So sad to think only 10 months after this wonderful recording, Eva was dead. She had the voice of an angel, and now she is one herself. God bless her. 💔
Haven't scrolled the comments....but this is a Live rendition, no audio help and her superb finger style guitar playing adds so much to this performance.
When this Video was first released over here in the UK, i saw it on a music programme called, Top of the Pops, while the song was playing they put on screen the information about how she had passed away a few months after this was recorded, i was in floods of tears, my wife came into the room and asked me what was wrong, i couldn't answer her, i just pointed at the telly. I will never understand how this lady, with such a beautiful voice, was a virtually unknown singer.
One of the most beautiful renditions ever performed of this song. And, so tragic that around 9 months later, she was gone :( I cry EVERY time I hear this song....and her performance!
She was a true original and there will never be another Eva Cassidy. Her covers done at Blues Alley are incredible. Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, Time After Time. She was even more renowned as a jazz/blues singer. Stormy Monday among others. Check out her UA-cam channel. She is phenomenal. Gone so soon and much missed by her fans. Thank you for sharing and keeping her and her prodigious talent alive through her music.
You need to hear Fields of Gold done by Eva Cassidy. I first heard it when figure skater Michelle Kwan skated to decades ago. Her version touches my heart.
Yes. Even Sting gave a copy of Eva Cassidy's Songbird CD to his friend record producer David Foster to listen to and said her version of his song Fields of Gold was the best he had ever heard.
This is the song that made her famous. A radio DJ in London played it and the phones lit up..., went from there to throughout Europe, and officially America. She was literally unheard by many people. She was offered fame, but refused to comply with the rat race. She had her own style.
It was actually Paul Walters who was the producer of the BBC Radio, Terry Wogan show who heard the song and had Terry play it on his show. The rest is history, and how fortunate we are it happened.
Her arrangement, the texture of her voice, and being recorded live, is mind-blowing. Such a talent! Gone way too soon. I recommend 'Stormy Monday' if you want that real blues flair from her.
Some of her best covers were Songbird", and "Fields of Gold". She played a lot of clubs in DC. She would have made it big had she lived. Beautiful ethereal voice. She was so special. I have her CD and her songs are all amazing❤.
According to one book written about her(with comments from friends and family),Eva was very disappointed with this video when she saw and heard it…to the point of tears! She had a cold and some of the notes dropped off a bit in places! Pretty unbelievable, right? It’s just so darn beautiful! Thanks for your wonderful reaction!❤️
It's the best version for me, period. Besides Eva's incredible vocal and melodic talents (such note choices), slowing it down was brilliant, too. There's more space for yearning and reflection, which her voice pulls you right into. It's also amazing that this is a live performance, just her and her guitar, about as intimate as you can get. I could go on, I'm such a fan, but I'll just say that although she passed, I'm consoled with the thought she now lives in the hearts of the many of have been gifted by Eva's heavenly voice. RIP.
What makes this so very sad is that she was not well when this was done. One of my personal favorites that she has done was "Autumn Leaves". The very last song that she performed in public was, "Wonderful World". THANK YOU!
I didn't know that What a Wonderful World was the last song that Eva performed in public,i thought that it might have been because at the end of the version i have, she says to the audience, " thank you for coming, live happily ",probably knowing that she only had a short time for herself. So sad.
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
Those rare moments when her voice cracks or loses phonation are everything, the imperfections that elevate the humanity of her expression to the sublime.
My fiancee recently commited suicide just over a month ago and this was a very special song for us. He played it on ukulele and me on piano, or just sing it to each other when the other was down. The last night i saw him alive he told me to close my eyes, walked in kissed my head and layed a rose in my lap..... Sat on his knee and sang this to me.... Such a special song.. this was breathtaking and ur words are so special. We would tell each other exactly what u said..... Close ur eyes and lets go over..... Together. We believed it was a song to get away for just a few minutes even. I have only recently discovered these reaction videos and u and one other i cant get enough of. When i figure the whole thing out u will most def have my support. I fight depression so so bad snd ur words on many videos speak so much. God bless u and as a medical professional myself for many years... God bless what u do away from here as well... Looking forward to so much more! Hugs. Matt
Her covers are incredible ..they redefine the originals ....time after time and fields of gold are incredible ...the nuances...the vocal phrasing ..the power ..but she also can sing the hell out of a song ..and some of her blues numbers are vocal masterclasses ...
Less reveals more, yes? And, in that moment of transference, as it can only happen through Music, is the soul of the listener also revealed. You have a beautiful soul, Nick! Revel in it, and continue to share in it! God bless you!
Her life story needs to be told. I first heard about her on a segment of Nightline back in the late 90’s. A true artist, immensely talented and yet she struggled with insecurities. Record labels wanted her but she couldn’t and wouldn’t commit to one genre - jazz, folk, pop, rock. She was struck down at a very young age (33) by cancer. This performance, on her Live ar Blues Alley (a bar in Washington DC) album was recorded and filmed while she was valiantly fighting for her life. She left behind an incredible treasure of individual recordings of songs, which her family compiled into albums and sold - with profits going to music education programs, in her honor. But the truly extraordinary part is that through a beautiful chain of events, this song became HUGELY successful in the UK after a gifted tape was played on BBC Radio. When a video was demanded for Top of the Pops, the only thing they could offer was this performance. It became one of the most highly requested videos of that year. Several years after she passed, she became internationally famous and acclaimed. I was in Sydney, Australia in 1999 and a record store an entire display dedicated to her. I strongly recommend her rendition of Billie Holiday’s “You’ve changed” but her cover of the classic Irish song, “Danny Boy” will make you weep.
This song was written during the Great Depression. It was intended to encourage long-suffering masses to look forward and dream of happier days ahead. Mission accomplished.
Nick, this show was in January of 1996, she passed that November! Such a tragedy that she never was able reach stardom. She covered many songs, making them her own. She did a duet album with Soul singer Chuck Brown that was really phenomenal.
Nick, since you loved this classic so much, as do I, I highly recommend her cover of the Sting classic, Fields of Gold. Talk about a tear jersey! Omg ❤
Very nice, genuine reaction. Her exquisite musical taste and insight brings out the very adult sadness in the lyric. Garland is great, but she's a teenage farmgirl wanting to escape. This is on another level entirely.
Yes, her re-imagining of this song is awesome. Better still, in my opinion, is her rendition of Autumn Leaves. It is absolutely beautiful with a fantastic piano part in the middle. Please react to that one too...
As Ive grown older, I have come to understand that some songs *pick* the singer, and this version is owned by Eva. The original from the movie was about hope and new beginnings. This version is reflective, introspective and tender. Eva has great versions of Autumn Leaves, Fields of Gold and so on, but this one, to me, is hers
Hi Nick, it's been a while! I hope all is well with you and I'm glad to see the growth of your channel! Eva is one of my favorite female vocalists and it is sad that we lost her so early. She was a multi-generational talent. One of the things about this particular song that struck me is that although she did not know at the time of this performance of her coming fate, it seemed as if she did. Her expressions and tone and the gaze in her eyes were haunting to me. I hope you will do more Eva as there are a number of songs she is famous for. Peace out.
Hi Nick. It's nice to see you! For me, it's been awhile. I'm so glad that you have discovered Eva. Although there's not alot of content, from her passing so early, every bit of it is wonderful. Enjoy checking her out more😊💜
You just reacted to a musical icon! Not recognized until after passing. This was the most beautiful version of this song ever recorded. She truly had the most angelic voice. She is so missed. You have to react to Autumn Leaves, it will break your heart.
It's worth hearing Ava together with Angelina Jordan in a virtual connection to Sting's song "Fields of Gold" one of the most exciting performances It will make you regret what we lost but be grateful for what exists in the world of music.
Eva's upcoming album - Walkin' After Midnight - has a cover of Summertime which is not to be missed. Thanks for the wonderful comments on this video - great job!!
Holy Cow. Mike + The Mechanics. REM. Now you are hitting Cassidy's rendition of 'Over The Rainbow'. Hope your tear ducts have recovered. (has Alex suggested any Genesis?)
Beautiful reaction. So glad another person got to hear her voice and her music. Her version of Fields of Gold is another song of hers I would recommend. Sting acknowledged it was better than his
Now we must listen to Judy Garland's version from 'The Wizard of Oz'. However this has to go on my top 10 best performances ever given. What an incredible interpretation. So effortless. Now I suppose you will hit Dire Straits 'Brothers In Arms'.
Go on one more with her version of the Sting song, Fields of Gold. I had to subscribe because I like the sensitivity you gave this incredible artist. Thank you!
You MUST listen to Oh, Had I A Golden Thread. If you have any notion that this is indicative of her vocal range, don’t. She’s got WAY more in the tank!
This performance was sublime, as was the whole Live at Blues Alley album. Watch it on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/SgBTG_HOvMQ/v-deo.htmlsi=2cigJp2rWZmV4Y80
So sad to think only 10 months after this wonderful recording, Eva was dead. She had the voice of an angel, and now she is one herself. God bless her. 💔
And she had a cold in this performance. Truly one of the greatest voices ever recorded. THE storyteller.
One of Eva's greatest gift was making every song she covered her own.
Haven't scrolled the comments....but this is a Live rendition, no audio help and her superb finger style guitar playing adds so much to this performance.

She’s extraordinary. You won’t regret listening to ANYTHING she sings. Autumn Leaves, Fields of Gold, Nightbird…all impeccable and moving.
Thank you for those suggestions
Please check out Chris de Burghs tribute to Eva Cassidy called Songbird.
Don't forget Time! AFTER Time
In the hundreds of times I've listened to Eva's beautiful version I've never got away without shedding a tear.
Agree 100%
Me too.
This woman uses her gift of music to touch people's souls. An amazing gift humanity had for a short period of time.
One of the most beautiful renditions ever performed of this song. And, so tragic that around 9 months later, she was gone :( I cry EVERY time I hear this song....and her performance!
This is the best cover of this classic song I’ve ever heard

Well said. Agree 100%.
Her version of Fields of Gold is a must listen.

So very sorry to hear this. Please take care of yourself.
@laurabarlaj6836 thank you sweetie!!
So beautiful! We lost her way too soon. Also listen to her Fields of Gold. ❤🙏
Sitting here crying AGAI N as I watch your reaction to Eva's cover of "Over The Rainbow"! I love this cover and enjoy it EVERY TIME I hear it.
Such an amazing tune
Eva Cassidy - oh wow, I'm so happy to see you you react to this angel!!
Please watch her mini documentary, she never knew how people loved her voice ❤
Her covers are incredible ..they redefine the originals ....time after time and fields of gold are incredible ...the nuances...the vocal phrasing ..the power ..but she also can sing the hell out of a song ..and some of her blues numbers are vocal masterclasses ...
I highly recommend you to react to her singing "Oh, had I a golden thread" to listen to her full vocal capacity !
Her Autumn Leaves and Stormy Monday are incredible too.
Less reveals more, yes? And, in that moment of transference, as it can only happen through Music, is the soul of the listener also revealed. You have a beautiful soul, Nick! Revel in it, and continue to share in it! God bless you!
This is you USA , what we all thought of your lands , its one of your daughters , like an angel ..a true classic

The voice of an Angel …
Thanks for the reaction Nick! Other great songs by Eva worth listening to are "Autumn Leaves" and "Fields of Gold."
I have listened to this performance several times over about 3 years. I tear up every time. Thank you for your fine reaction to this masterpiece.
One of my favorite renditions of this song. So poignant!
This song was written during the Great Depression. It was intended to encourage long-suffering masses to look forward and dream of happier days ahead. Mission accomplished.
This song makes me cry anyway, and her version is just unique. So sad that she passed away a few months later. Love your reaction to this classic.

She does a wonderful job with an all time classic. Beautiful voice and rendition. Love it.
Yes, her re-imagining of this song is awesome. Better still, in my opinion, is her rendition of Autumn Leaves. It is absolutely beautiful with a fantastic piano part in the middle. Please react to that one too...
Thank you for showcasing her. She was brilliant! Check our Imagine, Fields of Gold and I Know You By Heart! ❤❤❤
Nothing else compares to this version. Truly awesome. Makes me cry every time I hear it. Your reaction was so heart felt.
Autumn Leaves recorded at the same venue is a must see as well.

Your analysis nailed it!
Loved her and still and always will
Eva was sick during this performance..... exquisite nonetheless......

Beautiful reaction. So glad another person got to hear her voice and her music. Her version of Fields of Gold is another song of hers I would recommend. Sting acknowledged it was better than his
Such a beautiful soul with an angelic voice gone so soon. F the demon cancer.
I don't think you can find a more exquisitely beautiful version of this song than that of Eva Cassidy
Now we must listen to Judy Garland's version from 'The Wizard of Oz'. However this has to go on my top 10 best performances ever given. What an incredible interpretation. So effortless. Now I suppose you will hit Dire Straits 'Brothers In Arms'.

It's beauty is in its' simplicity.
Makes your heart ache
It's like she knew her time was almost gone
I love her phrasing.
Reminds me of my late mum &Sister, I cry everytime I hear this. I'm a 60yr old man 😢
Sorry to hear that :(
She made that song herself. Knowing she died so young is heartbreaking.
If you grew up with the cutesy Judy Garland "Wizard of Oz" version, this takes the same song and makes it soo sad and emotional. Fantastic.
Totally incredible Joan
you need to play her version of danny boy, awesome
Also how she doesn’t rush her notes. She lets them play out.
You MUST listen to Oh, Had I A Golden Thread. If you have any notion that this is indicative of her vocal range, don’t. She’s got WAY more in the tank!
Sydnie Christmas version is great!
You should listen too fields of gold . It really is a spiritual experience....
You just heard an angel
You should see her do Danny Boy. Tears.
Hey ! Would love to see you react to few Kellyokes that kelly Clarkson has done on her show ! You’d love it
"Autumn Leaves".
This performance was sublime, as was the whole Live at Blues Alley album. Watch it on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/SgBTG_HOvMQ/v-deo.htmlsi=2cigJp2rWZmV4Y80
Watch the entire live performance at Blues Alley:

Been listening from b4 she died. Talent lost way too soon. Nana Karen UK
Beautiful, not you , her.
lol thanks for the distinction
