My review today focuses on the popular Derwent Graphitint range, the range is relatively small in numbers, however the colours are to die for and unsurpassed by many other watersoluable pencils on the market; but are they worth the investment? are you likely to use them on a painting and are they a quality product? lets find out.
To begin with, the specifics of the medium should be covered, closely followed by the performance. Unfortunately, and I use the term unfortunately due to the delectable colour palette, there are only twenty four colours in the Derwent Graphitint range. However, this is another case of be careful what you wish for, if this range, as is the same issue with the Derwent Drawing Range, was increased, then you would start to lose the absolute uniqueness of the colour range, turning both sets into ordinary run of the mill pencil sets.

Hi Harry, great video! 😆 I purchased these about 6 months ago. I got them specifically because of the wonderful muted colors. I haven't tried them yet, but I will. 😉 I got them to go along with my burnings. I was bummed to hear what others said about their lightfastness, some claiming to have them fade in sketch books kept closed. I will be trying a UV spray over them to see if that helps. Of course, it was the purples and reds that are lower. I hope all is going as well as it can for you. I know how it is trying to get videos made when you hurt like hell, take your time my friend.
Hi Valarie, thank you so much for the comment and you should absolutely try them, they are fantastic and the colours are just amazing. With regards to the lightfastness, it is always really difficult to determine because if the company say they are a certain rating of lightfast, the only way we can see if they are right is by holding the same testing that they do.
I have heard Lisa from Lachri talk about lightfastness a lot and she says that this type of testing really needs to be done over longer periods, like 6 months to a year or longer. I think Derwent use the Blue Wool lightfast test. Actually I am going to do a lot more research on this subject and write about it. Talk to you soon Val and thanks a million.

Thanks for the review, have you tested out there blend ability without water, and erase ability? I would like to use these as regular graphite pencils, I'm not really interested in the water park. Just wanted some muted colors in my graphite sketching. I love the way graphite blends but wanted some thing other than pastel pencils or charcoal
Beautiful muted colours! Was wondering, you have given so many reviews on products perhaps starting to do at least one tutorial on each item you have reviewed would be a good idea. Would look forward to seeing you properly use each product.
I love Lisa's whales painting (Lachri Fine Art) using these. Now that you have shown us the swatches, they almost look metallic. Even with the water on them they seem to have more of a sheen than Derwent's actual metallic pencils. The shades are great. I just love the picture on the tin.
I'm so rubbish at actually drawing though, I am not sure I can justify playing with these yet. But they are interesting to look at. They would be perfect for creating night time scenes.

There are wonderful UV sprays that are available for professional artists today. These newer and finer brands make issues with lightfastness almost a non-issue. I would love to see some full scale landscapes using these. I have just received a set of 24 today and am going to play a bit. Thanks for all you do. I find your reviews very interesting and informative.
Judith A Rowland hi Judith it is funny you say that, I am actually half way through a landscape painting using these. It is from a photo I took of my wife and I favourite place in the world which is Grange in the Lake District close to Keswick. We go there all the time and have taken our children there from being babies, so it is a place of so much significance for us. Any way I am recording it as a speed painting and will show it once done. Thank you so much for your comment and stopping by and you are so right about the lightfast issues. I am researching the lightfast testing that is done, how it’s done and loads of other things about it. Once I have all the information I will be doing a video on the different systems used for testing.
Lucky me.! Just this second I began test swatching my colors............Can't wait. I think these will be very, very interesting as time goes by. I have seen some wonderful animal and seascapes..........Landscapes should be stunning..........and I am sincere about enjoying the great care and attention you pay to your reviews and demos. I DO HAVE A SPECIAL REQUEST..........Can you contact Derwent and find out why they offer a mini intro to a product by "Fiona?" and then drop off before she is finished. Everything is left hanging and it can be very frustrating................I would much rather have a full demo from them and then follow ups by experts such as yourself......which expand and explain possibilities.
I love these pencils, I've used them for years. They are unsurpassed for doing watercolor landscapes. This reminds me, I need to replace a lot of my pencils!!!
Wonderful. Do you have any lightfastness issues? I wonder if the people who have problems used an inferior substrate.
Yes I would say use water ,the colours are brilliant when wet completely different when dry dull

I love the colors too. But I would love to have a better yellow and a better red. (The “Port” you demonstrated is the closest it comes to red.) I do want to do landscapes with them, but red and yellow do happen in landscapes! (I’ve resorted to using other watersoluble pencils for those.)
I'm not sure how it works but if you pick up the pigment with your brush straight from the lead of your graphitint, the colours you get are more vibrant. I can get yellows and reds that way.
These pencils are very interesting. I do like Derwent products so I'm going to have to give this a try. Have you tried the Graphitones? They are watersoluble graphite and are pure sticks instead of having wood casing. Love using them since they make great values on sketching.
Prismatic hi Prismatic, do you mean the Derwent Aquatones? They are full sticks of pigment, like big crayons? If these are Ines you like, you may need to stock up. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm almost certain I read somewhere that Derwent might be discontinuing this range. I hope I'm wrong because this is a nice range, for kids and adults alike, I also know a lot of crafters like them. I do have a small set of these and will be reviewing them but I have a few other reviews first.
I have heard of the Aquatones and wanted to pick up a few but they are out of my reach and are very expensive currently. I did hear they were discontinuing them so maybe that is why. The Graphitones are their graphite version. They look similar and work the same but are used for sketching and getting really dark values.
I have a few Graphitones. I love them. They don't have color, but there is a good range of graphite tones.

@@TheArtGearGuide It's older & not as awesome as your Staedtler Tinted Watercolour Pencils video. But, still very informative & has helped me make a decision, so thank you, once again! (Certainly, I think it would be fun to see a comparison of the different tinted graphite pencils video!)
You forgot to test erasing. Kind of important when reviewing a pencil I would have thought... :/
