Luxating Patella - How we get our dog's knee back in place (miniature pinscher mix puppy)

  • Our miniature pinscher mix puppy has a grade 2 luxating patella in her right rear leg (grade 1 in her left rear leg, but her left leg has not presented any symptoms yet; UPDATE: it was a grade 4 when I'm uploading this, she actually just had surgery yesterday). This video demonstrates the easiest method we've found so far to put her floating knee cap back in place. We are NOT trained medical professionals & we do not recommend performing our methods unless you have first checked/consulted with your own veterinarian. If you believe your dog has a luxating patella, please schedule a visit with your vet ASAP. Your vet can then teach you methods to adjust your dog's knee.

    My dog had never experienced her knee just giving way before! Easter Sunday she just collapsed while walking. I panicked but immediately found your video, not even really knowing what just happened to her. Even tho I couldn't detect the two ridges you referred to I proceeded to do this application and voila! In a minute she got up and walked normally! I am SO THANKFUL to have found your video! Next time I'll be calm and prepared.

      We have a min pin and started noticing her holding up one of her back legs recently. I was already doing something similar by softly pulling her leg straight. I noticed she was not in pain when I did this and would immediately put her leg back down. Your video helped me to lookout for the ridges. Thank you.
      Cute dog btw.

      I'm so very happy the video was helpful, ty for the comment. My Vee was around that same age when she was diagnosed. She had surgery on her right knee just before she turned 1 year old. She'll be 3 next month & she hasn't had any issues with that knee since surgery. Her other knee does slip out of place from time to time, but our deciding factor for surgery is the same as it was with her right knee - when the knee is out more than in, then we'll pursue surgery.
      Best of luck to you & your pup. If you have any questions or want to talk, feel free to comment or message me on instagram at littlethings0x0

      You are SO very welcome! Ty for the comment, I am so happy my video helped you (I can relate, I was super nervous & scared when this all started with my Vee). Another tip, sometimes you can get it to pop back in on its own by having your dog sit then lay down (let your dog do the moving, just support & encourage, don't force movement - they know their limits 😊). The natural movements encourage it to pop back in. Best of luck & thanks again!

    Thank you!!! My cat has been diagnosed with this and the vet said it should eventually move back into place on its own, but I feel bad seeing him in such discomfort. Gonna gently try this, but not force anything so I don't make it worse. Thank you 🙏

      @Klutzyduncan  3 роки тому +9

      You're welcome! I hope it helps your cat, I totally understand where you're coming from - I was there too!
      Here's one other method I found that works - if you could get the animal to sit down on their own, sometimes they will shift it back into place by themselves.
      Best of luck & thanks for the comment!

      We have not apoquel and other meds and his vet is Dr King and she said she would snap it into place if she could but she can't and all I have been doing is just rubbing it and watching your video about it he walks better but when he runs he hop runs its not a normal run that dogs can do he staggles his legs and runs

    • @moonshine1st
      @moonshine1st 11 місяців тому

      @queen kiara Kifalme my little guys favorite thing to do is to go for a walk. Sometimes, he he gets so happy with a pep in his step and pulls so hard against the harness, that I have to cut his walk short because it definitely irritates his luxation on the left side. He does this little skip-hop move when walking quickly.
      The vet says if he shows increased pain that he'll have to have surgery. Right now, he gets 100 MG of Gabapentin for pain 2 to 3 times a day when he has a flare-up.
      Most of the time, 2 tabs a day is enough to help, but lately, he's been having to take 3. I'm afraid he's on his way to the $1,400.00 surgery, and it scares me to death.
      Please send up prayers for Radar, and I will do the same for your little one.
      Best of luck from our house to yours. ❤️

    Thank you! I have a mini toy poodle, and it happens at times. I was told surgery is not needed when they are small, only when they are bigger and heavier. However, if it affects his lifestyle, I was told to see a surgeon. I was also told he may develop arthritis if he doesn't get surgery. I was also told by others not to do surgery. Excellent video!

    Thank you so much for this video! My Yorkie has had a luxating patella for several years and it's never been an issue until about 4 days ago when I noticed a small limp and then yesterday she started to hobble which freaked me out. Of course, our vet was off yesterday & today so I've been stressed not knowing what to do. Thankfully I found your video today and was able to help pop her knee back in! She's still limping a little bc it's been out of the socket a few days and is no doubt sore, but at least she's putting pressure on it.

    Thank you. My Pom was diagnosed as a Puppy, but never had any problems until 1 month ago. She is now 13 years old, and I do not want to put her through surgery at her age, even though she is otherwise healthy. I put her on Cosemine a week ago, just ordered a brace for her front left leg, which is where she is in pain, and just ordered some pain medication being sold by a Vet. I never knew I could pop it back in so I am so grateful to you. God Bless you.

    It can take time for inflammation to go down before the knee cap will stay in place. Three days after injury I saw this video, popped the knee in place and it came back out. I tried it again the next day and it has stayed. I read comments under a vet's video that sometimes vets have to wait for inflammation to subside before the knee can be massaged back in place. Just be patient and assist your dog until it is fine. I also read you can ice the knee a few times a day and give aspirin to bring down inflammation (though I do not give my Pom anything unless her vet says). Also, our dog is still limping though the knee is in place and I read it can take 8-10 weeks to heal depending on injury. She is using the leg now though for sit position, sleep and to scratch her ear, When she eats and goes potty she bears weight on it. But we carry her up and down the stairs in and out still until she heals. She was diagnosed with luxating patella as a puppy and we have had only 1 incident before this one with the knee.

    • @Klutzyduncan
      @Klutzyduncan  3 роки тому

      TYFS your experience. My girl would need to sit still for a few seconds for it to settle back in & stay put. If she doesn't let it settle, it'll sometimes slip right back out. You're lucky your pup didn't require surgery. I agree, it's definitely a unique situation & varies from dog to dog.
      PS my girl in the video did go on to have surgery on her knee (I have other vids up on recovery). She's had no issues since w/that knee. Her other knee does slip out of place fairly often, but we won't do surgery until it either bothers her or it's out more than in.
      Sending wags & wiggles to your & your pup. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge & experience.

    I cant thank you enough for this video. My 2 yr old toy poodle has stage 2 in back leg and its so scary when it goes out and he cant get up and looks like hes had a stroke. Awwh, I have tears in my eyes! Tysvm for your very sweet comment. My heart is s-o happy that this helped you & Toby. TYSMFS. I'm so sorry your vet isn't more helpful. 😥
      Update: My girl went on to have surgery on this knee (after it was out more often than in) & it's been perfectly normal since. Her other knee now slips out of place from time to time, but we've taught her a command to put it back in place on her own (we say "fix it" & she sits a certain way to put it back in place). We won't opt for surgery until it's either out more than in OR effecting her quality of life negatively. Just wanted to share our experience since I made this video.
      Best of luck to you & Toby! Vee sends wags & wiggles to you both!

      No problem, I know how scary it can be. Not only did we experience patella luxation with our girl in the video, our last dog had 3 ACL surgeries - for some reason knee troubles seem to follow us, lol.
      Do you have your pup on any joint supplements? My dogs are on Cosequin, have been for years now. It's a truly excellent product for joint health. Perhaps a joint supplement might help your dog during their senior years.
      Another great option (for joint health & pain) is a prescription drug called Galliprant. Our senior dog's mood & mobility have vastly changed thanks to Galliprant.
      Also, unsolicited tip here lol, for our senior dog (he'll be 15 in November, ~90 lbs) once he hit his senior years we started getting bloodwork done every 6 months along with a check-up. Keeping this schedule has helped him so much, our vet has found things before they became issues & we truly believe he's living his absolute best possible life. If you're not already doing more frequent check-ups & bloodwork for your senior pup, I'd suggest you consider it. 🙂
      Sorry for the unsolicited advice, it's just I wish someone had told me these things when my previous dogs hit their senior years.
      Hope you & yours feel better soon!

    Thank you for this. My 14-year old chihuahua was diagnosed a decade ago, but it had always popped back in on its own. As he has gotten older it seems to cause him more pain. I too am apprehensive about surgery, especially considering his age, but he's my little love and I cannot abide by him experiencing pain. I tried this this morning and it worked immediately. Our miniature Jack Russell terrier is nearly 18 months old and I noticed him a few months ago doing a strange skip/hop on his back leg when he is “trotting” around (never does it when he is doing 100mph zoomies!). On our check up in Sept we mentioned it to the vet who didn’t seem bothered and said it’s not a problem but if it gets worse let them know. This advice was the exact opposite of what I have researched online which says it’s better to get it sorted sooner rather than later as it only needs the knee bone scraping a bit to make the groove bigger, so the kneecap doesn’t keep sliding out. I’m so confused as I don’t want Bruno to be in pain. He actually looks like your little dog but Bruno has dark chocolate patches on him as well. A very rare colour we were told for a JRT as he is classed as chocolate and tan with the blue gene! He is also a very small dog with a very BIG attitude!
    Any other advice regarding the knee problem would be gratefully received as I’m not convinced my vet knows what she is doing as always seems very nervous and they never seem to like being questioned or have things pointed out to them (she has changed since we joined the practice and no idea where our original vet went!)

      @@GoLeafs03 I'd say the most stressful part for my girl was just before surgery & right after; just being away from me & in a strange place, crated, with lots of dogs she doesn't know (also, we WFH so she doesn't know life where her people leave her for 10 hours a day). Post surgery was very smooth, she didn't seem in any distress at all. This is consistent with the other 3 ACL surgeries my last dog had done, all 3 of those surgeries & recovery went smoothly. I expected surgery & recovery to be long & grueling on all 4 dog knee surgeries my dogs have had, but it was quite the opposite. Both my dogs knew their limits after surgery & recovery was a breeze for us. (Side note: Kongs stuffed with wet dog food then frozen were spectacular during recovery!)
      As for cost, it definitely varies. There are also different ways to repair it, so that matters too. I've heard costs of anywhere from $1k to over $4k; it really varies on the surgery & I think, your location. Ours cost just over $1k (for the luxation repair), but we do have an amazing relationship with our vet so I believe we got a small discount.

The way I fix her luxating kneecaps when they pop out of place is to stand behind her and pick her up with my right hand on her chest and my left hand on her bum. I decided to take my dog to an orthopedic specialist ($175 for the eval) for a 2nd opinion and was glad I did because after the specialist evaluated her, she diagnosed her left leg to be borderline grade 2 and her right leg barely grade 1 and thus, she strongly opposed doing surgery.
      The specialist also pointed out that luxating patella is very common in dogs and that it is NOT advisable to have a surgery unless the dog can no longer walk. She also recommended to give my dog a joint supplement to help support her joints and to help prolonged the progression of the condition. Furthermore, she also pointed out that while luxating patella can worsen overtime, she opined that there is only about 60% that her condition will worsen overtime. She has been an orthopedic specialist in dogs for over 30yrs and said that she's seen more cases where they do not worsen - provided the animal is on a quality joint supplement and avoids activity that put stress on the joints (i. e. jumping and climbing stairs excessively)...
      Since her evaluation with the specialist, I was referred (by a friend) to a nutritionist who was also glad that I didn't move forward with surgery. He recommended a Pharmaceutical-Grade Joint and Cartilage Supplement. My dog has been on it for almost a year, and thankfully, I have not seen her limp since!!!!
      For anyone being told their dog needs orthopedic surgery, I highly recommend seeking a 2nd or 3rd opinion from a specialist to make sure. The cost of surgery is not cheap and thus making it enticing for many vets to recommend even though it is not necessary. The recovery following an orthopedic surgery in dogs are very extensive and sadly only a small number of them recover fully without any permanent impairment.

    We are looking to adopt a dog with Grade 3. Vet says to wait and see, but surgery maybe in future. Knee has not popped yet. How much is the surgery per knee and how was the recuperate and rehab. How long rehab before the doggie was allowed to go full steam.

      I'm not a vet, but to my understanding it's not possible to have a grade 3 luxation & it not have popped yet (grade 3 presents itself as out of place often, but can be manipulated back in place). I personally would re-confirm that diagnosis. I also wouldn't opt for surgery unless the knee was out more than in OR it was hurting the dog or negatively impacting their quality of life. My girl's other knee pops out from time to time & we have not opted for surgery yet (& we won't until it's a grade 4 or negatively impacting her quality of life).
      Surgery cost varies widely, a lot based on your area. I've heard it ranges from $1,300 to $2,600 (I'm in the lower end of that range), much more if you're going to a specialist vet.
      As far as rehab/recooperation, $0 for us. There was none of that, the only cost was for the surgery itself & any related follow ups. Our girl recovered quickly & was toe touching the leg on day 2, back to 95% within a week or 2. 100% shortly thereafter. My girl was

    Hi, my dog has the same problem. He’s a 13 year old chihuahua. He has been limping on his right back leg for 3 days now. He goes back and forth with running on it, walking and being normal then he starts limping again out of nowhere. I’m thinking it can be a sprain or out of place? My bf & I stretched his leg out like how you demonstrated and he’s up and walking normal again. When he lifts his right leg to pee, his leg gets stuck in the same position that causes him to start limping. Do you suggest going to a dog chiropractor or the vet? Thanks for listening & any feedback.

    • @Klutzyduncan
      @Klutzyduncan  3 роки тому +1

      I'm happy to hear this method provided some relief for him. Another method to get a dog's knee back in place is to get your dog to sit & it'll usually slip back in naturally (you should see them sit kind of slanted at first then shift into a proper sit which is when it'll slip back in). I have to give my girl a soft place to sit & she will, it'll then pop right back in (this is her other knee, not the one in the video; she had surgery on that one after this video. Her knee hasn't slipped once since surgery, thank goodness!).
      I'm not a vet, but from my experience with going thru 4 knee surgeries with my dogs (ACLs & luxating patella) I'd recommend you go to a vet. If I had to guess, it sounds like it might be a pulled muscle or sprain (due to old age). If it were his knee, I'd think you'd see the disconnection more, like it just doesn't look right until it's back in place (or the dog will hike it up close to their body while it's out of place, not limp - but perhaps that's what you mean by limp, I'm not sure). These are just my best guesses, again I'm not a vet & I've never seen your dog. A vet IMO is your best option. They can tell you further options, including a doggie chiropractor if needed.
      Best of luck, we send wags & wiggles your way! Thanks for the comment!

    How often does your dog's knee pop out of place? My dog's knee popped out place running up the steps. Do you think her knee will keep popping out of place now often? Or maybe it's just this one time due to running up the steps? I'm just asking bc my vet right away said surgery if it keeps not staing in place. It's very pricey for that surgery.

    • @Klutzyduncan
      @Klutzyduncan  3 роки тому +1

      We decided it was time for surgery on Vee's knee once the knee was "out more than in" (meaning it was out of place more often than it was in place; it got to a point where putting it back in place was more difficult & it would only stay in for a few seconds after).
      She hasn't had any issues with her knee since surgery, but her other knee slips out of place every so often. We won't do surgery until that one gets to the point that it's out more than in also.
      I can't really tell you if or how quickly that would happen for your pup, really just depends on your pup.

      Understood. We did try a brace before surgery, but with her small size it was very hard to find one that fit correctly & provided more pros than cons. When she'd wear the brace, if the knee popped out it became *very* difficult to manipulate the knee OR get the brace off. I would be open to trying a brace again (if she ever shows need for it with her other leg), dependent on fit & structure/materials.

      @@Klutzyduncan : just wondering...did you ever try to bandage it up? If so, did that not work well enough to keep it from popping out? Did it cause other issues, such as less motion range or less circulation?
      I ask because we adopted a mini poodle about a month ago and on the second day when he went out to pee I noticed he came back with his leg like that. At first I thought it was the wet grass and he didn't like it or he got something stuck in his paw...but after thoroughly searching could find nothing. I instinctively tried to slowly extend his leg and was massaging his muscles until he could straighten it out and put weight back on it. I thought it was then just a muscle spasm and would see it occur a day here or there...but now I have noticed it many times daily. I have always been able to snap it back into place, but want to bandage it up to help support the knee but am afraid to injure him more.
      I don't have a way to pay for a vet visit at the moment, since we had to be bumped down to part-time on our job and money is super tight...so trying to research what I can do, besides having him get surgery, that may help him. I appreciate any insight you can give me.

      @@sandradeleon6171 hey there. We did try ace bandages & also a neoprene brace - neither worked AT ALL. Both did more harm than good because with the neoprene brace, you had to slip her leg in it (like a tube) then tighten straps, so when her knee popped out & the brace was on, it was AWKWARD trying to get the brace off (because there was NO WAY to help her get it back in place with brace on). Same deal with the ace bandage. I didn't wrap the ace bandage tight-tight because I didn't want to effect her circulation - therefore it did NOTHING but just bug her when she walked. I truly don't think one could wrap it as tight as it needs to be to keep it in place - it'd definitely cut off circulation. I wouldn't try either of those methods again.
      My girls other knee does come out frequently & we've got a new method that works really well - she sits & it pops back in. When we see her knee pop out, we stop & tell her "put your knee back in, sit" & she does. I think I need to try & grab video of her doing it to explain.

      Frozen Kongs were awesome during all dog knee surgery recoveries I've been through (4 total w/2 different dogs-1 large & 1 small). We would use wet dog food, sometimes a little bit of peanut butter, little bit of Kong stuffing, etc to stuff the kongs; keeps them busy & still. The first few days, we'd use the frozen kong to feed at least 1 meal, if not both. Also stocked up on safe/healthy, long lasting chews (we love castor & pollux rawhide, our go-to rawhide for at least 8 years now).
      One thing I can say with my 2 dogs I've gone through 4 knee surgeries with - is that they somehow KNOW their limitations after surgery (my larger dog was high energy, but she knew her limits after surgery). Try not to worry much about the recovery, your dog will do what he/she is comfortable with; just be there to support & guide them. First day or 2 after surgery is where they'll need the most care & attention.
      I hope surgery goes well for your pup! I'm sure she'll be back to normal soon. Try not to worry. 🤗 Hugs!
      PS/FYI Vee was about 8-10 lbs when she had her luxating patella surgery & she's 17 lbs today, no issues with the knee since surgery. She was a grade 4 at the time of surgery, we waited until it was out more than in & also couldn't put the knee back in herself. Today, her other knee is probably a grade 2 or 3, but she's still able to put it back in herself (we've taught her to sit & it slips back in itself). I won't opt for surgery until she becomes unable to put it back in herself or it spends most of its time out more than in. If your dog is used to the knee being out & they've almost adapted to life on 3 legs, they'll be less likely to use the knee after surgery; I think that recovery might be a little more difficult.
