These are some of the most beautiful bells I have ever heard. The tuning is just so magnificent that it’s literally the best noise anybody would want to hear. NYC Riverside has some of the best bells ever.
sadly, the bell chamber had to be closed to visitors after the renovation of the carillon. the recast bells were rearranged in a fashion that made it less safe to walk around. the upside: they sound stronger and more balanced in tone than ever. the trebles used to get lost in the city's street noise...no longer.
i don´t think the 8 tons bell is the second biggest. Behind the Bourdon it is a bell that looks almost as big as the Bourdon. And above they passed another really big bell
These are the bells heard in the 1958 Mercury Living Presence recording of the 1812 overture with Antal Dorati and the (then) Minneapolis Symphony. Then they headed about 45 miles up the Hudson River to record the black powder cannon shots at West Point. The recording is elsewhere here on UA-cam. Wonderfull 5 bells with magnetic clappers. That's why the 19 ton bell was ringing out even when he was already done with swinging. Same clapper is by Great Paul ( 16 Tons)

@@MikeRo19 It was ringing because the clappers counterbalance on clapper keeps moving for a while even if the Bell has stopped. The counterbalance is also there too increase the impact so when clappers hits the Bell The Bell is louder and Audible outside.

@@videolover2014 its all in the overtones. that can give the impression of a different tuning than one expects. of course, these bells' overtones were tuned along with the strike tones.
I went in to check out the bell chamber during an open tower event at Christ Church Cranbrook in Michigan. It's not a huge carillon but IT IS _LOUD._ I had no ear protection with me and had to back out of there immediately.
True story...The bourdon bell was installed in a ceremony in 1930. A newsreel crew had placed mics and cables in the bell tower, to record the first ringing of the bell. Little did they know that officials from the electricians' union had been alerted. They held up the ceremony until all sound equipment was removed from the tower.
If the bigger bells are too heavy for us to ring them then let the mechanical machines do that for us because I know how they feel they feel like they weigh more than a ton. ⚙🔔⚙

And how would you ring the heaviest? You'd need about 6 men for that! With Riverside's layout, i.e. with there being no ringing room, there isn't really anywhere those six strappin' lads can stand to ring it! It's not just as simple as attaching a rope or two.
@@adamm2693 I have been in the chamber at Riverside when the bourdon struck the hour. No swing, no clapper, just the hammer. It was an amazingly _gentle_ sound. Not loud, but _full._ Like standing on the shoulder of God and hearing Him speak.
It was the largest tuned bell for over 80 years. The achievement was such a proud one that its adornments include a plaque with the note C. After tuning it was weighed and the number inscribed in the plaque: 40,926 lbs. (see 8:50 for a view of it.)

And how would you ring the heaviest? You'd need about 6 men for that! With Riverside's layout, i.e. with there being no ringing room, there isn't really anywhere those six strappin' lads can stand to ring it! It's not just as simple as attaching a rope or two.

@@adamm2693 I have been in the chamber at Riverside when the bourdon struck the hour. No swing, no clapper, just the hammer. It was an amazingly _gentle_ sound. Not loud, but _full._ Like standing on the shoulder of God and hearing Him speak.
