They said in an interview when they first started creating the game, there were no digital assets in the market pertaining to Chinese temples for UE5. So they literally went around all over China scanning historical temples, I believe the count was well over 60 across the whole country. So when you see a visually stunning temple (especially in chapter 3) with an absurd amount of details. That’s because it’s straight out of a historical site. Heck even the engravings can be scanned and found in scriptures and buddhist hymns. That is why it has such an insane amount of support from Chinese players, because they recognize the effort Game Science put into details and historical correctness.
Yes they did, there are numerous grottos and temples with painting and statues of the beasts. Now some of these places are tourists attractions to match the theme of Black Myth : Wukong. These people are capitalists as hell :)
@@danielcheng769 Old temples dude. One example, check out the Mogao cave Temple in Dun Huang. The journey to the West is based on the true story of a Tang monk who went to India to learn about Buddism. He travelled mostly along the ancient silk road. "...because we want to make money with micor transactions" thats why they said it. Single Player games require a lot of effort but you buy it once, play it, finish it and tahts it, they dont want that, hence Dota, world of tanks WoW ....
Crazy what can be done when someone isn’t forcing their ideology or agenda in a game. Concord and Dustborn has sent a very very clear message. So now it’s East vs. West will the West wake up in time to save development, or will the East have a walk in the park taking over the industry as they will have none of the fodder in their games.
100% Trying to walk that tightrope between appeasing an overly oppressive government, whilst reaching a huge player base, all while dropping your first game. Isn't an easy dance. They have stood on their values and delivered a beautiful game. Best 60$ I've spent in a while.
I’m disappointed there’s not much talk about the art design. It’s modeling Of actual Chinese historical sites/relics is next level, adds another realm of visual depth that’s rarely seen. Also the story deserves some credit (Not just a revenge story). But maybe these things are hard to get for a western audience, but it’s quite obvious from an Asian perspective.
No MTX, no battlepass, no DLC, no expasion. No content being cut off the game to add for money latter. That's how you make money. Make a GOOD GAME AND COMPLETE. No all games need to be live services. The industry need more games and less services. The industry needs more complete package instead of cut content.
yet a mobile games with 50% of the effort still makes 5x more than wukong in terms of money. lmao, also the industry prob would do more games like this but the people wont pay 3x the price of the game. In China u can have min. wage developers that also take a lot of crunch time. so i would overthink it.

For some weird bizarre reason, people are indeed trying to write off chinese players. But why? In my point of view, another cultures and devs making new single players driven games without any BS is a win to any person that like video games on the whole planet. It's a win/win situation here.
It's weird, people shit on the CCP for it's very dystopian censorship and that's fine, but it's crickets on how western media picks and chooses what we hear too. It's this weird toxic nationalism masquerading as patriotism looking down on other people, the Chinese people are not their government, they just are.
It has to do with the narrative around the game. Lots of culture war stuff causing one side to want to over hype the success of the game and the other side to play it down. One side arguing "see none of that woke stuff and a game becomes super popular" and the other side arguing back "it's popularity is mostly from it being a successful Chinese game played mostly by Chinese players".
Everyone else? My guy half of the top peak concurrent player list on steam released in just the last like 3-4 years. The same greatness is happening off steam as well with titles like Zelda's new sequel, Paper Mario remaster, and tons of others.
To be fair this game is a really big moment for China. Not only is it a really awesome looking representation of Journey to the West (basically China’s equivalent to something like Heracles or Thor), but it’s also a very impressive AAA title in its own right. So it’s not really surprising that China would support something like this coming from their own country. With that being said I’m still surprised on how much this did in one day (also people on both sides need to stop shoving western politics into this game. China from what I’ve seen doesn’t give a damn about the current western culture war).
@@TheAlmighty972 I haven’t played this game yet (my backlog is kind of stacked right now) so I can’t really refute or support your claim, but that’s not my point. My point is that China has never really had a AAA title of this scale before and no less adapting one of their most celebrated mythological stories. I’m sure it has its flaws here and there but that’s for another discussion.
That's true, but I still can't held my laugh when a Tuber talk about "he wants Trump and Harris compete to jump into a waterfall for getting the seat in white house" 🤣🤣🤣
I find it incredible that out of all the different people I’ve seen talk about this game none of them so much as mention the incredible post chapter animations and interactive illustrations. The artistry on display in BM:W is just next level stuff. And to think this is their first game.

People used to complain about China's gaming and regulation policy when it comes to predatory practice in the game industry...now Black Myth: Pure Game and Entertainment like it used to, no DLC, no battlepass, no gamestore, no predictory nonsense = PURE ENTERTAINMENT! Thanks China for bringing the soul back to the gaming industry!
Hot take: Linear is way better than open world in MOST cases, linear generally = good level design and less grind. I'm so tired of open world bloat, a good example of this is The Shadow of The Tomb Raider where the previous games felt so much more enjoyable. The open world exception would obviously be Elden Ring or Cyberpunk, where they actually did open world spectacularly.
The game got marketed incredibly successfully in China and it is based on a story that is very dear to the peoples heart. Add that to the fact that it is actually quite decent the formula for success has be realised. AAA devlopers have left a nice hole in the market which others are gladly taking advantage of.
WHO THE EFF CARES WHO MADE THE GAME? The bigger picture is that the game doesn’t include microtransactions, isn’t a live service, doesn’t have pay-to-win mechanics, lacks day-one DLC, doesn’t feature a battle pass, doesn’t withhold content to be sold later, and avoids content hidden behind special editions. It’s also not a "gacha" game. And thank goodness it’s not burdened with diverse or "woke" nonsense. Games like Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and this one are the kinds we need to support and celebrate. There’s no point debating the nationality of the player base. Even if you don’t like the game, be positive and happy about its success. Hopefully, it will encourage developers and publishers to focus on creating good games rather than the GAAS (Games as a Service) content we’re force-fed (pun intended-who gets it?).

Correction: this game is not a "boss rush." Chapter one (of six) has a large amount of bosses and is borderline a boss rush, but after that it opens up significantly and the boss-to-exploration ratio becomes close to what you'd expect from the average souls-like. The game also becomes much less linear after chapter one.
@@88888888Rocket1 I think he means it only took him one try to kill some of the bosses (not that he literally killed the boss in one hit). This was definitely true for me as well, which helps make the relatively high number of bosses feel less overwhelming. Cause then you also have bosses that are much more challenging and take 10+ tries to beat. Some of the enemies that have boss health bars are closer to what would just be considered very strong enemies in other souls-like games.
Unpopular opinion, I would've personally preferred if the game *was* a boss rush style game. After chapter 1, and especially chapter 3 and onwards, the open world exploration is by far the worst part of this game. There's no rhyme and reason to several locations, entire areas just feel like one giant circle that you go around just to end up where you started and gain nothing from it. If there was less aimless exploration with smaller zones but more condensed content in each zone it honestly would've felt better to me.
I’m surprised people believe the Devs placed those restrictions for reasons entirely their own. They did it to appease the government. It’s not a difficult concept to grasp.
Restricting for their own or the government's doesn't really matter, opinions should be expressed solely on the game's technical aspects and narratives, no need to bring politics and anything non gaming to a video-game.

I guess, the difference between Game Science and the major industry studios is that, they are the devs and creators truly have passions and cares about the players. I think most of devs know what gamers want, but a job is a job, and the company wants this and that. When you fulfill something with a pride and attention to the detail, you manage to get it done well. They are just a small studios staffed about 100 people without much experiences and resources. However, they want to deliver the product. We actually need more studios like them truly care about gamers.
I think being easy is to its credit. I know many people who praise Elden Ring, but nearly none of them finished it. People just get lost on where to go. Or they just get sick of dying and tune out. I think difficulty only has value when it’s fair. I would argue a good boss is good because the mechanics are fun and their attacks are telegraphed adequately. I always thought difficulty should come from the amount of mistakes you’re allowed to make, not dying again and again until you memorize every move set of unpredictable cheap shots.
true which is why dark souls / elden ring are the GOAT. Sure it's hard but nothing is cheap. Cheap to me is when you can't evade certain attack and fromsoft games bosses attacks can be dodged. There are no hit runs for those game for a reason. If you want cheap boss then look at older games like ninja gaiden. Most veteran souls player beat bosses in a few tries.
Well, the hardest Elden ring bosses are all optional. The only actual hard elden ring boss in the main story line is Godfrey. Every other boss is easy compared to the optional ones.
All I’m saying is this game proved all the “people don’t buy single player games” or “modern audiences” crowd is extremely salty rn. Despite the technical issues it faces at launch it’s an absolutely amazing game that in some ways reminds me of how cyberpunk 2077 launched with its issues on console. Those realities in no way take away from it being an amazing game. This game is only gonna get better and I’m happy to see it! And remember this is like their first swing at a triple A game. Superb stuff game science
The Chinese players understand the lore and what's happening inside the game. They know that there will be no sequel but maybe a prequel of Wukong's actual journey.
I'm loving this game so far! I just can't believe the game actually ended up being what they promised and more! I was skeptical the entire time but got a copy as a birthday present and within the first 2 hours I knew we had something special here.
As a non China Chinese here’s some of my thought regarding to player number and positive review The gaming industry in China has been a let down for the past few decades. There’s many broken promises and shitty game came out which honestly just ruined all hype and hope so when this game was announced there were many Chinese are skeptical about it While I don’t have the data, I believe 60 to 70% of the 2 million player are Chinese or Asian who grew up with Journey to the west. So yes the result maybe biased because this is the first good 3A title came from China and it is indeed a good game that many of us has been waiting for the last 30 years. It is more than just a game to us. Some people may think “oh the Chinese boost up the rating because of bias blah blah blah”. There are many other game came from a Chinese developer that’s not as popular. We are human with a brain too we can certainly differentiate a bad game and a good game and this is a darn good game. It maybe a bit higher rated than it should be but in no way this is a bad game or not worth buying at all. Edited: typo
There's nothing wrong with the players mostly being Chinese also. I think everyone is just surprised that there are enough Chinese gamers that something popular in China can immediately shoot to #2 all time concurrent players 😂 With a high enough middle class with disposable income, the Chinese market may soon begin to dictate entertainment in the west.
@@xbmarx of course! I’m just trying to explain why is this game such a big deal in Asia. High player number or not doesn’t change the fact that the game is fun. But it is understandable where the doubt is coming from. Most of us are shock by the number too 😂
So what if they are mostly Chinese/Asian? Every game in the market competes with the same audience. Why separate China’s gamers as if they aren’t valid? If a game is mostly US gamers does it suddenly not matter?
This game has a boss mechanic where bosses only change into second phase if players are able to defeat the boss within a certain time frame. So if you're good and the boss is too easy for you, the boss will get a second phase to make the fight more difficult. If you are struggling and is just barely able to beat the boss, it won't go into second phase and your boss fight ends there.
Listen kids, I'm old enough to experience the early years when Japanese Anime first introduce to western audience. It had similar discourse & controversies b.s like this even without social media, but eventually your mom & pops embrace this foreign pop culture eventough some granny & grandad doesnt like it. so embrace yourself for another eastern invasion, this time it would come from China with their game based culture like Wukong 😂
I like how the combat animations look nice, and are not crazy flash-bang over the top effects like many games have. I'm sure some players would rather have a female character, but that doesn't seem to matter since the game is good. Thumbs up.
To understand the story, please check Portraits after you beat enemies and bosses. They are really good. Also if you read Journey to the west before, there are tons of estern eggs there.

Remember when those AAAA devs were all like "Single Player games are dead"?
Outside of CoD and the few popular F2P games, the vast majority of games are single player. Even AAA games

The fact that a SIngleplayer game could have a battlepass is criminal

Crazy what can be done when someone isn’t forcing their ideology or agenda in a game. Concord and Dustborn has sent a very very clear message. So now it’s East vs. West will the West wake up in time to save development, or will the East have a walk in the park taking over the industry as they will have none of the fodder in their games.
100% Trying to walk that tightrope between appeasing an overly oppressive government, whilst reaching a huge player base, all while dropping your first game. Isn't an easy dance. They have stood on their values and delivered a beautiful game. Best 60$ I've spent in a while.

Thank you for the comment. What about this guy suggesting that he one shot most of the bosses?
The game is F E N O M E N A L . There has not been a game of such a quality in a long time. The game couldnt be better 10/10!
I’m surprised people believe the Devs placed those restrictions for reasons entirely their own. They did it to appease the government. It’s not a difficult concept to grasp.
Yeah this. Chinese goverment is no joke.
It’s wild how we’re already starting to move on from Covid-19 but CCP had to drag it back to the spotlight once again like it’s still a big deal.
Restricting for their own or the government's doesn't really matter, opinions should be expressed solely on the game's technical aspects and narratives, no need to bring politics and anything non gaming to a video-game.
Funny thing is that they didn't. It was their western publisher, not the devs
@@MrDarkKorner Yeah honestly the people bashing it are so out of touch and don't want games to be fun. They demand narratives, which is why western AAA gaming is floundering so badly.
who ever thought simply making a good game will make people play it.
i think even if the graphics looks like darks souls people will still play it because its fun.
I can feel the enthusiasm in the ad read 😂
lol for real. Such low energy haha.

One more thing i want to add, success in gaming industrial is HARD people, not easy. Sure everyone knows elden ring, but how many played demonsouls??? Bmw is their FIRST GAME, it will take sometime for the dev to really take off, all they needed is some workable money, thats it.
原始初期「悟空」的文化來自中國.日本後來也運用了「悟空」
hope all this positive talk about the game reaches the devs. Good for them. Success in the purest form!
I have it on PS5 and have ZERO issues, also I play on Performance mode. Also been playing since it came out and still on chapter 2. Totally recommend
current peak player count is up to 2.4m now according to steamdb, that's incredible, now I'm curious to see weekend numbers. And of course in a week or 2 reporters will call out how the player numbers have fallen, well its single player experience and naturally as people get the the end of the game and finish it of course player numbers will start to fall, perfectly normal, but watch those 'journalists' try and have their 'ah-ha!' moment
- No micro transaction
- No day 1 pay extra content
-No moderns dayisim
- Designed for the base game to be replayed, not as a vehicle for dlc
- Monkey King lore (are awesome and accurate. They are true to the lore and respect it).
Its quit simple actually... and the western devs are afraid of this becaus they say "its impossible to make games this way any more".
(I wouldn't say there "restrictions" to streamers didn't go over well isn't really true. I would say most don't care and just want to talk about a game. Except the ideological possessed people off course, but most people are tiered of those small minded people, that only think black/white narrowminded and devisive)
I went to Shan'xi province to visit some of the historical sites back in 2021. I was really amazed by those temples from hundreds of years ago built by our ancestors, and I'm proud that GameScience presented not only these national treasures but also our culture to the world via this game. Glad that you enjoyed it, and thanks for the review.
They did a fantastic job with this game I hope to see more from this studio
Prolly a million are from China, but 1.23 million player outside of their homeland is still pretty impressive especially for a 1st outing.
Are people retarded? It's a game about Chinese mythology and culture. Imagine if Greece had a 1.5 billion population and a god of war game was released.

What happened to days when us gamers were outcast nerds? Who didn’t care about politics in gaming? Who just played a game to have fun? We didn’t care if the protagonist had blue hair and 6 nipples. Or was Asian or a crashinbadicoot (whatever the heck that is) we just had fun. Let’s go back to those days. If you can’t keep your political crap out of gaming then you’re not welcome. It’s our last bastion that we can hide in to escape that crap.
This right here! I've been asking myself these questions lately.
Iam not interested in politics, I just love wukong !!!’nn
The consequence of gaming getting more popular is that you have more people bringing more of their real-life baggage into it.
This game about to single-handedly revive the single-player AAA industry
No
Nah. China game boosted by anti woke and China nationalist. Nothing revolutionary
I gotta add another way this thing is like souls games. Big secrets. There's a quest between a grumpy dragon gardener and the medicine guy that unlocks a hub, with a blacksmith who upgrades your gear. I think a lot of people missed that, as a lot of reviews think the equipment progression is just the first level you can craft after defeating a relevant boss. Gosh, I hope there's NG+
I heard there's day-1 NG+ already?
Love that the side quests are not handholding you. Found the hub by myself because I remember the name of the pill-making dog which made me feel pretty good lol
I think the journos reviewers just played the first 2 chapters - which kinda defeats the point of revewing
The invisible walls were the only thing that bothered me in the beginning but after a couple hours I didn't really notice it anymore since the rest of the game is so freaking amazing that I can't stop playing it!
Game's great. Unfortunate that western discussion around it is filled with sinophobia, even in these comments.
It's deserved.

I had a few framerate issues on a pretty ridiculous PC. Lots of invisible walls. Some voices/dialogue is a bit weird. Sometimes the game kinda eats my inputs.
That being said -- I really enjoy the game. The end of chapter story telling is absolutely beautiful. This is just a global W imo. It's kinda funny really. So much anti China propaganda in the US... but at the end of the day, we're all team human and I love being able to appreciate that. I hate how divided we are as a species, and seeing art transcend politics just makes me really happy.
Together we build the world a better place for our offsprings.
In the Chinese classic Journey to the West, the protagonist is Sun Wukong.
Born from a stone monkey, unruly
Travel around the world and learn from teachers. After returning, he took over the mountain and became the king. Organize many monsters (mountains, ghosts, demons and monsters) to defy heaven (where destiny is). Later, destiny could not be violated. Sun Houhou followed Tang Monk to obtain the true scriptures, but he couldn't fight against the heaven. Then join Heavenly Court and rank in the Immortal Class (established by Heavenly Court). In the end, he couldn't stand the bastard shit in heaven and tried to escape. Although not confrontational, he wishes to live in seclusion. But Heaven only gives you two choices: either die or return to Heaven to be imprisoned.
My beef so far is the invisible walls, they just aren't consistent. Sometimes I'm like that looks like it's a path and I'm blocked, okay fine. Then an hour later I try basically the same set up and I can walk through it.
10 million sold in less than a week.
And Sony just released an online multiplayer hero, GaaS that took 8 years to develop, a studio full of ex-Bungie devs, a boatload of cash to buy a studio that had never released a game together.
A game that currently has 580 players on Steam.
Congrats to Wukong and their studio for celebrating the single player game.
Despite the CPU problems the game is very good
What do u mean by cpu problems? With intel u mean?
I have zero issues. I run max settings DLSS all cranked up. Runs perfect
This game begins a new era, if you didn’t drop $2500+ on a rig we will be seeing you on console and if you don’t have the right TV please stay out of any gaming convos the devs are now designing with the TV tech in mind. Things are about to get interesting
It's more of a GPU intensive game I would say. The CPU didn't really outputed that much on my side.

Black Myth Wukong proves the existence of the modern audience. It’s just very, very small.
@@sabin692elden ring is just easy game but good at making the boss intimidate player so they actually dead because of over reacting,
Well, the hardest Elden ring bosses are all optional. The only actual hard elden ring boss in the main story line is Godfrey. Every other boss is easy compared to the optional ones.
Elden ring needs "baby easy mode" so casuals can one shot everything and stop playing cause they one shot everything

Despite the technical issues it faces at launch it’s an absolutely amazing game that in some ways reminds me of how cyberpunk 2077 launched with its issues on console. Those realities in no way take away from it being an amazing game.

To me, this is pre ps2 era. Game for game sake.
The Chinese players understand the lore and what's happening inside the game. They know that there will be no sequel but maybe a prequel of Wukong's actual journey.
Congrats on over 1 million subs! Just noticed!
I'm loving this game so far! I just can't believe the game actually ended up being what they promised and more! I was skeptical the entire time but got a copy as a birthday present and within the first 2 hours I knew we had something special here.
As a non China Chinese here’s some of my thought regarding to player number and positive review
The gaming industry in China has been a let down for the past few decades. There’s many broken promises and shitty game came out which honestly just ruined all hype and hope so when this game was announced there were many Chinese are skeptical about it
While I don’t have the data, I believe 60 to 70% of the 2 million player are Chinese or Asian who grew up with Journey to the west.
"darn" is primarily british slang - It's not really used anywhere else.
@@xbmarx of course! I’m just trying to explain why is this game such a big deal in Asia. High player number or not doesn’t change the fact that the game is fun. But it is understandable where the doubt is coming from. Most of us are shock by the number too 😂
The game is sold well in most countries tho, not just China
So what if they are mostly Chinese/Asian? Every game in the market competes with the same audience. Why separate China’s gamers as if they aren’t valid? If a game is mostly US gamers does it suddenly not matter?
This game has a boss mechanic where bosses only change into second phase if players are able to defeat the boss within a certain time frame.
So if you're good and the boss is too easy for you, the boss will get a second phase to make the fight more difficult.
If you are struggling and is just barely able to beat the boss, it won't go into second phase and your boss fight ends there.
A game that actually is just a game for the players

EV cars and now AAA gaming. Chinese are owning the west right now.
Gamers really don't like being gaslit and told what they should like/should have a problem with.
I like how the combat animations look nice, and are not crazy flash-bang over the top effects like many games have. I'm sure some players would rather have a female character, but that doesn't seem to matter since the game is good. Thumbs up.
Why does it even matter? isn't it more important for a game just yo be fun?
I mean, Wukong is a shapeshifter, transforming into a girl wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility in the mythos.
