  • The Matildas, Australia's women's football team, have high expectations heading into the Olympics. They finished fourth in the 2023 World Cup and are aiming to win a medal in Paris. However, there are concerns about the team's depth and the absence of key player Sam Kerr. The team's ceiling is seen as a bronze medal, but they have the potential to surprise. Caitlin Ford is identified as the X factor, while Mary Fowler and Kyra Cooney-Cross are highlighted as breakout stars. The team's style of play is described as high-energy and risk-taking, with an emphasis on speed and versatility. The conversation covers various topics related to the Matildas and Australian women's soccer. The first theme discussed is the strength of the Matildas' wide plays and midfielders, as well as the potential challenge posed by Zambia's strong center forwards. The second theme revolves around the controversy surrounding the recognition of the 1975 Australian women's team as the first official Matildas team. The third theme focuses on the challenges faced by the A-League women's competition in Australia, including the loss of star players like Courtney Vine to overseas clubs. Overall, the conversation highlights the need for investment and development in women's soccer in Australia.

Great interview! The absence of Sam Kerr is obviously a killer for Australia! Also, a defensive spine of Hunt/Kennedy is likely to concede 3 goals against Banda/Kundananji. In order to have a shot at the quarters, Australia will need to outscore Zambia and I will be rooting for them to do so.

Great interview. Excellent prep for my upcoming trip to Marseille where I will see Australia at least twice. I was surprised to hear Samantha's view that the midfield for USWNT is still the weakness. Lavelle is now fit. Demelo, Sullivan and Sanchez have been replaced by Coffey, Macario, Shaw and Albert. Are Gorry, Cooney-Cross, Van Egmond and Fuller really better? Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden played five midfielders and three back to get draws. I don't think the three back is feasible against Smith, Swanson and Rodman. There will be too much space to cover. Also surprised that she thinks Vine might be faster than Carpenter. Courage will have a fast front line with Vine added to Manaka and Nicoli after a rather pedestrian first half of the season. Marseille here I come.

a relative weakness perhaps, in the sense that we now need 2 players to replace Julie (in a double pivot), and we're still waiting to replace Mewis' physicality and headed goals. Also, our midfielders have not played much together yet, whether in an offensive formation (Horan, Coffey, Macario), or defensive double pivot (Lavelle, Coffey, Albert). No, the Australian midfield is not better than ours, but the Spanish one certainly is (Alexia, Aitana, Patri)

@@eliedabdab4339 The scary thing about Spain is that in the World Cup Final, they started Theresa and Hermosa along with Aitana in the midfield. They have experienced depth in every group and consistently finish first or second in the youth competitions. In the under 16s Spain just won the Euros easily. I would love to be in Cali for the under 20 Spain vs USA group stage game in September. I am disappointed that Yohannes is not on the squad. The Golden Ball winner in the under 20 is a who's who of women's football. Sinclair, Marta, Larue, Sugita, Popp, Marozan, Patri, Oshoala. There are only one or two I don't recognize.

Vine is faster, and probably Rasso. Its going to be an interesting battle in the midfield with US. I like the options Hayes has. My question over the US is defense. That's only because I haven't seen them challenged yet :) The forward line is going to be a nightmare. Without Kerr I feel we will potentially struggle.

The midfield is just broken for the US, they need Demelo (who can progress the ball, actually is fast compared to Coffey and Horan), Sanchez is creative and can play in tight spaces.

Sanchez is not very efficient on her shot which puts her behind Lavelle, Macarrio and Bethune which is my logic for not putting her on the team. Sanchez is always available where the other three all have injury histories. My fear is that USWNT is going to die on the Lavelle hill again. I hope not. Group just got way easier with Oberdorf injured. If you see a fat seventy year old American wandering around Marseille say hello. Go USWNT.
