    Thank you! Both of my questions that I submitted were answered - I greatly appreciate this! My dog had surgery for luxating patella and a torn cruciate ligament on one back leg six months ago, and his other back leg has not been operated on yet and is at a grade 3 luxating patella. He is not even 2 years old yet. He still does not use the operated leg properly, and mostly carries it around. He is on pain management now daily. I'm very reluctant to operate on the other back leg as a result. Good luck to your sweet babies! Orthopaedic issues in dogs are stressful for sure.

    Thank you for the very informative video! Questions (sorry I didn’t see this video 2 years ago) 1. Mai can feel the patella when out of place. Is it helpful/therapeutic for a dog owner to move it back into place (once trained) or should that be left to a vet? 2. Is there any type of soft knee brace that would help keep it in place? 3. Would Vitamin K2 mk7 (not vitamin K1) be helpful for this condition since it is involved in calcium deposition and remodeling of bones? If so, what dose?

    My baby is grade 4 on both knees. It’s gotten so much worse the last couple years and I’m going to schedule the surgery, once again. I’d had it scheduled two years ago when my brother tragically died and I couldn’t deal with one more thing at the time. Sadie cakes just turned 6 on 4/24 and it’s been so much worse the past couple months. I’m going next week to schedule a date to actually do it this time. Prayers are welcome !

    What supplements do you use for luxating patella?

  • @Duchess710
    @Duchess710 5 років тому +1

    Concerning pet insurance. Our pet insurance only reimburses after you’ve paid for the service. When our dog was being treated for her mitral valve disease we had to pay several thousand dollars out of pocket. It took several months before we were reimbursed. Many people don’t have that much money put away for an ailment which may be unexpectedly diagnosed. They would have to make a decision on how they would pay for it. My advice is to have some savings set aside, if possible for pet injuries or health problems that may suddenly arise. The vet hospital where we took our dog when she needed emergency surgery expected the payment upfront. It was on a weekend which made it difficult to access that much money from our account. We had to resort to using our credit cards to pay for it. I wouldn’t go without pet insurance, but be aware that you may need to have the funds available in an emergency.

      Duchess710 we are aware of this! And always use credit cards

    Thank you both for this! My dog (she's about a 10 year old chiweenie) started limping a few weeks ago & we thought it was just a sprained ankle. But we took her to our vet & he said it was a "luxating patella", which I'd never heard of. He recommended some specialist vets out of state which we cannot afford. So I'm looking at ways to treat this without surgery. Thanks to your video, at least now I know what I'm dealing with.

      @@AA-ho5mg My poodle is 3 years old and she too has luxating patella which is common in small breeds. My vet recommended not allowing her to jump and climb on anything. Also due to her age she can not take supplements yet, but I do give her fish oils (salmon) in her kibble daily and she seems to tolerate that well. I also allow her to rest more than usual and limit the amount of time we take walks. I was told that braces or leg bands for support do not help. Keeping the dogs weight down and having them eat a healthy diet is also key to maintaining healthy joints. There are 3 degrees of damage of the luxating patella and depending on which type your dog has, they may be a candidate for surgery. A vet can do it for 1200-1500 or you can get it done by this type of surgeon for twice that amount. Like they stated getting pet insurance may help with the cost, but I do not know. I hope this helps.

    To avoid hernia (specially for small bod) avoid jump up/down sofa but I know it's not easy. Trust me luxating it's "nothing" compared with hernia. Interesting video. Bring them back to talk about common problem with the cavalier like heart (souffle au coeur don't know the name in English), hernia and much more.

    Hi! I know you probably wont see this but im getting a calvier king Charles spaniel puppy who is only going to be around 10 weeks of age. Me and my mom didn't know if a pen or cage would be the best. Say in the pen we put food,water,toys and a bed because of the bigger size. Because of the size we wouldn't be able to fit all that in a cage/crate. It would be good to hear your opinion. Thanks

    I have 2 cavies. One of my girls had her knee fixed, due to luxating patella. She's doing wonderful now. She used to limp and drag her poor leg. I think her vet inserted some strains (it's that how you call it? lol), so her knee can stay in place. She has 3 years since the surgery and no issue so far. Wish Milton best of health! She actually resemble my little one, tiny body and head and a lot of brown around the head.

    • @ioanadaria1398
      @ioanadaria1398 5 років тому

      Oh. And btw, crazy prices for surgery. I paid around $150 for my girl, with 1 night hospitalization and anesthesia. We just had to pay extra for our follow up visits and antibiotic/inflammatory shots.
      But I live in a small country in Europe, so different expectations. Sometimes I think for some procedures would be cheaper to travel abroad, only if you can find a vet good enough to trust.

    • @herkythecavalier
      @herkythecavalier  5 років тому

      Ioana Daria $150 for knee surgery is not a lot at all! Do you mean $1500? The surgery here would cost around $3000

    • @ioanadaria1398
      @ioanadaria1398 5 років тому

      Yes, I really mean $150. It would be 600 RON in Romania. Some clinics might be a little bit pricier, but I'm sure nothing over double that price ($300). We knew our vet. He has a small neighborhood office, but he's a great professional and always keeping his expectation realist. For example, before the surgery, he said to wait for a while, we did her knee injection and prescribed supplements. But the limping continued pretty bad, so I decided on the surgery. He told me surgery has 50/50 chances of success, because you need to place the knee back firm enough not to slip again, but lose enough not the disturb her walking. Some dogs need a redo, some life with a perfect fixed knee the rest of their life. Then a few months after, her other knee started acting fussy, we did again knee fillers and it worked. But she lost 2 kg also, so less weight helped also.
      It's funny, cause our country even has cheap dental services for humans and some clinics market themselves as medical tourism, catering only to tourist and foreigners.
      Another example of price would be the echocardiogram, around $75-80.

    Hi I need all the help I can get! I have a 19 pound mini aussidoodle who is 1.5 years old. She is getting a double luxated patella surgery her left knee is grade 3 and her right knee is grade 2!

She has “crazy hour” 4 times a day where she is unstoppable and does all kinds of crazy moves. She loves getting up on her two pack legs to get higher.

    lovely girl, wish she was my vet, I have met some zero personality vets, where you wonder if they even like animals and helping them at all. Also Mai please help, I have a 6 month old cavalier female, she doesn't eat as much as she should as a pup that needs nutrients to grow. I have gone vets, they said she is just fussy, spoilt, and manipulating me. And when she is starving she'll eat, but she will in between starving not eat for a day and a half, then she is hungry and eats a bit just enough to live, she is skinny. Any advice will be appreciated. She is a happy and healthy pup otherwise.

      She eats some dry food and also some pre made raw food like you feed your girls. I have tried dry food only for a while thinking she is to young for raw food. But it made no difference. I also tried different dry food. Same, she eats it all excited as it's new then she goes back to eating less. All she wants to eat is roasted chicken or chicken treats and that has hardly any nutrients. She has eaten better these past two days, still not beasting it down like Herky though haha my pup is very dainty. I think she is just not into food atm. Her stools are fine and no vomiting.
