A pivot turn is a fairly advanced technique that requires a good understanding of clutch/throttle control. It is also hard to do if you have really short legs. It's totally doable, it's just very difficult. It will take a lot of practice but if you put in the time, you'll get it!
To be able to successfully do a pivot turn, you need to be comfortable using the clutch and you need to have a good understanding of the engagement point. Not being familiar with the use of the clutch and the engagement point will make this almost impossible. It's important to start at the bottom and learn the basics first!
I'm 6'1" and if I did this video it'd be "How to launch your bike into the trees - for tall people"
Ha!
first pivot turn video i have seen by a short person ,Bravo !
passa dal mio canale i sono alto 1,68 ;-)
Znam ja bolje hahahahh
I find turning your head and looking into the turn helps a lot
Agreed. Def anything motorcycle related looking to where you want to go is key, from corners to doing pivot turns.
These videos are so helpful being a short rider Just starting out in dirt biking 👍🏻
Yeah me to :)
Thank you Megs Braap! I really like the way you explain each part of your clip in detail. It's very inspiring to see you take on these
challenges and help other riders gain new skills. You have helped improve my riding quite a few times now, so THANK YOU and keep up the good work.
This is tricky for shorter riders. I'm 6'4" so I have a huge advantage when doing this. I used this technique often in the woods whenever a trail just kind of ended or got a little too ugly to continue. It was a quick way to turn around and 35 years ago my friends found it to be pretty entertaing. I also used it on some hillclimbs if I had no intention of going to the top.
I appreciate how detailed you get into the analysis. Really cool videos.
How do you feel being so helpful and encouraging to others? Such a great attitude you have!
Great tips thanks Megs. Such a great skill to have. Thanks to you I have now mastered it after 20 years of riding!!!
Great to see a pivot turn explained in detail for short riders. I watch my fellow rider pivot turn as a learner very easily due to his long legs.
Brillant video. Totally real, short people, keep it up megs. Still trying to get the wheelie mastered, using your last video. Very helpfull,
Great Video! I'm still working on it but your tips are spot on. If I lose the rear brake I end up chasing it in a circle. Thanks for the short people tips!
I too was a short rider (5'6"). Been searching on youtube about this trick (for short rider) and surprised i would simply learn it from a lady. Thanks you so much!
I think the only difference between short and tall people for pivot turns is where your butt is at. Im 5'9 and i can keep my butt right on the back of the seat when doing pivot turns. However for shorter people they cant do that so the butt needs to come off of the seat so that their foot can touch the ground. This means that they will have less control of the bike due to their weight being on the ground rather than on the bike. Great vid tho i look forward to more.
Thanks Megs have good life and be save during on bike
Well done and explained. Many thanks!
I'm 5'6 with short legs and I've been practicing this on my Surron X electric dirtbike. Along with it being a much smaller bike, having the rear brake lever be where the clutch normally is on an ICE bike helps a lot.
If you had a rear brake lever on your handlebar you'd master this technique. Good work! I believe Rekluse has rear brake set ups for hand control.
Best tutorials ever.
Thanks Meg 🤜🤛
Inspiring Megs Braap!! ❤😊
Good stuff Megs!
Great vid Megs 🤙
I'm 6'1" and this was very helpful for me!
Thanks for this. I have no problem with these on the Vino scooter I think it's because I have that LHRB, practicing on the TTR, the big bike is scary, these videos showing a smaller rider practicing these techniques are VERY helpful!
Good video, some say it's never too late to learn, maybe I should try this
Great vid. There’s hope for the little guy yet. Really enjoy your tutorials
Very nice video, Meg. You and I talked about this not long ago via another of your videos. I'm also 5'3" (on a KTM 200XC) with 28" inseam and never imagined it possible. After you and I talked, I was going to ask you to post a video of it. Thanks a bunch! Time to go practice...
Hey Meg's, nice work. Also, while you are short and skilled, I am old and broken (and maybe packing around 35 extra pounds...). Your tips help the fat old guys too .🤣 Thanks
Thank you every other video are 6’-4” riders which makes this EASY!
I got really good at theese (im 16, and i ride a yamaha dt 125)
Thinvs that helped me
1.Cover the rear brake(and focus on using it when you go over the balance point)
2.GET THE BIKE TO THE BALANCE POINT(THIS WILL HELP YOU A LOT)
3.Compress the forks as much as you can with your foot on the back brake and as it rebounds (USE AS LITTLE THROTTLE AS YOU CAN)
4.Sit all the way back on the seat
5.PRACTICE
There you go a few tips from me that really helped me😀
.
Great video. Thank you!
Fantastic info!
Great job!!! You earned my subscription
Thanks for the detailed explanations. Very didatic
Thanks I am working on pivot turns.
Thanks for this great vid. When I watch the slowmo It looks like you're applying the back brake when you're compressing the front fork and then releasing the back brake when you've shifted back. Going to give this a go.
Great tutorial!
She’s 100% on what she’s teaching but if your racing in the woods or riding hard with your friends you need to be able to do this with out moving fwd more than a foot. 12 inches. Tops!
I'm starting to learn this with your video in mind, but damn it is difficult. Either I stall the bike, or I get to 45 degrees and back off.
Main thing for me was learning to use the back brake. I felt today wasn't the day trying this for too long. After I launched my new 450 to the sky a couple of times and broke my number plate ( luckily a plexi glass reproduction plate ), I called it a day.
I thought with the torque of the new 450 EXC-F this was going to be easy-peasy... I'm so jealous of you, but I will master this some day. Even if I'm 40 years old :)
I'm totally gonna cheat and install a LHRB KIT... Lol. Awesome video as usual Meg's 🤘🤘👊
Nice skill !!
Great tips for short people love It
Subscríber from MÉXICO
I'm still working on trying to get the front wheel off the ground from your wheelie Video 🤔🤪
Very good video, thanks!!!
5'8" dude . Thank you for the awesome video!
Your (no clutch) wheelie vid was excellent, this one is even better and a display of dogged determination. I'm really struggling with pivot turns, left is ok, right is a nightmare. For me it's a confidence / commitment thing. Riding into a small bank or step (kicker), with both feet on the pegs and using the suspension to lift and turn - fall, is helping me progress. I don't have to worry about the clutch timing and bite. Balance and bodyweight in both directions seems to be the key. Awesome vids Megs, your perspective and tenacity out shines many big names sharing how to vids. Thank you.
You'll rarely see anyone pivot turn to the right, simply because the back brake is not available...
@@TractioneRag And by some mystery of physics, gravity seems to be much heavier on the right. It's my favourite direction to fall off.
I gotta say, your fails are so good they look like a success. Nice work! You might try practicing the pivot turn from a standing position. 1) You can compress the suspension equally by jumping on both pegs, 2) you'll be in a rear brake position because your foot is on the peg, 3) I've never done this from a standing start. 4) that said, maybe you can only pivot 90 degrees with this method (I've done it, a long time ago), but it still might come in handy. Great videos, keep em coming. Cheers. :) P.S. you can throw your left leg out to make the rear end turn.
Here we go again. Another good video for short legged people. 😂
Thanks!
Awesome girl!
You keep on raising the bar, you're awesome. What's your take on putting a Clake two clutch and break leaver to make those turns. Would it be easier than pressing the rear brake with your foot. I always hated the rear foot break and wished it would be more like a mountain bike.
very nice.
Thank you Megs. I love how you explain stuff and also show that you struggle like us mortals too. I don't know if you have anything suitable, but are you able to show this on a less focussed bike, maybe a dualsport DR or somit, as I am struggling to pop the front on my Beta alp 4.0? :-)
I just wish I had a grass field to practice them. I hate doing them in the rocks. Lol
Thanks good tips.
Hi megs im one of you solid follower.
is it required to learn wheelie first in order to do this?
good stuff thx
Congratulations for your channel. Did you prepare or modificate your suspension?
Thank you for your knowledge! I will try to do it with my new electric Sur-Ron dirtbike. I think it will be easier than with a petrol bike, because Sur-Ron has both brake levers on the handlebar like bicycle. It is possible to try to make a turn in any direction. But this bike has no clutch. I hope that my bike will not go far away from me.))
Good video and instruction, even for those not so short, A left hand rear brake would help you a lot for this and other things. An issue I have is attempting this with a recluse, it’s just very hard to time exactly when the clutch plates will grab and you don’t want to give to much throttle or the bike will launch to the moon. The same with obstacles, as much as I love the recluse for flowy trail there are deficiencies when it comes to timing a take off, at least in my opinion but maybe there’s a technique I haven’t figured out yet. Any input from anyone would be appreciated.
Hello Meg's brap, thanks for your expeditious responses, very enlightening. I appreciate it thanks for letting us into your world and I think your world is awesome. If you are ever in New Jersey I have a 1 + mile Motocross track , 12 or so jumps and stuff if that suits you. If not I think there's plenty of Hare Scramble stuff as well. Don't be shy honey bunny. Otherwise keep it up. Braaap, brap, brap,,,, pause, braap, as u land
Another great video megs! I know it's not popular but I use a rekluse clutch I can do a pivot turn sometimes very easy sometimes not so much I think it's got a lot to do with my timing. My question is can you do this maneuver without the clutch
Meg RESPECT !!! :-)
5'2" 69yr old here. I've been riding dirt bikes since before there were "dirt bikes". Still have not learned to pivot turn. Thank you for your videos. I also wear knee braces when I'm practicing this stuff. I buy the cheap hinge type off eBay and add a compression sleeve underneath.
We are about same height.. What dirt bike are u riding? Did you lower it to touch the ground?
@@TubolMotoadventures my main dirt bike is a crf230f that has a Kouba lowering link. I put a Hagan rear shock on it. Ordered that from England. The damper rods from the forks were sent to Bruce Triplett out in North Carolina. He welds up the holes and re drills different holes in different places according to your riding style and weight. I got a soft seat foam from Guts. If you call them they can make you an EXTRA soft seat foam. This helps get you lower and your thighs closer together when you put your feet down. I've done the open up mods and re jetted the carb. I found a 100/90 rear tire from CST that works well. I put on a Quiet Q slip on muffler. I went up one tooth on the primary sprocket because 1st gear was essentially useless and I ride in a lot of really tight trails and up any rocky old hill I come to. I think that's it. I'm now 70 and I've had 3 of these bikes. I'm currently building up a 1975 Yamaha MX400B for vintage motocross racing. That's not a tall bike at all. I ride a DR650SE Suzuki that has been lowered by factory settings and some Pro Cycle lowering links and soft seat foam. That's my daily driver. Hope this helps.
It is a hard skill for sure. A 'trials bike only' move for me at this point.
i usually don't worry about the rear brake as much as timing and preloading, obviously it's good to have it covered and tap when necessary but when pivoting the other direction you can't cover the brake anyways and it's still %100 possible to do a pivot that way.
Nice!
I cant wait to ride my bike again and do pivot turns
Very awesome way to teach.
Can you told me how many time you take to learn it pivot turn ?
For short riders be careful about that left knee(in the video her left) hyperextending with the hop when you pop your clutch
5'1 here & really struggle to keep my foot on the rear brake while my left foot is on the ground! Gaaargh!!!!
I'm 5'6, and getting on my bike is like mounting a horse. I swear the manufacturers make bikes tall so retailers can sell lowering links. For my YZ250fx and WR450f, they tried HARD to sell me lowering links and trimmed seats. It's been 7 years and I've done just fine
Yup you said it trying new skills. "Easy? Not so much"
I got a Long way to go for Shorty.
am a short and new rider , in bc, thanks for the tips, as a new rider when can i start to learn this tecnique?
im also a short rider, at about 5 foot 9, BUT i also suffer from long body short legs syndrome :( and i feel ur pain. thanks for the tips.
Badass.
What bike are you riding? Did u shorten the suspension or cut the seat foam?
It is living and exciting to watch MB practicing , feel like doing it myself
The left foot hop is important
看MB的视频就好像自己练车,会的那一刻真是欣喜异常
^^^^^^^^ What he said.
very tricky tip..would be nice to learn for shorter people!
Meg, have you ever considered going to a Beta? Their bikes are just a little shorter in seat height and it might make things a bit easier.
이 영상 보고 도움이 너무 많이 됐습니다. 누님 스텐딩 저속 윌리도 알려주심 안될까요?
So Megs, another great tutorial. Just wondering, does this mean us shorter legged folks won't be able to do pivots to the right like I've seen from greats like Graham Jarvis or Cody Webb do to rear brake requirments? Cheers.
Bryan McDonald No haha we can. We can do anything. Pivot turning to the right just takes more control and precision.
I think it is easiest to start learning it to left.
I don't think I've ever touched my rear brake doing a pivot turn. 6ft tall must make it way easier. My daughter Britney is gonna learn this tomorrow.
Is there like some threshold height, where pivot turns become easy?
where did you get that cool plastic?
Could you show this on a new 250 or same size bike? I have a new wr250f, and I am wondering how I can keep my foot on the brake when I am off the bike to get the bike moving.
I want to see video angles of all the skills with the brake and clutching perspective shown. I. Don’t always get to hear it in the videos
i'm having so much trouble compressing my forks. What weight are your running in your fork fluid?
What transmission gear are you in and what F&R sprockets sizes are you using?
What about when you have to pivot to the right when doing steep switchbacks?
K Lin keep turning left and do a 270! 😂
No rear brake just body weight and control of your clutch and throttle 😉
Sounds like a kiss yer azz good by moment ta me !
my friend just picked up a new ktm 2019 250 xc, turns out he is too short to sit on the bike, or stand. Had the suspension shortened for him, now he can fit with his tipy toes. Meg is ur bike shortend too??
And what about pivoting to the right then?
I have no right leg and no rear brake. So a video how to do it to the right would be really interesting. 😉
Hi megs, did you lower your bike a little? i have yz250fx and it is impossible for me to reach the ground.. I'm 5'1" Tall
Very helpful but have you considered tapping your front brake to help compress the forks and get the tire off the ground Abit easier and faster it was an old trick some body told me for trying to wheelie less powerful bikes easier when because I never weighed much and always had trouble compressing my forks due to being small which made bumping my forks super exhausting in his words "why waste all that energy when when the bike can do it for you???"
hi iv got a kmx 125 and like most 2stroke 125s it lacks in bottom end torque do you have any tips me as i need to put on a lot more throttle and i am worried about shooting me and the bike into orbit. cheers
How do you do it turning right?
must get left foot front.(shift lever side)
