Bodywork 101 EDP Coatings - Should it be removed?

- Basically EDP is Electro Deposit Primer, a protective coating applied to steel replacement automotive panels. This primer protects during transport and storage and adds a layer of corrosion resistance after priming and painting.... Most of the Time we remove it to verify that no rust has got underneath the coating.. we have had many cases where Lacquer EDP has had this. Todays video show both, and a better coating that has nothing.

Thanks Earl. I had a vw exhaust which had been coated. I had to remove it because it looked like it had been finger painted. Great advice!
Really appreciate and enjoy the knowledge, thanks
I work at a collision repair shop and the different kinds of coatings they use on new plastic bumper covers is a real pain. I would much rather be dealing with rust and other classic car problems. I need to find a job at a restoration shop. Unfortunately where I live, it's hard to find
Great video and information I’m restoring a 67 beetle I’m putting it in epoxy primer after the welding work when’s best to do body filler before epoxy or after if you had a video on this would be great thanks
Sorry it took me a bit to reply UA-cam comments are getting buried. You are very welcome!! I prefer body work after roughing the epoxy real good... Old days we just went to metal and sealed... either way, as long as its sealed.
Are you referring about e-coating? Here the most body shops said its
the best and possible to paint onto e-c coated bodies, and panels.
There are about 10 to this specialised shops throughout Europe and
some of them have waiting lists up to 6 months. The most referred
use the right voltage and amps to coat whole bodies into their dip tank
(15'000 metric Litres capacity). The botchers are then the one with the
short waiting list. I agree that some oem have this fussy coating you
talk about but it depends on the automotive brand, or the supplier of it.
So on all of your EDP panel you apply Epoxy then 2k primer?
On the inside of a new cowl , does it need to be painted before welding in? Can you just prime it a fog paint on the inside?
we try to do anything we can to stop anything from corrosion.. we make sure to prep the spots where welding before or even panel bonding. weld through primer is good, if bonding you have to have metal to metal adhesion.
Hi!
I would like to remove the edp coating from my bicycle frame but i don't want to sand it because i would like to save the "colours" of the welds and then clear coat that. Do you know any chemicals what can remove the edp coating ?
Most of the available automotive//aircraft paint strippers should remove EDP.
😊
How long does a finish like yours last if the vehicle is stored in a dry storage facility?
It should easily out live me. LOL .. The products we use are really good. I am thankful to have the support from our Jobber.
