Knowing that Eva was singing this particular song as she was battling skin cancer, just kills me. I'm sure if Judy Garland could hear this version of her iconic song (from The Wizard of Oz) she'd have been absolutely blown away as much as we all are. God rest you Eva. 💔 🙋♂
Fabulous version of this classic old song. I've messed about on acoustic guitar for 50 years, and could never get to play to this standard. And as for her voice.....makes you shiver with emotion. Great stuff.
I first heard her cover of Fields of Gold at the Winter Olympics in 2002. Such a hauntingly beautiful song.... Time After Time is also amazing. I'm a sucker for a folk singer with an acoustic guitar.
Eva's audience was silent while she sang. She sang on a very personal level - it was as if her song was sung just for you. She reached inside herself and poured her heart out while she sang and played. While it is a horrible tragedy she left us so soon, her music has left an indelible mark on her following. No other person occupies the space where Eva sang. It is hers, alone. Eva performed several acoustic songs. As I feel and hear this - her Over The Rainbow - she stands so high above every other person who has tried to cover the song by making it her journey. She takes us, her audience, on her journey as individual confidants. She goes to a place inside that I imagine not many are allowed to view. It took a few times of listening to discover this is a duet. After I got to the acceptance of how pure and heartfelt her singing is, I realized her guitar was her singing partner, singing warmly, in euphonious chorus with her. Her Guild and her touch on its strings are, indeed, her duet partner. No accompanist could have done the same. Nobody will ever be able to reach the depths of my soul such as Eva did with her journey Over The Rainbow. Be sure to react to her rendition of "Autumn Leaves."
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
I've listened to Eva's version of this wonderful song countless times and it always moves me so much. It often brings me to tears. Thank you for choosing it for a reaction from you, which I loved. Bisscute, Foreigner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week. My favorite song of theirs is I Want to Know What Love Is. It's so moving and powerful and so is the video. I hope you'll consider it for a reaction. Thank you.
@@BisscuteReacts Thank you, Biss! I look forward to your reaction to this video sometime in the future. The NEAR future, I hope. Please don't pre-judge the song by its title (book by its cover). It makes it sounds like just another soft rock ballad, but it's far from it. I promise you'll love it!
The voice and the emotion are obviously stunning. But also the guitar playing. And also the arranging, which she did herself on almost all her tracks. And, on top of that, she was a talented visual artist, mostly sketches but some paintings. I think you can still buy prints that she did. A freakishly talented person with a deep, deep soul.
Hello 👋 Miss Bisscute !!! This is a Great song sung by Judy Garland in the Original Wizard of Oz I believe from 1939 Yet Eva's Acustic Guitar 🎸 And Her unforgettable Vocals show what 1 single woman can do with her incredible Talent 👍 Yet my Favorite cover from Her is from the Movie ( Joe Somebody ) with Tim Allen called ( Songbird ) Yet the song is on the shorter side written by Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac on piano vs Eva's Guitar 🎸 Both have the Lows & Highs on vocals because of Eva's slowed down version & interpretation 😊 As always the like button 🔳 has been Illuminated ☀ 😎 🎶 🇺🇸
Singing (in tune and in time) is definitely easier if you are born with that talent. I couldn't sing my way out of a paper bag so appreciate fantastic artists such as Eva. This is my favourite cover.
Wow, that was absolutely beautiful and haunting. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. As always, enjoyed your reaction and engagement with the music.
Bisscute. She also covers the Willie Nelson song BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN. And TRUE COLORS by Cyndi Lauper. Eva was not interested in worldwide fame. She only wanted to play midic on her guitar. But she was told by the record companies that she would have to put more production into her eork for it to sell. So she sang in coffee houses and cafes. The cancer took her far too early. R.I.P. Eva.
Hello Bisscute, once again grateful to you for introducing this talented singer that I did not have the pleasure of meeting. Eva Cassidy shows great sensitivity and delicacy when she sings and plays, from what I could hear and see. Rather than an optimistic dream of escape, as in the original version, in Cassidy's interpretation it seems more like a whisper of sadness for what will never be achieved. His approach gives the song a more mature emotional depth, charged with the feeling that that ideal place may never arrive. Without a doubt a great interpretation. For a next reaction, I suggest it be to another talented woman, Joan Baez Performing Blowin' in the Wind (Live 1978). Greetings and a hug from Mexico City.
Very good EVA for creating the atmosphere of being embraced by your love in front of the fireplace but unfortunately I still have in mind the incredible version of the unsurpassed Sydnie Christmas 🌺
Hi! I am a fan living in the U.S. State of Florida. I am glad you found Eva! What a voice! I see you have not yet found Lucy Thomas. As much as I love Eva Cassidy's voice she cannot match Lucy's voice in its smooth richness and power. Lucy is the best female singer in western culture. In my humble opinion she is the female equivalent of Dimash! Please react to any of her many songs, but if you could choose Memories or One Moment In Time you would make me so happy! Thank you and keep'em coming! :)
Well, it had to be a cover, because Over the Rainbow (music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by E. Y. Harburg) was originally a song that was first created as part of the soundtrack to the musical film The Wizard of Oz, but developed into an evergreen. It dates back to 1939 and was sung by the then very young Judy Garland (1939 = 17 years young). After the film premiere, the song was covered very quickly and actually has been covered over and over again up to the present day.
For all of the concerts that I have attended in my life, I only remember the final song from one concert...when I saw Eric Clapton perform this song. It was the perfect song to end his show. And to Biss' point of there being a number of artists who have covered this song, it's one of those songs that can be interpreted/reinterpreted to best suit the individual artist without losing the spirit of the song.
Yeah I believe it was a BBC Radio 2 producer who had played it on another show on the station a few days earlier and Terry heard it and played it everyday on his show which was the biggest radio show in the UK. His audience kept asking for it and he played it several times on that 1st day alone. I was listening at the time and had to pull over and be late for work just to listen to it each time.
Eva was an amazing artist. Her gift went way beyond hard work, although she did that too. She was just beginning to be noticed and her career would have taken off if she hadn't been lost to cancer. If you want to hear a happy one by Eva I recommend "How Can I Keep From Singing" Love your reactions, Biss.
Eva was truly one of the greatest female singers I have ever heard in my life. Her father was a musician and taught her how to play the guitar (and she was so good with that instrument). Her voice was most likely, like you commented, a gift from birth. But she also worked hard at it. She passed far too soon. She could sing anything. 'Fields of Gold', 'Autumn Leaves', 'Songbird' and 'Tall Trees In Georgia' and many more a just beautiful works! Thanks for the reaction to this master.
Home town girl Eva Cassidy. So to answer your question, yes, singing is very much a skill you can learn. Most people don't just come out of the womb with this ability. It's something you have to cultivate and train. Even the greatest singers had to build up to their ability.
Whilst I agree with you just as other skills in life some people are just born to play and I think this is pure talent (obviously I'm sure she practiced as well, but I think she, and certain other musicians, are naturals that do things differently, instinctively).
I am writing this to help out bisscute and this video and this channel with the algorithm everyone hit the like button and the share button and copy the link it helps bisscute a lot and check out her other channels and her twitch channel and most importantly her Patreon 🥹🙏
Eva Cassidy was amazing. While alive, she didn't make it far in the US, mainly because US record companies wouldn't sign her. US record companies are stupid. Your reaction was beautiful, too - going from "Yeah, I've heard this before, whatever." To "Wow! This is amazing!" Thanks for not cutting it up.
Eva Cassidy - she was a brilliant meteor - streaking across the skies sending the most wonderful vibrations through our ears and into our hearts and imaginations - and then she was gone. There then gone and we all feel blessed for having heard her sing. This one is so special because she is playing the guitar beautifully in perfect concert with her beautiful vocal stylings. She was born with talent - no doubt she worked hard to hone her talents but she was a natural musical talent.

David Cassidy was on a TV sitcom in the 70s called "The Partridge Family", that was a big deal back then, before my time, about a widow and her five children that form a band, or something like that, and David Cassidy was like a teenage heart throb that all the girls liked in the 70s, and then, I guess his younger brother Shaun also started getting work as a teenager off his brother's celebrity? Something like that, but that obviously wasn't the case. I had to look her up, and it is actually quite sad. She was from Washington D.C., and was known there, but not really by anyone else, and then she died fairly young from cancer. Then somehow after her death, this song and a cover of a "Fields Of Gold", which is a Sting song from the 90s, became popular on the radio in the UK, and it brought her the attention that she never had in life. Eva didn't do "covers" -- she took other people's songs and made them hers, so that you can't really listen to the original artist in the same way again. Fields of Gold, Autumn Leaves, Songbird, ... so many others. What a tragic loss.
She was a heck of a guitarist along with that beautiful voice.! 😮

Her cover of Stings Fields of Gold is beautiful
