Good video and studio one keeps impressing me!! Two notes though: 1. At 8:20 you say that you can't color the layers individually, but you can! The color selector is to the right of the layer solo button. 2. At 11:59 you have the third layer soloed and never take it off, which means none of the stuff you do after actually makes it into the song. Would probably be nice if soloed layers showed up in the left side inspector because it completely overrides the selected layer without showing you. 😁
The reason that I have Studio One is because out of the blue pne of your video pop out and I started watching it, did the 30 day try out, man by day 10 I bought it, So much easier, work flow. Every time I see you on a thumbnail I click it and its amazing, I learn every single time! Respect for you and all the Team that brings knowledge 🙏
In S1, I always set the recording mode to Multiple Takes before I start recording so the program automatically creates my layers as I punch in and out, whether I am loop recording or not. Also, I never bother with renaming the comp layers because I'm good with the default naming. I think S1 comping is simply fantastic and it has really helped me forget about the pain of moving on from Sonar. BTW Joe, you sound like Martin Smith, minus the accent, of course LOL!
I have been watching you for years. Way before you hooked up with studio one. You have taught me so much. Today u made me laugh cause in all the years of watching you. I have never heard you be cocky. You said if I need to use melodyne for pitch correction. But I don't lmfaooooooo. Your voice sounds great
Joe ... thanks for laying this out so clearly. New to SO 6 from the dark side (PT). I've been meaning to search on this for an upcoming session this weekend. Just started my normal YT eve lessons and here it is. Also, Killer voice my guy! I was not expecting that as I'm catching up on ALL your previous how-to's. Fantastic work and I've caught an interview that explains how you started your PreSonus journey (& beyond).
I knew most of the tricks already, just doing a refresher before I lay down my nylon guitar tracks. Consolidate, now that is the one I was missing! Thanks for your help, great vid, and just like everyone else here, AMAZING VOICE and great choice of notes for that chord progression!
Loved that song Joe! 5/4 it sounded like and made a lot of sense! Beautiful, when can we expect to hear the full song? Im gathering on a upcoming EP? Thanks for the lessons too of course 😀
Joe, you didn't have to go this hard for a comping tutorial, but you did. Nailed those highs every single time. Jukebox Hero. ❤🔥 P.S. What was that vocal fx chain?
I’ll add my “voice” to say that by selecting “record in layers” on the bottom toolbar, you get all the layers and the main comp track displayed for you without any additional clicks. I’m not sure, but I think I learned that from you, Joe, a few years ago. That made it possible for me to even consider recording my work, with my limited skills as a singer and guitar player. Seems like today’s version takes more effort than that.
Good day, Please I am recording a single track on a beat track. I am only exporting my audio recording to be sent to my producer. The tempo of the beat is 135, 48Khz and 64bit rate. I set all these on my export settings and even before I started recording. When I play back my audio everything is fine but once I export and send to my friend, the tempo kept skipping and Jumping( From 135, to 137, to 138, sometimes 154) This has been happening and getting me frustrated. I have reinstalled the app several times. I have also sent the same audio to 3 different people with different software and the problem remains the same. Please, I need your help
Another great lesson, Joe. Once I make a Comp track, can I make another unique one one from the same layers in order to get a double tracked vocal? This is assuming I have several good layers to comp from.
Well dang. I watch your tutorials cause there's always something to learn, regardless how long I've been doing this. But dude, I didn't realize you had a great voice....
@@Emily_M81 Thanks 🙂, but I've only found tutorials with one audio track. What I meant was the alignment of multiple audio tracks. The end result should be that all tracks are in the same beat. "VocALign Ultra" as an example, can do that and my hope/wish was that Studio One would offer a similar function.
Nice tut. Me i loop record and record. Some loops i even take a break and resume on the next loop. Then i erase the blank ones. I loop playback and chose. Once you choose a piece you can double click on another layer above or below and it changes that piece in realtime while loop playback. I fell in love with this workflow. Easy peasy
Great video! Regarding 13:14, when you used command B for bounce, how did you keep it mono? On my windows-based system, when I CTRL B, it takes the consolidated comp from a mono bounce to a stereo (2 channel) bounce. Thanks for the help!
Awesome video, I have been doing this manually for years… over a decade intact and I am very good at it… some of the artists I have worked with call it my “chop suey” style, in addition I would move backups around to match Main etc.. (hip hop) .. but this is pretty cool. I have also had an artist record like 3-5 takes all the way through rapping over the previous versions (which usually gets them to throw more style or emphasis on the newer takes, then I would listen to one til I find a mistake and blend in one of the other layers… This makes it even easier thank you.
Been using Studio One 3 since 2017 (finally about to update soon). But have never known this was an option and was this easy, always did separate tracks then comped manually. Also great voice. Lastly, a little trick that was used for Dave Grohl (I believe) who wanted to track vocals to speakers instead of with headphones. Flip the phase while recording, then after it's recorded, flip the phase again and a good portion of the speaker bleed will be gone.
Good stuff. I like looping over the track to be comped. Need to make sure the record-to-layer option is selected. It's faster cause you don't need to think about or name your tracks. They all fall under the track you are recording.
I've never considered the Project page because I dont even attempt mastering my work.(I don't know how to) But your idea of using it for "Ideas" is brilliant. And I have alot of them that just get mixed into the rest on my song page. So I will give this some serious consideration to organise my stuff better in the Project Page! I have SI 4 Professional so it should work for me. Thankyou Joe!
There's a button on the transport that has record takes and you can record as many layers as you want as long as you set loop and after that, you can take anyone of the layers and they automatically comp into the main track. I have been using that on S1 for a long time and it's so fast and seamless
I came upon this vid by accident, and glad I did! I've been struggling to put together takes of vocals and keys, and this should make it much easier. Does it work with midi tracks as well? I don't have near enough time to record, so any time savers area big help. BTW, I've been making progress in moving through the chest voice into the head voice for several decades, and maybe in another fifty years I'll be almost as good as you!
Awesome voice, Joe! Great song, too. Is 'Snap to Zero Crossings' useful with comping, or does that just complicate things? Perhaps unnecessary if cross fading.
PS: Why not just call it compiling..?? It only takes like maybe 2/10th of a second to pronounce the whole word, and then we don't have to find a new abbreviation for compressing :-)
Hello friend, you’re a great singer- love the ambient Radiohead-esque timbre you’ve got. I was just curious about what vocal signal chain you’re running into your daw, as in What mic pre eq or compressor are you running -whether external hardware or digital emulation? Cheers!
Hi @joe gilder Helpful video. Great melody there in that tune. If I have 2 acoustic guitar tracks recorded simultaneously with 2 mics, can I make the same selection area in both tracks and auto-punch both simultaneously?
this is great .I am going to use this. how your vocals are only captured , though you are singing by listening to the beat. I always faced difficulty in rendering a good robust vocal with my headphones on. when I sing without headphones, the vocals are far far better and very clean.landings are perfect. can you tell how the technique behind this.
Hi Joe, good vid... but wondering why you jumped thr all those hoops by creating a new take manually in the inspector . All I do is high light the " takes to layers " in lower left hand corner , and it does it automatically.... is there a reason you don't use this ? thanks, ed
I have a problem and I don't know hot to technically solve it in studio one 5. I have a kick drum and a layer but the transient of the layered kick is out of phase while the tail is in phase. How can I , in studio one edit my audio file so I can draw out (or cut off basically) the transient of the layered kick without doing every single one by hand ? Thank you
Nice video. I've changed from Mac to Windows and therefore am leaving Logic. Torn between Studio One and actually Cakewalk. In all honesty, comping is good in Studio One but really great in Cakewalk. In Cakewalk you can simply set the recording mode to comping. It automatically creates new comp sub tracks. This way you van record in loop creating a new comp track for every loop. You can simply set sections and jump between them with the arrow keys and select the one you like. This one goes to you main track. Really fast and intuitive. Checking out some more tutorials from both DAWs before choosing
Hey joe another great and informative video, I have learned so much from watching ur videos since I started with studio 1 in 2019. Voice is sweet and tune reminds me of Radiohead, which is great 👍. Keep up the good work.
Really blown away by your singing - wasn't expecting that at all - Great Video :)
Same, that was amazing!
@@carstenaltena Same - I was like - WHAT! lol Wasn't expecting that lol
Nice voice bro, was not expecting u to sound like that 🔥
The voice of an Angel
Right I was like wtf 😂
Same. Wasn’t expecting tenor range at all.
Right
WOW!! I never heard you singing until now. I am blown away. WOW!!!
That was a great vocal sound and melody! Well done, Joe! The tip is also great!
What an amazing voice Joe. Wow🔥🔥🔥🔥
Your vocals are impressive, Joe.
Thanks for these great tutorials. I had no idea these features existed. And as somebody already mentioned, your vocals are killer good! 🤗

Do any shortcut to tuggel between different takes for selected region?
I do this too. It is an effective way to loop record multiple takes.
lovely vocals Joe, can't decide which is more amazing, your vocals or S1
Damn Joe I did not know or think you could sing so well. That falsetto was awesome, and coming from your deep talking voice, wow!!!!!!
Where can I find your song? It’s Beautiful ⭐️

really cool Radiohead vocal feel Joe - keep it coming
Such a great voice 😮

A Helpful Tutorial, thx. Is there any easy way in Studio One to align vocal tracks, which has timing problems?

Thanks for this very useful video Joe !
I thought the layers were automatically created each time you hit record on the track?
For this I think you first have to change the recording mode to "Takes to Layers" in the Transport setup.
First thanks for your great video and second you have a really lovely voice bro 👍👍👍
Nicely done, Joe. And your voice is awesome :)
