the rain to stop so I can get out there and start to work. Thank you so helpful.
Yes! Yes! Creating negative space is one of those tricks that make us look like genius gardeners. I also prize this practice for positive stress relief. I have recently been thinking about when/where it is best to use gravel and/or mulch. Why would one type be preferred over another. Would love to hear your decision making progress on this topic.
Wonky weather in Michigan! Moderate drought. Two weeks in May in the 80’s then this week cold, windy even 30’s at night. Today is perfect Michigan spring, an azure cloudless sky. Low 70’s, no wind. PERFECT DAY
Same here in NE Wisconsin, although I don’t think this is anything abnormal for the Upper Midwest. It is always a bit of a rollercoaster this time of year 😂 What was abnormal is that we didn’t have a mid-April blizzard like we usually do. My husband and I have also noticed the lilacs and spirea have blossomed earlier than usual.
Hi Linda, love your programme. May here in Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK has been extra cold and wet. The sun has now appeared thankfully! Diane
Thanks for sharing and teaching on how to trim and have negative spaces! Looks very nice! Good job!
Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers! You deserve it!! 😍😊👏🤟🌺
I love how it looks when you open up the area around plants. I now plan to do that. Yaaay!! 🌺 Alabama
Yes!🙋♀️
I had a huge hedge of thick thick privet in the back yard and saw your video on this last year. I now how several nice little privet trees instead of an ugly hedge! I still have another section to do but love the look (just wish they didn't have so many suckers coming up all the time. I will eventually remove these but for now they bring me joy till I can afford to replace them. Never miss one of your videos! Have learned so much from you! Thank you!
Hi Linda. Thanks for being so generous with your experience. This weekend, I put your negative-space tips to use in my garden, including clearing out all the lower growth on a huge, overgrown pussy willow at the top on my water feature. The difference is simply amazing. I wish I could figure out how to share a picture here. Thanks again. All my best, Laura.
Negative space makes great sense. I have permanent back injuries but never thought about back brace while gardening. I’m not really lifting much. Getting mine out! Thank you so much fir all these tips!
So glad u r taking care of yourself. I too wear back support when needed. You always look so attractive. Thank you for your inspiration. I so enjoy your videos!☺
Love your videos, Linda, so inspiring! I'm in the Greater Montreal Area, Quebec, Canada and we've had a very unusual, early, hot and dry spring so far!
Yea, Linda, I totally agree with your negative space. This is the first time I learn the verbiage of negative space. I have just trimmed and pruned some of my bushes and trees with the same concept. Since I like bonsai look and have created a few, I use that same concept for my garden. That is to create some negative space to reveal the beauty of the tree or bushes in addition to create the air flow for a healthy shrub. That is another reason I really enjoy seeing your topiaries. I will be creating some of mine. When I see any tree that could be a great candidate, I will purchase it. I have learned a lot from your videos and really appreciate your daily walk as well. It is always a pleasure to walk with you. Have a blessed weekend!
🙏🙏🙏🙏
I live in North Alabama and we've had one of the coolest Springs in memory. I have thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it!!
Cool/cold and overcast in northeast Texas much of May. I loved this video!! Great examples of the impact of creating negative space.
Kansas its been super rainy but clear this afternoon. You inspired me to prune some shrubs and pull up some mint that was taking over my day lily garden! I really enjoy your videos!
Enjoyed the before/after pruning demo!
Loved this video💕 My Pilates instructor always said you can twist or bend but you can’t do them both at the same time. She also said motion is lotion🤣 Both of these I found to be true. Hope your back is better🌿
Linda- Once again Thank You! Not just for the gardening, that would be more than enough, but for your your common sense gardening which
then flows over into my life and helps me so much. I am also now passionate about my own garden (which is a super shock).
In addition, I absolutely love your very descriptive vocabulary and often refer to Webster’s so I can add some new words to my vocabulary too~ so I’m learning with you in ALL sorts of ways. ❤️
You are a gem, an absolute gem!!
And what a kind hearted soul you are to share that sweet comment!
San Antonio Texas, we’re having the same weather as you , lots of rain, my garden is starting to look lush and beautiful !🌱🪴You’re my inspiration.😊 Thank you for all your ideas.💕
Thank you for a important garden lesson as well as life!
Hi Linda, I pruned a Viburnum just this morning using your methods. It looks fabulous now. I am also in Michigan like Mindy. The weather has been crazy here, my furnace has been running this week. Today was beautiful and I spent most of my day outside! Have a fabulous week!
@@taylorsmith7533 Good Morning to YOU!
Good morning Linda...I watched a video of yours recently that was posted about 10 months ago. You mentioned doing a video on your garden ornamentals. I haven't been able to find that episode. Can you post a link to that video? Thank you
Tulsa here....soggy an cool!! Love the cool !!! Negative space!! I have become acquainted with negative space when my beautiful Roses succumbed to the virus!! Have waited the period of time to try them again because I need the everblooming summer for my pleasure !!! Also as my magnolia”Janes” took off ...I uncovered their trunk area (same as my crepe myrtle) in order to add some space for other beauties to be tucked in and show off!!! I am very happy with all of this extra “peeking room” in and around the garden!!! Also, watched your live debut on QVC and missed out on the Avocados...but will try again!!!☺️
North Texas where it has rained sooo much this spring! Everything is so green but VERY buggy! Love your garden and your show.
Yup!!
CT fan here, rainy and cold weekend for us. Watching golf and your sunny weather is bringing me sunshine. Hoping to have a nice weekend, but it is what it is... 😫
Memorial weekend was a wash out! 3 inches old rain in 3 days. Temps hovering over 48-49 F. After having 90’s temps for the past 3 weeks. Silver lining- rain was desperately needed. Lovely video!
Hello from WI! Some days have been in the 70-80’s, last few nights 30s with frost advisory! Crazy! Just discovered your channel a month ago. I really enjoy it!!
Really enjoy your videos Linda .....I learn something new each time esp since I am a new gardener .
We had an unusually cool, and long Spring in Orlando, Florida. Perfect weather, although Summer is settling in. My sister-in-law was talking about how she found pruning to be therapeutic so I recommended your page to her. New fan in the making! Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for the referral!
Thank you Linda! You inspired me to have a go at “limbing up” a snowball viburnum. I purchased one and will re visit your video before I start the process.
West Texas here we’ve had a few scattered showers really need more... love 💕 💕 your videos I’m hooked!
I have a tendency to raise the crowns on everything in my garden too, I can’t help myself! And yes I find bending slightly forward is the most strain on my back too so that back brace is a really good idea. Love the fashion section at the end Linda, I always love your outfits.
Thank you girl!
Inspired by this Linda!!! I pruned my currant bush and I love the look of the tall trunks as well as the plants underneath that I can now see :))) Thank you Linda!
Great video as usual Linda! We are heading to 100 degrees today and 106 tomorrow in NorCal! On another note, my daughter is concerned about my “plant and all things garden addiction” 😂 have a blessed day!
Oh my! On both counts?!
I do all the trimming in my yard. Last week I removed several branches from the understory of a lilac in the back corner. It was difficult to mow around, and it was shading a bridal veil shrub so much that one side didn't bloom. It took only about 10 minutes to remove several low hanging branches with a lopper, and it opened the space up and looked like a custom Bonsai! The whole corner area felt like the energy changed. All that from just a little pruning. Who knew? You did! Love your videos! 💜
Your collar up look is great on you! Not everyone can do it, but you look chic with it up!
I love negative space!!! So effective and interesting!!
Hi Linda, good idea to redecorate overgrown areas. I also wear an elastic brace. Its a smart idea for garden work. Germany's weather has been the coldest since the '80s ( minus 18 Celsius) now high 70's F and quite cold at night. Wish you lots of sunshine and a wonderful summer without weeds!!😃 🙂 👋
You too Martha!
Hello Linda and Stewart Oh my it has been raining since Friday here in New Jersey. Thank you for all your wonderful tips . They are very helpful. So until next time God Bless you and Stewart and have a Blessed Memorial Day and Stay Safe my dear Friends. 💚😊💚😊💚😊💚
Love the negative space! Sometimes I think we tend to clutter up our lives with too many things...including in the garden. Your very correct when you speak about making a statement! Always feels good to give things a trim to more clean lines and open spaces! 🌺🌹Omaha, NE has been a very cool, cloudy, rainy spring! Needed the moisture really bad so not complaining there. But let's get things warmed up a bit around here!💕 Love your videos!
💞
Every time I hear you say ‘anecdotally’ I smile. I just wait for it in every video. It’s gotta be your favourite word. :)
It’s one of them lol!
Mobile, Al. we had a wonderfully long Spring. Now we're in the high 80s which is normal for this time of year. Love watching you prune out some. Your garden is my dream garden but having a husband who spent his life in construction he likes everything lined up which I've had to fight for almost 30 years. I fell in love with your style approx. 30 years ago when I took out a book at library called 'The Well Placed Weed' by Ryan Gainey. It's more of a garden design, indoors and out than how to book but something I think you'd love if you've never seen it.
Oh I am very familiar with the book and with Ryan! Quite a character he was LOL!
So so helpful! Your design tips are the content I need. I don't know enough to be able to glean just by seeing. I need your explanations as well. Thank you for sharing your design style tips!
