    I know this video is several years old, so I hope you see this comment. I have this set [24 set] and really was not sure about the best way to use it. Really useful information all the way through this video, thank you for that! I feel a little more brave now! I'm also very happy to have found your channel!

    I was on the Derwent website and they rate all the colors for lightfastness. It seems like the lightfastness issue is limited to specific colors and not the whole kit. If you hover over each color it shows the lightfastness rating my understanding is that 7+ is very lightfast. There are some 3 and 4 ratings on specific colors which is where people are having a problem but there are others that are fine.

      Thanks. They recommend using the most current lightfast chart which show they are all lightfast with only a few at 6 and the rest at 7 or 8. Hopefully this means they have changed…something. What do you think?

    Thank you sooooo much! I was about to buy a set for my portrait business. GRACIOUS! If it is not light fast and fades out it is of no use to me at all. You just saved me money and you saved my reputation because I advertise all work as archival portraits!

    I've had the 12 set of these for a while and I love using these for an initial landscape sketch for a watercolor. I agree that once you add water it's like butter no matter the directionality of the marks. Because of the lack of lightfastness you mentioned, I'd only use these for an initial sketch for a water media based painting or maybe on watercolor greeting cards.They are very soft and the lifting is definitely reminiscent of a traditional watercolor over the permanence of the Inktense.

    These are great pencils. I made a portrait with these for my mum, which is hanging in her bedroom framed under glass. I didn't notice any fading on it, but perhaps it was very gradual? It's been over 7 years and it still shows reds and purples. Also, while painting with them I noticed I get better results adding water to them using a wet q-tip, which allows me to handle the layers of paint with more control than a watercolour brush. It lifts colour better as well, being absorbent cotton.

      +Assaf Shtilman That is great to hear. Your work is beautiful! I have to wonder if the people who had their work fade when not exposed to light used bad paper or if they were stored in the heat in the trunk of their cars. I will be testing it out myself soon. Fingers crossed my results are as good as yours! BTW your portrait looks beautiful!!

    Before experimenting with these pencils, I watched a few videos. On 03/03/21, upon watching this Lachri Fine Art video, as you can imagine, I became very concerned about LIGHT FASTNESS. So I googled a number of REVIEWS. There was overwhelming agreement that is completely contradictory to what the above demonstration claims. Perhaps, since the above demonstration was posted in 2015, Derwent addressed the issue. However, having been familiar with Derwent products for many yeas, it struck me as highly unusual that they would release a product with such inconsistency in LIGHT FASTNESS. I will post a quote from one such review. and I repeat, THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF REVIEWS AGREE WITH REGARD TO LIGHT FASTNESS!
    "Light fastness is a very important factor for all artists, including coloured pencil artists, Derwent seem to take this matter very seriously and have certainly done an excellent job with the Graphitint range. Derwent range their products on a scale of 0-8 for lightfastness, with 6 and above being considered very light fast. In the 24 set of Derwent Graphitint, 19 of them are rated 6 and above, which is an excellent ratio in my opinion."
    --------------------
    p.s. I will have to see which 5, of 24, are rated below 6, and what are they rated at.
    p.p.s - So, the following link will display DERWENT''S LIGHT FASTNESS CHART. ALL 24 RATED 6 OR BETTER!

      +Lachri Fine Art Yes, I used some greens, black, and the reddish browns to sketch some moss covered stones and bricks. Then went over it with a water brush. I don't see any shift in color compared to the picture I took right after I finished, either. I wonder if maybe there was a faulty batch that somehow made it through.

    these are like buttah! definite shame about the light fastness though. I've only done one tiny drawing with them in a sketchbook but it looks fine after about 4 months. It was blues and grays. I don't know if the different colors have a different lightfastness though. Do you know of any similar products with better staying power? I've been eyeing the Derwent tinted charcoal for that same muted effect.

  • @UnmaskArt
    @UnmaskArt 8 років тому +1

    Goodness, those look so rad. But I kind of lose interest if the lightfastness turns out to be as bad as you heard. Kind of a bummer if so. You think there is any way around it? The colors are so muted and soft I just love that look.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 років тому +4

      +Unmask Art Yeah, I loved the muted look too. I'm going to test them with UV spray and behind UV glass, but if they are in fact fading in people's sketchbooks when not exposed to light, I don't see how UV products will help. I will update everyone as I test stuff though :)

    Hi Lisa! I would like to hear what kind of light you use in your art studio. I have problems with finding the light source that reflects the true colors and my coloring looks better in the light from my daylight led lamps than it look during the day in the sunlight. I know that color rendering index on the bulbs has to have high value - as close to 100 as possible, but my lamp has a value >90 and still there is a difference between the coloring at daytime and at nighttime. Can you please give me some advice how to find a solution to this problem, because finding of the correct colorvalue is of the most importance to me.

  • @piedcamelart

    I miss the graphitints that I had, need to get some again. In my experience, because they are those muted, kinda gritty colors, I think they lend themselves well to darker, gritty themes.
    If you do go the route of using them for studies and sketches though, there have been artists who have been selling printed mini books of such sketches, studies, etc. I don't know if you would consider doing something like that, but it's something that came to mind.

    i'm sorry about the fading, i've not noticed yet because i've only used them for a little while, for field sketches because the colours are so realistic and easy to mix with normal sketching pencils (that's how i did my detail) and coloured pencils (eg gorse flowers (bright yellow in a greyish landscape))

    Do you have an opinion on regular watercolor pencil brands? I've used the Kimberley's, Artist Loft, and Faber Castell Aquarelle so far. Lisa, this is a great review. It bothers me that these and the Inktense are not lightfast. I don't know if a UV spray finish would help. I guess you and I need to test these.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 років тому +4

      +Michael Parry I'm going to test them. I don't have a lot of hope for the UV glass or UV sprays to help with these though if they were in fact fading within people's sketchpads when not exposed to light. Of course there could have been other variables that caused that to happen but it's a bit worrying. I will test them behind both uv glass and spray though and update everyone with the results after next summer :)

  • @justinehennessy8790
    @justinehennessy8790 7 років тому

    Lisa - have you tested these for lightfastness yet? I bought these in 2012 and the project I did with them has faded. Some people claim Derwent improved these since the initial reports of lightfast problems but I don't find any info on the Derwent site other than the chart that claims excellent lightfastness for the colors I used. Justine

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  7 років тому +5

      Mine has not been exposed to light at all but I can say it's not faded one bit. I read where some swore they faded in their notebooks where they too were not exposed to light but I have to wonder if they were using crappy paper or left the work in the hot car or if some other factor was involved because fading in the dark wouldn't be a lightfast issue but something else entirely. I was glad to see though that a year later mine looks the same.

    • @justinehennessy8790
      @justinehennessy8790 7 років тому

      Hi Lisa , thanks for your reply. The fading issue info can be found here including the link to Kate Johnson's faded sketchbook page. rozwoundup.typepad.com/roz_wound_up/2008/10/derwent-graphit.html. From 2008. Some people say that Derwent improved the pencils since then. I bought them in 2012 for a project that's been in a frame on the wall since then using graphite and graphitint colors rated lightfast by Derwent. The project has faded. I can't find any announcements by Derwent that these pencils were improved. So I was wondering if you had followed up with any testing since you have bought these pencils more recently. Justine

  • @josephinewinter
    @josephinewinter 8 років тому

    NB if they fade after not being exposed to light, then light can't be making them fade, so it's not a light-fast-ness problem but some chemical degradation?

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 років тому

      +Josephine Winter Yeah, in which case that's pretty bad. but that made me question if it was the paper the other artists had used because I'm reading here how many have not had that problem. Mine isn't that old, but it's not faded at all yet. Some of the ones I read said within months they were completely faded. I really wish I knew the conditions they were keeping it in. I guess time will tell on my own :)

    The colours are UNIQUE, those who want a larger set risk losing the perfect palette! Never heard about the fading, got to see if I can find a review regarding that topic. They are actually GRAPHITE TINT pencils to use by graphite artist's who are purists and insist on using only graphite in their work. They are not colour pencils, not watercolours by any means. They are best when used for what they are made to do. Derwent are said to be used for landscapes, wildlife, etc. Spectrum Noir tinted graphite is said to be better for potraites.

      I'm honestly not even sure how much I believe the fading claims anymore. Nothing I've painted with these has faded at all after 4 years. They were not exposed to sunlight, but people were claiming they faded when never exposed to light within months. 4 years isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of what is archival, but it's sure not the several months that people were claiming. I now think they either used non-acid-free paper or had some sort of impurities in the water they used that caused the issues. Or they just lied, who knows.

      @@Lachri On the tin Derwent gives the LF of each pencil. Some are better than others. I like the openness, companies on occasion give the LF of sets, but not the pencils in the set.

    About the lightfastness of these pencils, in a tin of 24, 17 are rated between 7 and 8. According to Derwent, "Lightfastness rating = 3,4 - FAIR, MODERATE | 5,6 - GOOD, VERY GOOD | 7,8 - EXCELLENT." So, it is just a matter of a few words to search and find the answer to make more accurate claims.

      Yes, but once water is added we don't know what those numbers are. Derwent does not test once water has been added. That's what we're talking about here. To be fair, I question the reports I've read from those claiming they faded within months. We have no idea what paper or type of water was used.

      +joy gilley I loved that about these. They are great for stormy skies. Some of the colors can be much more bold (the reds and purples) but I didn't use them that way :D
