- Derek’s overseas travel day vlog is finally HERE!
This past July, my amaaaaaazing husband Derek flew from Chicago to Paris to meet up with me, and had a VERY long 10-hour layover in London in between!
The whole journey ended up being 24 hours of non-stop travel. With lot’s of ups and downs!
In today's vlog, you'll follow along with him, plus you'll also enjoy a zillion of Derek’s helpful travel tips along the way!
In my opinion, he did a great job at showing us all how best to spend a layover day in London if you are passing through. A Google Maps link of his sightseeing walking tour is linked below for quick reference.
With that, this was Derek’s first solo video filming experience, so be sure to give him a nice boost by pressing the like button! I thought he did GREAT!!!!
Hope you all enjoy! Cheers, and happy travels!

DEEEEERRRREEEEKKKK!!!! Yeah!!! We have missed you Derek. Good to see you back on the channel.
He’s an absolute star!!! 😀😀🌟🌟🌟🌟
Maaaarrrrrkkkkkk! What’s up brother?
@@mr.meanstotravel not much stud!
Derek did a great job both filming and surviving this travel day! His experience was like that movie "Trains, planes and automobiles'!
It was a lot! What wasn’t shown was when it made the transfer from the bud to the train in Paris my ticket didn’t work… ended up with a police office letting me through 😂
Hahaha yes exactly! He did a great job, and WHAT a day he had!
Nice work, Derek!
He crushed it! 😀🙌
Thank you! Eliz did all the real work with editing the mess I gave her! Hope you enjoyed the blooper reel at the end!
@@MeansToTravel so did you. Everest that is 😘
I think for both of you guys. Try and find a quiet place if it's possible to just close your eyes and meditate and take deep breaths. It helps to clear your mind and focus on things you need to do on your trip. You literally have to block out the rushing and crowded world around you. Great tips Derek. Harriet and I have been there. Lots of love from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Totally agree for long or stressful travel days! Closing your eyes and tuning out the hubbub can help a lot. 🙏 Thanks so much for watching and hope you all have a great Labor Day Weekend!
Thanks for watching guys!
In the past if I've had a late flight out of Heathrow, I have used the town of Windsor as place to spend time before my flight. There's a local bus from Heathrow to Windsor and the town of Windsor (even if you don't want to go into the castle) is nice to explore. Also walk across the river to Eton, which is even smaller and has some nice places to eat. If it's school term time you'll also have the Eton students wandering around as the school buildings are all in different parts of the town, the boys uniforms are very formal suits with tails (as in a dinner suit) with white ties.
Very nice! Thanks for the recommendations! Never done Eton or Windsor before, so I guess I’ll need to go back!
I went to Windsor and walked around Eton in 2009 when I studied abroad, and it was such a fun day trip! Great reco!
Great job Derek! And perfect timing, I’m watching all of your London content and taking notes for my trip.
Perfect, so glad to hear! I added a Google Maps link in the description to Derek's exact London walk, in case that's helpful! 😀
Hopefully a few of the tips were helpful! Make sure to check out our other vlogs from the UK! 🇬🇧
Wow!! What a "day"!!! 😳
Such a long journey, but we were so glad to be reunited in the end! 😀🙏
This is a great video. Thank you! I was looking for this information. I will be traveling through London next year in March. I was wondering if it is possible to visit London within that amount of time.
So glad this video helped! Just always be mindful of the clock and give yourself some time buffers in case of transportation issues. Thanks for watching and we hope you have a fabulous trip! 😀
New Jack City and better volume.Excellent vlog,Derek good job.
So glad he got the jack in time so we could hear him well during the trip!!!
Thanks a lot bud!
hi there! so informative, excited for my long layover in February.. I am coming from the US as well, just curious did you need an in transit visa to leave the airport… I see something’s that say yes and others that say no.
If you hold a US passport, you should be fine to leave the airport without a visa in February. Just make sure you have your boarding pass for your next flight when you arrive back to the airport to check in. Also be sure to give yourself plenty of time to go through security again. Have fun!
Hey 😊 we have a lay over 5 pm till next morning flight back to the us at 9 am. If we go to London for a few hours how late can we stay? Do trains go all night?
Some of the tube lines shut down for several hours overnight, so definitely look into where you want to be and if the tube stations nearby are open 24 hours. Just keep in mind that getting through customs when you land can take some time, so if you were planning to eat dinner in London, you would need to buffer a lot of time to get into the city. Hope it works out!!
Derek, I noticed you ditched your Scottish mask when you got to England. Probably a wise move!
Nothing political, just Eliz wanting me to use the KN95 masks!
Haha! He loves to wear his Scottish mask anywhere he can 😆
The real London bridge was actually bought by an American businessman and transported to the US, not sure which state.
Yes you're right, I believe it was sent to Arizona!
How about considering the train to Paris rather than a 10 hour layover in London? Layover when you come back on the way to the US.
Good point to bring up! Derek booked a round-trip from Paris with miles, so I don’t think that adding the train would have been an option at the same point value. And if he had chosen to do that when he got to London anyway, I think the oneworld alliance would have cancelled his return flight for not showing up for one of the legs.
It could work, though, if your budget is high and you can afford to buy both a plane and a train ticket! That’s said, if that’s the case, in 2022 I’d recommend spending the night or longer in London to avoid any risk with plane delays getting too close to causing issues with your train schedule…since airline delays were soooooo common this summer!
@@MeansToTravel I didn't realize he had used points. In the planning phase, I might have opted for a round-trip from London and used the train or a low cost flight on to Paris. Your way worked for him. I just hate to have long layovers when I am jet-lagged. Give me a walk, a dinner and a hotel as soon as possible, rather than a "forced march", another flight, and finding out the trains aren't running from CDG. Frustrating times for certain.
Yeah, May do differently in the future if I had more time, but this was economical for both my time and pocket book! 🥳
What does B ROLL mean mate- im thinking bread rolls or summit?
Oh man, I now wish it meant bread roll, too! Hah! But alas, it's just a video term meaning alternative video that's layered over the main video and isn't narrated.
@@MeansToTravel Ok that makes sense but why B Roll? ALSO when you said you were going to walk from West Minster to Tower of London in a day I thought not a chance- far to much distraction to make that 5 mile walk in one day!! Great video- London welcomes you and hopes it has a place in your heart
Such a long day! I was DYING by the end of this one y’all! Only slept ~ 3 hours on that first flight. Loved exploring London with y’all though! 🥳
So much fun tagging along with you, thanks for filming babe!
