- If you cook, you need to know how to season a cast-iron skillet. (And if you don't have one, you need to get a cast-iron skillet.) In this video, Home & Drinks Editor Will Price walks us through the process and drops more expert knowledge throughout.
What You'll Need:
-Cast-iron skillet (enameled cast iron does not require seasoning)
-Oven
-Neutral cooking oil (canola or similar)
-Oil rag
How-To Steps:
-Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
-Clean the pan thoroughly.
-Dry off the pan and place it in the oven for 10 minutes.
-Apply about half a tablespoon of neutral cooking oil to the cooking surface.
-Place the skillet in the oven, cooking side facing down.
-After 15 minutes, wipe down the skillet to evenly spread any collected oil.
-Put the skillet back in the oven for at least an hour.

You not only tell the steps but also the reasons behind the steps! Very helpful.
Funny coincidence. My wife and I bought a house in Charleston and moved here 2 years ago, where apparently you are. Found your video at the top of my recommends.
Small world.
Welcome to Charleston ! 😁 Minus the traffic it's pretty amazing here !
That oven is badass.
Thank you Will, Great job with the video. I truly appreciate all the useful information you've provided. I'm new to cast iron skillet cooking and want to do it right the first time.👨🍳👍
I received a new Lodge comal for Christmas and am refreshing my knowledge on seasoning. One year ago I had to take the cooking surface of our smaller and much older Lodge comal down to bare metal with power tools, and managed a very good seasoning that is now due for a refresh. This video gives me extra confidence in how I plan to proceed. Thanks!
Thanks for uploaded the video , very useful advice
Thanks for the info. Knowledgable and well presented.
That was really helpful thank you so much!

Very helpful video thank you also appreciate the steps👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for the video, great to see how it is done right. Can you please clarify for me if one just does a single application of the oil, or does one add another layer after the hour in the oven? Many thanks
Great video thank you thank you oh my goodness love you!
Thanks Will
How do i combat lots of smoke coming out of the oven if i attempted to season the first time
Hi,
I really like this video .. it’s short enough but also really informative.
I wanted to know what do you think about seasoning a new cast iron skillet with peanut-oil? Will it do the Job ?
I'm totally here, in the comments section, to throw or sling shit at you!
How dare you answer I problem I obviously searched to find an answer for, here on UA-cam.
And I can't believe your video answered so many questions.
I'll MAYBE forgive you for helping me step by step with my cast iron, and I could POSSIBLY forget how well it all worked.
But I'll NEVER forgive you for how great my cast iron came out afterwards.
How dare you!
😅😅
Hello, great video! Just a question, when you say more seasoning layers do you mean to repeat the whole process 2-3 times? Or add more oil during this process?
I think repeat the whole process
Add more fresh oil each time you season it in the oven. Let the pan or pot cool completely each time before adding it to the oven again.
I did that newbie thing of using way too much grape seed oil and then cooking right side up. It’s not pretty. Should I remove and start again? Appreciate your clear steps and explanations.
Personally I would strip it back down. Add a nice light coat. Then after 15 minutes, wipe it like he said and put it back on
What type of pan do you recommend for cooking eggs?
What is the proper way to clean? I was taught, heat, use a steel brush to remove scraps and no soap.
They also make a steel mesh like old chain male.
When do I need to do to make it better
I don't think I'm seasoning properly because his Brown looks like a rust color in it what do I need to do
Are tomatoes acidic to the cast iron? My daughter made meat with tomato sauce..
is Crisco ok for seasoning?
Yes,its fine but a thin layer is all thats needed.Very little or youll be doing it again and it will not season properly.Less is more.Best wishes.
Question: what oven setting do u use? I always use fan bake mode which I think is wrong because each time I see bumps on my pan even though i know I've wiped the whole thing evenly.
I have the below options:
- rapid heat
- fan bake (what I usually put as default)
- bake/pizza
- base heat
- defrost (obviously not this one)
If anyone cane help that would be great
Flaxseed oil is best!
Never wash it!
