Last summer the AC clutch on my fiance's 2017 F150 started coming apart while we were on a trip, throwing black rubber stuff all around near the compressor and making a high pitched sound. The AC went out since it lost the refrigerant. Truck only had about 32,000 miles on it at the time but was out of warranty due to the age of the vehicle. Luckily it didn't lock up the clutch so we could still drive it.
We found out that none of the independent shops locally or in surrounding towns had the equipment to service a 1234yf system so she had to take it to the dealer for repair. All of the shops said that the equipment to service this new system was very expensive as was the refrigerant and that they weren't seeing enough business on this system yet to justify spending the money for the equipment and refrigerant.

I like your approach to fault finding. Paramount in all repairs. My favorite saying is spending 90 PC of repairs is finding the correct problem then anyone can fix It!

Introduced 6-7 years ago and shops still have not upgraded their tools. I get it, its expensive on capital purchase. But its time.

Same thing with my 09 but everything is fine but my cliche is not kicking in and they bypass the clutch and does turn on turns cold but o my if they turn it on manually took to 4 shops and all can’t figure it out

A lot of automotive shops don’t really understand the heating and air systems in automotive and depend too much on the big machine but just because you don’t have a big shop machine should you be stopped from working on a car. If they knew how it really works than they would be able to to do it.

For AC diagnosis and scanner is the last thing that is needed to be first.
1: Eyes 👀 are your first primary quick scan before wasting time doing anything else
2: and we are in the 21st going into the 22nd century, a set of gauges that are analog. Most of us in the trade. Haven’t used in almost 20 years.. hey simple AC fitting coupling attached to a Bluetooth pressure transducer simply connected to the vehicle will instantly tell you that you have pressure over or under the pressure switch safety cut in a cut out pressure point.
I get work from other shops like this all the time who attempt to use a scanner to diagnose AC .
Unfortunately, the majority of aftermarket scanners give little and some absolutely no diagnosis features to connect to temperature sensors or pressure sensors in the system. Let alone what’s even more important is the ability to actually drive the compressor control solenoid valve on the compressor on variable displacement, compressors to test that circuit . .

      I would disagree obviously.
To rebuttal point 1: Every car we touch we do a full system scan. So I'm holding a tool that can give me all the necessary information as well as the scan. it was very clear in the data that the issue was low refrigerant, I think you missed the point was that the information can be found even without the proper gauges and evacuation/recovery equipment.
Rebuttal to Point 2: Why get a transducer when there is one already on the car, you can see it in data.
This was a car from another shop that couldn't use a scan tool or visual inspection to get the answer.
Not sure what scan tools you are using but we had everything we needed right there.

@@L1Training many Scans tool in many shop unfortunately don’t give AC DATA. Most sc diagnostic can be done with your fingers tips just touching lines inlet and outlets of compressor, condenser, evaporator. With out gauges or scan tool. The difference between experience and proper training and lack of experience in proper training..

Is the Autel 919 a good addition to the use where the verus edge lacks?

Sad stuff. Almost zero need for a scanner. Just a little effort was all that was needed.
