This clock striking actually comes from Spasskaya tower.
I am very happy to have found this Video, as far as I can see the first one with a clear sound of the monumental Uspenskij Bell.

And they don't even seem to be wearing earplugs, seeing as they're talking to one another. Wow, those Russians must be indestructible! :-)

Darkheart just study the map of avarage IQ per country. Russia scores pretty low. Hence this utterly premitive way of ringing a bell. And I was not talking about earplugs.

What is the weights of the 10 largest bells in the tower?
no idea but the weigh of the largest one (Uspenskiy bell) is 70 tons.
And after it is struck how long does it take for the sound to dampen away, or i suppose in other words for the ring to decay to nothing. A fair time I would say.

There needs to be a better way to ring that giant bell.
It's not so hard to move that clapper. It's a giant pendulum, no more :) But ringers have to wait for exact time of ringing - by rules of the church service. So they have to move it without sound, waiting and then increasing the amplitude of waving immediately when they wish to. They don't have to ring continiously because there's not a task.
The only “better” way would be with a mechanism similar to the ones used on the somewhat smaller bells with a foot pedal attached to the clapper by a wire.
Swing it like we do in the rest of Europe. You will need a 55 kw motor to ring it.
I don't think so. Russian bell ringing culture has a great variety. After the decay of Stalinism, it came to a new apex. Russian people have Russian souls. And the bells are their instruments, however they are rung.
But the statics of the tower? Let Russia ring the bells in traditional manner.

how many bells does it have
There are 22 bells all together.
3 giant bells on the Dormition Belfry. 6 hard bells on the first level of Ivan Velikiy (5 of them in use). 14 middle and small bells on the second level - but only 7 in use. And 3 middle bells on the third level. So there's 36 bells in common but 18 in use.
