Phanteom Can’t speak about morals and ethics but stability was there, 99 years of it from 1815 to 1914 with no major conflicts in the intervening period. What ended it wasn’t instability, rather the rise of nationalism all over Europe amongst people who were no longer happy to be ruled by foreigners. Ask any Irishman, who can tell you a lot about being ruled by foreigners. Since 1945 we have now had 75 years of relative stability, but there are rumblings in the horizon in the direction of China and the USA. Will we make it to 99 years?
@@peterherberth7658 When I wrote that comment all those years ago I was barely a teenager. But what I wrote was an expression of the general decrease in order and stability that I felt at the time. About the only thing that I would change is the grammar! I'm a little more open minded now (to me, not every society would work well with a strong centralized executive), but in many cases a strong figure, even if the government itself is not strong (centralized) itself, appears to historically return better lives for its people, such as with Frederick the Great in Prussia's time (and, really... could you see Biden, Trump, Johnson, etc. leading from the front in anything more than a scripted political party convention?) The modern period's been iffy to me, seemingly stable, though much of it seems to be dependant on technology. Now the hysteria a given population is prone to is getting pretty bad. Populism rules in most places regardless of who's rosette is in, and those that control and channel the populism seem to have more strength than many kings. Another point is the nuclear bomb potentially artificially maintaining order (many conflicts are kept on ice as a result) since 1945. I'm not sure what to think, but I suspect that if we make it to 99 years the result would be worse (if there's such a thing) than 80 years given how fast offensive weapons technology is apparently accelerating.
Tornado15555 My previous contribution was directed at Phanteom and his assertion that there was no stability in the past. The word stability is hostage to subjective interpretation and discussion on the world order is too complicated to lead to general agreement. The past 75 years have been “relatively” stable in part because of the superior technology to which you refer. Even North Korea shrinks from instigating nuclear Armageddon out of fear of reprisal. The world has changed beyond recognition since the end of those 99 years of stability in 1914, and yet despite those changes and advances in technology and military know-how, we are still subject, now as then, to the same underlying precondition for world stability, which is this: no one nation or collective group of nations must be permitted to gain an insuperable advantage over the other side. If that happens, the game is over. In one sense, the minor wars and skirmishes we see on the world stage are a necessary adjustment to prevent a larger, more destructive conflagration, in the same way that a series of minor and survivable earthquakes helps to delay the onset of a powerful non-survivable earthquake. We hear much criticism of non-democratic governments around the work, which actually outnumber the democracies. If they were all replaced by democracies, there would be no guarantee whatever that this would further the cause of world peace and international stability, for your adversary remains your adversary, no matter how he dresses himself. Populist movements to which you also refer, being driven by the erratic prejudices of inherently unstable populations, are more likely than not to add to instability, for they mutate and evolve, and by being harder to pin down, make it harder to promote long-lasting agreements which would be to everybody’s advantage. The likely consequences of Brexit to the UK economy over the next years will be testimony to that. The pursuit of stability requires, above all, calm heads in a storm, wisdom shorn of self-interest, and time measured in decades to pursue sensible long-term policies to produce economic benefits for all. Sadly, these ingredients are all in short supply, but given half a chance, scope exists for the outlook to improve.

The music is the same though, composed by Joseph Haydn. The only difference is that nowadays the anthem is sung to the "Lied der Deutschen", which is the national anthem of Germany. On a similar note, the music to "God save the King/Queen" in the UK was also part of the German imperial anthem "Heil dir im Siegerkranz".
Good heavens, doesn't anyone reocognize Haydn anymore? This was composed by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) in 1797 as "Gott erhalte Fran den Kaiser" '. It was adopted as the hymn of the Holy Roman Empire; the Austrio-Hugarian Empire; the Germans; Nazi Germany as "Deutschland Deutschland uber allies" and is also a standard Episcopal hymn in the 1982 Episcopal Hymnal p. 555: "Glorious things of the are spoken, Zion, City of our God . . . "
The tilte of this song is 'Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze', not ...Franz den Kaiser. :) And it is not a german song, that is the anthem of Austro-Hungary. :)
"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" are the Original words from 1797, when the Holy Roman Empire of the German People still existed, and Franz was the Emperor'Kaiser. He later founded his Habsburg lands into the Austrian Empire and dissolved the Holy Roman Empire fearing Napoleon would take it.

It is such a pretty hymn. I think it would be nice to have a monarchy. A constitutional monarchy, of course, with real political power in the hands of elected officials. But monarchs are unifying figures and symbols of national pride. And the monarchy keeps the head of government from behaving like a monarch.
All monarchies in Europe are constitutional. I happen to be living in one, the disadvantage is that our taxdollars go to the king and queen’s private boat: 400.000€ a year, and of course other stuff like royal festivals.

"Ever heard of something called etiquette?" sounds pretty snippy to me. I was merely making an observation. No need to get all high-and-mighty. Are you certain this WAS a "state" funeral given the position of the monarchy in Austria? I've seen pictures of Otto & Regina tenderly holding hands in public. In the middle of the anthem - wider jeden - he stops rather abruptly. I can't tell if he's looking at bishops or his mom's coffin. Either way, he certainly does look sad. I've know that feeling.

Let me suggest, first of all, that there is no need to take that rather snippy tone. I understand there is appropriate conduct regarding a royal. But Dr. Von Habsburg was pretender to a throne not in existence at the time, no matter how you or I may feel about that. Many of these religious personalities knew HIRH personally. A simple acknowledgement of his grief might have been nice as happens so often at funerals. They needn't have touched him. He looks SO sad. I could not have resisted.

Franz is Franz II was the last emporer of the german empire. After he resigned in 1806 from the german emporer he became Franz I of Austria.

It is such a pretty hymn. I think it would be nice to have a monarchy. A constitutional monarchy, of course, with real political power in the hands of elected officials. But monarchs are unifying figures and symbols of national pride. And the monarchy keeps the head of government from behaving like a monarch.
Me too, I think it the britisch system with the monarchy is very good.
I totally agree! Lang lebe das Hause Habsburg!
Ich stimme vollstens zu!🖤💛
All monarchies in Europe are constitutional. I happen to be living in one, the disadvantage is that our taxdollars go to the king and queen’s private boat: 400.000€ a year, and of course other stuff like royal festivals.

@IKhantSpel Its the old Austrian "Kaiserhymne".
@IKhantSpel they are singing the old Kaiserhymne, old anthem of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation and after that it become the national anthem of the Austria-hungary empire, after the fall of the empire (1918) Germany took this anthem (1922) as their new national anthem but it belong in the first place to Austria and the HRE

This was Zita's funeral, Michael....Ein bisschen Geschichte vielleicht???
"Ever heard of something called etiquette?" sounds pretty snippy to me. I was merely making an observation. No need to get all high-and-mighty. Are you certain this WAS a "state" funeral given the position of the monarchy in Austria? I've seen pictures of Otto & Regina tenderly holding hands in public. In the middle of the anthem - wider jeden - he stops rather abruptly. I can't tell if he's looking at bishops or his mom's coffin. Either way, he certainly does look sad. I've know that feeling.

Crazy to think that she was a widow for two-thirds of a century.

Was there a choir for this or was this just the attendees singing? Because if it's just the attendees then that's the best singing I've heard from an audience not specifically made up of trained singers

That was unworthy of you. Many more appropriate answers are available to what he suggested simplistically.
Christian this is not true at all, because since there is a mass of democracies in Europe and all the big countries are democracies or only constitutional monarchies we don't had any big wars.
laure innviertel no instead of one big war every 50 - 100 years, we're in a continuous state of medium wars that end up with more deaths in the long run and little to no benefit to the country fighting the war, so give me the king back
Let me suggest, first of all, that there is no need to take that rather snippy tone.
Die Kaiserhymne ist unserer Hymne ziemlich ähnlich.
