    I've been watching sports for over 60 years, from ice hockey, American football, baseball, even footy, and soccer. And I've seen great games. But the ending to the Australia-France quarter final at the Women's World Cup had to be one of the greatest finishes to a game that I've ever seen. Being a Canadian who lived in Adelaide for two years, I got goosebumps watching the ending. It was just pure joy that I experienced vicariously. Well done, Matildas!

      I don't know about the best finishes to a game (Mbappe vs Messi WC final was pretty special) but the France vs Matidas was gripping and shoot out was certainly the best penalty shootout ever (male or female football).

    You are a special sports people who changed the game forever. You are a big motivation to the future players and I hope my young girl soccer players will be part of the team one day. I'm working towards it.

    The women's game is definitely growing (fast) but the host was being a little disingenuous when he said that Arsenal's men's side would be playing in front of only 11 thousand (16:00) and the women's team would be playing in front of close to 60 thousand. He wasn't lying he was just being deliberately misleading, because In that very instant, without having to look it up, I and any English football supporter would have known immediately that Arsenal's men's team must have been scheduled to play away against Bournemouth FC. Why?... because Bournemouth is the only club in the EPL that has a stadium with a capacity of only 11 thousand. Just to put this in perspective, all 24 clubs in the championship (English football's 2nd tier) have bigger stadium capacities.
    FYI, whenever you see the attendance figures at the end of an English Premier League game, you should understand that it is not just the number of people that attended, it is also the stadium's capacity, because all EPL games are always a guaranteed sellout.
    The Arsenal women were obviously playing at the Arsenal men's stadium (a rare privilege) which has a capacity of 60 thousand. As recently as 2 years ago, the Arsenal women could never have filled the stadium to anywhere near its capacity so yes the host was justified in saying that the women's game has exploded in popularity (especially after England Women's Euro 2022 win), just not at the expense of the men's game, as his comments suggested.

    • @MyPaddy2011
      @MyPaddy2011 6 місяців тому +4

      I think this is a fair comment, though I don't think the moderator meant to suggest that men's soccer has suffered. Yes, women's soccer has exploded since the Euros and especially here in OZ. It has gone totally ballistic from nowhere in two months really. No one could ever have predicted this. To have such following for a team that hasn't won anything in a global sense, is extraordinary, breathtaking and grounds for great envy.

    • @beyondthepage9389
      @beyondthepage9389 6 місяців тому

      @@MyPaddy2011 I think we can at least agree that the moderator was up to a little bit of mischief (he knew what he was doing). I reside in the land of the EPL so that was never going to slip beneath my radar but you, out there in Matilda land, most likely might have missed this sleight of hand.
      I first discovered the Matilda's during the 2015 women's WC, and have followed their progress ever since (i.e. I know most of the players and the respective clubs they've played for over the years), that's why I watched this Matilda's addition of 60 minutes (which is only 30 minutes by the way) as well as many of the Aussie post-World Cup 2023 news items, so I was aware of the increased popularity, but to hear (first hand) that "It has gone totally ballistic" (confirmation on the growth if you will) is especially revealing.
      The EPL club that I support currently has three Matilda's (maybe you can name the club?...). Another EPL team used to have three Matilda's but they only have two now (the other one now plays in Spain) maybe you know this team and the player as well???...

      Obviously there is not as much going on since the world cup has ended but all the friendlies and Olympic qualifiers since then has proven that women's soccer is at a level that we could have never predicted before the women's world cup.
